Yup, i just read that and I feel sorry for our X10.but it's common from engadget.Hopefully the 2.1 update will do the X10 justice and bring it to the place it deserves
not until it can shoot laser beam or give us x-ray vision. I doubt 2.1 will even help.
Just wait until sony announce their secret project X.
SONY PSP 2 COMBINE with x10! to form ultimate PSP x10!
Wired's reviewer gives it "7 out of 10", even without Android 2.1

That's what happens when u release a phone in such a large market with so many problems....can't wait to buy the captivate and sell my x10 just not sure ill have any takers

As good as the X10 is, they deserve all the flack they get for being so slow at releasing the 2.1 update.
I'd take an X10 over a Galaxy S any day but the polish that is lacking in 1.6 compared to 2.1 is quite evident and it can be quite frustrating considering the X10 has very capable hardware.
Every company is slow with major updates.
The UX for the X10 went pretty deep.
It took almost 2 months for an official release with froyo for the nexus one.
Be patient and enjoy a solid phone.
I understand feeling the need to defend the X10, but nothing Engadget said is necessarily wrong. It's no longer a great phone compared to the phones that are out today, and that's what reviews are all about.
When there's loads of phones out there running 2.1/2.2 with 4"+ screens, with multi-touch, and without a laggy skin, what advantage does the x10 really have? None. It may be very well built, and it may run what it does very well, but there are many phones that do all that and more.
Engadget has done nothing to blame....every word in the review is true..
i could not understand the customization being done Sony on 2.1 which is preventing them from releasing it early.
i still dont think that there is a phone out there today that i would choose over the x10. Galaxy, iphone etc... X10 is unique for me in many ways i really love the phone even with 1.6. this review is true but is misleading people towards not liking the phone, and really its one of the best phones out there. they can write the same review but put it in a different way and have people like it like i do. its weird why they do that.

the review seems fair, when i bought my x10 6 months ago it was the best hardware on the market and that made up for older software.
Now there are quite a few 4"+ screens, 8mp camera's and most new phones have 2.1 or 2.2, the x10 is now in middle/lower half of the high end market.
I think buyers in the high end market expect their device to stay high end for more than 6 months and I personally think 2 years worth of device support is reasonable.
if it wasn't for XDA - i'd be changing my phone every 3 months( as opposed to every 6 - lol)

I just have my hands on Samsung Galaxy S and frankly, I don't like the build quality of the phone as it is like any Samsung phones with cheap plastics and the feel is not as great as X10.
Galaxy S do have front camera but it does not have rear LED flash which is always my concern when getting a Camera phone, I can live without the front camera but not without the LED Flash on the rear of the phone.
It does have the front 2 buttons, Menu and Go Back button based on touch sensor which is quite good but the build quality really makes me feel like not touching it for long period.
Till now, I still enjoy playing with my X10 and holding it on my hand to show off though it is still on Android 1.6.
I would get the Iphone for my gf, but not for myself. It's got a nice UI but I don't see what is better about the Iphone compared to the top android phones. The price is just too high.
SE is a good manufacturer, but I think they could use a fresh wind over their company. They make excellent pieces of hardware, but their software is usually not something to write home about.
The reason I chose the X10 over the other phones was because SE doesn't make so many variations of one phone. Just look at the Samsung Omnia. You have over 5 different versions of that one.
I just want a manufacturer to make one phone that does it all. Kind of like SE was claiming they did with the X10. Then they can make one downgraded lower budget version like the X10 mini pro. I think they should've only released the X10 mini pro but then call that one X10 mini.
My sis got the Omnia at that time, and within a short period the Omnia HD appeared. I don't know how she felt, but I would feel a bit scammed...

tbh, i don't think a lot has changed in the market over the last 6 months. there are no new phones that have say, 1.5/2ghz/tegra/tegra2 processors, 1gb or rom/ram. the x10 has the same specs as the phones that are still coming out now.
the only thing in that was the 2.1 and 2.2, and we're getting an update within a month with the promise of continued support. x10 is equally as high end as the nexus one, which is equally as high end as the captivate which is equally as high end as the droid X. the only real distinguishing features are in terms of aesthetic design, where the x10 clearly wins.
Samsung and Nokia does that, they'll make so many variation of the same model, so they can grab the whole range of buyer. Like for example, the Nokia 5800, they made so many variation of the same hardware specs that I lost count already, they will just change some little thing, remove something, change housing, and it's a different model already. Save them a lot of money on R&D, I guess...
Maybe SE should start doing that too...

