I am the primary number on a 3 line family plan and got the Hero in Oct.
I called today and the sprint rep said I was fully upgrade eligible for the Evo at $199. SWEET
I asked if I could pre-order and he said not until June 4rth. I asked about going to BB or the shack and he said that if I bought the phone there, if I have any problems with anything, I need to go back to them for service.
Questions:
Which is better for service, BB or Shack, or Sprint?
I have the $7 warranty from Sprint, can I get that if I buy at BB or shack?
If I do upgrade, do you think my Hero will be eligible for a buy back from Sprint?

The warranty is applied to whatever phone is on the account, regardless of where you buy it from.
Hmm, looking at the sprint site, it doesn't appear I am upgrade eligible. or I am reading it wrong.
How can I tell if I am eligible?
hmmm...
If I were you, I'd just walk into a Sprint store and speak with the person that looks like they've worked there the longest.
Then, go into a different store and do the same.
Sounds odd, but with Big Red I've walked into different stores and gotten different answers to my questions. Naturally, I made purchases at the stores that provided the answers I wanted
supossedly, according to slickdeals the best cheapest price is available at Sams Club since they give you an instant $40 rebate on new activations. so you could get it for $159 there
Best Buy offers insurance for 10 bucks a month (3 more than sprints 7). The guy told me that if anything happened to it by my fault, i.e. dropping it in in the doodoo station, they would replace it, no questions asked, with no deductible..
you can add the $7 Sprint insurance to your plan at anytime online through your sprint account.
does radio shack have anything like that best buy $10 a month insurance? If i knew about that I may have preordered there instead

no deductible is nice. but 36 extra a month. I've had my vogue for 23 months, haven't needed to use the TEP once . . . thinking about going it without insurance at all, but of course, that's when my phone will get stolen month 2
Purchase the Evo through BB but stay with TEP on Sprint (Total Equip Protection) this way your covered in any situation (liquid damage, lost, stolen, damaged beyond repair) and you still get it for $199 with the instant rebate and no mail in rebate that needs 14 weeks to be received ($100 off)

RadioShack has a 2 year service plan, $124.99 upfront, no deductible. Cover's normal wear and tear, manufacturers defects, damage from dust, heat, light, humidity, and cold, and corrossion due to moisture damage.

If you're the impatient type, remember that BB and the Shack are the only ones where you can preorder and be sure you get one on release day...without a MIR.
Hmm, Sprint CS says I am eligible for the $199 price, but I called Best Buy and they checked and said I am not eligible until Oct.
Guess I will have to wait until June 4rth and order through Sprint. Wonder why Sprint says I am, but Best Buy shows I am not.
Well bestbuy was the way to go but now they have made some changes like making you wait two weeks for a new phone when yours is broke even when you have insurance all its good for is an extra battery

I don't even know if I'm allowed to post this here...
But my name is Kyle, I'm the store manager of a RadioShack in Bellmead, Texas. You can preorder the EVO from RadioShack for a $50 down payment, we give you a gift card with the $50 on it you can use towards the price of the phone, and the company is throwing in $20 for accessories you can use at the time of purchase. Our inventory is being determined by the preorders we sell, so we are guaranteed to have at least that many phones in stock on June 4th.
I have personally had the opportunity to use this phone as part of inter-company training, and let me tell you: every rumor you've ever heard about this phone being fast as all hell is absolutely true. This thing is a beast. I've already pre-ordered mine, and anyone in the area is welcome to stop in the store. I'm not allowed to show anyone or demo the real deal before launch date, but I do have a dummy model that I'll be happy to show, so you can see how the real phone feels prior to launch.
Any questions, PM me. I'll be happy to share any info I got.

yeah dont trust those bestbuy/compusa/circuit city insurance unless its clearly written that its covered if x event happens.
I had a laptop to which the hinges cracked it was supposed to be covered under the protection plan... but they said those cracks were "cosmetic" and refused to honor. yup. A screen detaching from a laptop can be called "cosmetic" as long as it still powers on. >_<
(Won class action lawsuit / settlement against toshiba)
But i will never trust those extra coverage from big chain stores.

