Im just curious if i were to buy this phone off contract if i could have it activated with boost? i know 4G would be out of the question but would it get 3G if possible?
You'd have to wait for people to find a way to get it to recognize Boost's connection settings. My Touch Pro, for example, required at least a dozen changes in the registry and connection setup in order to work with Metro PCS.
Unless Android explicitly prohibits this, and I kind of doubt that, there could be a way to get this phone to work with Boost if somebody were to try.
you can get the hero on boost I talked to a guy that did it, evdo never worked from what I remembered, had to get into the programming but it wasn't the hardest thing ever. It will take a lot of patience and lot of work to get all that sorted out.
If you are wanting a quick port, look elsewhere, the hero has been done, might go that route, but the method should be very much similar with the evo.
I'll do my normal speel once I get my evo in how to get into the programming menus, what works, what doesn't ..how to get your msl and the lot, I can try and help with the programming it's self, but I'm sure there are lots of others that can take it from there.
Technically any Sprint CDMA phone can work on Boost CDMA, it's just that Sprint chooses what phones go on what network. SO the cool phones go on the contract network (Sprint) while the prepaid network (Boost) gets the "crappy" phones. This is why i'm considering switching to a GSM carrier so i can get a phone of choice and just pop in a SIM.
I used to know some folks **cough** cough** who could do all this switcheroo on certain phones to Boost CDMA but the Evo is a new beast which would be hard. The phones are getting more complex and locked down more and more.
Really all it takes is for Sprint not to lock down the Evo ESN's to specific plans/features/codes in their system...but that's NEVER going to happen, mate.

Not sure where else to ask but I was wondering if I could get a good answer on this. To the best of my knowledge, all CDMA hardware in the US is the same. Verizon and Sprint phones to date cannot be used outside of their native carrier. I was told that the software is the limitation. Since Android is now the common denominator, it is feasible to think that we will be able to activate verizon phones on sprint and vice versa. Im moving from ATT to Sprint but see some nice Verizon phones on the near horizon. Thanks.
you can switch from sprint to verizon just like you can from att to tmobile..
you'll get the voice network no problem, it's just that sometimes with the 3g/evdo they run on difference frequencies so you generally don't get their high speed internet
you also have to get the msl info to switch it over

thanks for the response. in saying that, is the hardware different? all my googling shows what they are the same hardware (frequency wise) but the software is different. so would it be possible for a dev to make the neccessary changes to use a phone on either verizon/sprint?
Its possible to do but the issue is getting everything and registered to work on the other carrier. Usually voice is not an issue its other things like data, mms or sms that can have issues.
The bottom line on this is you are going against the grain of what everyone else does so you can't expect to get much help from the carrier (the big 3).
If Verizon lets you. You would have to ask them to add your phone to their service. Any reason why you would though? If you're joining Verizon just get the Eris, or wait another month for the Dragon/Passion.
Verizib Customer Techical Support Helpful
I just did the Alltel to Verizon shuffle with my PPC6800. They reprogrammed the carrier over the air. This messed up my various MSL settings and was generally a PITA. I got into Tech Support and whines (being a girl helps) and they tried getting me different numbers until it all worked fine. I also needed to add a phone line while Alltel since I am waiting for a new phone. I bought one at Mal*Wart for Alltel. They tried again to program it OTA when the switch was made. Rinse repeat but again customer tech support (NOT the billing people) found more magic super double secret numbers and got both instruments working. If the hardware is the same they can fix it ALL through Tech Support over the air- just beg.
I work for Verizon and YES you can use another CDMA's carrier on Verizon. As far as using a VZW phone on Sprint, unless you know someone that can reprogram it, it's not gonna happen. I USE to work for Sprint and they have this "if it doesn't say Sprint, we won't allow it" policy.
Verizon has a request sheet if you want to use your CDMA phone on verizon. You have to fill it out and send it in with your phone. They say it takes a few weeks to get it back all programmed for VZW. I've never tried it but I know people have done it. They usually program phones that they already carry, like Sprint Touch Pro to Verizon Touch Pro.. all they did was flash the rom for Verizon and etc. I uploaded the form on here somewhere.
Hope this helps
yes; i switched to cricket