I think SE has made a good move by introducing X10 Mini Pro and X10 Mini to the X10 family as X10 as they are actually capturing different demands from end users as X10 Mini might be targeting at ladies as my sister also like the X10 Mini so much cos it is small and handy for their handbags.
As for the X10 Mini Pro targets to guys or ladies which prefer to have a keyboard but having the same size as the X10 Mini cos some might feel X10 a little bulky to them.
That is my opinion.

Okay, assuming all of that to be true. I could still go out today and buy a phone with the same or very similar specs that already has 2.2 on it, not a mere promise of 2.1.
SE made a mistake by releasing it to the American market before pushing out the 2.1 update. It's a six month old phone with a version of the OS that many (especially among tech journalists) consider antiquated. This might be fine for the X10 Mini's, but for their flagship smartphone? No, that's for a completely different market segment who tend to do a little more research before making a purchase.
Take a look at the X10 mini review on Engadget a couple of days back. It got an excellent review even though it's running 1.6 as well and has lower specifications than the X10 proper. The is because the Mini isn't meant to be a top of the line phone. It excels at what it is meant to do. The X10 proper is meant to be a top of the line Android phone. It does not excel at this, clearly.

Good luck. I returned my Captivate to buy the X10. The Samsung is fantastic on paper and has a gorgeous screen. It's not as fantastic in everyday use, though. It's laggy and phone reception is poor. GPS is broken almost completely, but that should be resolved soon. I loved it for a week and then started getting annoyed at all of the little things.
btw, that Engadget review is a joke. Any phone that doesn't have an Apple on it can't get higher than an 8/10 as the iP4 got a 9/10 and nothing could ever top that phone in their minds.

The mini off contract actually cost more than the X10 for AT&T that they were reviewing. It's only $350. So with the money being similar there's no way I would pick the mini over the X10.
Sony kinda deserved it. By the time they release the update in September all the other phones would already have 2.2 and perhaps looking into 3.0. Not that I don't like this phone, I love the design, camera, etc. But no MT and an old OS is definately a pulldown.

Hello my fellow XDA people! I have a little story to tell. Now, when someone would make a post saying something like "Im no longer an X10 user" or "one less X10 user" I would be the first to post a reply saying how its a useless topic. But this story is slightly different and may help people down the road make decisions. I recently owned an Xperia X10, rooted with nordic 2.1 firmware. And it was great. I sold my X10, and got a hardware upgrade to the Galaxy S Captivate. Then I outright bought a Samsung Focus WP7 from Rogers (which is actually awesome). Through the whole time I sold my X10, I actually thought about how I missed it! See, now that I played with and actually used a so-called higher end android device like the Galaxy S Captivate, I can honestly say the X10 was a much nicer phone for me! Even tho the Galaxy had all those nice specs...I didn't find it anything special. The Samsung Focus, which is WP7 was actually a much much nicer experience then the Galaxy was...and I gave the Focus to my gf. I have now sold my Galaxy S and am getting back my baby tomorrow (xperia x10). So, I guess my point to this story is, even tho a device can have higher and better specs...it doesn't mean its going to be a "better" device for "you"!
Please welcome me back to the X10 Forums!!! I can't wait til tomorrow

But you din't tell us what's thing/things you've missed during that period ? ...I mean Galaxy S captivate has everything just like X10, infact a lil better specs and user reviews , both are android , but what actually made you miss X10 buddy ? ... Is it your own sentimental reason or what's that THING you din't find using other good devices ?

Ok, well first things first. I once bought a Nexus One, when I received it it was running android 2.1 update1. So of course I started hitting the Nexus One forums only to find out froyo was coming soon,,,and its a big deal, its gonna be amazing, this that and the other thing. Once I received froyo on my Nexus, I thought to myself, this is really no better at all. I didn't notice any significant speed difference, nothing was better...just a few more features that I had no use for. The point of this is, 2.1 is very sufficient for my needs. So, even if the X10 doesn't get 2.2 I couldn't care. I then sold the Nexus for the Xperia X10 which I was originally eyeing up anyways. 1.6 was on the X10 was actually more enjoyable than the Nexus imo. Then, I rooted the X10 and upgraded to 2.1. Deleted a bunch of useless stuff like "timescape" "face recognition" etc etc..that just bogged it down. My X10 was seriously running FAST!
So, I was due a hardware upgrade, I heared all this talk about the Galaxy,,,so thats what I did. To me, the overall experience of the galaxy wasn't impressive at all...I don't install alot of apps, I dont play alot of games, so the high specs aren't much to me. I however am a huge picture and video taking person. One area where the X10 completely outshinned the galaxy....My pictures from my X10 were compared to those of the galaxy and well....they just dont compare...which is important to me. The videos were good on both phones, but the X10 seemes slightly nicer.
See, what Im saying is the Galaxy didnt do anything better for me that the X10 didn't do....except the X10 outclasses it when it came to photography and video. That is why I switched back.
I cant say the Galaxy sucks...it doesn't suck...its just the X10 was on par with it even with the lower specs from my experience...as for the super amoled screen..its nice...but the higher resolution on the X10 makes it really nice as well...especially since 2.1.
I am in no way bashing the Galaxy....just wasn't as impressive as said.
Wow! and sorry for the long ass post

