I just bought a HTC HD2 from tmobile. I don't have data plan, and would like to prevent my phone from accessing data plan. Is there any thing I can do to prevent phone from accessing the data, just don't want to pay for data plan fee.

Try NoData. Also, how much did you pay for the phone if you don't mind me asking?
Cheers.

Do you have the link for NoData? I traded in my nokia nuron, which was free when sign up with tmobile, for the HD2. I end up paying extra $100 for the HD2. So out of pocket, I paid $100 for the phone.......Hope that was a good deal

Very interesting. I've been tmobile customer since last 2009. I had European Touch Pro 2 and i went with even more plus plan which means you are buying no contract devices, i don't pay data plan. and i never paid single penny for not having data plan. I know when i accidently pressed internet, and my phone was connected to 3g, but i never paid it. I was assuming that tmobile didn't charged me for not having data plan. Weird.

Hey Phunkee,
Was the NoData app updated for Windows Mobile 6.5? I didn't really follow it too closely. I'm also not certain if there were major internal registry restructuring for Windows Mobile 6.5.
P.S. I caved.

I'm using pay per use.
I don't use HTC Sense so I don't have to worry about this. I have not tried the cab file, but there are manual options to turn off automatic data download. If HTC Sense is on, select Weather => Menu => Settings and unselect Download Data Automatically. The options are the same for the Stock ticker.
What I have done in the past when I have given my brother my old smart phones is I call up and tell them to block data on the phone. This last time however, I gave him my myTouch 3G and all I did was make sure that his line didn't have data. Even though his phone says 3G on it, when you try to connect to the internet, it doesn't load.
You can also use BsB tweaks to disable the data connection - I do this when my 200MB monthly allowance runs out.
BSB tweaks
BSB tweaks> menu> data connections> disable
I also like to press the phone button,> menu options> change baseband> Network type: GSM. this turns off 3g.

If you got a discount on the phone you will have to pay the data plan.
I just got the $20 unlimited plan from T-mo. I have been with them for 5 years and read somewhere on XDA that T-mo was offering (but not telling everyone) about the plan. I was paying $24.99 originally and after reading the post I called them and was switched. I have unlimited web and email also works well...Tj

Yeah that will work to switch it off immediately at any time, but doing that still allows apps to call up the 3G connection again whenever they want. The cab should make it so that nothing can access data, even processes that normally use it to auto-update (weather, twitter, etc)

Now, I know there are lots of threads on this already and I took a few minutes skimming search results and didn't find this answered.
Basically, I was hoping to switch myself to the $10 internet plan on T-Mobile rather than paying the $25 internet plan. I bought my phone unlocked from Google.com and not subsidized through T-Mobile. However, when I asked to switch to the other plan, they asked me for my IMEI number on my phone.
Has anyone else been asked for their IMEI when switching to a different data plan? Do they actually have a database of the existing N1 IMEI numbers or are they simply trying to build one? Would I be better off grabbing an old Razr and giving them that IMEI then switching back to my N1?
Lots of questions! Haha.
Anyway, if anyone could shed a bit of light on this I would very much appreciate it.
No, a few months after the initial G1 release T-Mobile caught on to the "scam" and closed the loophole. You have to have an Android data plan now or nothing.

Hmm.. I was under the impression that this was solely for subsidized phones which they already had IMEI's for.
So, in the end, you're stuck paying the extra cost for the Android version of Web even if you bought it unlocked then huh?

Pretty much--don't know what to tell you I bought the phone outright since I didn't want to kill my plan to be forced on the N1 T-Mobile individual plan for at least 4 months...and I was forced to go onto the $25/mos plan from my $20/mos BlackBerry plan.
EDIT: They didn't ask me for what my IMEI number was though. In T-Mobile's system it will probably say I still use a BlackBerry device
The IMEI numbers update automatically in the system on a 2 day lag. So whatever phone you use today will reflect in their system on Saturday. As far as the $10 data plan, it will not work. It should say something to the effect that "you don't have the proper provisioning" or something like that. Basically your eating up too much bandwidth. You obviously had enough money to buy a Nexus 1, but won't pay for the premium data plan? That's the same thing as buying a brand new Ferrari and asking your friends for gas money to go out? At least I see it that way

And, as far as buying an N1 and not paying for the premium plan, the premium plan is great as long as you have a job to afford it. When you get laid off, not so much.

I am currently using a 5.99 plan on my nexus. fast 3.5g internet for really cheap price. it works just fine. they have my imei. they know I am using the internet like that but they don't do anything about it. by simply putting in the epc.tmobile.com apn you'll get full internet on any plan. but this only works for the nexus. no other android phone can use this because tmobile provides the phones not Google.