I just posted in your other thread about my RS experience today.
The employee at my local store told me that all the Radio Shacks in the Austin area are completely sold out of gift cards due to the EVO pre-orders! He's not positive if there will be any more by the 4th.
EDIT: I guess I could always drive up to Bellmead and order from you. It's only a little over 100 miles from Austin!

I just canceled my Best Buy preorder when they told me that they would not price match Sprint if they marked the price up.
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
When I called them they said they didn't know and normally don't know anything till the day before.
They were pretty much useless to me. Sprint has already announced the price so the chances are pretty slim they will just all the sudden increase the price.
My Sprint store would not let me pre-order. They said they would be happy to call me when the EVO arrives.
EDIT: Best Buy sold me a $ 50 gift card to use for the purchase of the phone or anything else in the store (or cashed in). In my opinion this is a no lose situation. If Best Buy decides to up the price (which I HIGHLY doubt) then I can just cash in the card and walk over to the Sprint store.
I also just looked at the Best Buy site online and the fine print keeps deferring back to the Sprint website for more details. To me this means the price will be the same, $450 unsubsidized - $150 upgrade - $100 mail-in rebate = $200.
EDIT-2: It's looking more and more like TheBiles is correct. More than one person has reported that BB is going to charge $600.

There has been a lot of talk that Best Buy will charge $600 off contract, which is what I'm ordering. They've done the price gouging in the past as well. Does anyone know the off contract price at Radio Shack?
EDIT: Apparently Radio Shack is only accepting preorders for contracted phones. They told me that they don't yet know what the final price will be. The Sprint store told me to come back in a week and they would probably be taking names for reserves. Though I'm not too worried about them selling out here.

I went into a Sprint store because Best Buy in Washington state will apparently not ever carry Sprint phones in store (they said they can only carry 3 major carriers and chose AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon) - I assume this is because T-Mobile US headquarters is in Factoria, WA outside of Seattle?
The Sprint sales manager entered some info into the computer (my Name, Social Security Number, Address, current phone number) and looked like he wrote my name and some sort of confirmation number on a post-it note. He said I have one reserved for the 4th and they will call me the 3rd to schedule an appointment to pick it up after the morning rush has died down. I expressed concern because I wanted to make sure I would have an Evo if they sold out, and he said not to worry, I will definitely get one.
I'll go to a Sprint store in the morning. The dude at BB said "you do know it's gonna be around $700 right?" .. uhhhh no thanks pal..

Sprint: $450 off contract.

Yeah, my Best Buy was totally ****ing clueless. They were all like "Um, we have no idea what the price will be, but we do know that we will not match the price on it." I was like not a chance.
I work at a sprint store in WA, we are officially taking pre orders for the phone. I hear they have a ton in the warehouse, but with the magnitude of interested I'd get to it quick.

As a sprint employee, can you tell me if there's any "official" preorder process? I didn't receive a receipt or confirmation number, although the employee seemed to write something down after putting my info into the computer. I did tell him I would be signing up for a new 2yr contract as well.
There should be, I was told there was, but the link to whatever they are working on is broken thusfar. It should be up soon. What our store is doing is taking down names, numbers and emails, and then transfering them to the real pre order list once it becomes available. After that you will get an email with the pre order confirmation.
For anyone wondering if BB will raise the price, they will. Look at their off contract pricing for the Hero and Moment. $599 and $629 respectively. No doubt BB will raise the price. I need to see if Sprint will charge me a deposit to open my own account again instead of my family's account. If I can I pay my $200 etf, plus $199 and it still comes out cheaper than $450.
The reason I'm asking is because I see a lot of people pre-ordering and they say it's $199. I wanted to see if anyone was still on contract or would still be on a contract by the time the Evo comes out. I wanted to see if the people on contract were still getting the phone for $199 from BB or the shack. I know the $199 is for a $150 discount with a 2 year plan and an up-front $100 rebate.
On-contract as in "not eligible for an upgrade?" I know that RadioShack is not taking pre-orders for full retail purchases, and Best Buy is gouging the price to $600 for those not on contract. I'm going to pre-order from Sprint when they start accepting in-store (some places actually already have).

I wonder what would be the price if I tell BB that I'm contract now but I want to renew (restart my 2yr contract). Would they just take $100 off the retail price? Guess I have to go in to BB sometime tomorrow to see how this all works. Maybe I'll try the shack as well.
Can they really inflate the price that high when retail (According to sprint) is suppose to be $450? I guess Sprint will have to take my money then and I'll have to wait 10-14 weeks for a rebate.

