Sloooow performance - any tips? - Touch2 General

Hey guys,
I bought the Mega over the Tattoo because I like how Microsoft products are highly customisable, and after fiddling around with Windows OSes for years I known there's always a way to make them run better.
My Mega's performance in day to day tasks is not good, in my opinion. It lags when I try to swipe from one side to the other in TouchFlo, it takes up to ten seconds to give me a missed call notification, the Answer Call slider ALWAYS lags, there's a delay in deploying the on screen keyboard when it is selected and numerous other annoying speed problems.
Has anybody else encountered these kinds of issues? Has anybody found a way to make the phone operate at a reasonable pace in day to day tasks?
Just so you know, I'm using a stock ROM but would consider flashing to a new one if that improved speed. I've hardly installed anything on the phone either so its basically running as-is from out of the box
Thanks,
Jennan

Hello, there are a few things you can do:
1 Soft reset (for sure done)
2 Install tweak programs like advanced configuration tools, Diamond tweak to improve performance and adapt settings
3 Do hard reset (make back-up first)
Succes

So nobody else encounters performance problems with the Touch2?

Yes. lagy bit*h this is. but have to live with it.

Try this tweak
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\ResProxy\ShareMemSize=0 (Increase free memory)

Try SK Tools (or may be there is some free software I am unaware of ), and go to notification queues select mark duplicates and then delete everything that was marked. This drastically improves the performance (atleast in my case it does ).
Another thing you can try is in Advanced config tool, set the file system filter cache to 8 MB and Glyph cache to 64 KB. See if that helps.
Best of luck

You can try the clearTemp application to remove any temp data which is also responsible for making the device slow.

Re:Best software for WM5.0 to date...by far!!
Hi all. I cannot take credit for the best bit of software I have come across since purchasing my Jasjar. All credit most deservedly goes to sub69 for pointing me in the right direction. 8)
Read this thread to understand why:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30412
Like most people on this forum, I joined xda-developers to solve my own problems whilst trying to help others solve theirs if I am able. I've been cursing left right and center for 3 weeks now about the performance of the Jasjar even though i still love the device. However one of my big complaints related to memory usage/leakage as I believed it affected the jasjars performance and through many trials and errors and lows, I almost sold it due to feeling I was not getting what I paid for. I felt that the jasjar was slow and underperformed.
I retract all former negative comments I made in relation to it being slow. Whilst looking for a simple application (with a small memory footprint) that would close all running apps without the rigmaroll of hunting down the 'settings' tab .I tried several different programs and all fell short in one way or another...till now (including Wisbar Advance 2.4.1..., Spb 3.0.1 and MagicButton (small footprint))!
Sub69 pointed me in the direction of GSPocketMagic and claimed it was the most stable program he had tried. Thought I'd give it a go too. Am I over the moon that I did.
This software does EXACTLY what it says it does.....well for me anyhow. Even better, it very much appears to have ironed out alot of my performance/speed issues with the jasjar! It has sped up browsing of the O/S and access to applications and gives me greater control of navigation in a simple manner. For me it has been Rock solid. I've only been testing it for about 5 hours+, but it hasn't slowed down once and has not dropped below 12MB of Program memory (I started with 27MB) & it maintains its speed whilst I upurposely ran 12 programs simulatneously (including video, music, photo slide show, word mobile, powerpoint, resco radio etc..)and then connected to wi-fi, surfed the net (faster I might add -not the loading of new web pages, but of cached ones) and posted on this forum. Almost Everything has improved by at least 30% or more (speed gain) and whilst I still get some jerking in high res 640x480 vid playback, it too seems more stable.
I don't understand how this has happened. All I had previously installed was TCPMP and Resco radio ! :?
Bearing in mind I had even overclocked my jasjar (no longer needed) with PocketHackMaster 2005, which, for me, did not yield results as favourable as this has.
The only logical conclusion I have been able to come up with is that GSPocketMagic has overridden some default settings/application that was somehow holding my Jasjar back! Overridden a bug in other words & this seems possible as it loads first after a soft reset, therefore taking precedence over anything else that may have usually performed some of its functions. Anyway that's just a theory.
For anyone like sub69 who have experienced relatively few problems with their universal, you might not notice any difference, but for anyone who is still suffering performance issues, I urge you to try this. You have nothing to loose & no of course I don't work for the company. I've just had to wait 3 weeks to start seeing the manifestation of the beast I believed the Jasjar was supposed to be.
Sorry about the long post people, but I've shared in alot of the misery many of you have been complaining about & at £700 it's about time we got some positive results.
thanks again to sub69. 8)
I can confirm that this programme is small and perfectly funcitonal for closing apps. If you're battling with PocketPlus for some reason, then this is definitely the way to go.
So do you have a URL where I can download it from?
Just have a look in the original thread he mentioned ;-) it´s

