Back in mid August Slashgear.com reported that HTC told them there were two ROM updates for the Hero in the coming weeks. The first one should be released "within 10 days", while a major update would be coming in mid September.
As we all know many more than 10 days has passed since that report and we didn't get an official update. My initial though was that they were combining the two updates into one, since it is not a good idea to release two updates in a short period of time especially when installing the update require a wipe.
But honestly, beside the significant speed improvement, there is really nothing "major" in this ROM update, feature-wise I mean. Seeing the release of the 1.6 SDK today, I can't stop but think that the "major update" they mentioned is the Android 1.6 update for the Hero.
If you watch the video about Android 1.6 on Android Developer Blog, they mentioned that a main feature added to the 1.6 update is CDMA support. Since Sprint's Hero will be a CDMA phone, it needs Android 1.6. As Sprint is shipping their version of the Hero in October 11, I guess the "major" update for the Hero may get released around that time too. What do you think?

For being the "minor" update it was quite a big update...
I mean, headphone jack works flawlessly, LEDs are working too, a major speed optimization in the UI/OS... it was a well needed update. Now let's look forward to the Donut/1.6 update.
BRING IT ON Google/HTC.
i hope another update will be comeing soon because i´m missing the announced virtual java implementation

I concur with your reasoning here - Donut (1.6) is required for CDMA, and the Sprint Hero is CDMA. This will have a different radio obviously, but assuming the rest of the hardware is relatively similar (and the specs would seem to show this) there shouldn't be too much work for HTC getting this ROM working on the GSM Hero, so hopefully it will follow relatively soon after the Sprint Hero is released.

Dave
The recent update is mostly UI (sense) optimisations. In addition there's a number of serious bugs in the applications that HTC needs to address. Some of these bugs were already solved in the applications delivered with the android 1.5 (cupcake) development-kit, so I really hope HTC fixes them too. This includes problems such as calls and SMS's that are missed, and HTC-mail being unable to display certain messages. There are also too frequent application crashes, if you compare the quality of this android-distribution to that of most regular linux distributions. Applications on a hand-held linux-device should be just as stable as those which are used on a linux desktop.

Do you have a download link?
around to web browsing on the new ROM? Is the scrolling of pages fast on the websites as well like the Iphone 3GS? There was a lot of lag in scrolling web pages as well.
How are the web pages looking now?
Do we have an equaliser on the new ROM as well?
Has it resolved the google calender sync problem?

The Donut SDK is on the official Android website, android.com
Drizzy (and Paul from MoDaCo I think) have said that they have a 2.8something version of the software but cannot leak it yet due to their source. Have no idea what it has to offer but hopefully it's another great boost!
I think this was the "minor" update if you can call it that. and that the bigge one will include 1.6 Donut

hehe Nexus One is a HTC device so "never buying HTC devices again" but "Buying Nexus One" is kinda stupid
Although I must say, I would prefer Nexus One over the Desire just because I know Google will "always" make sure it'll get new software updates and the Desire updates will be postponed just like the Hero ones due to business agreements and SenseUI issues and more...
I have been using Legends n Eris's ROMS ported onto Hero, so far.. But all that I want is a stable 2.1 ROM from HTC.. Instead of releasing new phones like Legend (Which is just a metal upgrade for HTC Hero + 1GHz proc) they should have concentrated on releasing update for Hero which has a large customer base. And I even read somewhere that Both Sprint Hero n GSM Hero have won awards in their respective categories.. This aint happening..

This isn't a press release - it's rumour and supposition, the same as all the rumour threads on this site.
It may well be that the update doesn't come until April, but this poorly written article isn't an official HTC missive and therefore should be treated as hearsay at best and a fabrication at worst.

Dear Customer,
We understand that now that a phone running Android OS 2.1 is available that you are excited to get an update for your Hero. We are still hard at work building Sense for this new version but we expect to have the upgrade finished and ready to go soon. Please understand that it takes time to customize any Android version to ensure you have the intuitive experience Sense provides, and we hope you can be patient for just a little while longer.