The $100 rebate is only for new contracts and people with their 22-month full upgrade. The 12-month (non-premier) upgrade is just $75 off retail.
And yes, Best Buy can gouge all they want to.
Under Contract with TMO
I'm under contract with T-Mobile but with still 5 months left. Going to terminate the contract (only $100). Rather cough up the money than continue to use my G1 for the next five months. I want the Evo NOW.
Same here. I'm upgrading from my hero (which I got in December ) so I think your better seeing the device in a sprint store then buying it full out.
im dropping my plan to the lowest ($20/mo.) on vzw and already preordered from radio shack

Adding another line is considered a new activation therefore you would get the phone for $199.
Where is everyone getting this 600$ quote from. At my BB the guy said he "thinks its like 600" which means that he was going off the rumoured off contract price.I don't see BB raising the price of a phone higher than it's MSRP.

Oh you don't? Go to Best Buy and try to buy a Hero or a Moment off contract and enjoy paying $600 or $630, respectively!
I preordered as a current customer without an upgrade available for my phone number. I just upgraded another line on my account, and will swap hardware after I have the phone in my hand.
could somebody help me figure this out a bit?
i have the HTC Hero, bought and signed with a new 2 year contract in november 2009.
so is there any way i could get the $199 price on the evo? i think you can get the EVO but you have to sign another 2 year contract even though i'm only 6 months in?

No. You are stuck paying the full price. I am a smart one though. I had a Sprint account back in the day, left with good standing. I ran into credit issues and about a year back had to pay a deposit so I just went on my father's plan with my fiancee instead. Well, I just got my Hero in October, 2 yr contract. Called up Sprint. They told me to get the Evo in my name, new account with a new phone number. Then afterward, get my dad and transfer my Hero line into my account. I get the 2 yr new activation price for the Evo, I keep my number and I don't have to pay the ETF. Life is f-ing sweet!

Yes but I don't pay for those lines. The owner's of the lines do. I will now be on my own plan, by myself with no ties to them. This isn't the solution for everyone but I figured maybe if someone is in the same situation it may help them.
Radio Shack would not let me upgrade, because I am not eligible until June 1st for upgrade. I just went over to Best Buy and signed right up.
Also, the rep at Radio Shack was not clear as to whether or not I would get the phone on Launch day or not. The Best Buy mobile manager told me for sure that I would get it then. I wanted to try Radio Shack first, simply because of the $20 of free accessories, but hey, you win some, you lose some.
then again, in the case of the Evo, I think we all win
It's like they timed this specifically for Palm Pre Premier owners... Friggin awesome.

If you go through sprint, you'll probably have to renew your 2 yr contract so that it starts up at June 4th, or whenever you get the EVO. You won't get the $150 upgrade discount, but you'll get the $100 mail-in-rebate though.
I believe this is what you'll go through because this is what I'm thinking will happen for me. I too bought the Hero in Nov. 09. But in the past when renewing a contract, Sprint has always just restarted my contracts when I wanted a new contract.
Do to the retail cost that BB and the shack might, I'm going to go through sprint, but not the sprint store. If you go through the sprint store, you'll have to pay the $36 activation fee. Most of the phones that you buy online through Sprint, don't charge an activation fee, so I'm thinking (hoping) this will be through for the EVO when they start selling them online.
I'm still on contract and pre-ordered with best buy, was quoted $199
Much easier to throw this all in one spot than to try to compile all the various threads. New info as of 5/27/10!
-Preorders are no longer being taken at Radioshack due to inventory constraints. IE: demand was starting to exceed quantity
-The occasional store (non-mall stores) is opening at 6am; check your local area to find out which are opening early and at what times.
-Activation will most likely not be a simple in-out process. Expect to be in the store roughly 30 minutes.
-Don't forget the phone requires a Data plan and a $10 Premium Data service in order to be activated! Sprint's Hotspot add-on is discounted to $29.99 as well.
-Most stores should have the device in-store in advance of the release date, so our worries about stock are allieved. Even if a store is out of stock, we will most likely not be able to call another store and have a phone placed on hold due to demand, BUT it may be able to be Direct2U'd, which is a method of ordering.
-Accessories at launch will be limited to chargers (generic and iGo), screen protectors, and some locations will have Zagg's Screen Protector (not full body). Evo-specific accessories will be available throughout the month of June.
-Pre-order customers will be offered 15% off accessories from 6am to whenever the store would normally open (usually 9am), and everyone else will be offered 10% from 9am through normal business hours. This stacks with the $20 credit (though neither are available on the phone itself, even though the credit can be used on anything else in the store) and is only available through close-of-business June 4th.
-Radioshack Service Plans on the HTC Evo will be lowered from $124.99 to 99.99 through June 6th, and covers everything it always has, namely:
+Wear and Tear
+Light Corrosion
+Speaker Damage
+Screen Outages
+Dead Pixels
+Battery Replacement once per year (excellent value)
+In-Store Replacement of up to four same-ticket accessories
Just keep in mind this is a warranty, not insurance. As such, it does not cover lost, stolen, broken, or water damage claims.
Luckily, none of this is classified information, so I can share it freely with all of you Ask any question you feel necessary, and I'll keep this updated if anything changes~
I also wouldn't be surprised if Sprint has server issues as well (on launch day/morning), just to really slow things down. It will make it more,.... lets just say memorable.