Hi, is it possible to use it without replacing the current Today page and Start Menu?
Which CAB file do I install?
Yes, there's an option to set the 'click' to open the "Start Menu" (the default is "Menu") You could then set "Tap & Hold" to close all tasks or maybe to open the GSPM++ Menu.
I use "GSPMagic.xscaleE.cab" for the english version.
Here you go. A bitmap to use instead of he built in WM2002 windows flag.

Where do I put this? The current program's bitmaps are all together in one file.
Are other people finding this program somehow magically overrides some settings or bugs?
Do I have to keep closing tasks to keep up good performance?
This is the only button you can change as far as I know. Put it anywhere, and on the Basic tab of the GSPM++ settings screem, choose Bitmap as the Image, and browse to the saved .bmp
I don't have to keep closing tasks, but mackaby may have a different opinion on this, as he was having more problems with the JasJar's performance in the first place?

Put in anywhere you like, then go to the menu: start-option-setting. Change to Bitmap and point to your new start menu bitmap.
The less programs you keep in memory, the better the performance, so close your apps instead of building up in mem.
Ok Sub69, you where there just before me.......tnx for the nice bitmap!
WM 2005 was supposed to deal with this issue. But I find that the build in close button of WM 2005 does not close at all. Amazing MS didn't find a solution for this problem yet.
The great thing about GSPM is that it also closes the phone application, where Magic button cannot deal with this properly.

Quite true, that was the case for me, but no more. It doesn't really matter wether I close down applications or not, my speed is always up, unless I run videos at the same time in windows media player and TCPMC (that was accidental by the way).
Like I said, it's worked for me, and I had performance issues. If you don't have any, maybe you you won't see any improvement in performance, but it is still a very useful and stable application.
Oh, don't get me wrong it definitely speeds things up a bit for me too. It's only when you mentioned it that I really noticed though. I've been installing and uninstalling so many different things it's hard to keep track of what might be making a difference!!
Anyway, it's the best task manager I've used on my JasJar, and the performance boost is a welcome bonus!
Two Soft keys issue is back!
Small problem, some of us have noticed that the 2 soft keys keep dissapearing and reappearing after soft-resets. I thought I had this sussed last night, but I was wrong. It's my only issue with this software but not enough to put me off it.
mig31 suggested we might contact the developers of the software, as they would more than likely be able to fix this quicker than we could. I second that.
Gotta work at the mo, but unless someone else is willing to get in touch with the developers of GSPocketMagic, I'll get around to it in the week and post the outcome of our communications. Otherwise, all's well with this app.
I just wish I cud understand why (and if) it speeds up the device, even if u dont close apps. I'm a bit dubious if it's actually doing anything otherwise, without some benchmarks :S
if anyone finds gs++'s source code, please pm me.
V
I noticed that the 2 bottom soft keys disappear when you click "Close all". May be there is a way to add this in the "Exlude task Close" somehow

SPV M5000, (imateJAsJAR) problems...anyone help ?

