Rogers will soon be offering all dream owners a free upgrade to the Magic. Due to Rogers pushing out a android 2.1 update to the magic in the comming months and the dream receiving no such update, rogers will be allowing dream users to trade in for a free magic.
http://www.teleclick.ca/2010/01/rogers-wireless-lets-htc-dream-users-upgrade-to-htc-magic/
dont know about you guys but i think im going to take advantage of this deal to get the added ram the magic has. i will miss more hard keyboard though...
That is definitely a downgrade.
No keyboard = no good.
It's a step in the right direction but don't get too excited.
The Magic and the Dream came out at the same time for Rogers and most of us knew the Magic had more ram but we still took the Dream because of the keyboard.
Also don't forget that Rogers has a policy that you can't get HUP from them in the first 2 years of your contract with a smartphone. Now obviously they are going to tweek this to allow us to "upgrade" to the Magic but it will surely come with a contract extension, which mean you'll be tied for another 2 years before you can upgrade again. Lets also not forget that the Magic has the same slow arse processor the Dream does. Do you really want to be stuck on the Qualcomm® MSM7201A 528MHz processor for another 2 years ?
I'd be much more willing to spend a few bucks and get a real phone. You know if the Rogers had the Milestone or the Nexus One.
I personally don't have any issue with the CPU on DREAM.
It *IS* a phone....
I would NEVER give up the keyboard though. Even for a GN1.
Those rumors of the "enterprise edition" of the GN1 with a keyboard sound nice....
Yeah the keyboard is a must! I have had alot of HTC devices in the past with no keys, so I finally got the dream a few months back and so far I am loving it, and the update doesnt really matter to me once my 2 year is done I will get a new device.

Well I did the free upgrade. I was 7 months into my 3 year contract so I had to renew for 3 years and my HUP credit gets reset to the full 3 years but I figured I couldn't pass it up.
Question is do I keep both phones or do I sell the Magic brand new, or do I jump ship and sell the Dream and hold onto the Magic for a little while?
dont know why you had to re-sign for 3 years... i sweet talked the rogers agent and stayed on my existing contract (2years 7months) as well as i didnt have my HUP change...
mabey its because im a stunningly good looking guy.. who knows
Well everyone I wouldn't worry too much about the 2 yrs before you get another HUP (Hardware Upgrade) there are big changes coming to the program!!
Imagine a HUP for the cost of a new activation, unheard of right? Welcome to the new Rogers, yes there will still be a 2 or 3 yr commitment required in order to get that new HUP, but instead of paying $199 for a new phone, it will be as if you walked in off the street and signed up!!
Lot's more new stuff coming out in the future, so stay tuned!!!
Forgot to mention the deal is only available till end of this month. Also you get to keep your dream. Free phone, can sell your old one if you want, its stupid to not take advantage of this deal, unless you bought the dream when it first came out.
I called in to see if I could get this upgrade, but they said that I was not eligible because I have not had the account for two years. Is this correct, do you have to have been with rogers for over two years to get this upgrade?
Call them back and tell them that the offer is new and they can ask for help if they need to. The 2yr HUP term has been waived for this offer and it is available for those that have gotten their phone either through a hardware upgrade or through a new activation between Jan 1st 2009 and Dec 31st 2009
I called them today and the customer rep explain to me that only different will be that there a keyboard (like they didn't wanted me to upgrade), I just listen to them and got the phone approved everything waived off, there some people on the internet mentioning that there a 50$ there isn't, you only get the 50$ once you renew your contract, but they made a exception for this HUP. @beav_35, if you mention hardware upgrade they wont let you do that, explain to them of the specific Dream to Magic upgrade.
Just have a HUP 30 Dec. 2009 (Dream) now upgraded again to (Magic) for $0.00 just and additional one (1) month extension to my current 3-year term. pls $50 rebate.

I said the same until I actually got the N1 and used the soft keyboard. The phone is snappy and responsive enough, and the screen is large enough that the soft keyboard is actually easier for me to type on than the physical keyboard on my now retired G1.
You really should try it out physically before you decide, but yeah the N1EE may make me eat my words (if they don't significantly increase the size of the phone to add the keyboard (but I'm guessing it will be back to roughly the same size as the G1).
On another note, I'm really wishing T-Mobile would do the same, at least a G1 to refurb MyTouch upgrade. Would make my wife worlds happier.
Isn't that complete bull****? I'm running 1.6 on my Rogers dream now from Cyanogen.
ALSO can I get this upgrade? I don't have a contract with Rogers. I bought my Rogers dream from ebay and use it on Bell?