I actually really liked this post because:
a) it was not offensive towards any company/user group
b) you wisely used the phrase "for me" a lot
c) it made perfect sense -much unlike similar posts I've seen around here.
So, welcome back, the community needs people like you!
Now, since we're talking about it, I've always stated that X10 might not be "up-to-date" as far as Android version go, but still it is an amazing phone.
I've had it for 6 months and for the first time in years, I really don't want to switch to any other device. I even played with a Desire HD and even though I know it is supposed to be better, I don't think that it can replace my X10.
All in all, it's what matters for each user. Of course, more advanced and better phones will always appear, but if a phone works for your needs, you don't have to toss it or moan about it -or both!

I tested Iphone 4,Galaxy S,Desire HD and all are very nice, but i stick with my X10. And when Sony release MT, maybe 16m Colors and Froyo it will be much nicer.
And no other Device beats the X10 in Design, SE did a very good job at this.

I cant yet...i havent officially got back my x10 yet....should be today sometime...then ill change it
A bit of a weird topic, but I got thinking today...
The X10 is my first smartphone I've ever had, before that I had a tough as nails Samsung SGH-E180, which was one of those cheap 100 dollar phones. I fell in love with the X10 after seeing my friend use one, and without even looking at the competition bought one.
And I love it to this day. Thanks to the devs at XDA, my X10 is the fastest smartphone out of all my friends (who have Desire HDs, iPhones etc) and wherever I go I get a few looks at my phone from strangers, because of it's sexiness .
Once I met another X10 owner on the subway and when we saw that we both had X10s, we had like this manly nod of approval. It was awesome.
Anyway, how much value do you hold your X10? How emotionally attached are you to it? I don't think I'll ever get rid of this phone, when I get a new one I'll probably pass it down to my brother, but I don't think I'd have the guts to get rid of the phone that brought me to the wonderful world of smartphones.
Im the same as you... The X10 is the first smartphone ive had.... and YES... i still see Sony Ericsson phones as SEXY.... damn.... if I could only upgrade the internal hardware on my X10... Id never ever replace it..... Iphone maniacs drool when they see me play Fruit Ninja or Angry Birds While playing a song on my X10..... plus. my phone looks sexier... I love my phone now... I used to doubt it back then.... (1.6) but now... I think different.
I don't think I would be as attached as I am if it weren't for the 2.1 update fiasco with AT&T and the ride Sony Ericsson took us with on Android updates and multitouch. All of which got me addicted to xda, the xda app, Android, and most of all...my X10.
Phone sucks so I got a better one. Selling my X10 and never looking back.!

I love my x10. I got an xplay now and before I bought the xplay I was thinking of using the x10 as a battery charger and use the x10 battery as a backup battery for the xplay, but I just can't bare to see the x10 switched off.
I now keep the x10 next to my bed charged and use it every now and again with WiFi
I too am the same. It is my first smartphone and I love it. To be honest, with the custom Tom's, I far prefer the x10 to my dads DHD. For some reason the x10 is just comfortable and feels good in the hands. My Gf and brother have iPhones and they get jealous (and mildly irritated) whenever I show them new features that they do not and most likely never will have. (I particularly like emailing my brother links to flash websites haha)
I don't think I could let this phone go even if I do upgrade. I too will give it to my little brother

well, same as u. i love my X10. but i will change it to HTC after working.
It's due to working purpose. ( cox going to play stock market)
if compare x10 to HTC incredible S or desire HD or sensation.. i think HTC will probably work higher performance than x10 ><
I love the device.
But the way SE treats it makes me hate them.
The x10 is capable of so much but is being treated so badly by SE it hurts.
I mostly feel the damage in my wallet.
But the x10 is really cool and not too bad for my first android device.
It has taught me a lot about android.
If I were rich, I'd be changing phones like underwear.

I lol'd so hard.
On topic though, i do like my phone very much, even more after finding out about xda, even with a non functioning usb hub.
I was that attached to the X10 that I gave it to my girlfriend and bought a nexus s..