I know that Sprint and Verizon both use CDMA for their phones, but does anyone know if I could take my Sprint Hero to Verizon's network and have working coverage?
My sister just bought a Verizon phone and she has full coverage, with 3G, but my Hero frequently says it is roaming.
you can try... probably not gunna be easy to get them to enter that MEID into their system.
sprint doesnt charge extra for roaming UNLESS like, 60% of your calls are roaming, or something like that. In that case, they will actually call you and say "You're roaming too much, you should go to another cell phone provider" (unless the reps in my store are lying to people, lol... I just started working for sprint a couple weeks ago. Lots of people ask about roaming here)
No, Sprint doesn't charge for roaming, but if 60% of your minutes are roaming for 3+ months, they WILL call to discuss terminating your contract. As for Verizon taking on your hero, no, they 99% most likely will not. It's a VERY rare occasion they let a non verizon device on their network.
would be plenty easy to just sell your hero for a decent price and go to Verizon and get the Droid..

eww the droid?! id rather have an Eris. at least its HTC and u can still hang on XDA
HTC 4-life!!!
lol.. i'm not a big motorola fan, but i do like the high resolution screen..
I thought VZW used slightly different bands for EvDO than Sprint? Or maybe I'm just imagining that since AT&T uses different bands... hm.
Seriously, if you have that much of a coverage problem, I'd talk to Sprint about cancelling without an ETF. May have to talk to their retentions department... someone who works for Sprint could shed more light.
(Personally I'd switch to T-Mobile over VZW. Cheaper, and you have an international-standard GSM device ;P)
Highly unlikely Verizon will activate it since it is not in their ESN database even though they use the same bands. Sprint won't activate Verizon phones either.

yup, if the phone doesnt say sprint either on the phone or in the firmware they will not activate it on their network.

I used to activate non-vzw phones all the time. However, smartphones may not be handled the same.
pretty sure they'll take it...they started their "any app, any device" initiative in 2008
they won't take it. they specifically said they will only activate a phone if it's either unbranded or verizon branded. sprint branding is a no go.

Around here they're pretty much the same. Also, I imagine where I am is on the short list for HSPA+ from TMo.
Anyway, this is a tangent heh.
I don't think you can swap phones between the CDMA sprint network and the Verizon CDMA network. Don't they use different parts of the spectrum?