From what I have been able to find out, if you had the old $6 T-Zones, you were able to be grandfathered in when they cancelled the service. The cheapest net they offer now is the "Phone First/Web2Go" internet which is $10 a month. Essentially the same thing just 4$ more.

Good analogy. However, people don't get rich by spending money. If you can find a way to pay less, you do it. Some people made a financial stretch to afford the N1 and now cannot afford to pay for a premium data service.
Data service is data service and should not be dependent on device. At least I see it that way.
Hey, I'm all fur finding ways to pay as little as possible.
But let's not pretend an extra $15 is breaking the bank.
Hello, I just cancelled my cable TV after realising u rarely watch the 200 channels available.
And all the network channels i can get using a $15 pair if rabbit ears.
HD, .5.1
Next to go is the phone. Experimenting with magic jack this month.
All I want to pay for is high speed internet.
I'll save at least $120 a month
I think the grandfathering is BS because when I first got my G1 I had T-Zones on my old v3 and they made me switch to the newer data plan. To clarify, they had to do it because of activating the phone, so I don't know if you just buy it outright and don't tell them it could work.

I got my phone unlocked. I didnt give them my IMEI, they automatically know it once your sim card is in the phone. Ive had the 5.99 tzones plan for a while now, but this article should help you out http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/5381...ed-data-for-5-99-works-wiphone-and-nexus-one/
edit: this comment by a user might also be helpful.
"as an alternative, i was able to set this up without customer service's help. this was more than a year ago when I setup tzones to work on my treo 650. the trick was that i had an old phone sony ericcson t300 that i had purchased back in 2000 or 2001. I keep it around because if i have an emergency where my phone or my wife's phone stops working i can transfer the sim card quickly to a working phone to make/receive a call. So here's what i did:
setup my sim card in the t300.
make a call or send a text message; long enough to let the t-mobile servers detect that I have switched phones.
log in to t-mobile.com
verify that my phone is now detected as a t300. if not, click on the "not my phone" and change it.
next, adjust service plans, t-zones appears on the list.
add tzones to your billing cycle. make any additional changes you need to make.
save the settings.
change your sim card back to the original phone.
setup the phone for t-zones service"
T-mobile has two data plans.
1) Data plan
2) Sidekick data plan
They have a ton of different pricing for number 1) , the $10 smart web, the $15 dollar smartphone plan, and the $25 android plan.
(I'm not even including all the grandfathered plans like t-zone/t-mobile shadow/blackberry,etc)
The point being they are all the same, they use the same servers, they are all unlimited, so If you can manage to get any of those plans on your bill you will have full 3g/HSPA speed internet on your phone, regardless of what phone it is.
What the heck is that for? Looked at my bill today, Have family unlimited with 2 evo's and noticed a $75 casual data usage on my account. BS!
After a google search of Sprint Casual Data charge it looks like lots of people have incurred these charges and they are bogus!
I've only been with Sprint for 2 months and both bills have been totally screwed up.
Just got of the line with Sprint and they did take it off. They said it was due to the plan being changed and I used date before the new plan took affect. How can you use data when adding a line? I purchased a second phone and changed the plan at the same time.
Here is part of the chat conversation
Agent (Leonoid S): "I can see that you have been billed $75.00 for Internet usage . Also see that the plan is everything data ."
Agent (Leonoid S): "Let me explain this to you ."
Agent (Leonoid S): "You have change the plan on the account on 06/19/2010"
Agent (Leonoid S): "The charge is for using Internet services before the plan change ."
I have this charge too and I know they're gonna remove it as soon as I call them. I had this problem before too with the same $75 amount.
What is it for anyway?

That is Sprint's term for tethering without a plan for it, or using data without a plan (not possible on evo as it requires a data plan).

Yes, but on the Even More Plus, you are not under contract and pay FULL price for your phone.
If you are still under contract you will pay the Early Termination Fee.
Why throw in something that's only relevant to 1 or 2 people? Most of us are under contract.

If you've been with T-Mobile long enough, i'd say like 2+ years... you can ask them to put you on the Even More plus plans..... they ARE getting rid of these plans as it turns out they are not as profitable as they thought they would be.
I personally think thats the best deal around $60 for all that is unbeatable.
Also, if you have a good credit you put the G2 on Interest-free installments.... I paid $250 down and the rest $250 will be added as $25/month on the my bill each month until I finish out the remaining balance.