It all depends on Verizon's Android offerings. I'm up for a new phone in October and I know my wife is ready for a new phone, as am I, so it all depends.
My hardware renewal is coming up at the end of November, and I've been informed by an inside source that Telus is getting the Hero. So I'll be getting that, unless they also get the Samsung i7500.
I was a late adopter of the Vogue. Grabbed it from Verizon as it was being discontinued in order to have a smartphone that didn't require a data plan. I have more than 1.5 years until I'm up for renewal.
I have had the Vogue for 2 years now, and my contract was up a few weeks ago... I am just waiting for either the Hero to be at Sprint or AT&T to have an Android phone...
Biding my time...

You won't have long for either if the leaks are to be believed.
I was an early adopter for the Vogue on Alltel. Bought the first one in our area. I've been up for an upgrade, but since we're a part of Verizon, I'm waiting to see what they have in Android offerings this winter. Supposedly, Motorola is releasing one on Verizon.
hero
I wanted the touch pro2.
UNTIL,
I started using the hero OS on my vogue!
OMG! HERO ALL THE WAY! Thank you sprint!

Same here, atx. Unfortunately I'm not on Sprint but hopefully with HTC pushing more and more Android phones one is bound to hit Verizon this year.
I'm getting a Sprint TP2, TD2, or TG01, which ever is best and is announced before the end of the year. Or switching to Verizon and getting the Omnia II (but their prices suck so much compared to Sprint's).
I'm getting the HTC Hero on Sprint (if it's not too slow)
Am kinda sure that the hero and the touchpro2 are coming out this year.. which is good for the people that like them :B
I want the diamond2 so bad.. but not even 1 leak picture that can give me hope
Reading some of the posts about the Hero being slow and laggy with the Touchflo interface, I'm hesitant to get one. My contract is up in December with Sprint. I'm pretty sure that any Sprint Android phone will not work with my SERO plan and don't think I want to get the everything plan. I don't come close to my 500 minutes I currently have, just lots of text and data, so I don't want to pay the $100 a month or the overpriced lesser plans.
Might just stick with my vogue running android for a while as long as it keeps getting updates.
Speaking of the Sprint hero, I may be switching from Verizon to Sprint because of the huge difference in price would allow me to have data access on my phone. Having Android on my Vogue has really made me want the Hero or another Android phone, but the Pre seems really appealing too.
I'm only a year into my contract but I'm eligible for a primary phone upgrade under my family plan. When the prices dropped on current verizon smartphones I almost pulled the trigger on a touch pro but with the Omnia II and htc touch pro 2 coming out soon I might wait. The Omnia II has the specs I'm looking for and would be a nice upgrade from my touch. I wonder how much the omnia II (or touch 2) would cost on verizon. How much did the omnia I cost when it first came out?
I love my Vogue... I'd be content on it forever most likely. But I do yearn for something fancy like Android, so I may get the Hero
As for it being laggy, I bet software tweaks will fix that. Hopefully you can disable the Touchflo interface, I never liked those showy themes anyways.
I'm hoping for the Motorola Calgary on Verizon before the end of the year, but I'm not 100% sold on it. Need more specs, info about the build. I worry about how horribly Verizon will mangle Android, but then I know someone will unlock it at some point and I'll be able to put whatever I want on there.
This thread is in hopes that everyone who signs could speak themselves to sprint. If enough signatures are put on here i will forward this thread to sprint's marketing team. The question poses out there, who would actually go to sprint and pay a figure of $349.99 with a new contract for a sprint hd2?
i'd buy for 400-450 + a 1-2yr agreement. as long as they dont cripple it or drastically change its appearance.
i want it right now, cash in the hand.
i see this phone lasting me at least 2yrs before it becomes obsolete
I would definetely buy one from Sprint!
Hell yes! My contract is up with AT&T and Im ready to change to either Sprint or Tmobile whoever gets the HD2.
Absolutely!
I would definitely enjoy it if Sprint would consider taking on the HD2 for it's gracious clients without making any crazy changes to it. I just got the TP2 and would have to get rid of it to make room for the HD2. Let's make it happen Sprint, please?!?!
Me too, I would gladly leave Verizon for Sprint if they get the HD2. Don't cripple it though!
I don't think I would leave ATT for Sprint. CDMA is just too crippled. I love switching to the newest phones all the time, and that usually entails Euro GSM phones
I woulda definitely got it, but most likely would leave to USMC by time phone is released.
I am holding off buying a TP2 til at least January at which time I hope the HD2 would be available on Sprint. If not, I would probably get a TP2 even though I would prefer the HD2. If Sprint does get the HD2 I would wait even longer but if becomes evident that Sprint will NOT offer the HD2, I'll get a TP2.
HD2
I'm definatly in i really like the size of the iphone over my Diamond but i don't want to leave Sprint/Nextel after some 15 years...
'Definitely would purchase, HOWEVER, I would really, really, REALLY appreciate it if Sprint were to continue the Worldphone functionality of the Touch Pro2, but include all 3G frequencies. A keyboard would be great, too (a la Touch Pro2), as well as a trackball (a la Hero). 'Just my two cents, but Sprint and HTC would have some VERY F*&%IN' happy customers. Then, maybe I'd consider makin' the switch.
Immediately
i would immediately purchase this phone if it came to sprint in fact ive been waiting for a very very long time and now when it came down to the final stretch i was very disappointed to see t-mobile take the cake ..... BRING THIS PHONE TO SPRINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess no chance of sprint releasing an HD2 ehh? Love that giant screen and being wm6.5 hopefully no "iconic phone" restrictions.
really funny 2 years later I just retired my HD2! It was modded with CM7 but it still worked like a charm!

