Hero Tethering slow - Hero CDMA General

I'm a teacher during the week and a photographer on weekends. 2 years ago when i tethered my mogul I could steam you tube vids no problem. Tethering was fast as hell. Then with touch pro I couldn't reasonably stream vids but could still show my photos to potential photography clients from my webstie so it was ok. Now I'm trying to tether with the hero i got about a month ago and it is too slow to even show my website to clients. This is a dealbreaker - may have to get something else even though i love the phone.
My set up is latest damage control rom with pda net. Pda net is the only tethering option i could get to work but am getting close to dial up speeds. Wi fi tether seems to work but the laptop never gets internet connection. Tried all radios on geeks for me and stock seems best but not by much. Any help on getting this thing to tether with some speed would be greatly apprieciated. I've searched extensively to no avail.

What PRI are you using? 2.11 made USB tethering work for me. It's quick. Here's how to get it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661396&highlight=MNS

I agree with icornwal, using the 2.11_002 PRI gives me consistent >1Mb download speeds
...and it charges the battery

No NFL or Nascar but TV and Sprint Nav both work.

Can't tethering cause extra charges on the phone bill? I swore i just read a story about this on the news about a guy who's kid racked up a $18,000 verizon bill doing this.

I was watching Hulu the other day using my Wifi tether on the hero so I don't think it's the phone causing you a problem.

So who's working on the tether app?

We all need it. Which one of you geniuses are going to write the tether app?
If we can ssh in we could just set up a proxy thru putty/SSH. Simple solution for now but an "internet Sharing" app would be nice. I am not much of a programmer but I love to play with Linux and I am hoping that I can make some c apps work.... like mplayer
Yes! most def!
If I can't tether, i'm buying a crappy sony phone from Tmobile for 3G / modem for my laptop. (if it'll work)
ok.... so does anyone have any ideas? The Wireless API doesn't seem to have support for AP mode so would we have to put our laptops into AP mode or carry a router with us everywhere? If it can be put into AP mode then we need to find out if the kernel will have iptables support. Can we run shell scripts in the Java? I can't find anything on the USB port and the Bluetooth API was removed from the SDK. I would love to see this work but without a connection to the PC I don't see how. Once we get a PC connection it should be fairly easy to make this work.

The reason winmo has so many apps available is because it's been around for a long time. Just having a lot of stuff doesn't mean it has a lot of *good* stuff. Having 1000 notepad applications that don't do what you like isn't really a good situation.
Android is relatively new. But the ease with which someone can become a developer for the platform is definitely a plus for future software coming very quickly. An Android developer can readily download all the equipment necessary to make an Android app for free in a few minutes. If he or she already knows java, it's that much easier.
I imagine that marketplace will be just like it is for other platforms. Many developers who are already open-source-oriented will definitely release their applications for free. Many others will charge just a small amount because they know they can't make a return on exorbitant fees. Also, despite the bad press they've gotten, Google's philosophy is still "do no evil." I don't think they'd let a dev gouge the community. All these factors make the Android philosophy automatically better than the Apple model.

Hah, considering T-Mobile will limit your speeds as low as 50kbps if you use too much bandwidth, I don't think tethering is a great idea. You'll make it like 10 days with 3G speeds and then have dial-up speeds from then on.
they removed the 1gb cap and are doing it based off of usage. I use tethering on my Mogul with sprint and barely use 3gb in a month, with downloading stuff plus WoW and browsing alot. But it's not a tethering app for the G1 remember. Yes initially, but it will be used as an app for any android phone. So the need for a tethering app is there still.
there's a rumor T-Mobile plans to set a limit at 10GB
it's good enough for 99.999%, even you do tethering
tether or AP?
I would much rather have an AP app then say a USB or BT tether imo. I have heard that there is a debug CLI on the USB port but I think that it tied into the walled garden well above the linux shell level, but its a start. I should have got into this thing in 07 but honestly I never thought it would see the light of day...

On certain plans you will have a 10gig limit
It _may_ be closer than you think
Well, all I know is I'd use a LOT of data if I tethered. I used over a gig in 3 weeks of owning my Fuze (1095MB), and using that connection on a computer would easily triple it. I sincerely doubt T-Mobile is going to allow you to take 4 gigs a month when their previous cap was at 1 and they changed the wording of the contract.

