I am a noob in the Android community, but not to forums of this like. I have searched everywhere for my concerns, but found nothing but post with the same questions and no answers. When I do find the answers, they all seem to revolve around the GSM version and not the CDMA. All the solutions seem to be only for phones rooted (GSM.) PLEASE this IS NOT a revision of the "CDMA Sub-forum Request" thread, but a unified list of what I observe to be issues with the CDMA version of the HTC Hero. My observations are based on experimenting with the Hero and also other threads, which coincide with my observation. I am also aware that 1.6 may fix most of these issues, but 1.6 where you at? As a former WM Mogul/ Touch Pro user I am used to quick fixes with "cab files." From what it seems, I don't think Google likes this type of approach, cause I haven't found any of that sort. So to begin:
1) Bluetooth - Though stereo headset connects, it doesn't connect automatically when I turn it on. I have searched, but is there another way to just turn my Bluetooth and not have to download a toggle or go in to settings to shut the bluetooth on the phone off and on? Is there a tweak to make this connection to go faster? 3 times with me and numerous times with other CDMA Hero users I know have dealt with issues where it won't connect or it would connect, but in 5min.s
2) Notifications - This one is for the users who want a tad bit more privacy. I downloaded ChompSMS (which I recommend,) but why do we have to download an application to simply make it so no Notifications show up on the front of the lock screen. I guess you could say I am a private user who doesn't want to use a lock code. I tried shutting off Notifications, but it completely shuts off notifications. Is there any sort of tweak that will allow notifications to alert ONLY through sound and vibration and show up on the notification bar without the number and message?
3) Movies - I know Google hates AVI files so I downloaded a converter for MP4. I know this is 1 thing that 1.6 is said to fix, but does any one have a fix for this Choppiness or are we doomed till 1.6 comes out?
4) Applications - Alot of Sprint junk (need I say more?)
5) YouTube App - How do we keep it at High Resolution?
6) Who are the major Players in hacking this phone? - For WM I could name many from Mighty Mike to Psyki. Who can I run to for this CDMA version of the HTC Hero? Tried to search around, but found people like myself asking questions as opposed to people giving answers. I guess cause the community isn't as big
7) Scrolling - Is it me or is there some choppiness when scrolling through the phone. Now the phone is smoother than most WM devices available, but I see the stuttering on the scrolling and some of the transitions of the phone.
8) Any alternative to tweak the phone besides rooting the phone
9) Why can't we get Gmail to push on the Email Widget?
May seem like alot of qualms with the phone, but it is only a spec of how I feel about the phone cause I Love it. Also I am aware that maybe 1 or 2 of the questions have been asked. I want new CDMA users to be able to find a unified thread that will answer most of the issues that i found relative to other CDMA users I know. I know alot of users cause I see them all the time. I actually work for Sprint and I am also an official advocate for the phone. I have been steadily doing my research, but the ones explained above I have no answers to. Please do not close my thread because you think it is a repeat thread. It is questions regarding CDMA and CDMA only, cause all the other threads are Ambiguous. I don't know if they are for CDMA or GSM only. Instead of bashing could I get a reply like "1) http://www.example.com," or "1) and 2) this is how you solve the issue" or something of the like. Since I don't know anything about making tweaks, this is my way to find a solution to this vast CDMA problem of not finding solid answers. Oh yeah, please if you leave us new CDMA users a link, don't leave that link that leads us into Google search or XDA search. I already know about that one. Thanx people
For question 2 about the sms notifications in the bar but not displaying a preview of the message, I use handcent vs chompsms. I like the UI better and it incorporates numerous options for notifications, including showing a new message icon in the notification bar without displaying the message preview.
My only real concerns on the phone are A] battery life. I'm doing a lot of testing on this and should have some solid baselines soon. B] Trackball sensitivity. I love the idea of using a trackball for navigating parts of the UI, but it is just too darn slow. One half of a revolution of the ball for example only moves the cursor in a text field one character. This is horrible. It takes a long time to scroll back the beginning of the text. For now I find myself just using the touch interface for most of what I would use the trackball for. There has got to be a fix for this.
I am also a Sprint employee and offical advocate for the CDMA Hero. Looks like we share a lot of common concerns. Coming from WinMo and Blackberry, i was excited about the Andriod platform, but it seems like (maybe because the phone is so new) that there AREN'T any major players yet. I've read several forums here on Xda about people showing interest about rooting but not much about actual attempts. i have tried several methods built for the GSM versions, but all have failed. Myself and another guy were sucessful in getting the phone into bootloader, but I'm hesitant to flash a GSM rom onto the phone even though 1.6 is supposed to have native CDMA support. Anyhow, let me know if you find anyhting and i'll do likewise.
I still haven't figured out how to tether my cdma Hero. I keep getting errorcode 65 and 67 when I try to use the mobile network sharing on the phone.
I believe you will find that Sprint have disable tethering - i.e. it's a network issue, not a phone issue.
Try PDAnet (google it!) as I've heard this gets around this.
Regards,
Dave
tethering sucess
ive managed to tether my sprint hero using both the native 'mobile network sharing' and pdanet.
the pdanet one is pretty easy to use, but to use MNS, you have to install the NDIS driver. You have to install HTC Sync, but this does not install the NDIS driver directly, just gives you access to it which is located in the HTC Sync install folder in the usb drivers sub-folder (can't remember the exact name of it).
You have to go into device manager and find the unknown device that represents the phone and manually update it.
Once installed, it should add a network connection and you should be all set.