'Retired', as in? Do you mean you sold it, or do you want to sell it?
Send me a PM.
If so, which phone do you want?
I have had many PDA phones from HTC. I've probably had the Touch the longest out of all of them. I had the Diamond for a couple of months but returned it as the battery lasted only a fraction of the time that my touch did with the same settings. I hear the GSM version didn't have as much of a battery issue as the CDMA version. I currently am running build 6.5 23081 on my Touch and it is the best OS and build so far I've had on it but the phone is missing so many features I would like. While the Touch has served me very well, I'm looking forward to my next model.
I'm on Sprint so my choices are limited but I'm hoping they are considering the HD2 as they have a poll on their web site to find out if people would like it - http://community.sprint.com/baw/poll.jspa?poll=1040
I want the faster processor
I want the bigger screen
I want the flash (as I use vjcandela and other programs to use the phone as a flashlight)
I want the higher resolution
I want the new touch screen
I want the HD2
im buying a blackberry or htc hero this week. im done with winmo.
Well it's rumored that the HTC Dragon is coming to Verizon. I'm going to hold out on getting anything else. The dragon is the android version of the hd2. So i'll be looking at a 1GZ Snapdragon powered Android 2.0 phone with sense ui. I hope it doesn't melt my hands.

yeah but i wonder what the price tag will be? better start saving now zen.
I can't imagine the phone NOT being subsidized in part by the carrier, you know... like everything else they've ever put out - it'll just be close to half a million when it first comes out like it always is.
But yes, I like the touch a lot but I really miss the hardware keyboard on my MotoQ, I am now not only against all screen keyboards, but will never buy another phone that doesn't have a hardware keyboard now.

HA did you say YOUR choices are limited? I'm with Bell Mobility. MY CHOICES ARE MUCH MORE LIMITED
well i can say goodbye to winmo in a few days. i just got a great deal on 2 new blackberry curves from sprint for only $50, so i got one phone for free!
come on windows mobile is great. i only have to hard reset every week or so.
I've had my WinMo HTC Touch with Sprint for over two years and I had to hard reset all of like twice....and one of those times was just to install WinMo 6.1. So yeah, maybe you guys are just doing something wrong, lol.
As far as my next phone, I am getting that HTC Touch Pro 2!! It look so amazing and I am dying to get my hands on it. HOWEVER, I just might change my mind because these new 1GHz phones seem so freakin' beastly. I gotta see when they'll be out and if it'll be worth the wait. Also I gotta see if they have all the features I want.
The Verizon Eris or Droid doesnt look so bad......
Canada wont get the Motorola droid for months and when we do it will be a 3 year contract with a $500 activation fee and a minimum $60 monthly plan with 500mb transfer and NOT unlimited texting just like the Palm Pre. Epic failure.

