I have seen stuff on this...just not in such graphic detail lol!
Big thing for me is Super amoled.
I'm assuming my new Evo's screen will be as poor in sunlight as my Nexus.

The Evo uses a TFT screen, not AMOLED. Thus, it will not be plagued with the N1 sunlight screen issues.
The Evo still trumps the Galaxy S as far as I'm concerned. I'd take TFT 4.3 over SAMOLED "4" these days. Maybe in the future, SAMOLED will be more desired, but I see no reason to sacrifice 4G for it.

thanks...sorry for the ignorance....AWESOME!! Part of my motivation is I'm outside in Chicago for work a lot...don't know HOW I'd get by with outdoor viewing with this nexus.
Does that use transflective technology?

No thanks, not as impressed as with the EVO

The samsung ui blows imo. The new screens look great under perfect lighting, short of that they also suck. So unless you spend most of your time inside I'd hold off until the tech improves.

Unfortunately the Samsung has no LED flash or trackball type device.
And....it will suffer from terrible shutter lag when trying to take a photo as they all do.

Looks great! but I'd rather go with Evo still. I'm sure the graphics on Evo will be amazingzingzingzingzing!

I'm going to have to agree with the consensus. The phone looks nice but the EVO seems like it just does the whole super phone thing better. (for the time being.)

The EVO still smacks down the Galaxy S. What is the point of this topic?

Yeah, it's nice and all, but when do you think this device will ever get the Android 2.2 update? If at all?
As far as I know, Samsung is really slow when it comes to rolling out firmware updates.

Eh, it's a Samsung. They have a history of putting out worse firmware than HTC does. It's pretty laughable. They usually don't get the full force of XDA behind their phones, either. EVO's a safe bet.

Thief! :O. You're plagiarizing my work!
In any case, I agree. The only support Samsung phones get are generally from specific samsung forums, and those dont have anywhere near the amount of tech-savvy phone modders and developers than here at XDA.
When in doubt, Samsung is out. You should get an HTC, we all agree. I'm bad at rhymes, so I'll stop at this time.

Whew...didn't know this Samsung skinny!...thanks....not fixating on this device (much) anymore!

is this coming to sprint? nice damn phone.

Who cares about official updates, anyways? It's not like anyone in this thread is going to be running the stock rom! A day after Froyo is leaked/released, if the EVO is rooted, we'll have (a probably broken) Froyo running on our phones. Gotta love XDA.

well if you want to argue custom roms, sdx-developers has had 2.1 on the moment for over a month now... and plenty of custom themes / kernels / development as well. So i would say any new samsung will have a decent amount of support as well.

Samsung? Never again for me HTC ftw and screw Apple while they're at it!

HTC Incredible: The reviews are in

Is it just me or are new Android launches exciting even though we already have N1's?
HTC Droid Incredible Available for Pre-Order: Early Reviews Positive
http://www.pcworld.com/article/1944...able_for_preorder_early_reviews_positive.html
Daniel Ionescu
Verizon's second flagship Droid smartphone, the HTC Incredible, is now available for pre-orders, on a two-year contract for $200. Verizon says the first deliveries should arrive on April 29, if ordered online before 4 p.m. local time by April 28.
The HTC Incredible combines Verizon's network with the latest Google Android release (2.1) wrapped in HTC's Sense UI. The phone runs on a fast 1GHz processor, has a huge 3.7-inch capacitive display and features an 8-megapixel camera on the back. It also comes with 8GB of internal storage, upgradeable up to 32GB via MicroSD cards. No wonder the early reviewers love it.
My PC World colleague Ginny Mies says the HTC Droid Incredible lives up to its name. She found the new smartphone speedy and thinks the display is gorgeous. Mies also liked the HTC Sense UI used on the Droid Incredible (as in not the same interface of the Nexus One), especially the Leap feature, which is an elegant way of handling multitasking and the Friend Stream, a social network aggregator.
Engadget's Joshua Topolsky thinks the Droid Incredible is the "the best Android device that you can purchase in America right now." He claims it is better than the Motorola Droid or the Google Nexus One. Topolsky also found the interface of the HTC Incredible speedy, and the 8-megapixel camera on board can take "stunning photos -- particularly in daylight settings."
Gizmodo's Matt Buchanan also recommends the HTC Incredible as the must-buy smartphone on Verizon. He notes the Incredible is fast indeed, and that the Sense UI is an improvement over the standard Android interface. The camera on the Droid Incredible is rated decent by Buchanan, though he mentions that the phone itself can feel a little cheap and too plasticky.
Boy Genius' review of the HTC Incredible is also favorable, calling the smartphone his "favorite Android device to date." He thumbs up the corporate integration, the social networking elements in the Sense UI and the Web browser. Boy Genius also makes a fair point when he reminds us that due to the use of the HTC Sense UI in the Droid Incredible, Android updates will take longer to trickle down to the device than for Nexus One users.
Over at IntoMobile, Will Park also gives the HTC Droid Incredible a glowing review. He mentions the feature set is "one of the most impressive of any smartphone currently available today," and highlights the fact that due to Verizon's network technology, you can't use voice and data at the same time.
When it arrives starting April 29, the HTC Droid Incredible will have to battle it out with the Nexus One, which is also slated to arrive on Verizon around the same time. Fans of hardware keyboard might want to keep hold on their Motorola Droid for now, as so far there are no new Verizon Android phones with a physical keyboard expected. And if you are up for 4G Android goodness, you can always wait for the Sprint HTC Evo.

