Loaded 2.1 Rooted/Not any more - Hero CDMA General

Just curious how many people loaded the 2.1 Update and have now lost root. How many of you loaded a variant of the Official 2.1 and still have root?
Anyone still on 1.5?

Currently still running AOSP 1.6, but going to hop over to Darchdroid, once Drachstar has fixed a few minor issues.

I'm running Darchdroid too. It's running smooth as a baby's buttox.

I flashed Fresh 2.1.1 on Monday. It's based off the leaked Sprint 2.1. Works great. I have root.

I'm on Regaw's latest ROM. Running smooth and skippy.

Fresh 2.1 and I lost root. Es file always let me hit back to get to the root files and when I flashed 2.1 I can't do that. Not even on my cpu. I think I'm gonna run over my phone and turn it in on insurance. Free phone. And if I wait enough I could get an EVO.

It comes with root. If you lost root, you need to reflash.

Do you have superuser whitelist installed? The only way to lose root is to flash the official HTC/Sprint RUU. Es was updated in 2.1, so it may just be a difference in version. I don't believe Es will request root anyway, try downloading Root Explorer. The quickest way to check if you have root is to run a terminal emulator and type su.

Could be worse. Those 11 could have started threads *****ing and moaning as to why they don't have root and for someone to fix it now.
I only recall one thread asking about root but wasn't complaining.

UR so funny.
I took the plunge when the first leak came out after seeing ALL the posts about what if and why for's.
I stated then that I would run the RUU and then try to root.
I tried three (3) ways and it didn't work.
I posted the results HUGE and big for those asking why and when.
I took one for the TEAM so to speak and am willing to wait for a new root without crying about it.
Push comes to shove I buy a new phone if I need it that bad.
So the number of 11 doesn't really seem all that out of line as others did in fact run the RUU before anyone made an effort to actually attempt it and have verifiable results.

Okay this is hard for some people to understand but if you got two phones all to yourself and you don't care what happens to one. It would be of great benefit to the community if you leave one unrooted so when someone needs a beta tester to test whether or not a new root procedure works I'm here to help them beta test the procedure. Plus I wanted to test a couple things out that could only be done if I flashed the 2.1 ruu not to be confused with rom.

We Need to Port the Desire ROM (once rooted)

I hope that once we have this rooted, we will be able to flash the Desire ROM. I'm sick at my stomach knowing that we are missing the wonderful News (RSS) widget and even a few others.
The desire is not a CDMA phone.
Make more sense to just port the app you want and much more realistic.
sure. if someone can port a widget.
Could you modify the ROM to work with the Qualcomm CDMA processor?
If you root it you won't be able to get the FROYO 2.2 upgrade. Can't be installed on rooted phones.

If we had root, and if we could write to /system/, then we could push the widget to the phone and be done with it. It should not require a whole ROM port to accomplish. We already have the file (com.htc.NewsReaderWidget.apk), however we cannot install/push it to the phone.

A rooted phone might be locked out from an *official* update to 2.2, but the community would have that sorted out in a matter of hours once there was an official update to build off of. Anyways, until we do get root, that discussion is pretty much moot.
Thank you! Can't wait.

If there's an apk floating around, why couldn't it just be installed?
Also, rooted phones can run 2.2, I have no idea where you're getting that from.

Because you cannot install some .apk without permission to write to /system/app/ which we do not have. Want to try? It's attached. You will get "Application not installed" and if you try to adb push it, well, where are you going to put it? You cannot write to /system/app/ and you cannot write to /data/app/, so if you know another way...

Of course they can run it. First of all, it was another poster who said they could not -- and they didn't even really say they couldn't 'run' it, just said unambiguously that they couldn't install it -- which in hindsight was probably referring to the same manual update engadget discusses, linked below. Second, my suggestion that the upgrade *might* not be *officially* supported on a rooted phone was just a logical possibility in my mind when I said it, but may have actually turned out to be the case:

Once The Samsung Epic Comes out. if i use the one click root how would i be able to use free wifi tether and apps 2 sd? I would like to use those b4 the 2.2 update comes out? Also Do i have to unroot to install the stock 2.2 update when it comes out.

As far as updating to 2.2 you should probably wait til one of the devs releases a version of 2.2 that maintains root. If u update to stock 2.2 you may not be able to root without going backwards.
Apps2sd usually gets baked into a ROM and enabled that way and the wifi tether app should work. WHo knows, we may need a modified kernel to get it going
Samsung should release their source code for the Epic 4G once it launches.
We already have the source codes for the Vibrant and Captivate.
My guess - and its just that a guess - is that one click root is already patched in the Epic. We will have to figure out our own root method.