The $50 gift card is for the preorder itself. Instead of keeping your money like GameSTOP, for example, we give you a gift card so that we still have a guarantee you'll come back. Same principle, different execution. The $50 you can use toward the phone, while the $20 can only be used on accessories.

The insurance does have its place, that doesn't mean it's a bad idea. If you have a history of having phones go bad, it's a cheaper alternative. If you're worried about it being stolen or lost, or dropping it in water.... honestly you should probably get a different phone XD But really, insurance is good for those things, provided you don't mind paying $168 over the course of your plan, plus the $100 deductible.
The downside to the RS plan is that it's a send-off to repair (except for the accessory and battery replacement), so if you don't have a back-up phone, it might not be the best for you since we don't use loaners. So there you go, a direct comparison. Both are good, in different circumstances. I've seen the warranty do wonders for lots of customers, and I've seen it be worthless.
I just called the RS I pre-ordered at and was told:
1. They have stopped taking pre-orders since the close of business day yesterday (May 27th). He also said that most stores were limited to 20 pre-orders.
2. They are opening at 6:00AM sharp (this is a full store, not a kiosk) and stock may be limited to 2-4 phones more than pre-ordered!
3. He was not sure about the $10 or $15 discount for accessories (DUBious, who is a Houston, TX Radio Shack employee, has reported an additional 10% off accessories for people arriving between 6-9AM).
I noticed that the tone of the employee I talked to was much more serious today than my previous calls (yes, I bug them a lot! ). Maybe the scope of how big this is going to be is starting to dawn on some of them now that news is coming down from corporate?
Saw this over at SD. Costco in store and online is offering the G2 for $99 ($150 - 50 rebate) for contract upgrades/renewals as well as new contracts. Comes with an accessory pack (mostly junk but does have a car charger). You can keep your old data plan, from the thread it sounds like it must be a smart phone data plan or you have to get the $30 data plan.

yeah this is a good deal i work at costco they might tell you you have to change your data plan but just call customer service to change it back after jump on this great offer
I was going to wait until the phone was rooted, but this price is too good to pass up since I'll be a contract extension.
Does anyone know if there's a 14-day return period when you buy online, or if Costco's normal 90-day return period applies? When I spoke to the phone kiosk representative in my local Costco, he said it would be 14 days. But at the Costco wireless website, the FAQ says 90-days.

from what I understand both are in place. You can return the contract extension for 14days, you can return the phone for a refund for 90days. 90 day refund is great if you have an issue with the phone and want to swap it out for a new one.

OK, thanks, that makes sense. Maybe the Kiosk guy didn't understand what I was asking. I tried to place an order online, but they want me to call customer service ("more info needed"), so I'll try going in to my local store tomorrow.

Definitely returning my G2 to crap shack and going and picking this up at Costco today!
Does anyone know what it costs out-of-contract? Is it still discounted at all?