I honestly do not like this phone as a whole. I only got this cause it was cheap. When possible, I'm gonna switch to another phone. For now, custom ROMs and tweaks will keep me busy.
Im not I only went with x10 as I got it at a reduced price, I prefer the Desire HD but could not afford that, I love the speed of the unit compared to my HTC Magic. but this is the last of a long line of smartphones so I am not blinded by the virgin user wow.
The hardware buttons annoy me and constantly turn the phone on, the flap on the usb REALLY winds me up and why it has the usb at the top.
Would swap without hesitation for a desire HD, so no emotional attachment for me
Very much until I found out mine had a problem with the motherboard overheating. Now it's pretty much nothing since I'm pretty happy now with my Motorola Atrix
Well the x10 was my first smartphone and I loved it. But I eventually got bored and I now have an inspire and have never looked back!
If you don't like, love or cherish your x10, then you are probably using it wrong
Quite a lot. I mean I sent it for the repair. It's been 9 days now and i missed it sooo much!
I was walking around the mall checking out iPhone 4, Xperia Arc, LG Optimus 2x etcetera etcetera and i say to myself 'nah I love my x10 i can wait'
Maybe it's because this is my first Smartphone =3
On a scale of 1 - 10
I would be around 9.
I am very emotionally attached to my x10.
I would consider that it is my very first smartphone (but i used asus windows phone 6.5)
I bought the x10 the first day it came out and went through a series of emotion with it. The year 2010 was a wild ride for me and this phone is a sign of these emotions.
If I were to lose this phone, I would be very sad.
I can get quite emo
Funny that we have posts in this thread from people who have gotten rid of their X10 because they were not attached to it, yet they are still browsing the X10 forums?????
Would swap it for an arc in a heartbeat, simply for the better screen responsivity and smoothness
So, does anyone know of people who sold their X10's for the oh awesome, always up to date Desire?
Laugh at them: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire_will_not_be_updated_to_gingerbread-news-2779.php
 to think how much bashing the X10 got especialy in X10 vs Desire discussions, X10 was rippd to shreads just cause it had 2.1, who would've thought in the end the X10 would be the better device to go with?
Loving my X10 even more now!
Don't forget we have not received Gingerbread 2.3.3 yet
Yeah. I know at least a couple of people from this forum who sold x10 for a desire. Once got into a heated discussion about what is better htc+desire or SE+x10. I guess it's an open subject until today . But don't think this news will matter that much. Most people are using custom roms amyway.

isnt cm7 stable already available for the desire? cant see them needing the update to be fair, but surely they could put the htc sense ona diet and give a proper update without making that much difference.glad i chose the x10 over the desire,no comparison imho

True. They could have given gb with sense 1.x if they wanted to. But looks like they won't be doing that. Most people won't care for the update anyway. There are already tons of roms and customs kernels available for them.
you cant possibly say it kills it,because it doesnt. arent they the same processor? so u can argue you have abit more ram but like myself i have 180mb of free ram all the time so it never makes no difference to me.the screen imo isnt any better the the saturation and the colours are much more true on the x10i and the visibility in the sunlight on the x10i is faaaar superior. im not getting into no argument. but i think each have equal pros n cons

Plus you can do a LOT more optimizations due to the open bootloader.
The screen isn't any better? 16 mill colors isn't any better?
I have used both extensively, (I own an x10) and without bias I will admit the desire kills the x10 in everything but appearance and camera.
People are struggling hard to try to claim everything se is better for some reason, like the arc vs. sgs2 thread on here.
It's laughable at best

if you read the forum you would see the bootloader will be open when we receive 2.3.3 and the 16 million colours.we can and i have overclocked.the battery life on the desire sucks so does the gps so its not the perfect phone, i looked into them when i got my x10i and i picked the x10 even when it had 2.1 which says alot

its the SAME processor!!! do you not understand that, so when we get 2.3.3 OFFICIAL and the unlocked bootloader we will be able to overclock as much as you and your beloved desire. il be happy too admit if you had a proper point in why the desire is so amazing, maybe you get 2500 quadrant scores!
I went the opposite way last week, had a desire for a year, sold it and got an x10i and 50 quid change. Im loving the bigger screen and better camera as well as more internal space. The battery life on wolfs tw007 rom is exceptional compared with the desire, i loved my htc but this certainly does not feel like a downgrade, they are very much on par in a lot of ways imho

