Seems like it's time to choose an unoffcial ROM. Suggestions are welcome folks.
Unfortunately HTC also told us that the Magic won’t be getting an Android 2.1 update.

And...what about 2.0??
That is inconsistent with the official statements from Rogers, the Canadian phone company: http://androidforums.com/rogers/33450-rogers-magic-get-senseui-2-1-dream-only-gets-sense-ui.html

I am sure that it will, given that various Rogers spoke persons (including RogersMary) have promised this upgrade. Also HTC did say so too: http://androidforums.com/rogers/10647-rogers-dream-1-6-update-23.html#post235970
The only caveat is that it will most likely come with another perfected SPL. As shown with the latest Sense upgrade, it seems no developers are willing to spend time trying to find a way to root the phone once it has the official rom. I advice anyone who has a rooted phone not to upgrade to any future official rom, but wait until a chef provides a rooted version.

We will get 2.1 + Sense UI. If we don't Canadians will probably have an outrage for being lied to again.
This is hear-say, but after visiting the local TMO Store last night, the HTC Rep had come in and said there was going to be an Eclair update for coming at the end of Feb. This was said to be a 2.0 OTA Update and no mentioning of 2.1.
Personally I don't believe that site. Why would htc abandon a product they launched 6 months ago? They kept updating the G1 for over a year.
We know for sure the Hero will get 2.1 (HTC tweeted it today)
http://twitter.com/htc/status/9197263393
They haven't tweeted about the Magic but other news sources have indicated the Magic will receive 2.x in Q2 this year.
If we don't get an official release (which I think is unlikely) then I bet we could use bits from the official rom to improve the existing AOSP roms, since the hardware is so similar.
Lets not get too upset and all go and buy nexus ones just yet ...
Maybe they are talking about the US 32B version of the Magic? Rogers 32A version has almost twice the memory as the 32B.

50% more actually not double.
Again, like I was saying HTC themselves promised Android 2.1 + Sense UI for the Rogers HTC Magic.
At least from that you can expect everyone else with a 32A device to be able to use a cooked ROM based on that official RUU.

hehehe ... was that a serious comment?
Sounds good to me. Time to call retentions and see whats up cause I only extended my phone on the promise of 2.1. If it isn't coming time to get them to cancel my account.
Ah, OK, so it makes sense now. Seems like Rogers 32A will get the update and all the rest with Vodafone 32B will have to start thinking about N1 if we want 2.1....
So sad...
Well not really, when the 32A gets the official update we'll be able to port those builds to the 32B, as they are the same inside apart from the RAM differences. The drivers we need to get eclair running nicely will be in those builds so we have nothing to worry about. The best roms are always on XDA anyway, rather than from the network providers.
Anyway besides all that I still think we'll get an official update for the 32B Magic.
There were a lot of stories at the beginning of this year about the Magic getting Eclair.

I fail to see why HTC would make this for Rogers, and not release it to their own customers.

I was at a T-Mobile store today. The rep says 2.1 will be released by the end of the month for myTouch 1.2, not sure about original myTouch.

I just finished reading that and saw this.
Here is my question: Is this ROM Android 2.0/1, or is this just a new look/options for 1.6?
Its 2.1 but international magic didnt get any update :' (
Dont worry... When T-Mobile released android 1.6 for MT 3G it was ported to HTC Magic 32a VERY fast..
And the ported versions even run better on 32a.... Just go ahead and try Amon_Ra's 1.6.3 rom for 32a Magics....
I'm very sure 2.1 Epresso will be poted to 32a too...
Tmonews, Tech(something?) and androidandme have posted this "story" now.
My guess is its actually TURE?
is this for both the original mt3g and mt3g 1.2, or just 1.2?

ding ding if i had a million dollars you would win it lol. cant wait for it!!
I would be very surprised if the original myTouch (aka 32B) got SenseUI, since XDA devs have been trying for over a year to get it to run well with not enough ram ... stock roms do not use swap or compcache so if this is true then they must have something very clever up their sleve. If it is true I will definitely give it a go, SenseUI is great but so far every "Hero" rom I have tried has not had working bluetooth.

I would love to know exactly what timeframe he had in mind when hhe refered to it a "soon". That is a very relative term, and not knowing what he was thinking in relation too coud leave this anywhere from hours to years... :hs:
I'd like to at least try this out when it comes, but will it be easy to re-root and install CFW again after the update? They wouldn't try to block hacking with this update (like they do with iphone updates), right?

