Android 2.2 / Froyo to bring Bluetooth voice dialing - Hero CDMA General

We obviously have plenty of Froyo features to do deep dives on in the coming days and weeks, but there's one new feature that we want to point out that has us particularly excited: voice dialing with Bluetooth headsets. Android Central reader Luke tipped us off to take a closer look at Google's Android 2.2 rundown and right there, plain as day, they drop the bluetooth bomb:
Voice dialing over Bluetooth
Ability to share contacts with other phones
Support for Bluetooth enabled car and desk docks
Improved compatibility matrix with car kits and headsets
All of the above is quite nice, but given that Android is miles ahead of other mobile platform when it comes to robust voice support, it's good to see them finally check that box off.

My G1 works with my bluetooth enabled car stereo

I was excited when this happened so I thought I would share. So I just bought a pioneer avic f900bt in dash nav av stereo for my car from circuit city on the last day the store was open. I got super lucky, got the stereo for 200$ which is 80% less than retail price. It has bluetooth capabilities for phone integration. I paired my G1 with it and it automatically downloaded my contact list from my phone onto the stereo. i can make calls by selecting a contact on my stereo and it does it's thing. My question is, the g1 is based off the android os and the stereo is a WinCE os, how come the G1 can't sync with other windows programs like outlook? this would be sweet. ohwell the phone is freaking sweet anyways. would totally buy one for the wife but they need more medical programs available for it as she is a Dr. and needs all that stuff on her pda phone.
thats awesome news. I was wondering about this, as I am about to purchase a BT stereo for my car.
the avic f900bt just got the latest firmware update for its bluetooth. It even recognized the phone as a TMobile G1. Not sure what other brands of stereo have same capabilities.

This is because Bluetooth does not care what OS is running but what Bluetooth profiles are on the systems. Handsfree profile allows for speakerphone, A2DP profile allows you to stream your music to another device in stereo, and so on. For communication with Outlook it would need the PIM profile installed.
As of now the G1 only has Handfree profiles installed. Hopefully Cupcake will introduce us to more (A2DP is listed as one.)

It looks like we are slowing unlocking the hidden potential of the phone.
The day of the online press release before the launch they said that tethering wouldn't be supported and we've come a long way with that. I was very close to not getting the phone because I NEED tethering support. Now it's easier with this phone then it is with my WinMobile phones. It's only a matter of time until someone figures out how to do the "impossible" again. Wouldn't it be neat if you had stereo blue tooth to your car stereo all coming from a 32gb sd card? My guess is that we'll figure out it before it comes out on an update. Come on geeks... put on your thinking caps!
Go ahead and buy her the G1. I am a doctor. between wikipedia and google.
there isn't much info left in those ancient PDA programs.
For drugs she can just go to medscape.com
The only people left using the old pda programs are students who get cappy old palms for free from their schools.
thanks for the info ratsoda. I will show my wife and see if that would work for her. Then all we have to do is wait for her phone to be ready for full upgrade. I think it will be in may. my only worry is that she drops her current phone atleast once a week. drives me crazy as I have never dropped any of my phones. maybe being a techy makes me sensitive to stuff like that.

Man, isn't that something. I have the same problem. Wife and children drop their phone at least once a week. I would probably hurt my self trying to keep mine from hitting the ground.
Can you imagine dropping the G1..it looks like it will fly apart with only a moderate drop. One lick, upper left corner and "bam", you have a detached keyboard.
My greatest fear for my G1
And by the way....if you are still shopping for a "wifey" phone, let me suggest blackberry. That's what I got for mine. Pretty phone, does all she will ever need, and is sturdy as hell. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin', so to speak

Bluetooth Voice Dialing for the Android OS

Does anyone know if there will be any progress getting bluetooth headsets to voice dial with the Android OS? From what I've seen, Google has been very lax in pushing forward with this much needed capability. They have not even added it in version 2.1.
Is there any way that a workaround can be implemented? I have been holding off getting an Android phone for this very reason.
I apologize if this topic has been posted elsewhere.

Idk
The Verizon Devour and the Canadian Droid on Telus, called the Milestone, have Bluetooth initiated voice dialing by a company called Nuance. The built-in Android/Google voice recognition has had it's BTVD disabled because it only doesn't perform well with a Bluetooth headset but is apparently adequate with the phones mic. I wish someone would use the ROMs from those phones to add this feature to the Droid or Incredible but so far no one has. It'd even be cool to see if someone could compile a ROM for Android that flips the switch in the code just so people can try it out. Or better yet, fix whatever problem there is with the quality of Bluetooth voice so that the built-in Android voice recognition could handle it. Man, I want to get rid of my Devour but I can't until I can safely use these killer phones in my car.