I think I need you to be a little more specific about this: What was the item you updated in your device manager? I checked my driver and the downloaded version of HTC Synch installed the NDIS driver and automatically generated the connection on the My Connections page (Win XP) but I still get the error 67 when I try to connect to the internet.

pdanet says fail to open device for file transfer
and MNS still will not work after selecting the ndis driver
yeah, i got that error message every so often...i just disconnected it all, turned MNS off, connected it back up, then reenabled it.
i will try again later on tonight and get back to you
well its a discovery to me, and i haven't seen anything about this here so i though i would post this
also, long time reader, first time poster. lol
anyways, i have been trying to figure out why voice command would not do what i picked it up for: announce caller id.
well everyone said you had to go to settings an enable caller id, well alot of us couldn't because we don't have the settings shortcut and i was one of them.
well i found how to access to settings, for at least me. i use nrg roms, but i don't use sense even though its pretty sweet, i prefer spb.
but anyways i was playing with the settings "pane" in sense and noticed another entry called "other"-"misc settings" so i opened it up and there was voice-command settings????
the strange thing is that now that i have accessed the vc settings from sense now i can access these settings from the start menu and spb in addition to sense.
so now i am able to enable caller id announcements, but it still wont send the announcement to my bluetooth, which i believe is a known issue that hopefully can i can figure out
i believe all of this worked before i started using custom roms.
oops i guess i have posted on a non related topic before
Hi, I am newbie here but spent a lot of time testing the builds that developers have offered us. Big thanks to all the developers who are truly making HD2 more sexy and top toy in the market even though it has been there for almost a year (which merely happens to other phones, dare I say this?)
Currently using Froyo (mattc, RC1.2) on HD2 with exceller dualboot loader (V1.02), working very stable and smooth. Asides the points which have been listed in their posts, I found the following not functioning properly (or just happened to m2??)
1. Every time it reboots, the bluetooth automatically turns on (reported by other users). The HTC bluetooth toggle works funny when I tap it to turn it off- becomes gray but seems refuses to turn off...
2. Can not use google voice search- "process com.google.android voicesearch has stopped unexpectedly-force close". Found some solution in Android Software Development in the forum (just search "voice search"), but I suppose it is only for nand android thus not the solution for our case?
3. The voice in Google navigation is funny, quite robot-ish, any way to change it?
4. My winxp-64bit cannot recognize it as USB storage. Charging with USB cable to PC is fine, but it does not pop-out for selection of functionality, even I manually change it to USB storage. (solved: using different USB port followed by uninstalling the driver in PC device manager, also I installed JRT Auto Mount software listed in market, which might help as well))
5...
Hope this thread is useful, and list your findings here so that our lovely developer can make HD2 perfect.