hi guys,
just got my M5000, however i got 2 questions, its driving me mad and losing faith with my new purchase fast
I am a new owner so be gentle
1. Programs are still running, when i close them if i look in settings-->system--->memory, running programs still has programs running! do these stay forever? and i have to close them in here EVERYTIME?
2. do you guys have to reset the machine every so often? seems bizarre coming from a nokia phone. Is it normal to reset the phone?
1. The programs will stay running, they are designed to. Windows Mobile (5 in this case) will manage the memory, and when more is required, it will close down programs automatically.
There really is no need to keep closing them usually, unless you are about to do something where you specifically need a large amount of memory, and want to be sure...
2. What particular problems are you having that are requiring you to reset the device? I havent reset mine in weeks, maybe we can help? Define 'every so often'. Remeber, this is basically a mini PC running windows you have here, and as such will need to be restarted at times, just like your home pc.
thanks for the reply

Spb Pocket Plus is my favourite for this kind of stuff. It gives you shortcut buttons on the Today screen, as well as a Close button that really closes the programs, Safe Mode booting, etc.
They charge USD 24.95. Check it out here: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/?en

Hi,
Only had mine about 4 weeks - however have been using PPCs for about 8 years.
I have always been a loyal fan of pocket plus - but find it just too slow on the M5000. I have replaced all of that functionality with magic button(free), small menu(free-there is a plus version for a fee) and apreminder+(free)-all take much less space than ppc+!
Magic button allows you either close the app or minimise and even if you choose to close apps you can build an exception list just in case you want to leave any open!
At first I had to soft reset my device at least six times a day when i was messing around installing apps etc - now i would say its about 1 a day maybe every other day - it is quite stable, and with wm5 you never have to worry about loosing data if the battery gets disconnected or run down.
When I switched from Nokia - 2 things hit me battery life and soft reseting.
Matt
yer matt you notice these things when u move from a establised phone maker like Nokia.
However what is magic button? sorry me a newbie M500 owner

There you go - also has an option to soft reset your device so you dont have to keep prodding that hole - mind looks damaged already!
BTW :
apreminder+ is a repeating alarms utility (You'll notice that clock alarms repeat ok, but alarms for tasks or calender appts - do not repeat even if the option is checked!! - Its a long standing fault of wm2003SE and has reoccured in wm5) The only problems (but its free) with apreminder+ is dont change options whilst in landscape view - (switch first) and for some reason it repeats the reminder sound during the clock alarm.
small menu - this basically replaces the start menu and with alot of playing around you can basically customise it so all favourite apps are a click away!
others might have different views on better apps but these suit my needs.
Matt
You might want to check out Wisbar Lite (really cheap if not free ... cant remember) here... its a great application manager (so you can close apps if you want to) and it features a really cool battery manager (just uses the top 2 rows of pixels at the top of the screen).
They do a Wisbar Pro (or something like that) that is said to provide really nice skins for the device.... never tried it though.

Now that you've mentioned it, I do agree with you about Pocket Plus' performance on the Universal, especially the close button - if I have 2 or 3 programs running in the background, the close button menu can take up to 5 seconds to open up!
But I do like its Safe Mode feature... Any recommendations for this one?
Thanks for the list of freebies too.

Good point....The safe mode saved me from hard resets at least twice on my M2000. My device had locked up due to messed up today plugins - which I think is the main reason for a safe mode!!
Catch22 really:
Keep PPC+ but suffer performance (that 5 secs nonsense to open running programs really got to me) but be safe in the knowledge that if your today plugins screw up you have a way out.
OR
Dont bother about the safe mode and always remember to backup before installing today apps.
Personally, I have sprite backup, takes about 5mins to backup and restores prefectly when needed and dont forget M5000 has persistant storage so not likely to lose data if you have a device lockup.

I have always been a fan of spb, in fact have installed PP, diary, backup, gprs, weather.
howwever in the end, I have decommissioned all of them as the total drain on performance was frustrating.
I turn them on again when iget bored and want a change.
SPB PP runs much faster as a today plugin without the extras enabled.
the reason I mention it now is that without all the extra features, plug ins etc, I can just leave all the running programs as it will only zap my memory from 30mb to 20mb, thus leaving plenty of breathing space. however with all the plugins loaded I would start at 20 dropping to below 10 thus taking quite a memory hit.
my resets are also reduced using the basic device to once per week compared to once per day.
but as I said, I am a sucker for plugins and new stuff so I use them, then get frustrated and go back to the basic device.
my 2 bobs worth...