This whole issue is like deja vu for those of us that were old-timers with Windows Mobile, which also didn't support VD via the BT headset. And ironically, the excuse given by Microsoft was exactly the same: that voice quality wasn't good enough for voice recognition when using a BT headset. However, MS somehow managed to magically solve this -- voice dial via BT is now supported in WM and works great.
So I have to think that Google's bright engineers could do the same thing if it became a priority. It's obviously not, and won't be unless users really start complaining loudly enough. That's exactly what it took to get action from MS, too.

Help - Bluetooth and Voice Dialling

As it says.
I have an HCB 150 BT car kit which has workred well with other SE phones and it imported/used the phones phone book and allowed BT voice dialling Safe and legal.
X10 connects easily and reliably but no phonebook available (is this PBAP?) Thinks bum! but OK I can live with that as voice dialling is available. Er. apparantly not
Can't believe that a flagship phone can't do these things even worse the documentation does not make these issues clear.
I really like the phone BUT had I known this I would have waited.
I hope (really really really) that it will be the subject of an update.
Leaving BT aside has anyone got the voive dialler to work? I can't. It does not seem to be able to recognise anything.........................dimwit ding.
Oh, and battery life sucks - I know i've read the thread..........all of it.
I tried it once.. and failed.. but thought nothing of it as I wasn't really bothered to use it.. never really had a lot of success with voice dialling on any handset i've had... so I downloaded oftseen gestures which allow you to swipe a gesture to call someone.. I've used that for my main numbers..
No good for driving though................................................
What about that phone book access...........can you help?
Voice dialing using a bluetooth device is not supported by Android 1.6. I don't know whether 2.1 does, but it is one of the major drawbacks of Android devices.
Tons of complains about this feature that Google somehow failed to do. This is specially bad in places where it is illegal to hold a phone while driving.
Edit: Did a search. Apparently, 2.1 does not support bluetooth dialing either. Some people found a solution by using bluetooth headsets that store the contact list in the headset.
Is that 2.1 that shifts the phonebook to the headset? Or is 1.6 supposed to be able to do it?
Help, about to crash whilst attempting to illegally dial..................
Google feels a law suit coming on.............
Bump..............
I meant that I found somewhere, someone stated that there are some bluetooth headsets that store the phone list in the headset's own memory and it is the headset itself that recognizes your voice and instructs the phone to dial. I have searched the web and can't find such a device.
I don't think you will find an answer here or anywhere. You can go to a Google hosted forum and complain over there. This issue has been around since the first Android phone, and I am like you, at a loss why Google can't write a piece of software to deal with this.
Thanks vistador. I assume that in the US hands free is mandatory whilst driving, in which case I foresee law suits against Google?Android for not providing somehting that has been readily available for years.
How do i COMPLAIN DIRECTLY TO gOOGLE?

[Q] Bluetooth SAP/rSAP on Windows Phone 7

Can anyone tell me if there is a technical reason Bluetooth SAP/rSAP cannot be delivered on the Windows Phone 7 platform, or are the just being lazy about delivering it??
So... no reply cause nobody knows or no reply cause I'm being a n00b and this is answered elsewhere? Or something worse?
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=rsap+windows+phone+7
Just follow the first link "Frage zu SAP..." (german)
So far only these BT profiles are implemented:
PBAP — Phone Book Access Profile
A2DP — Advanced Audio Distribution Profile
HSP — Headset Profile
HFP — Hands-Free Profile
AVRCP — A/V Remote Control Profile
Anything else would be speculation, because Mango BT updates known so far:

Thanks - just saw that qualified listing and was a little disappointed. I checked the one for Apple iOS (listed as software version 4.1 and 4.2) and it also doesn't mention SAP or rSAP, but I know it does support those profiles, so I'm wondering whether I am just reading it wrong.
The differences are that iOS has:
RFCOMM
Bluetooth Network Encapsulation Protocol
Personal Area Networking Profile
HID
Interop Test Spec
Which one of these is linked to SAP/rSAP?
How do you "know" that iPhone supports rSAP? It does not, not even 4.3:
http://iamtim.de/2011/05/das-iphone-und-das-sim-access-profil-sap-oder-rsap/
None of these profiles you listed is rSAP (or SAP, SIM), as written here:

Well I suppose to be clear I don't "know", I just "think". The reason I "think" is because it communicates with my car, that says it "requires" SIM Access Profile, whereas my phone REFUSES to communicate with my car.
Additional detail: the car actually supports 2 bluetooth "modes": Headphone mode and SIM Access mode. If I have the car initiate the bluetooth connection it will use the remote SIM mode, and if the phone initiates the connection it will use the "headphones" mode.
A Nokia N97 works in both directions. As does the iPhone 3 and 4. My Samsung Omnia 7 won't do either.
Maybe Mango will be a solution, because it updates the Headset and Hands-free profiles.
"New is Hand-Free Profile 1.5, which should mean better support for Bluetooth car kits. "
Also there comes PBA (Phonebook Access profile), which is basically the same as SAP, but it uses the radio of the phone, instead the radio inbuilt to the car kit.
PBA and your interpretation of it being very similar to SAP sounds quite interesting yet it will most likely not be recognized by SAP-only car-kits like the older VW premium handsfree-boxes. I for instance refrain from switching to any other OS than windows Mobile simply because i need my phone working with the car kit and i am not going to buy a new car because my phone doesnt support the current.
Well, anyhow. I was going to say, that if the PBA doesn't support some kinda fake-SAp mode (pretend to be sap or so) it will most likely not help anyone with sap-only car kits. not matter how much it is similar to sap.
sorry to say this.

While i have both versions of Windows OS and yes the 6.x suported rSAP, the new WP7 does not. If you want a new phone that supports rSAP then Android fills the bill. Microsoft really dropped the ball by not supporting rSAP. Like you, have a VW-based phone system and without rSAP support the current handsfree phone protocols in WP7 is basically worthless.
[Update]
Just updated my phone to Mango, and annoyingly neither the headphone mode or reomte SIM modes work. This is a deal-breaker for me.
While I was quite enjoying the phone I am now going to switch to a Galaxy SII which works reliably in both directions, and connects properly to my WiFi as well. A real shame, but I can't imagine another WP update will be coming too soon and I don't have any patience left.

Since update my Omnia 7 to Mango, I get a lot of "BT connection error" on my display car.
all working here.
car radio is a Kenwood.
Finally now the phone transmits the name of the song playing to the headunit! like windows mobile.
Voice comands thru the Headunit work amazing too.The other day i received an sms while driving, voice comand told me that there was a new sms from Ken,then it ask me if i wanted it read out loud! I said yes and it did, at the end it ask me if i want it to reply to.
Also this is the only phone that actually auto connects to the car stereo, all my android devices need to be reconnected manually.
Funny thing all of this was set up by just pairing the device with the headunit.
Well my "head unit" is integrated into the dash - it's a Porsche touch screen system called PCM (which I think, lamely, stands for Porsche Control Module). I have anecdotal evidence that other WP7 models will connect which makes me think it may actually be the Samsung Omnia 7 itself and not WP7 per se.
What sux is that my Samsung Galaxy S2 works perfectly and my wife's iPhone4 works perfectly. So it isn't the car.
...I really haven't got the patience to wait for the Win8 update and keep using headphones for the next year!
some news here?

Best Car Stereo for most functionality with android phone

I am in the search for the best, well best for a descent price that is probably double din card stereo with the best Android integration.
By that I mean mainly blue tooth and usb.
I know based on some of the bluetooth protocols there are quite a range of things that can be integrated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_protocol_stack)
For example pluging into USB and the deck seeing the internal memory as well as SD Card to be able to play files from it, bluetooth being able to push music to the deck as well as the deck being able to communicate with apps such as pandora to skip tracks and such from the deck.
My searches thus far have lead to me this model http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KWHR81B/JVC-KW-HDR81BT.html?showAll=N&search=KW-HDR81BT&skipvs=T
But I know there is one more bluetooth feature I would like and that is (MAP) Message Access Profile, which allows for text related messages to the deck for text to speech functions an such. (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_...tooth-do-besides-make-calls-abcs-of-car-tech/)
So anyone have ideas, I think there are new models announced close to this time of year right?
Anyone have good suggestions for a review site?