Inquiry Description Hi, I have been waiting for Android 2.1 Update for my HTC Hero from last 3 months. All that I have got is news of update being getting postponed. Recent one told me that the update is coming in "LATE APRIL". :-( Harsha S
Issue Date & Time
2010/03/17 10:05
I think that HTC should schedule two differents update for each android device, one with clean android OS and optimized drivers focused on specific hardware, and one with optimized senseUI and others HTC customizations... in that case, it could follow OS upgrade very fast and satisfy who want to be updated with OS, and then take all required time to optimize and develop custom UI...
anyway... it is exciting to test and try custom 2.1 roms and the developers here at xda are doing a great work!
but it is also frustrating to wait for HTC official update!
Yeah getting access to a new kernal would be nice
Is this update so important???
We can flash HERO with a good working port rom and we have 2.1
I do not see the problem haha

Sure we have some nice 2.1 roms at the moment but they are inherently buggy with things that will definitely be fixed when we can lay our hands on an official rom things like battery life and 3d graphics.

I've seen that too! I've seen all the threads, and not one of them has an "official" date in it.
The simple fact of the matter is that HTC customer care do not have a clue. Take anything you read as coming from them with a large pinch of salt.
Regardless, this doesn't change the fact that the "press release" you linked to is clearly not an official HTC statement.

What!?
Ok so this has pi**ed me off. I have been waiting for the 2.1 official update to be released now for a LONG time - the issue really is that it was "meant" to come around about now (mid March). It's the fact that it's seeming been pushed back and now artificially put on hold because they don't want to affect the freaking Leg-end. I'd much rather they just announced the update wil be available on a specific date - 23rd July for e.g. and then if it's early its a bonus. They must be aware/accept that Android users are going to be more tech-savvy than most and will therefore not appreciate being jerked around and left in the lurch while users of other Android handsets have 2.1 already and have for a while now = no real technical reason for the delay as far as I'm concerned.
Having said all the above - what do HTC care? If someone from HTC reads these forums then the above is my 2 cents and I think they would create a lot of GOODwill instead of resentment if they were more transparent with their customers. I'm seriously doubting whether to buy HTC or HTC made again because I *like* to be up-to-date with functionalities etc. A platform like Android was *made* to be upgradeable and improved upon and this is a clear case of HTC's beuracracy getting in the way of their customer service. They don't have to do jack sh*t for their customers though because of course once you've bought a phone you're usually locked in - but they sure as hell could learn a thing or two about engendering customer appreciation and loyalty.
So there will be people out there who think "What's the problem?! Your phone runs fine!" Well if you're asking that question then you're probably not reading this forum in the first place because then why would you have any interest in phone OS development and all the joys it brings.
I hope this report is wrong. I hope the ROM comes very soon because I guarantee HTC (not that they care) that delaying it much longer will do quite a lot to put people off their SenseUI phones and HTC in general. Apple is due to release 4.0 soon and Microsoft is about to unleash Winmo7 series so it's not like there's a lack of competition.
You all know what i MEAN - even if i didn't say it right!
I haven't yet found a single 2.1 rom that is stable enough to use daily and that includes my respect and reverence for the talent and hard work that goes into making these cooked roms.
Ola!