Not sure about the different parts of the spectrum, but you can definitely move a phone between Sprint and Verizon (from a technical point of view). But you'll have a hard time getting Sprint to activate a Verizon phone on their network. Not sure about a Sprint phone on a Verizon network, but they did make a big deal about their "any device" announcement in 2008, which said that they would allow you to use any CDMA phone.
1. while talk of changing esn is strickly verbotten(i believe?) if one were to find a htc hero that had somehow become corrupt and the meid had been changed to all 00000000000000000's it would be possible to fix with qxdm (the htc hero is essentially the sprint branded htc droid eris)
2. in order to activate phones on the vzw network generally one would *228 ota a cellphone, however in the ota process a vzw phones SPC is (almost)always 000000 while the hero from sprint has a SPC which is a randomly(?) generated number
3. a proper vzw PRL must be loaded to a phone in order to make calls on the vzw network
4. MDN/MIN SID must be properly programmed in order to make calls on the vzw network
5. at this point you will likely need the assistance of a nice vzw tech, as the phone will 611 to vzw, but will not make calls (afaik this is due to a-key authentication?)
if you get the right person at vzw, ask the right questions(why doesnt my vzw branded phone call?), and you have performed the other steps correctly you should have TALK and TXT within 5 min
note:
-you will still show you are roaming all the time (now ALL the time actually)
-afaik visual voicemail does not work
-if you want data expect to use WIFI or spend a good amount of time studying another VZW handsets various data settings and a good amount of time on VZW support(have not even tried this)
-neither i nor xda are responsible for what you do to your phones and as always anything you do is at your own risk!
Something wierd happended last night. I was trying to install that JIt Dalvik install by following the direction on the gumbo 1.5c. I also attempted to used the mapdroyd app Any event after a reboot I had and when it loaded no signal showed , a damaged SD card sign showed. When attempting to place a call it asked me to dial *228 nothing would result of it . Any event a reformat and install on the OS again fixed. All.Any one know of any reason why that would of happened. I was truly experimenting out of curiosity
I can, and its been done
I would like everyone to know I just spent the last 3 days figuring ALL of this out.
As my understanding is, you can change esn as long as you are and "authorized user" and your not stealing anything, therefore if I have two phones I paid for, and I have service with Verizon (which makes me and authorized user as per their TOS.)
then its not illegal. Anyways, for the sake of education it is possible.
I've swapped out my esn/meid. Transferred all my info via qxdm service programming. uploaded a verizon prl. rooted. and now im looking for a suitable Verizon based rom for the hero... I'm attempting to put a stock 2.1 eris rom on right now. (btw the phone texted and called just fine, I just want to have a complete verizon based rom for the finishing touches)
I was given an EVO(Guy wanted an iPhone instead). I am on Cellular South, its a small network but is CDMA. I saw a post about moving the EVO to MetroPCS and was wondering if anyone could answer the question if its possible to mimic my current phone (HTC HERO) settings to move the EVO over?
My carrier will not accept phones from outside their network, but was thinking that if everything was mimicked it might be possible.
Thanks for the input.
Not possible unless your boinking somebody at that company. Sorry. Doesn't hurt to try though.
Sent From My HTC Evo 4G Using Tapa Talk Pro!
LOL...Well that isn't happening.
Still trying to gather enough info on the process used in the MetroPCS to see if changing all the specs would work. I have no idea where Dev's gain the knowledge to undertake these projects. I am still trying to sort out how each setting interacts with what ever carrier your on and what those settings are. What fun, my brain hurts.
You can do it by changing the esn to a phone that it allowed on Cellular Souths network.... but talk about doing that is frowned upon since it is illegal.
Def possible though.
Is there a way to put my G2 on a CDMA Network like say Metro PCS (or even Sprint)? In all seriousness I curious because Ive heard of ppl putting the iPhone on Metro.
This question is in light of ATT tryin2 buy T-Mobile.
There is also the option of Simple Mobile.
not possible, the only iphone that would work on metro is the cdma one offered by verizon. check out simple mobile tho its like metropcs but gsm
#1, no, it won't work.
#2, Sprint and Verizon will only activate their own phones
#3 if you want the G2 on Sprint, pick up the EVO Shift. Same phone, more or less.
Same statements as other people.
The only reason you're seeing people with iPhone on Metro PCS is because they jailbroke and unlocked the Verizon version, which is CDMA.
FWIW there's no reason to freak out and leave T-mobile the day after AT&T publicly announces their purchase. It will take up to a year to be put in place (if the gov't approves it at all), and the phone market will look much different in a year for sure. Don't go crazy and irrational now.
Simple Mobile will always be around, too.
thought they ran off tmobiles network? so in 3-4 years its entirely possible that their network vanished
Ok, so I have a i465 currently, which is iden. I'm assuming to use my Epic 4g I'd have to have an android plan to be able to use all of the features, correct? I'm "guessing" that's why everyone talks about doing it based off the Incognito, well when I say everyone I mean most of the guides I've read...
The Epic 4g I have currently IS activated on a Sprint Unlimited Plan, which I hope doesn't screw me over. I just really couldn't find a solid guide on how to get the Epic to Boost. :-/
Sorry for taking your time with such a silly question, and yes I did search but couldn't find a solid guide on it.
Thanks for your time.
to get the epic 4g on boost you just need cdma, you dont need the android plan. you also need(as far as i know) a Sanyo Incognito phone from boost as your donor phone and you should be fine even if the epic you have is already activated with sprint just if you ever want to get the phone back on sprint save your secret keys(youll understand more when you look at the guides)

So, dumb question is dumb, but why exactly do they have android specific plans? Just to make more money off people who buy android phones? :-/

The "ANDROID" plans are plans that include support for the android phones they sell.
It is legally questionable to differentiate prices on a phones OS. That is not what they are doing. They are differentiating pricing based on support levels for a far more complex phone than a typical, say, BREW phone.
Boosts Android phones require much higher levels of Customer service and regular software updates and customer Service Training updates for the life of the phone. This is what you are paying for when you buy an "ANDROID" plan.
IF you put an epic on Boost, you will have NO support from boost. But you have XDA, and we can be your new Support.
Alrighty then, I guess I'm off to buy a Incognito today. Oh, one more really quick question. I have 3 phones atm. ATT, Sprint, Boost. Forgetting about ATT since it's obviously a different network, on my boost phone I have full signal, but on my Epic, I only have 1 or 2 bars usually, is that because of the iden/cdma difference or will I have full bars when I take the epic to boost?

Are you saying your Iden Boost has full bars? And your Sprint (CDMA) has 1 or 2?
That is expected. Your IDEN has very nice 800MHz frequency. Your Sprint uses 1900MHz. Sprint hopes to soon end iDen and get that tasty 800MHz for their CDMA phones. But for now, they cannot.
The Lower Frequency has better building/mass penetration and thus more bars. Thus you should expect your new Boost CDMA phone to have the same as your sprint phone.