That looks very cool but my phone is not on the list plus it seems like something that is in its infancy still. I think a broader technology like bluetooth that could be compatible with many more devices may be a better way of connecting. I think that kind of thing will be awesome in a few years when they nail down a standard for communicating audio/video to the head unit, almost like the head unit is just a monitor to the phone and a touchscreen monitor at that.
I'm actually looking for the same thing right now. I don't want to spend $500+ dollars on a head unit when I could buy a nexus tablet to do everything for half that. But I do want a stand alone radio that I can use with a phone or streaming data, plus a built in amp with preamp outs would be perfect.
App Radio 2 has many issues.

I just purchased the App Radio 2, and am returning it to Crutchfield. The screen is nice looking, but otherwise it is the single most disappointing electronic device I have ever purchased. I won't go into the long list of complaints about the device, as the hatred I now have for it could destroy a small city. Suffice to say that the unit functions as designed, but was likely designed by a team of engineers who had never seen a car, radio, phone or normal human being. There are a few threads here for people who are still trying to make the device worthwhile, with a particular success in the ARLiberator App.
I'm tempted to try that out, but the reality is the radio software itself is the problem in my opinion. It would be great to use the ARLiberator phone functions, but I don't like the firmware of the radio.
I'm looking at other options and right now the Parrot Asteroid Smart is a front-runner. I'm conflicted as it has runs Android 2.3 and I was hoping for something more current. Search around on the forum for more details on both before you purchase, there are many potential show stoppers.

Get an android based double din radio, make sure its dual core, 1G Ram, DAB+ supported, 6.2-7" TFT capacitive touch screen, steering wheel controls supported and accepts WiFi dongle. you will have the mighty Google Play store to satisfy your imagination.
obviously such a unit would support most of the Bluetooth profiles.
I noticed few units on ebay but not from any known manufacturer. best i found was from some German supplier icar-tech
Alpha V800 and Alpha S600 are the ones, I haven't confirmed all the above requirements that I would wanna see in my next head unit.
Good Luck

I wanted to get in on this thread to see if anyone has actually pulled the trigger and bought something yet.
I share the same mentality -- the phone/tablet can handle most of the "smart" functions. All that's needed is rock-solid bluetooth support. If it does great USB, that's a huge bonus.
I have one of the older Pioneer stereos that first did Bluetooth. I got it around 2007. The market has matured a lot since then and I'm itching for an upgrade.

I've had a look around many different forums and stores, and I'm still at square one. I totally agree that all that's needed is rock-solid bluetooth support.
I've been into a few shops in the last few days and BT paired my GS2 running CM11 and Google Play Music with some head units....for what they can do via bluetooth, they all seem to do a decent job of it......I can skip/pause songs on either the head unti or the phone, Google Play Music on the phone updates as you switch songs on the HU.
But what it doesn't seem capable of (that I've seen or read about), which apparently iPhones can do, is change albums, browse by artist/genre, search, etc.....beyond the most basic of back/next/pause functions, unless I'm mistaken, it's just not possible when BT pairing an Android phone with any head unit on the market.
Can anyone definitively confirm that this is or is not true?
Well.... Now that android auto is in the making, maybe there will be some better offerings available for those of us looking for a good stereo!

Until then what are we supposed to do ..buy an IPhone?
I have a Google Nexus 4 and went too the effort of looking into the options. I find it utterly amazing in an Android phone you can't browse albums over bluetooth its simply a joke!
The best option would be to try to maybe get a double DIN car stereo with support some kind of screen mirroring so you can change album from the touch screen maybe something like a AVIC-F60DAB but it costs a grand would be cheaper for me to buy an IPhone!!!
I belive you need the AVRCP standard if you want the track listing to display on your headset via Bluetooth.
Even if I could get a Car Stereo to support my mobile..the big problem with the Google nexus and it seems many Android devices they don't support Bluetooth very well. There is a bug in the Nexus 4 so that when you are using bluetooth in your car stereo after a while Bluetooth will just turn off Google don't seem to care about fixing this..I don't really want to get an Apple but if means I can listen to Music via Bluetooth and get access to Google Music then why not.!!
I have a Double Din car stereo. It's the Pioneer AppRadio 3 and it works well mirroring my Nexus 5. There's an app called "AppRadio Unchained" which let's you control your phone via the touch screen of the stereo. The only downside is the lack of power on the radio which makes the scrolling not as fast as any Android phone nowadays, but the Bluetooth has been working non-stop for me.
I had to buy an HDMI dapter to make it compatible though.
I've had a look at these but they are expensive! Maybe if I get a raise I'll buy one haha!
I was hoping to get something similar, but without having to use a HDMI adapter, a completely wireless solution would be kick ass!