Unless they need to make some changes for the hero that we haven't considered?
Can't think what though
What's wrong with 1.5?
Why is everyone so desperate to get 2.1 on their Hero. The 1.5 ROM works very well for me anyway and I don't have any battery or any other problems.
I've tried all the various 2.1 ROMs on this board and while they are very well done I haven't found any to have the battery life of 1.5 so have always reverted back to the shipped ROM.
Now if 1.5 was full of bugs then I could understand all the fuss. As it's not - I can't.
Don't get me wrong I shall upgrade to 2.1 as soon as it's released I just can't understand the rush.
Is there some "must have" facility that I'm missing on the 2.1 ROM?
Hallo! i have heard allot of rumours that legend won't be getting froyo
is it true?
like you said they are rumours.
just wait. think there will soon be more info from htc when the first 2.2 phones are released.
the rumours are indeed very iffy
I honestly just posted an entire rant last night about this, allow me to quote myself...
kylecore said:
Well I've heard multiple times before this that customer service reps from htc have also confirmed the update to froyo for the legend. The most recent being an email from a customer service rep stating that the user fear not about his flash playing troubles because android 2.2 and incidentally flash 10.1 would be released for the htc legend within the next 2 weeks.
Follow this up by the recent release of flash 10.1 for android 2.2 and the release of the android 2.2 source code being released today the statement of "within the next 2 weeks" seem to be exactly what is happening. Not only is android 2.2 pretty much here but will be available sooner rather then later. To add further flame to the fire htc repeatedly said android 2.2 will be supported by almost all 2010 devices and with the desire being more widely available and more powerful it is more likely to be put in with definite android 2.2 compatible even though the desire and legend get almost always get updates at the same time.
The most likely reason the statement was pulled? Well it must simply be due to google not publishing the source code yet, thus letting people essentially know froyo is ready.
Htc most certainly can't pull the plug on 2.2 before google itself does. But! Now that it has published final froyo source code it is 99.9% done and is most likely waiting to be uploaded to the server.
My uneducated guess is that we'll see froyo on the legend by mid july at the latest.
Also not sure if anyone thought of this, but bell (and indirectly virgin mobile canada) are not stupid companies. They are introducing a new android phone and thus throwing massive amounts of ad $ and marketing into it, from both bell/virgin AND htc itself. Remember this is virgins FIRST android set and bells 4th or 5th, they would most likely have talked to htc to make sure the device is upgradeable to the newest android. They just started selling it, they aren't going to allow it to be out dated within the month its released! If the did it would be a waste on advertising and a waste of introducing a new phone.
That's just my 2 cents, but it seems very logical to me, how about you?

Adobe didn't state HTC Legend on their supported devices list...could this mean no 2.2 for Legend? or Is HTC dumbing down 2.2 for Legend as they did with 2.1?
If 2.2 is dumbed down for Legend, it better have WiFi hotspot as a stock 2.2 rom would have, or I am going to be one pissed off long legged puerto rican!
I've seen lots of information flying around on Engadget and the like about HTC 2.2 updates forthcoming, but I have yet to see anything at all about the Aria.
Does anyone have any idea if HTC / AT&T intend to update the Aria to 2.2? Of course I know if they don't, we have some guys working hard on unofficial versions. Just would like to know if we'll get anything official...
HTC has stated they're working on it, and they "hope to have it done by christmas" but I wouldn't hold my breath for it to get thru HTC and AT&T for the Aria by then. Last I can remember, the HTC Wildfire was listed as getting the update and the Aria is very similar to said device. I also recall hearing that HTC said all the devices released past a certain point this year (Aria falls within this range) will be getting 2.2. I'm sure the Aria will get it, but again, I wouldn't hold my breath, CM6 will most likely be in full functioning order before official Froyo
Will definitely be trying out CM6 as soon as it gets in a little more working order! Definitely not holding my breath on HTC + AT&T...especially not the AT&T part of that equation.
Nothing official about the Aria, but HTC Evo is getting some official 2.2 Froyo loving tomorrow.
Maybe with that, we can hope for an earlier release for the Aria.
I wont hold my breath, the Motorola Back flip have been out for how long and its still on the launch firmware. ATT will take their sweet time when HTC releases it to them, best chance is that someone here gets their hand on is and bakes a 2.2 with HTC Sense rom for Aria users to flash with.

Considering how the Backflip went, this isn't surprising. Why could a company back a device that isn't doing much on it's own already?
Might be coming sooner than some of you expect. HTC seems to be getting serious about froyo