First steps with a Touch Diamond 2

Hi people,
I have just got my new Touch Diamond 2 and it's beautiful. I have spent several days googling looking for the best place of expertese for tweaking and customising, and it seems this is the place. I have never owned a Windows Mobile device or a HTC before, but I'm PC savvy and I want to tweak my new phone.
Among other things, I want to:
Be sure my phone uses Wifi when available instead of contract internet
Tweak the TouchFLO home screen (including analogue clock and RSS)
Find a list of the best and/or most popular mods/software
Where do I start and what do I need!
Congratz
As I've heard and noticed from my own TD2 is that it always uses wifi over data. But if you really want to be sure you can disable Data Connection in the Communication tab whenever you want to surf.
You can also in All Settings => Personal => Buttons configure that long hold button disables Data Connection.
As for tweaking I would download Diamond Tweak and Advanced Config
http://www.touchxperience.com/en/advanced-configuration-tool/downloads.html
http://montecristoff.webs.com/diamondtweak.htm
First law of windows mobile: keep the internal disk clean!
Install every new piece of software on the memory card.
For my TD2 I got a 16Gb microSD card and started with Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3 to tweak all storage-related paths to folders I created on the memory card.
A good place to start looking for tools is freewarepocketpc.net. A lot of more than decent free applications. The ones you don't like can always be removed in settings/system/remove programs, and replaced by commercial tools.
I disagree.. I used to install everything on the external card; and found two major disadvantages:
- some app will run a lot slower!
- if you use your sd card to store music video and other stuff
you better not have to change it...
I m more inclined to install less apps that filling the memory card with it.
The main use I have for the memory card is to store backups, documents, music, and install cab files.

Yeah I saw those button settings but couldn't work out what they meant. What is this long hold button? Is it the dial button that if you hold puts it on speaker phone? And how would you configure it for disabling a data connection, I don't see and option that would allow this?
I have seen that freewarepocketpc website, and had a snoop around. I have an 8Gb card coming today (hopefully!) and I was waiting to get that to install software on it. I read that might slow down some apps, now I'm not so sure what to do. However I want to avoid installing a load of software to try it out, then uninstalling it. It is windows after all. That's why I wanted some recommended software from people on here.
Question: Will that configuration tool allow tweaking of the TouchFLO stuff? Has anyone changed the clock on the TouchFLO Home page thingy?
Thanks all for your help
You have to chose the tab "End Key" under the Button setting menu and then chose the "terminate data connection" option
Ahh I get it now, had a look at those keys thanks. Going to use Advanced Configuration Tool when I get my memory card (still not here yet!)
The best single piece of advice I can give any TD2 owner is to ditch TF3D and at least try living without it. Your rewards will be more available memory, faster operation, increased functionality, full use of applications' today screen plugins, less (or no) bugs, and the cost is it doesn't look as nice.
In a couple of months' time, WM6.5 will be out and then even the looks will be there.
After much research I have ditched TouchFLO and got SPB Mobile Shell 3. I keep hearing about bugs but I am yet to encounter one. I have to say that SPB Mobile Shell 3 is what I would have expected to have on a phone like this. TouchFLO looks good, and I have a friend that loves it, but you can't customise it very easily. Simply having the widgets in SPB Mobile SHell 3 makes it a better, mnore customisable and quicker interface.
I currently have Total Commander as an explorer replacement. I'm not sure if this is the best, but I have yet had time to do proper research. It's supposed to have a registry editor in there, but for the life of me I can't find it :/
Had some serious fun with video playback. I wanted to play full quality (not HD) dix files, DVD rips and the like. After much fun with different software I found that Coreplayer blows everything out of the water. My expectations had dropped about what I might be able to watch on my phone after having problems with other media players, but Coreplayer can play full movie DVD rips with no stuttering and it looks awesome.
Still some fun to be had tweaking, for example finding out if/how java stuff will work, trying to find something for email/sms, and some "cool" apps to impress my gran.
I'm no expert but purely from personal experience the first steps are:
1) Install Resco Explorer
http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/default.asp
2) Install HTC hotfix for Diamond 2
(http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=249&cat=0&dl_id=563)
3) Install .NET Framework 3.5 (requirement for a bunch of 3rd party software)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en
4) Install SKTools (needed for many things but especially for next step)
http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?m_products.html#tools
5) Use SKTools to disable ActiveSync (results in huge improvement of battery duration)
5a) Disable the repllog.exe (which is the application behind ActiveSync) associated with ""AppRunAfterTimeChange"" in Notifications Queue
Alternative way is to install Dotfred's Task manager and kill repllog.exe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3175757&postcount=50
5b) Follow the steps 1-7 in the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=288352
5c) Install eLiAs_ASyncKiller.cab
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3048077&postcount=40
6) Install HDTweak for various tweaks (eg for improvement of TouchFlo response)
7) Install sdkcerts (needed for "cosmetic" interventions eg Hall Feica fonts in TouchFlo, slpashscreens, topbar etc)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=471604
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3661976&postcount=80
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3861405&postcount=2
8) Install Diamond D3D Video drivers using the first attachment from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475493&highlight=ATI+3d+driver
Before installation download and run the fourth attachment (Lights.exe)
Install the drivers and then run Lights.exe again to see the huge improvement
9) Install G-Config (for forcing applications to go into landscape mode)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3848546&postcount=3
10) Enjoy your Topaz
P.S.: Backup your Contacts, Calendar etc frequently