Ok so back to a tether app.... has anyone figured out how to connect the G1 to a PC? WiFi would be the best solution if we could set it in AP mode but I haven't found a way to do that. So how about bluetooth? I heard they removed the bluetooth API in 0.9 and 1.0. That leaves USB but I am not sure how to make that work either. If we could get some connection to the PC that would be a big start.

fyi everyone tmobile is requiring the g1 to have a specific data plan that you have to have for the g1. And the word is that it only works with the g1 so you cant just swap your sim card into another phone and expect the data plan to work. I have the same problem and thought I could do that with my WING but apparently not. Guess we have to wait for someone to make a tethering app.

I called CS about this question, the answer is: you can
keep in mind that, G1 uses epc.tmobile.com as APN, try it on Wing
you even can request CS to add VPN tag in order to use internet3 APN
will pick up G1 at corp store, and setup my account, switch to G1 data service and add VPN tag

torrents with titan

has anyone used the titan tethered to laptop to download torrents?
i know it works, but im thinking more along the lines of my carrier (VZW) finding realizing because the traffic looks differently than other traffic.
am i being paranoid? or am i more likely to get caught by vz for tethering if i download torrents.
thanks
Verizon will shut you down if you download excessively. It worked for me, but I wouldn't do it if I were you. I guess if you're desperate.
I think the unwritten download limit is 5GB. My brother got his data connection turned off after we downloaded some torrents over Christmas break at Vail. Good coverage though.
Netflix is probably a better option if you're just jonsing for some movies, they've got an online player now too.
im not concerned with the limit as much as what the traffic looks like...
im well under the 5gb limit, just want to know if they are more likely to notice that its torrents than just browsing internet or streaming movies.
They seem to cut my connection session anytime I visit youtube for some odd reason, that or my connection freezes.
I've used wmTorrent on occasion. Good download speeds. Unlike many desktop torrent clients, the version I used did not have the ability to encrypt traffic. My carrier - TELUS - hasn't bothered me regarding types of traffic. Please note I have 'unlimited data'. Frankly I think it's unrealistic to expect a WISP to pay attention to your every packet.

Each carrier says they have unlimited data plans, this is not really true. If you look in the contract, unlimited usually means 5-8gb a month depending on the service. If you go over those quantities they have the right to end your service. I use my phone as a modem when I go on business trips (about 12 times a year) and I use it for torrents, I been doing it for almost 2 years and never had a problem, but I never went over 8gb (limit for sprint).

I have never kept track of usage, this is very helpful.
Were you keeping track on your laptop or is there a way to track on ppc?
Also is there a utorrent type app for wm? Something we could use to download to sd card?
I use NetLimiter 2 Monitor.
http://www.netlimiter.com/
Its free and will gige you a trafic report for the hr. day, mo., yr.
And you can throttle it down for separate connections.
I try to keep my usage under 5gb.
When I was with Qwest, they thought I was using too much at 12gb.
I have since been monitoring my trafic.
WM Torrent v2, is a usefull program, but I then have to logon to VZW to check my usage.

I didnt really keep track, but I didnt go too crazy. I just tethered to my laptop and used utorrent for DLing stuff
I know that I use over 10gb a month on my tether. I also have an aircard that I use for my home network. I have truly unlimited data ($52.80 a month [60-12%]). I've had an unlimited data plan with VZW for six years or so. A buddy of mine got an air card awhile after I did and he got shut down for streaming movies. "Over data usage limits" was the reason cited. I know for a fact that I stream and download five to ten times more data than he does because my connection is always on and I'm usually downloading something. uTorrent works great while tethered. If VZW was going to shut someone down for what they download VS how much they download, it would require a massive number of employees to keep track of all of their customers.

Sprint Mobile HotSpot Free After Update!

So im checking out the 2.2 on the evo i just updated at work and decided to turn on the hotspot. By some miracle it works!!! I just connected 2 blackberrys and a Ipad to the phone. I just actived the hotspot on my rooted 2.2 and it works as well. I know for a fact that niether phone has it on the plan
Try it with 4g and let us know if it works please.
I got the update last night and tried the 4G hotspot. It does not work on Stock now.
Gives the same PCS login error 3G did before 2.2.