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/htc-will-ship-all-android-phones-in-china-with-froyo-on-board-f/
Granted we'll have to deal with att.
I think we will see one, but it will be a pain to install. The phone, for whatever reason, cannot accepted over-the-air (OTA) updates... there's no option in the settings to see if there is an update like most other android phones. HTC has said you will need to use HTC sync to upgrade. (Though I'm sure many of the people here at xda will have no problem loading the ROM via Sync or other ways, for regular users this could be a pain.)
Thought I'd share. I found this bit of info on the htc support forums in the aria section.
Posted by HeavenLee on 22 Jul 2010 2:12 PM
Whne there is an update for the Aria-it will have to be loaded from a PC to your device. The good news is that after the first update for the Aria, Firmware Over The Air will be implemented so that any subsequent updates will arrive to your device over the Air once their are released. Currently, there are no updates for the Aria OS-they are in the works.
So it is quite possible we may be getting froyo because she said it's "in the works." One of the other HTC forum moderators said it may take a while because it will be "tested and approved" by att and that we'll need to update it via sync.
So from what I understand, she said after the first update, there will be more updates released OTA. Froyo is gonna be a sync update so when she says any subsequent updates will arrive, does that mean she's hinting we'll be getting updates past froyo? Maybe we'll be able to get 3.0 ;P I mean what other updates will there be? lol
I'd LOVE to get 3.0, but I'll be happy with 2.2.
There is a post at Unwired review (can't post link until my account is verified.. not sure if there is a way to 'request' to be verified), but it's from Unwired Review. Just google "Android 3 Gingerbread."
But then there was an update to the post:
Update: I posted an update to this post, where I address Dan Morrill’s tweet, and do some corrections/clarifications regarding the upcoming Android update number issues, “minimum” specs – thay are actually only “recommended”, and the the split between high end Android 3 – low end Android 2.2 devices – it’s not an official Google policy, but it is happening nonetheless.

So could we get it? Yes. And I think with the speed htc is pushing out the updates, it's not a question for them of "do we update the aria," it's the same question for many of their phones, since so many htc android phones are similiar inside and out.
Froyo for the Aria is something I have been looking forward to for a while now, and seeing it any later than October would be a huge letdown.

It has already been stated numerous times that the X10 will not have an official release based on another OS than 2.1 ... What is the point of such a poll?
really....they also announced about no multi touch too
and if you see the hardware,it is capable of all OS...there are many videos showing with 2.3
for multitouch there was an official announcement explaining they found a way to enable it and it will be added in a future release against what they previously announced
I am well aware of what the hardware is capable of and I am absolutely certain that devs here will make a 2.3 build for the X10.
The key word though is Sony Ericsson. They have never had a plan to bring the X10 to a higher android release than 2.1 as new handsets are due for release in the next month and they will run 2.3 to show the public they are to replace the current handsets. It would make no sense commercially for SE to update its old handsets when new ones are available

There was an official announcement that the X10 didn't have the hardware support for multitouch(counting from dualtouch)...but any capacitive screen can do that, then they suddently said that they found a way to make it work...everyone knows that the dualtouch being used in our x10s is the same that appears on nexus one and HTC desire so they didn't discover anything, they just didn't wanted to work on it when they said that, so they "LIED" when they said their first statement.
Talking about android OS support, i haven't read anything related to "which OS will be the last one" from SE. Remember that some said that there will not be any updates for the X10 in 2011 according to that famous document showing future updates and we know now that it is not true.
Anyway i'm not saying that we will have 2.2, 2.3 o 100.1, i'm just saying that people on SE change their minds a lot
thati right.
Ok firstly i think it will be 2.2
secondly SE have never said they wont update higher than 2.1, they just havent confirmed that they are yet. the roadmap didn't state any higher than 2.1 but the roadmap didn't state end of support.
now sonyericsson have stated that they will suport phone for two years after release and the x10 was Released 2010, March this means they dont stop with software support until march 2012. so it highly likely well get 2.2
I think that we will at least get 2.2 before end of life, although, I'm sure that it'll run honeycomb just fine. I'm hoping for at least 2.3.

spot on there PiLoT. The roadmap was a 2010 roadmap, it showed nothing for 2011 or further because it was a 2010 ROADMAP! All people seem to remember was that it showed nothing higher than 2.1 by the end of 2010, and guess what...that is where we are at right now - bang on schedule!
i would think 2.3 if anything, and have voted as such
I hope we all get what we want...... Me I want 2.3 or some clever man from here to get a solid 2.2
Sent from my X10i using XDA App on the bog
Actually, the X10 would run super well with 2.2 especially with the increase in performance of 2.2. I would certainly hope the X10 would get AT LEAST 2.2. Getting 2.3 would be even sweeter but at least 2.2.
It's capable of running froyo and it would be a waste of a good phone without it since it is proven that 2.2 increases performance by a lot. So hopefully, SE, you can fulfill that.
I personally believe that the X10 will never be updated beyond 2.1. Yes, we will get multitouch but why would they give their old phones the same software as all the new ones that will be announced in february? All they want to do is sell as many new phones (the most expensive one they make) as possible. So for now they will keep feeding us info on all the marvelous things the X10 will still get to boost the current X10 sales and from the moment the new models come out they will just dump the X10 because they have a new flagship with 2.3 installed out of the box.
I can be wrong but I'm afraid this is what is going to happen.
Hi,
I voted (wishfull thinking) 2.3...