I have an inspire now and its a big upgrade! Multi touch, unlocked bootloader, 16mil colours, and bigger screen! The inspire is also supported by many devs. I gave my dad my beloved x10 and he asks how to fix this and that and its weird having to use the x10. Also, I can hear people when I'm in a call
I was in dilemma between the Desire and the X10 a year ago
and decided to go for the X10 because of the looks and the camera.
It comes down to personal preference, but I don't like flashing all the time,
I like to try new things but most of all, my phone is my personal phonebook/notepad/message center and so much more, so my data are precious to me
and I like to have something stable that works. And at the end of the day,
knowing myself, the only way I won't get bored is if I like what I see.
Having said that, of course Desire is a good phone, the easily unlockable bootloader is its greater plus against the X10.
But for the reasons I mentioned above, when my father asked if he could have my phone, I gave it to him gladly and went ahead and bought me a new one, in white!
Really, there's no need for heated debates. It's all about what each person wants, needs and likes. Peace!

The desire is better, why are people even debating that, your silly person if you honestly believe x10 is a better phone. Acquire an education redneck

The X10 is better
The ONLY thing that made Desire better was latest updates, it has lost that now, as for developer support, X10 has plenty and can be overclocked, but why do all that when we are getting an OFFICIAL 2.3.3 ROM with the kernel to go with
The X10 has a better display in terms of quality and true 16:9 wide screen ratio.
X10 has the far better Camera plus better video recording
X10 has a larger battery with longer uptime
X10 has a better design
and now X10 will have a later version of the OS, im so glad i phjckd it over the Desire back in July, i was going to take the Desire due to latest updates, so if i had it now i would be SOOO pissed lol.
Would hate to be at the mercy of custom ROMs so early lol.

I sold my Desire for X10 because i didn't like its battery, it drain too quick for my use, they both have pros and cons, & its all depends on personal choice, thats why so many companies are making different models !

You dig the Desire, we get that and we feel for you.
You could be a little more polite though, wouldn't hurt.
dtfs said:
Yeah NOW it will get 2.3.3, desire had it for months now.... TONS of roms, including a fully working arc rom lol
The display on the desire is much nicer, 16 million slcd vs. 65k tft????
The battery while on custom roms is about the same
X10 does have a better camera.
If you like modding your phone (you're here aren't you?), the desire is the better choice.

Sorry to "crash" the party, but I'd never buy a Sony (Ericsson) ever again.
Why? Simple...
- Lousiest support I've ever seen.
They may release the one or another ROM update for their phones, but, in terms of W/X8, dropping support after just a year with lousy excuses like "oh sorry, Froyo won't run satisfactory on your devices and Gingerbread is well beyond the capabilities" is what I take as "****ing the customer over big time".
- Somewhat solid hardware packed into cheap-ass plastic.
I don't know about you but my major gripe with the X8 has always been the back cover which just crackles/crunches when you hold the phone.
That being said ... I wouldn't opt for something else than a Samsung or Motorola. I'm deeply satisfied with my Galaxy S2. Sturdy design, nice looking and so far a great support from Samsung.
That's of course my opinion, your mileage may vary.

I agree with you, SE definitely worst support for their smartphones.
But too bad, i love only SE designs phones.
I satisfy with my X8 now, my daily usages are only Opera Mini, calls, whatsapp and text. The phone's performance is ok for me, the only bad thing is the screen is too small.
I will not buy any phone within next 9months, and since my contract is end on Jan 2013 too.
I think i will buy Arc S for next, or similar to USD 250-300 around end of the year.

SE is all about the design of their phones. I seek performance.
Voting for Samsung, HTC and Motorola!
Depending the price and screen size either Mini Pro or Pro if a hardware keyboard is something you want. I realised after I had bought my X8 that it would have been nice with X8 with hardware keyboard and it seems Sony (Ericsson) thought the same thing since they released the Mini Pro
ray or mini form 2011
m also not very satisfied with my xperia x8, but i still love SE ..................eagerly waiting for sony xperia s
i really like motorola droid razr max because its battery lasts longer.. 3300mah!! that would really last longer..but sad its only for verizon huhuhu..it wouldnt work here in the phils.

Maybe the moto defy+, btw seems that motorole has some models with good battery.
I'm satisfied with my x8 too, it was a very cheap purchase, even if locked with a 12 month contract. And I like the clean layout.
But as others have said, YMMV... It's full of mobile phones out there.

Dear wilbso, I will go for ARC or ARC S in next few months.
Just because of the Design keeping the worst service quality aside. I have voted for ARC also.

The new Xperias look really good, but sadly they aren´t dual-core-phones.
ATM, I need a new PC, so I won´t buy a new phone in the near future.
My contract ends in November, and I think that until then, smartphones with tegra 3 will be available, so my next phone will mist probably be a quad-core phone, maybe a HTC or Samsung.