This is totally normal. It is a Text-To-Speech-Technology
Advantage: Everything is spoken - Streetnames, Cities, Autobahn-Numbers etc.
Disadvantage: It sounds like an robot.
no internet .. no my location update.... stock 1.66 greek rom... 2.12.50.2.2 radio....
if you have no internet connection you should check your provider APN and the option you subscribed, I need to change the APN name each time I re install a android rom but it works !!!
I am unable to switch off the setting to stop downloading data automatically although I have unticked the box.
I continues to update the weather every hour complete with graphics.
I would like to switch it off and only download when I need it
Any suggestions?
Hi,
I have a french version, but I try to translate, the naming will probaly not exact:
1) go to parameter (settings) page.
2) tap on "DATA service" (service de données in French)
3) Here, you will find what you want, "weather" and then untick "auto download"
I hope it helps
Thanks I have done that but it hasn't stopped the automatic data download
Are you sure that is the Weather the cause of update ?
Ther are a lot of other aplications e-mail, Stocks, GPS update, application update,....
By me all this things seems to work well. Elsewhere, there is an application that stops all the phone communication : nodata. I do not use it but I read this work very well on mini.
NoData
Hi,
See if the program "NoData" doesn't help you. It allows you to black access to the internet via your phone system. Sure worked for me.
Luck
The Weather tab is a big resource hog. I also suspect some bugs in it that can cause your phone to freeze. (Not verified yet. But one of my prime suspects.)
I would suggest to disable the whole weather thing altogether.
Which resourses does the weather program hog? I magine that it's a load on the battery, and the graphic use up a lot of memory. Are there any others? I would never use my mobile provider to update anything in my phone. I do it when I sync or find a hotspot.
How would you disable it?
I am only curious, so when you have a moment, I'd be interested in your response.
Thanks
Primary the ram memory. I notice it ate up several megabytes of ram. I forgot to jot down exactly how many. It certainly is not as small as 1Mb or 2Mb. Somewhere closer to 10Mb. It's huge.
Disable it from "Personalize Home Screen Tabs".
Basically, take it off the tabs. And don't update it. After a few days, it will just die off.
Thanks. Memory is not an issue for me now, but I"ll keep it in mind.
So I was browsing through settings, and I found "Settings" -> "Data Manager" -> "Data Meter" displays a nice little daily graph of data use.
Then if you press "Show usage by activity" you get a nice little pie chart.
But oh noes! The "Gallery" app is using 40% of my dataz???
Why does an app for storing photos use a greater percentage of my data than "Browser" and "Touchdown" combined???
[paranoia]Unless... it is uploading my photos somewhere. Is Motorola/T-Mo archiving all my photos so that they can data mine them later?[/paranoia]
Gallery settings shed no light on this. Ideas on how to figure this out?
Oh damn, u are right. What is it doing?. Syncing photos to Picasa or getting Picasa photos to mobile? me no techie but thats the only option I can think form Google point of view.
And i noticed Connected Music Player using equally as much data as the gallery. Wonder how this is happening. I dont listen to anything like podcast or internet radio with the player. Hmmm. .
Count me in. I noticed that some days ago, still no clue :-\
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Also, I should point out that I have had GPS turned off the entire time, and geotagging turned off on the camera.
Someone who has a bit more skill with the Shark for Root and Shark Reader apps can probably figure out what packets are going where and why... anyone?
EDIT: I'm blocking the app with DroidWall, a free firewall software. If you use it, make sure to set it to "blacklist" at the top and then check the two boxes next to "Media Storage, OMA Download, etc. etc." which is the one with "Gallery" in it. Then press the settings button on your Defy and choose "save rules". You can also enable logging - I am going to check back in a couple of days and see what the log says...
Hmm, I would be interested in checking this out for myself, but I don't even have "data meter" in the data manager menu. The only option I see is "data delivery."