I think opposite regarding what it means to have commercial sense. If I believe that SE will support my investment for a period of 2 years, keeping the product up to date, I will be more willing and confident to buy again SE products. In a competitive market sticking passionate consumers to our brand is a key factor to prosper.
New products should get their share through new hw features explored by new sw apps rather than the supporting OS.

My skeptic side says that we'll only see 2.2.
But with news of the X10 mini successor running snapdragon and 2.3, it looks as if they would be able to get 2.3 running on our current x10 without too much extra effort.
And like what everyone else has said here, nearly all of the prototypes have been running 2.3. It appears that they're skipping 2.2; why bother getting it to run when it may be simpler to port it from the next x10 mini to the current x10?
I'm quite sure that X10 will remain a 2.1 device.
We will get a couple of updates (the promised dual touch and UXP update), maybe even some bug fix (but not the in-call volume, that's NOT a bug you hearing-impaired pests!), but not a new OS version.
For the morons in the SE board of directors a OS upgrade for a year old device would be just a waste of money.
not trying to be pesimistic but i don't see any update further than 2.2
Hi all, probably a stupid remark here pardon for am just a junior, just couldn't help my self, rather than just hoping, any way we could probably push SE on a clash action against them to update this lovely phone. any body a lawyer here. just to explore tho possibility, cause they promised a support at least patches along the life of the handset, and there are bugs on 2.1 that is pathed on 2.2, and this is minor revision, and another in 2.3 also minor. later on 3.0 that is Major.........
well just an Idea........
Sorry For the Bad english
next firmware will be harder to root
SE can't expect anyone who has the X10's to go out and purchase another phone, 1 year after the run around they have put us through unless they offer a trade-up program for those of us who actually paid money for these phones.
SE believes that it is offering the most stable firmwares of it's competitors and that this caution on it's part to make certain the 'experience' is better for the customers. While bugs do get through or some things get overlooked, SE has historically fixed many bugs in their firmware in the past (save the P1). The call volume will never be fully corrected in the phone, and the inability to use the phone in loud environments is because there's no noise canceling hardware.
UXP going lite? Well, it's SE's defining application and they released the SDK for the vortex et al. Lite I'll believe when I see it. You can tell it not to update automatically in the background and the widget can be removed from the Home screen. This app and the rounded cases with the hardware buttons is the internal 'style' of the phone. And if Timescape worked better and integrated with Twitter better, it is sort of neat. It's surprising that a company that has a much java experience as SE didn't see the performance issues.
SE claims to have submitted many fixes to Android (90?) and had about half of them accepted. There's some video from one of the developers at developerworld (I think) that says this.
Before I got my x10 I was certain that when the x12 or whatever it's called is released, the x10 would be updated to the same firmware level, and that would be the last update for the current generation (unless there were serious bugs that did not require a newer version of Android to correct). Today, I could toss a coin since I think SE's choice to NOT put a full 512mb ROM in this phone was as much about not expecting it to be upgradable as saving a few cents per unit.
Whatever happens, this is what I 'think' will happen.
1. No improvement in the screen colors. It's such a easy way to get better performance, not increasing the screen colors.
2. Any new firmware they release will have the standard Android rooting hacks blocked. SE really doesn't want you screwing with the phone, and carriers don't want you taking their apps off, even if you don't use them. Google's comments on 'wishing the phones were more open' came right about the time the little update to 2.1 was released that now with the still uncracked bootloader, makes SE the 'most secure' phone. This could be a selling point with all carriers.
3. AT&T may not ever release another approved version of firmware. This phone is not important to them, they've been trying to give them away 2 for 1, yet they have yet to offer a discount or sale on Captivates which outsell X10's by many multiples. Even SonyStyle was offering the phone for free with a new contract as if they were Amazon or BestBuy.
It may be best to move to a generic version to that if SE continues to release fixes or updates, it's available to you without the carrier's approval.