I would bet that they would try to prevent you from rooting after the update, but that's just me. I can't wait for this, though as someone mentioned before, not sure how it is going to work on 32B phones. I'm just praying that first generation mytouch devices doesn't mean the mytouch 1.2 (which may still be considered first gen after the slide comes out). At the very least, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.
As of this announcement, ALL Magics (32b, 32a, 32a 1.2) will be getting this update. When it does come...
DO NOT APPLY THE OTA UPDATE
Just ...wait... for the *proper* version to be released here on XDA and you don't have to risk unrooting your phone.
And yet again no news from Vodafone about their Magic. Let's hope this means good news for Vodafone Magic users.
Vodafone might get 2.1, but it wont be the same Espresso update, since it is custom made by T-Mobiles Devs...
Hey guys check out the Linpack scores they are getting on a Nexus One running Froyo.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...-it-compared-to-2-1-oh-only-about-450-faster/
450% faster than 2.1??? Seriously? ;o
I hope we can get to a point where it's easier to get the stock roms on the hero and other phones. Maybe the mode 'module' design I've heard discussed will help things along.
Sean
tbh im think this is whats holding up 2.1. i think the hero will get 2.2 and sprint will skip 2.1 all together, makes sense if you think about it.

Even so, good firmware can't make up for lack of processing power and hardware. It would never run like it's meant to.
I was checking the AdobeAirBenchmark site, and noticed that the Nexus 1 IS WAY AHEAD of us regarding Firmwares. They already have the 2.3 running according to some tests, and someone in Belgium already has 2.3 in their hands. And today, 2 Nexus Ones were being tested with 3.0 (Honeycomb?)
Check it out:

They are running 3.0 test-keys, not release keys. And if you go to the device lists, u will see all the diff devices and firmwares out to date.

As everyone already pointed out, the Nexus One is a Google supported phone. It'll get updates the minute they are released, everyone else has to wait weeks/months after it. On top of that, the Nexus One will probably continue to get updates long after us. We'll get 2.3 if we are lucky but I can almost guarantee that this phone is done right after that. Not the case with the Nexus One and it's a half year older than the EVO.

The Evo might not get anything official after 2.3, but you can bet it will be supported for a while here on these forums. Hell the HTC Touch got windows 6.5 on it.

Better yet, the Touch is also running Froyo!
Android Central has this from a customer that contacted HTC.
The bigger question for me: which version of Sense will it get? (2.0? 2.1? 3.0? something entirely different?)
[Could someone post the link for me, still can't put outside links in]
First off, here's that link you wanted...
Second, if it gets Sense 3.0 I will **** myself. Likely 2.0, but still...
I really like that lockscreen in 3.0.
Also I guess its worth speculating over which gingerbread it will get. The rumors about the Droid X update had 2.3.3, but supposedly 2.4 is in the works.
As i said with Froyo, I'll believe this when I see it.

I think its "impossible" for us to get sense 3.0 because well its built to run on dual core phones as you see only two phones have been "announced" and not "released" that will run sense 3.0 and both have dual core 1.2 ghz processors and i dont think htc would give us sense 2.0 since sense 2.1 is so similar so if we get sense 2.1 or 2.0 it will be 2.1 because of it's similarities and thats only a slim chance that we will get sense 2.1 because we might stick with out original sense which will be very sad but as the other guy said if the incredible gets sense 3.0 i will also **** myself hehe.

Unfortunately, it's official - HTC will not be supporting Sense 3.0 on non-dual core devices. So it's Sense 2.x or bust for us.

I would imagine HTC would port Sense 2.0 to the Incredible, rather than working with Sense 1.0. That being said, I've been wrong before.

And the clarification:
"Clarification: aspects of the latest HTC Sense won’t work on some previous devices. We are working to incorporate other aspects that will"
Perhaps Sense 2.1.1? Or 2.2?
Odds are we will be on sense 2.0. Engadget just posted an article saying that only the newwer phones will get 3.0 so that's a non-issue. HTC did say we will get gingerbread by end of 2nd qt 2011 so we should be good on that.
The big question is... will be it worth unrooting and loading back on all that bloatware for the 2.3 update?
I'm sure a couple of the devs around here will help all of us not make that decision.
We wont be getting Sense 3 thats for sure, but once again I don't really care what we get since I'm rooted and will always have the best stuff available before stock users

I'm concerned that we will get locked from being able to root after the update. I think that happened with the Aria when AT&T pushed out the 2.2 update where the phone was unrootable after that?
Am I mistaken or is this a legit concern? I'm kind of a newbie to the root scene so I could be being a total idiot here.

I could be mistaken, but given that you can set S-off, doesn't that pretty much guarantee that you can always flash a custom recovery and then, flash a rooted ROM?
Besides, even if the update is "unrootable"... I have no doubt that smarter people than I will be able to find a way.