Same here, no such "meter" in mine. My phone is a T-Mobile USA branded phone. Was it deleted from later builds? BTW there is a discussion this same gallery/data issue on one of the Motorola forums.
Yeah I should mention that I am running the Android 2.1 firmware v.2.34 european rom on my USA phone. T-Mo cripples a lot of the features that let you see what your phone is doing for the USA phones.
Question is, are these "- manager" apps reliable? A few days ago, when I was looking into Battery manager what had been using my power, Maps was hands down the biggest juice stealer at about 50%. "Mobile standby", "Phone Idle" and "Display" was somewhere between 4-25% each. I had my gps disabled, no Latitude, no navigation no nothing.
Now, however, Maps doesn´t even show up in that list, and I haven´t been making any adjustments, apart from a different launcher.
finally I found someone with the same problem with me.. I've already posted about this thing a few days ago in a different forum with no results..
and someone directs me here..
still hopes for some solutions.. my defy is a tmobile us defy using 2.34 central europe no-blur rom..
I haven't used any data connection since the revelation of gallery data abuse...
about batery meter.. it's true that maps would use most of the battery juice even though you just use it under 10 minutes... because if you turn them on, the most power drawn was from the display.. the GPS and data comes next.. so if in 2 days you don't use any of those.. the maps battery usage will certainly vanished from the battery meter..
On the USA phone (and probably others) go into the INFO menu: dialer > *#*#4636#*#* > usage statistics > usage time/launch count/application name. Not the same as a pie chart for actual data used but it does seem to show what's being used and for how long and how often.
Then on the menu just before "usage statistics" there is "battery history" which has several selections including "network usage". If you tap on one of the applications listed you will get another menu that gives Bytes received and Bytes sent. The initial settings are:
"Since last unplugged"
"Total since boot"
"Total in all time"
Thanks for the tip scrannel, I had forgotten about that.
So if I go to *#*#4636#*#*, then "battery history", then "network usage", then "Total in all time" my number one application is "Media". If I click on that, then it turns out that it is the same application package that contains Gallery - so that is why Gallery shows up on the pie chart.
The application package includes:
DRM Protected Content Storage
Download Manager
Gallery
Media Storage
MediaSync
OMA Download
com.motorola.android.oma.drm
com.motorola.android.wmdrm.dla
I would suspect that it is the Download Manager that is the culprit here. So I would assume that "Media" (aka "Gallery") is huge because of all of the files I have downloaded, and Browser is the separate list just web pages / html.
I particularly like the category: "Total in all time"... like Android use going back to the Big Bang.
I asked support about the 'Gallery' issue a few weeks ago. Their final reply, after some investigation was:
"We have checked this with our technicians and would like to say that this reading of data transferred in not accurate in the phone software. We have reported it to our engineers and it should be corrected in a future update.
For now, we can advise that to check the amount of data transferred you use the phone's data manager or some application from the Android Marketplace."
So, they say the data manager is not accurate and then advise you to use the data manager. There you have it.
One suggestion that makes some sense is that all the pictures downloaded in FB, Twitter etc. notifications are counted in the 'Gallery'.
They said their data manager was not accurate and that you may find a better one on the market.
Don't know about gallery, but connect music player will use some data for lyrics and other info....though maybe not as much as is being reported by what could be a bad data manager.

Possible solution
Hi there, just got myself a Defy and have skimmed through this thread.
I think I MAY have solved this issue, though won't know for sure for at least a couple of hours (time to check usage etc)
If you go into settings, accounts, there will be your motoblur, google, facebook and any others you might have added.
If you stay on the list of accounts screen and tap menu, you will see a tab that says "picture source" Mine was selected as facebook so I deleted that account from there.
I am using a different facebook app now, just the standard facebook for android from the market that usually comes with the htc phones.
I have only just changed this setting so won't know for sure until it's been changed for a while.
It does mean that you won't be able to use the social networking app that comes with the phone unless you can set it to NOT use it as the picture source. I couldn't change mine so just deleted that account. You can still use facebook widgets, just don't use the internal social networking app.
Hope this is of some use to you all.
Alison
Gallery app just took 305mb in less than an hour.
Just had this problem with my new SGS3.. By chance I had a limit set on my data, but it still download in background 305mb.. can't find what it is. The "Sync Google Photos" and "Sync Picasa Web Albums" did not ran at all today so it's not the cause.. but I must find why it download that much on mobile data, when I was all night long on wifi so it should have download what it needs last night.

Please post your problem in s3 thread because of different hardware and software. You wont get a solution here for this problem.
So my advice, post it in a s3 thread to get the best help.

Yeah, sorry about that. I noticed after posting, and then post it in general Q/A.
Thanks