Im on the phone with Sprints NSS to see if its to good to be true.
My regional said to enjoy it while you can
i recall an article or press release that said that Sprint would prorate this. I will see what i can dig up for you guys
Ok so I'm pretty sure hotspot over 3g is free, they are only charging for hotspot over 4g. All this has been said in a few threads I have read, Just checked mine and 3g works but 4g doesn't. One of the threads that mentions this was Ava's 2.2 thread, I'm guessin he is correct, but don't quote me!!! Maybe try it a little and see if they do charge you first.
That would be very odd. They haven't been charging for hotspot over 4G because they couldn't prevent it, until now.
With 2.2 they added the ability to verify if you are signed up for the service on 4G.
Before the update today I could not use 3G hotspot but I could use it on 4G.
Now I cannot use it on either network without receiving the same login error.
Wait, so far in this thread it sounds like:
3G wi-fi is free
4G is not, either you cannot log in or they will charge/prorate it for you.
Has anyone else been able to verify anything? If anyone talks to a Sprint rep (I'm at work, or else I'd be on the phone asking) post their name so we can say they are the ones who told us this was true... so hopefully they'll tell us the truth or else look like a ****.
"____, why did we get 42090589 calls saying YOU said mobile hotspot was free over 3G/4G???"
Well remember guys, the leaked documents did say they were enabling 4g mac id verification, which would prevent 4g hotspot use without the proper credentials (the $30 hotspot charge unlocks that).
Think about it; the big data hog is going to be through 4g, as the higher the bandwith, the more your probably going to download. On the other hand, 3g's data usage is probably far less than that of 4g because of it's download limits. Of course there's going to be even more usage when your tethered to another device, but it's not like it's going to be gigabytes of data per hour as you wouldn't even have the ability to do so on 3g as you would with 4g.
It would make sense for Sprint to charge those who use more data (alike tiers) and allow those that don't with the ability to at least share their connection with another device. It's a win-win situation; Sprint gets to make their customers happy by allowing 3g tethering while still being able to charge its most active users, and we the customers get 3g tethering (not really important to me since I've had tethering since I rooted ages ago lol).

Makes sense to me, I was thinking that more people would be interested in tethering to 4G because of the speed is comparable (if not better) than DSL connections and slow (more like cheap) cable connections.
If this is the case, that's awesome, because the only reason I'd tether is to see a website that my phone had a hard time rendering (which should be nothing now) and to download something for the computer. And my city doesn't have 4G. But if I was in a 4G market, I'd still be happy with free 3G tethering.
I don't think you'll find too many people complaining, except those with non-Android devices. But that's their fault for not moving over to Android!
2 reps weren't sure, neither was their supervisor, we need a confirmation from a higher up.

Good thing about 3g is that at least for me, I get pretty respectable speeds; usually about 2mb/s down and .5 up. With that I can still stream videos and download things faster than a snails pace.

They need to let you know they are changing your plan before they do so. I have been tethering with my phone for years now and ATT has never said anything to and I think it has to do with the amount of traffic. If they see a huge spike of activity and then they look at where that traffic is coming from and they see that you are connecting to battle net then they will know something is up(i know the traffic is not coming from battle net). What I am trying to say is do it within reason, as my guess is the people that they are catching are using well over 2GB a month.
I hope a mod moves this soon... But I heard of at least one person getting nailed with usage <1GB.
i used to tether my blackberry to my ipod touch forever and att has never said anything, i used to use it on my netbook when i went to school too. this was bluetoothtethering. but im think it has more to do with what a user is doing/amount of traffic they are using etc. as for the <gb guy, that may have been a random check or something else. but tethering to play online gaming you will surely get naildd... so use at your own risk knowing the consequences if they/when they find out
I've been tethering for years. I regularly go over 5gb's and at&t has never said anything. I am grandfathered in on the unlimited tho, and I normally only use it for tethering my tablet which is Android so it probably looks as tho it's just coming from my phone. Oh and occasional tethering to my Xbox when my DSL drops out. Lol.

I believe it has to do with the internet stack in the phone. Seen an article a while back on this. If you use a cooked rom they will know if it is based on the stock kernal and rom. If you use something like cyanogenmod they shouldn't ever find out. I think I seen this explanation with verizon tethering and how to get around it.

but that wouldnt explain how i could tether with my blackberry to computers and ipods with no ATT wrath, and i know these are android phones but tethering is tethering..right?
How AT&T can find out?
About four months ago I received a txt from AT&T thanking me for enjoying my trial period of tethering for my iPhone and that a tethering package would automatically be on my next bill. The forum I was on (don't remember where) simply stated that all I had to do was go into an AT&T store and demand that I NOT be placed on the tethering plan. I did that and after a quick phone call from the store to a CSR they pulled it off but with a warning. They said that if tethering activity was monitored again that they would add it back and I couldn't remove it (yeah right).
I was using the MyWi app from Cydia that works perfectly. I used it for nearly two years with no issue. However, the PDANet Cydia app has a "Hide Tethering" option in the program that always made me curious. What is it hiding? MyWi doesn't have that option.
I also used a Windows Mobile phone prior to that with ICS installed and regularly tethered to that as well. I think that ROM was a NotaTreoFan ROM most of the time and then Energy.
I would love the option of adding tethering to my SGS2 but I refuse to pay for a tethering plan. I'm still grandfathered into unlimited data.
Thoughts?