Honestly, it doesn't take much to get T-Mobile to lower down your prices. You just have to call retentions and make them budge.
I have two friends that JUST switched to T-Mobile from Verizon about two weeks ago. They got the Even More 750 minutes Family Talk and Text Plan for $79.99, and to one of the lines added a $30 Unlimited Android Data Plan and to the other line a $10 Unlimited Feature Phone Data Plan. So in total, their bill came out $120/month.
What I told them to do the very next day is call T-Mobile retentions and tell them that Verizon came calling back with an offer that they couldn't refuse, and since they were in the 14-day trial period, they could leave T-Mobile without having to pay any contract cancellation fee. T-Mobile is not about to let someone walk away. That is just not good business. So they made a counter offer that they couldn't refuse that looked like this:
Even More 750 minutes Family Talk Plan for $59.99/month
Unlimited Text Messaging for $15/month
Preferred Android Unlimited Data Plan for $20/month
Preferred Feature Phone Unlimited Data Plan for $5/month
10% Off Entire Phone Bill every Month through University Affiliation
2 Months Free of Data Charges
That comes out to $90/month, not even including those two free months of data charges. That's a ridiculously good price if you ask me. So next time you call T-Mobile, push them a little. They'll cave eventually.
So this is kinda a long story but bare with me here. Im with t-mobile and I own a galaxy s vibrant. I paid full price for the phone and bought it elsewhere so that when I got it I could simply insert my sim card into the phone and use it on a basic $40 a month (no contract) plan. I didnt need the data plan because I have wifi everywhere I go. Sure, t-mobile doesnt like that idea but there really isnt anything they can do about it.
Anyways... I was telling my friend about that and how I used my old plan to just convert it over to my new phone and I guess he went out and bought a Hero on ebay to do the same thing since he has sprint. Now I never told him to do this but I guess he figured he could do the same thing I did however you guys dont use sim cards like we do and it requires store activation.
Question... Is there anything he can do at all? Not only are they telling him he needs data to activate it but also a new plan that requires a new contract EVEN THOUGH he outright bought the phone elsewhere. Personally I call BS but who knows. Anyway to hack around this?

Wait. It's illegal to activate a phone without a data plan?? WTD??

Not worth trying to use a Hero without a data plan. It's what makes it a good phone. I wouldn't use a Hero just for calls.
Yea I agree with Jedis. A hero without a data plan is useless. Especially if its rooted. I use my hero as a wifi hotspot all the time and if you dont a unlimited data plan you'll get a bill like never before lol

The Hero is not worthless without a data plan. Wifi access, call and text, browsing, email, video, etc..through WiFi, SD card, camera/video, non market installation, and so on and so on.
Is a data plan really a critical part to the Hero's call functionality?

You can call sprint and tell them that you want to do an ESN change from your current phone to the Hero. You just have to get a CS rep that knows what they're doing. Alternatively you can just go to a Sprint store and they can do it.

I have the $30 Pro Pack Data add on, though its not needed.
I'm currently using the HTC Hero as my handset.
PM me for more information.
Not Useless...
I use a Hero without a DATA plan, I mean I have data, with PagePlus but it's only 20MB.. so I use WiFi everywhere, not like it's in shortage.. Now are far as useless, that's where the limited 20MB comes in for the quick/occasional e-mail. I have directions on howto change from Sprint to PagePlus just look for my posts that I've made for detailed instructions, and it's pre-paid so no suprises.
Will this work like the Nexus One on a tmobile internet for $10 if I bought a unlocked version? Like if I can change the mms settings..
If you try the the cheaper data plans not meant for smartphones for an unlocked Nexus S, please write here to tell us how it goes and if it works or not.. Thanks!!
We'll find out on thursday.
My wife called T-mobile last week and they said they discontinued the "smartphone/non-smartphone" unlimited web distinction. They said basically, if you use less than 200 mb/month, you pay $10/mo, if you regularly go over 200mb, you pay $30

Alot of people are grandfathered in.
I have the $5.99 T-Zones plan. Hope this works. Seems like non branded android phones are the only ones to work on these legacy plans

I have a Nexus One and I switched to the Unlimted web for phones for 10 dollars a month just before they took away the subscription, but my phone keeps reverting back to the damn 30 dollar plan?
How do you stop that?

T-mobile should not force you onto the $30 plan, they may block you on the EPC APN, but if you switch to internet2.voicestream.com it should work on $10

Das-mobile is correct but then mms is messed up and you somehow need to add two apn's which someone will help if it works.

I was a new customer last month when I got my MT4G and I asked customer care nicely and they switched me to the $20 unlimited data on both my lines.
I am just curious: How expensive are flatrates in the US?
And how expensive are prepaid-data-flats?

thats different, the old plan was $20 for unlimited text and internet
Im sure it will work... I don't see why not.
FWIW, I just checked on my nexus s, and the 5.99 tzones plan is working for internet access just like it did on the nexus one...so I think the $10 internet plan should work too.
Just make sure you buy the full price phone...or else they will require you to pick up a more expensive web plan.

Yeah, on phones that are tmobile branded, like the vibrant or the G2...you're going to have that problem.