I have the Diamond2 as well... wouldn't I want to install 'Diamond Tweak' instead of 'HD Tweak'? Are they essentially the same thing, or does HD Tweak offer more functionality for the Diamond2?

A way to cure 'Memory Leak'

I'd been experiencing memory leak problem for months. Atleast 1-3 soft-resets were a must within each day. I'd tried out many way to resolve and now I think I've found a way to get over it.
But first, the memory leak in my sense is the decreasing of program's free RAM after each soft reset. Even you are not touching your ppc, your free RAM still going down and hang up at the end.
In my case I primaryly noticed the service.exe size was becoming bigger and bigger from 200KB to 16+MB within few hours (possibly). The problem caused by windows live service. I still do not know any technical reasons behind but after I deleted some Windows Live registry keys, the problem has gone. Now is after my 2 days test, the services.exe has never gone beyond 1.6 MB. System is now very stable no reset required for days.
This might help some system having same problem, so I come here and share this. BUT USE IT AS YOUR OWN RISK.

nice I will test!

I don't think many other people are experiencing memory leaks like you, perhaps you should look at your ROM version and what software you have on your device.

A way to completely restore the Windows Live registry tree is uninstall and then re-install WLM cab file.
I used WLM versions Windows Live 10.6.0034.0800 (Fixed).cab and WindowsLive_0409.PPC2005_arm.cab. Both versions generated memory leak on my Mitac mio A-702.
There's no new ROM available from the manufacturer nor any cooked ROM available so far.
And most important is I'm just a cute end-user lol.
Anyway hope this post might help somebody.
bump.........
I wish I could find a way to get Pocket CM Contacts v.29 to run without memory leak. It's unusable for me. My Kaiser will be running at 55%, I get a few text messages with PCM running, and suddenly it climbs up to 80% till I close it out completely.
Damn shame.

Diamond 2 Performance: why so slow ?