Maybe, maybe not. It could go either way and work, or not work. Regardless, it probably won't take long to find the root path. I'm content using stock for a few days if need be.

Sprint is pretty quick about patching root exploits - quicker than fixing broken software. Look at the EVO - just a few days after release they had an "SDCard fix" that patched root that was found before release. Given not well, because they didn't update HBoot, but still.
It shouldn't take long for us to find a method of root - max its taken so far is like 6 months on the incredible. But I strongly doubt current methods will work, they have had way to much time to be able to fix them.
The good part here is that we don't have to deal with a locked boot loader like Motorola. Those guys have had root since week 1 and still can't load roms. So once we get root, its all gravy.

as far as rooting and recieving the update, yes. The cool thing about clockwork recovery on the SGS is it does not fully flash a Recovery, it only boots into clockwork when you want to install something. So basically everytime you flash etc. you need to reboot into clockwork recovery. When rebooted it goes right back to the old recovery still allowing for ota updates.
I will be trying the 1 click as soon as I get my Epic in... PreOrder is in now. I will let you know as soon as I get it if it's working.

There is an even easier method if you haven't already rooted and you are still on 2.1. It is called "UniversalAndroot" and I used it when I was on 2.1. It is so easy. No computer necessary. Just download the .apk to your phone and then install and run it. It is just an app. You can choose...
Temporary root until reset.
Root.
Unroot.
I can't remember the exact wording of the above- but it it very easy. I was a little nervous- so I did the temporary for a day. Rooted and reset a couple of times without any problems. So then I just went ahead and rooted.
Here is a link to the file in my public dropbox folder...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7782384/UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta.apk
I encourage you to go ahead and google for information- I am sure you will be able to find the forum that I originally found the information on. I can't find it now.
Hope that helps.
Thanks, I would just like to know why the phone gets so warm/hot when its rooted and when I unrooted it it got cool again. Whatever it was it had to have drained the battery. Now I'm thinking of going to 2.2 ota upgrade. Would you guys recommend this or stay on 2.1?

I have heart A LOT of people complaining about bugs in 2.2. I personally couldn't stand it - 2.2 was out there. And I had to have it. So I am on 2.2. If you do jump to 2.2 ota - do your research. I am not sure if you can keep root with ota. I heard talk about moving "su" from "system/bin" to "system/xbin" and being able to keep root - but I am completely new to android - so I am not sure if that is true.
If you do loose root - UniversalAndroot does not work on 2.2 (unless there has been an update). There are a couple of other methods. This one looks the easiest - but was not available when I rooted - so I cannot say...
http://alldroid.org/Default.aspx?tabid=40&g=posts&t=967&find=unread
This is another method. I used this one. It is not as easy - but it is not that hard. Here is the link for the method I used...

I've already tried every method on 2.3, Z4root doesn't work, Vision root doesn't work, Gingerbreak doesn't work, hence why you can still root it by going back to 2.2 RUU. For now, this will get most people rooted. not sure about the errors some people are getting yet.

Hi!
Well, I made some post with the info that good people make available and that I collect to try to make it easy,in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211799
I already made the update since 2 days ago and very happy, in my case I found very usefull that at leats by now some usefull 2.2 tricks are very welcome like move some apps to sdcard and few other, but as new detail in my case the 2.2 update is detecting one of my 2 batteries as non original moto, and refuse to charge it, but in 2.1 it works perfect and could be charged...
So, for me is stable and hope that could be better the final release (if it may really happen, since Moto put down the page about the release.... :-/ so could be lucky that at least we have this beta, for possible future roms)
Best regards!
Froyo runs faster and it has a great file explorer built in. The only thing that sucks is that there is even more bloatware from AT&T
I have the phone unlocked and in Canada so my unlock stayed and unknown sources is still available after the upgrade
hope there are some edits soon they get rid of all the bloatware, there are legitimately 12 bloatware apps from AT&T on the phone now.
The interface is a little bit sleeker and the boot up of the phone is now silent, which i love since the old boot up was a bit to loud.
xaser, your guide is what I followed to do mine and I really apprecite your time to put it up. Worked great.
Somebody said the full update is up on moto, anybody got a link? I couldn't find anything.
No I have not tried an older version.
Anybody had any luck with a root on the beta? Or the full version either one?
Are we sure this "beta" isn't the full version? The Android Version in About Phone just says 2.2.2 instead of 2.2.2b like i'd expect with a beta.

I didn't need to reflash, I used RSD to downgrade. Since I had my phone rooted. then I just ran the official upgrade and it's been running like butter for me, real smooth.
I've searched all over for info on rooting froyo on the Flipside and it looks like it's going to take awhile because they locked the phone down tight and the few guys that have rooted the phone have started experiencing problems with the phone because of the root.