Retail Price $449.99

Yep, I believe this is what I was looking for. Originally I was going to wait for the G2 to go BoGo at t-mobile before switching but with this deal I think I'm gonna be there Saturday. Costco Membership just saved me more money!
I'll call customer service tomorrow and tell them I am thinking about returning my G2 and going to Costco to upgrade and see if Tmo will price match costco.
One of my buddies called me tonite, asked about how good the g2 is and he was sold.
He was ready to buy it at Tmob store at 200, I told him about this deal and walmart.
He took off from Tmob and went to Costco and got it asap, Thx to OP and slickdeals!
Just picked this up at the Costco at Pentagon City, VA. Price was 125 after tax (or rather 175, since I haven't sent the $50 rebate in yet). Really the best deal out there for upgraders. I'm glad I waited. Thanks to the op!

A while back others have tried that with the vibrant and tmob tells them they will lose their upgrade status if they return it. When costco pulls up your info, the system will show you're not upgradable.
However, if you didnt buy it yet and ask tmob to price match they wont, they will tell you to go ahead and buy it at costco.

Considering that you got the phone for a steep subsidy discount, what does "returning it for a refund" mean here?
You get your $99 back, but then a new phone will cost you full price because you already used your upgrade?
They can switch you to another phone they sell, 1 for 1, for the difference of the subsidized upgrade price? (But only if you do it through them?)
They will refund $449 (their full price for the phone) since they already get their $350 from T-Mobile?
What gets refunded, and what happens to your upgrade status?
Stupid question:
do you have to be a costco member for this deal?
I purchased the phone through a t-mo store and was eligible for an upgrade price. Then I saw this post regarding a cheaper price @ costco. I immediately returned the phone after having it for 3 days. Went to costco and tried purchasing it there and was suprised to find out that I was no longer eligible for the upgrade. I called t-mo rep (Shad) and was informed that I can no longer purchase the phone at a discounted price since I went through the purchase the first time. I tried debating with him as to why I am no longer eligible since I returned the phone and didn't get my full refund if this was the case? I understand not being refunded for the $18.00 upgrade fee for their cost and all but if I lose my eligibility then that is not fair. I challenged him to send me in black & white this rule of theirs and he wouldn't comply. I hung up and called corporate office and was directed to customer loyalty department and explained the issue to Wency and everything went thru perfectly. All she did was price match what costco had and will be shipping it out.
Sorry for the long story (I hope I don't get flamed for this). Just an advice for those who purchased the phone and wanting to return it and call corporate so you bypass the BS you will be going thru like I did.

Yes you have to be a costco member or if you know someone who is.
How long is this going on for??
A friend of mine and myself got into a bit of a disagreement last night over bestbuy etfs. Long story short he got a phone from bb cancelled the service and kept the phone. Will bb come after him with a etf?
I know sprint didn't charge him a etf but will bb come after him for a etf! I made a $75 bet with him that bb would come after him with a seperate etf. But he showed me his receipt/contract paperwork and other than the info about sprint etf, there's NOTHING that states anything about bb etfs. And he paid with cash so its not like bb can just charge his credit card. I searched google and everything and really didnt find any info on this. I know companies like wirefly, letstalk etc charge their own etf if you cancel service and don't return the device. Which they even indicate when you go through their application process and is also indicated in their paperwork.
So my question is, am I out of $75? Did I just lose this bet against this fool...lol? If someone have any insight into this, it'll help me out a lot. I'd love to show him some post that bb is going to come after him. So let me know what you all think.

I believe you lost yourself 75 bucks .... as far as I can remember when you purchase an item from a store that authorized to sale the item you are only under contract with the item provider.
Bestbuy typically give you instant rebates at the register because they send their rebates directly to the manufacturers and not the provider. Hence it is no lost to them only the provider who takes the hit

Wow..are you serious. I kinda thought that I may lose the bet because there was nothing mentioned in the paperwork about a bb etf and if it was I didn't find it. I thought bb was just like wirefly and letstalk.com when it comes to cancelling service. But like I said sprint cancelled the service with no questions asked. Oh well...if I lose, I'll pay up...lol.

from my knowledge you don't sign a contract with BB, just sprint
Are you your friend's personal accountant or money manager? I mean even if he gets an ETF all he has to do is say he didn't and collect your money lol

Sorry dude but as an employee of bb mobile I can tell you that you just lost $75. An etf is strictly through the carrier. After the contract is signed we have no part in it.