Hello all TD2 users. After trying countless roms, cabs, settings, tweaks and all, reading information about the hardware in the phone i really don't understand:
Why is the phone so slow?
What i mean:
1. The stock rom is a nightmare to use, it lags, all the fancy animations are actualy made for the HD2: 2x faster phone than our. Custom roms are better optimised but even than it's a choppy feeling.
2. The qualcomm 528mhz processor is not the slowest one, BUT, it cannot keep up with the software. Even overclocked to 710mhz, stable, the phone is not fluent by a long run.
3. The Adreno 130 GPU ? What actually does it do ? Is the Sence UI using the GPU, only the GPU or it's mixed ? Overclocking the Processor don't speed up the animations and the transition between tabs. So i guess the GPU is the only power you need to run the UI ?
4. If the GPU is slow, why actualy do HTC put a 800x480 screen. The WildFire has a resolution 3x smaller and a 2x faster GPU (adreno 200) and a better CPU too.
I really don't get it. Is it all software related, or the Diamond 2 is a total hardware and software mess, just put what we have to date (year 2009) and go for it.
Can someone inform me about some of the points. I have real interest in knowing the phone.
Thanks.
I never had issues on this device.
I agree the stock ROM is disastrous, but I have ran some cooked ROMs that performed quite well and never over clocked.
Also over clocking beyond a certain point will cause lags, as I'm sure you are aware. I thought it was around 648 where it starts.
A task killer is essential so you do not have too many apps running simultaneously.
Too many apps installed can degrade the speed as well.
I do not think it is necessarily hardware limitations.
A couple of pointers would be to either flash back to stock or perform a MTTY Task 29 in between flashing ROMs, soft reset occasionally to keep cache clear and do not install crucial apps to the SD card.
I completely agree with Bruce.
I never seen any performance issue with the device even when I was using the Stock ROM or my OWN Cooked Rom, which I feel much more better for my device.
- You will need to make sure you are not overloading apps that are keep running in background.
- Do use any good task manager. I USE and suggest ArkSwitch.
- Avoid Manila Mods that kill performance. Alway try to stick to simple Manila (like the default that comes with device/rom) .
- Avoid big wallpapers.
etc are some of the basic tips that I can suggest .
Thanks.
Actually the latest Rom from Prabhat, Photon 1.4 is showing me that the device can actually be faster than i thought. I just have one concern. I have enabled location settings in the manila panel, so i received the Weather forecast with animation and icon on the Clock.
Now the animation kills the home screen, it's choppy and with it the whole home tab. Even after setting up a wallpaper with no animation / weather or any other, only the fact that i have the weather icon on my Clock slows down the Home Tab.
I don't think that it's only me, seeing bad performance with the weather thing.
I actually needed to hard reset the phone, to have that animation and weather icon off. It's good that this isn't working directly with first boot up and you need to set it up (at least with me) so i can enjoy a seamless Home Tab navigation. Where is the point of having something designed for other, faster platform, working rather bad on our older Diamond 2 ?
some tips to make your device faster:
disable that crapy htc sence. it will save more than 50MB or ram. use instead that titanium, iphonetoday or simple plain today screen.
use mmAppLauncher, it will save you ~20MB of ram.
In total, at cold start you will have ~120MB free, after one day usage - about 110.
ofcourse, battery last longer.
stock 2.53.479.3 wwe rom
I have the same problem with the phone and have downloaded no apps or anything in the 12 months I've had it. Goes really slow, freezes frequently. Working my way through all these threads to try and figure out how to make the thing just work. Will be trying some of the suggestions above.
One thing that I have seen slow these phones down is excessive amounts of saved texts. You may want to clear as many as you can out and see if that helps.
I have the same problem .I've try all ROM's ,official and cooked, but nothing. After 2-3 days ,topaz need to be hard reseted.I try to do not install any apps and nothing maybe i increase the days to a week.I try also android but it's slow too.The only ROM that i like how it's working it's from O2 XDA,but it's with the old one htc sence and it's German.actually the only problem is the sence.
I've try all king of setting, regs and everything else.PLS help need-fast,stable and clean rom-only with sence
Hi , i am using topaz and it works pretty good , reinstall windows after 1moth use, but if you compare it with android its very slow , so try android if you want more speed
The only time when i Hard-reset is when i flash the new Energy Rom's.
They are not sluggish en work very well.
As NRGZ28 says:
I build my ROMs with four main goals.
Eye candy ( I want my ROM to look great and for it to all flow together nicely)
Speed !!!
Smoothness, consistency and good aesthetics
Stability through private beta testing before public release

I have a new Diamond 2 and all good and fast response for me
Also I have also installed ArkSwitch as suggested above and this is a good task manager I think.
Using WM6.1 with a tweaked rom and no Manila its running fast enough for me.
I also installed Stop PushInternet for real to save another 9.5 MB of memory
Nice post. Thanks for the pointer.
I will check the registry of my ROM to see if I need that cab