I went into the local Bell retail store, looking at phones. Talked to the guy about the HTC Touch Diamond. He looks at me weird, asks "You like Windows Mobile??". I grin back, and say, "No, I like Android, but that's the closest I can get with you guys." I pull out my vogue and show him plemen's themed Donut build. At this point he tells me to hold on to my $200 upgrade credit a bit longer... as they will have the Samsung Galaxy within a month! Apparently the Samsung rep had been in the day before to talk 'em up about the Galaxy and Android, how awesome it's gonna be... yadda yadda. Needless to say, I'm holding onto that upgrade credit of mine for a *bit* longer
The galaxy is very un-exciting.
Better to get an unlocked Hero from Telus and put it on Bell.
I'm considering jumping to T-Mobile here in a few days, as my Sprint contract is ending. A friend of mine is selling his G1 for pretty cheap in good condition. That combined with the Even More Plus plans sounds like a better deal than being stuck in a contract again for 2 years.
I know the phone is crazy old, but it still seems to have great support for roms and such. I have no problems with rooting and flashing at all.
Also, for the people who are with T-Mobile right now, if I start a Even More Plus plan right now, would I be able to "upgrade" to contracted phone down the road, which would prompt me to the more expensive plan, should I ever get a real itch for a Vibrant or things coming out later this year.
I just got mine today lol i love it
My other phone is a tilt 2 tho
Really no point. On CL in my city g1s are 60 used 120ish new. It still has awsome support but remember, its close to 2 years old.... With technology going at the pace its at, think of it like comparing a 2010 mustang against a very well maintained 1985 mustang. Its definately a usable phone and will make you pleased, but won't compare with the advancements in speed, fuel economy, safety, etc...
If you asked this question 7-8 months ago, I would have totally recomended it. Now, not so much.
P.S. download the APN on/off widget or APNdroid to turn off data, so you can qualify for cheaper talk/text only plans. Data is roughly $20-30 more expensive, plus your phone will be functional under wifi. Plus battery lasts longer
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using XDA App
i would say the same as mej,
but totally.. now.. its not much worth. I would totally go for a nexus one if i had to buy a new phone
T-Mobile don't even sell G1s anymore, do they?
Anyways, if you're getting a contract, don't buy an old phone! Get a myTouch slide or wait for the Sidekick Twist.
I would just get the Vibrant right now, because I think if you come into your contract with a used G1 you can't get a new phone till you're up for an upgrade. Besides, the Vibrant(along with most of the other Galaxy S lineup) is top of the line right now. They are benchmarking higher video framerates than a EVO 4G. Plus it has 720p HD video recording, and HD video out so you can play back what you recorded on a hdtv. Also has a accelerometer and gyroscope, giving it a 6-axis g-sensor for epic gaming. Oh yeah, and it's the baddest phone T-Mo has right now, period.
I purchases my G1 2 months ago, best buy ever (paid 100 uk pound, around 130euro then, with 8GB microsd, ...).
Still no phone with a tilt keyboard yet (had a tilt, htc kaiser, much better then htc pro, but the G1 has a nicer touch screen (the tilt was also running android 2.1).
If your stuck on Tmobile, don't want to spend too much, and want a new phone before your contract ends, then go for it
Nowadays with a new contract you can get some pretty good phones for really cheap prices
I've had my G1 since I received it after preordering it. It's an EXCELLENT phone. However, it's age is showing. There are some things it simply cannot do and many things it cannot do well.
If you're going the as-cheap-as-I-can route in the short-term, a G1 may do the trick (And, if it were January of 2009, I'd say get the G1.). But, as it's been said before, if you're going to be locked into a 2 year contract, you'll really want to get hardware with enough power to last you those two years and not leave you wanting more.
Personally, if I were buying right now, it would either be a NexusOne or a Vibrant. Something with enough processing power and RAM for Android 2.2+
Good luck!
I got my G1 this past January... and while I don't regret it, there's no chance I'd buy this phone now. Every day I wish this thing had a Snapdragon in it. If you're really worried about contracts go with an unlocked phone for more money upfront - at least with T-Mobile, the plan will be cheaper, so it'll even out.
Again, the G1 is a great phone and I love the design/form factor, but for this day and age it's just not fast enough.
I don't believe you'll be able to take an Even More Plus plan and then go to an Even More plan right off the back, at least not with your same number...but, If you sign up for google Voice at the same time as getting the g1, give out that number to everyone as your new number, when you upgrade your to a contract(if you do), that GV number will still be the same and you'll just have to change the number under your GV settings.
Would I buy a G1 right now? If it was 0-50, maybe 75 with an 8 gig sd card. We've got 2.2 running on our phones now as a daily driver. it makes/receives calls, what more you need from a phone?

I do have one question... why not stay with Sprint? Their plans are competitively priced with T-Mobile, and they have excellent Android devices. The Epic 4G is due out soon, which should be an amazing phone by anyone's standards. And it will have a hardware keyboard, like the G1...
If price is the most important, don't go with T-Mobile. Get an unlocked T-Mobile phone and take it over to Simple Mobile at mysimplemobile.com. They use the same 3G bands as T-Mobile but you get unlimited talk, text, and internet for a flat $60/month.