They shouldn't notice anything. I have used barnacle tether on T-Mobile and sprint. So both sim and cdma for a while now. And so far nothing. I'm pretty sure barnacle tether just uses your mobile network and shows up as nothing more than data usage. Bc when using the built in carrier tethering they see the app in use and send that data back. I check my tether stats and network stats and it just shows up as network use. I think you will be fine

Anyone tethering with Note on ATT? Are they detecting it?

As many of you know att was busting users tethering. I dont really use it all that often and since all the talk about att catching people tethering, i thought i would never be able to use it ever again, IF i needed too. Some times share with the klids phones if we are mobile. They dont have data.
Ive turned it on a couple times testing. I connected the laptop to it and loaded "a" page. I havent gotton any emails yet, or ever.
I was just wondering, since this is not an att phone, and there is no tether manager, should we be able to tether without getting detected?
I thought for sure there was going to be a topic already here, but theres not???? my search didnt turn up andything!!

They probably won't say anything so long as you keep within your data cap. Going over it and they will likely scold you...

Thank you!
When I had the HTC Evo I also had the tethering option ($30/month) but, fortunately, my company was picking up 90% of the tab. Now that my Evo is gone and I have a company provided iP4 I can't tether.
I have mixed feeling about tethering as it is a useful tool to have but also very easy to abuse. The problem with the abuse is that it eats into the bandwidth that I need for more casual usage and therefore negatively impacts my usage. I have heard of folks using of 50GB/month and if even a very small fraction of people did that there would be no cellular network that would survive.
When I get the Note I will probably go with the 4GB plan and have tethering. During my time with the Evo I averaged about 600MB/month including tethering, but with the Note I think the data use will go up because it will be far more useful and practical to surf the net and I think I'll probably go over 2GB/month. I will have to see what my data use actually is and if 2GB/month is enough and I can still tether than maybe that will be the way to go.
I don't see the need to try to game the system all that much and am willing to pay for what I use...

I've tethered with my Dell streak for over a year, never had an issue.
You just have to stay under the radar. Start downloading ISO size files, and you can bet you will get dinged.
I have been tethering illicitly for almost a year, first on my rooted SGS and now my Note, because that's been my only available "broadband" connection where I live (and I only get about 300kbps down even on HSPA 3g... very oversubscribed towers around here).
I got the dreaded warning letter from AT&T a couple months ago, where they politely suggested that I need to upgrade my plan to include tethering...and if I continue tethering, they will eventually do it for me.
That was a few months ago and they haven't done it yet, though I did back off on my data consumption after I got that letter (I stand to lose my unlimited data plan as well as seeing my monthly bill go up by $30).
I suspect that they infer that you're tethering based on your traffic, and that they can't actually tell whether you have tethering enabled on your rooted phone. E.g. if you're doing a lot of bittorrenting and connecting to sites like Windowsupdate.com, those would be pretty big clue that you're running a PC over your connection.
I rarely use my PC any more, and no more bt :-( so I am hoping they will continue to let my occasional small amount of tethering slide. And if they don't, I may just upgrade to a Verizon 4g LTE mifi instead, since that is now available in my area

I'm on att and with android phones I've been tethering for almost two years with no problem. It included the Nexus one, the galaxy tab, the inspire 4g, the unlocked sgs2 and now the Note. I frequently used the tethering option to connect my galaxy tab 10.1. I average 5GB a month and have never gotten any warning.

I'm based in the UK so i don't have any useful input, I just find this article interesting. Your guys network operators over in the US sound like nazis. and I thought ours were bad?
I've seen a few networks over here include tethering as a "bolt-on" style upgrade to a price plan, but my question is, how the hell do they know? like with my SGS, tethering is part of the phone, so it was my understanding that they couldn't tell (unless you had anormal traffic - but with phones getting better processors surely that kind of traffic will very soon, if not already, be possible without tethering?)

yeah, like I said: I don't think they can actually tell you have tethering enabled, so if the only devices you're connecting to your AP are other phones, they likely will never figure it out. But if you connect a Mac or PC much, watch out.
UPDATE: AT&T finally forced me into their tethering plan. I put my SIM into an old dumb phone, went online and changed the phone model on my acct, and they automatically dropped me back into my old unlimited data plan. Swapped the SIM back into the Note, all better again
We'll see how long it lasts, but since I'm not tethering anymore (just got a Verizon LTE Mifi) I will probably drop my data pan down to the minimum 200mb and save another $15/mo.
I'm seriously looking into switching all four of my lines over to Verizon now!