ETF
If anything he will get a Sprint etf. It wont show up for a month or 2 as was the case when I switched From At&t. Best buy is in the cell phone business, not the carrier business which subsidizes the cost of the phone so they cannot charge an etf
Clarify the bet with him because I'm sure Sprint didn't give him a hassle about canceling but he will get a separate bill from Sprint for the remainder of his contract. Around $200 for early cancellation.
You said he paid cash. did he pay the whole amount or contract price, and did he cancel in the first 30 days? Not sure if BB does does the same but the store I got mine from told me if I canceled without returning the phone they would charge me an additional $250 for it.

Not sure how Best Buy works, but I know that where I work, if you sign a contract and cancel, and DON'T bring the phone back to us, we charge a portion of the total cost.. I can't remember the amount, but that's how we do it..
Well what he did was call sprint and cancelled the service. Sprint didn't hassle him because he's well within his 30 days so they cancelled it with no questions asked. They said that he wouldn't be charge any SPRINT etf. However, he will have to pay for what he used prior to cancelling the service.
I am over his house watching the football game right now and had a chance to look at the paperwork again. And I just don't see anything that indicates a bb etf. Everything I see is in regards to sprint etf, that's it. I just thought that bb is like wirefly and letstalk. That is you have to return the device within a certain time frame if you cancel service or you'll be charged their etf. But I'm starting to think that's not the case.
Plus when I bought the Nexus S and tried to cancel my service with T-mobile, I tried to cancel my service like 3 days after I got the phone and I had to go to bb so that they can give tmobile some code that informs them that I returned the device. Sprint doesn't have a system like that. Which I know because I bought an Epic from Radioshack like 2 months ago and I returned it like 2 weeks later. However, before I took it back to radioshack, I called sprint to cancel the line that the Epic was on and they cancelled it with no questions asked again. Radioshack gave me my money back and I went to Sprint and bought me a brand new Evo for full price, I believe $500.
Oh well, I'll be paying $75 this Friday. thanks everyone for all your responses.

He paid contract price. But even if they told him about a possible bb etf if he were to cancel service and not return the device, its not indicated anywhere in the paperwork. They gave him copies of everything he signed and and not one indicates a bb etf.

This is an interesting scenario, especially if the device was paid for by cash.
Although the receipt has his sprint info, I don't think BB can go after sprint to collect anything, as they are an authorized third party seller in this case.
Now, there is this clause on the receipt under SERVICE AND SERVICE OPTIONS
....Thank you for purchasing your sprint phone and service at Best Buy. If you wish to change or cancel your Service please return with your phone to a best buy store.
As stated previously, BB is not in the carrier business, they are merely a third party reseller of sprint products. Also, nowhere on the receipt is anything else stipulated regarding cancellation of service and potential fees that may be charged [by best buy].
So, this may very well fall through the cracks.
Btw, some other resellers such as amazon and wirefly do have clauses that say if you cancel service within 180 days, you will be charged additional etf's outside of what the carrier may charge you.
ymmv.

I believe Sprint will send a bill, and if he does not pay they will lock the ESN.
I can't speak for Best Buy since I've never worked there but I know Radioshack (and CompUSA before they went out of business) charge their own etfs if the service was cancelled within 90 days without the device being returned. At CompUSA you would get a separate paper contract about this additional etf. At Radioshack you get an electronic contract that shows up on the Verifone credit card device that requires the customer to read and sign that mentions this separate etf. I'm not sure if this is also mentioned on the receipt or not, I've never actually read it.

This is something Sprint has recently changed. Anytime a new account (within 30 days) is going to cancelled, the phone must be returned to the original point of purchase, meaning if he purchased it at BB, Sprint will not cancel the service, Best Buy has to contact NSS and have them process the 30-day cancellation. In your particular instance, if someone at Sprint cancelled them, he got lucky. In normal instances, your friend would not be allowed to cancel over the phone, meaning if he kept the phone past 30 days he'd be under contract with Sprint and then your friend would be charged $200 ETF if he chose to cancel or keep receiving Sprint bills until his account was disconnected and sent to collections.
Your friend, was really lucky to have spoken with a new hire that mistakingly cancelled the account (or line).