Well I Just bought one to hold me off until the "Project Emerald" phone comes out. It's better than using a non android phone. I think that using it as a temporary phone it will do the job.
Still an awsome phone but :] mTS 2 for 1 lol
If you don't care about having a fast phone, go for it. I just went from g1 to vibrant, and the vibrant is everything I wanted the g1 to be. The g1 is gonna give you a taste of what android can do, so you may end up wanting something better.

Hi, i'm looking at getting a new phone for my wife and been looking at the fascinate from telus as it's on sale for $99 with 3 yr contract.
I heard that telus in the coming weeks will be launching a few new phones though i have no idea what they are or if they'll be any smart phones.
so with that said, if you were to get a phone today, would you still get the fascinate or would you hold off for a couple of weeks?
btw, apparently it comes with froyo so i'm thinking that update fixed some of the issues with gps and such... least i think it would
thanks
No. But, I am on Verizon.
Telus may be a different story.
Nope. I'd choose an HTC or a Motorola over the sammy if I had to do it all over again.
Yes ... but only because of the price I paid. ($50 / no activation)

If I could, I'd wait for the dual core phones to come out. If I had to buy now, I'd still get the fascinate. My son has the Incredible, my father-in-law has the X, overall I like the fascinate better than either of those.
Absolutely. I still think it's best in class.
But i agree that if you could wait, wait for a dual core. But for now, there isn't anything the fascinate can't do.
If I had to do it over again, or if I needed a phone right now, yes, I would choose the Fascinate, no doubt about it. It really is a great phone. Not without its quirks and annoyances, but what phone is? If I didn't need a new phone really bad, then given the new powerhouses coming out within the next couple months, I would probably take some time to consider the options. I've never liked Motorola's designs until now, but I must admit that the Bionic looks very tempting. Of course, the locked bootloader crap might give me pause (let's hope they fix that like they claimed they will).
Once rooted and de-bloated, it's still the leader ATM. This will change in a couple of months though.

I got 2 for free and I still don't want them. No one on Craigslist wants them either because I've been trying to trade them for the past month.
thanks for all the responses. my wife doesn't really need a power house of a phone. she would just like to get a GPS app and a web browser with text abilities. it was this or an iphone so i think i might go grab it for her as i'm so against iphone .
though... scriz, i'm curious why you seem to hate the phone so much, least that's my impression
take care
If you're on the telus. That's different. So that's up to you.
3 year contract? F that. I like the phone, but I'm still counting down til my upgrade. (April 14th, fwiw) I'm on VZW, so grain of salt and all that, but there is ALWAYS a better phone coming out soon and 3 years seems crazy long to me.
But, right now there isn't a better phone on VZW.
Phone yes, three year contract No! I paid $0 @ Amazon with two years on Verizon.

What he said. No way would I lock into it for 3 years. It is a good phone and all, in fact, I would do the same thing again because the others in this class have problems too. But I bought mine used off of fleabay so I am not locked in. This is a tool for me to learn Android on. I have a very strong feeling that I will be wanting something new in about a year.
I bought this device planning on selling it and upgrading after about six months. Now I plan OJ keeping it for a while. Great even right out. Of the box. If this was for my wife I wouldn't rootbor anything - just stock update to dl09 and let it roll. If I were buying today I would absolutely buy this device. All phones have issues - this one is no different. Bur overall a fantatstic device. I am guessing your wife does not need duel core or it would be her on the nerd forum with us and not you. If you can get a good deal then go for it.

Hi, i'm looking at getting a new phone for my wife and been looking at the fascinate from telus as it's on sale for $99 with 3 yr contract.

I've got the Vibrant from Bell (the sister phone) and I love it, great bang for the buck. Sure having a dual core phone would be cool but at what price and unless she is a complete power user what would she need the dual core for?
What sucks for us in Canada is the high cost of our monthly plans and the fact that we have to lock into the plans for 3 years.
the 3yr contract is pretty terrible, but the fascinate's an awesome phone, easily the best android out there. especially since telus has froyo

Wow, you Canada guys don't get any option other than 3-year contract? As in, you can't pay more for the phone and get a shorter term, or even pay full price for month to month? I've been doing 1-year contracts with Verizon, not because I plan on leaving, but because I don't want to be locked into the same phone for so long without any upgrade discounts. That allowed me to upgrade off the Eris to the Fascinate after 10 months. The Fascinate was made available for sale conveniently a day before I was eligible for upgrade with discount. That day of waiting was torture.
I'm on Verizon and I'd still buy it again even without the Froyo update. Most of the bad press on this phone has been because of the lack of Froyo. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have it, but I had it on my old phone and it's not that big of a deal. The responsiveness of the phone and the beautiful samoled screen win out in the end. Besides, if you're on Telus, you'll have Froyo anyway.