The basics are of course a Nexus One with an 8MP camera and Sense pre-installed.
I'm jealous that reports are saying that the soft button weirdness is no more on the Incredible (Engadget), and scrolling around is much smoother. I'm wondering, do you think HTC made a new version of Sense for the Incredible? It's hard to say since you can't look up the version number of Sense on your phone.
Also, 1 year contract is $230 which isn't too bad. And the plans are expensive as hell of course, but my company has a 19% Verizon discount. The only thing I'm worried about is the re-sellability of a CDMA phone. With an unlocked Google phone, re-selling is easy as pie. But can you re-sell a locked CDMA Verizon phone?
Anyway, I'm excited about the Incredible. The more Androids out there, the better! The Droid army is growing, and quickly.
And I can't wait to see what they do with the ad campaign. I'm sad there weren't any Nexus One television ads. So yeah, who's ready to see some badass commercials? DROOOOOOOOOOOOOID
I had the opportunity to play with an Incredible this weekend. I have a friend that is testing it for two weeks. (I am a Nexus One owner)
Here are my thoughts:
1) It is the Nexus One only square.
2) The change in hard button placement SUCKS! The back button is in an odd location.
3) There was no speed increase that I could see in Sense UI
4) If you like Sense UI, buy this phone. If you don't need Sense UI there is no reason to own this.
5) 8MP camera...WOW...There is clear photos, crystal clear photos and then there is an 8MP camera photo. Seriously, I could photograph a wedding with this thing.
The phone was nice. The hard buttons were a real problem for placement. They responded the same as the N1 buttons, no change there that I could tell. The colors of the phone were great and it ran nicely. I was told by the tester the battery is not terrible, but not quite what she expected it to be.
After playing with it for a while if you Love Sense UI or would ever need to photograph the left toe of a bee flying 20 ft away from you, but the Incredible.
It actually is a great phone, but all things considered, I still prefer my N1
Engadget said the Incredible is the best android phone out in America right now, but why?
The 8 megapixel camera? 5 megapixel is more than enough for point and shoot pictures, I mean, the picture gets resized anyway when mms is done converting it. I just don't really see any point in having a high megapixel camera on a cell phone, unless you are really going to print out some posters.
The internal storage is nice, if it will store apps automatically.
And sense ui, well we've been having it for a while now.....
It's probably just me, but I still think they (nexus one, desire, incredible) are the same phone.
What erks, me is they say that it has a better screen scrolling smoothness than the nexus one...but how? It's using the same hardware different software, but essentially the same thing. Can software really make it that much better? Especially knowing how much resources sense uses? I never even thought of my nexus as not scrolling smooth at all, I didn't know it was an issue
Over on Android Central they did an overview of multitouch on the Incredible and showed it didn't have any of the same problems the Nexus has. Dont they use the same screen? Wouldn't that mean that the issues on the Nexus are software?
Here is an AndroidCentral video showing the Multitouch Test on the Incredible and on the Nexus One.. I guess one can assume that the screen hardware on the Incredible is different from N1. If I recall correctly, the Android developers had said that the N1 Multitouch issue was was related to the N1 screen hardware.
EDIT: I guess the poster above beat me to the punch while I was getting the video link.
nexous one
Ya the only thing I'm mad about is i paid around $600 dollars for this n1 and don't get me wrong this phone rocks and i have never had any problems at all no touch screen problems our anything but ya the incredible is coming out and is only $199 after rebate in store and eveyone can get it for that cheap after i paid so much for my phone and its better.
I just don't want a CDMA phone
the contact price is way more then tmobile and i would like sprint instead
I would love the 8mp camera because i own alpha auto detailing in Chico CA and i like taking pics of my cars before and after with my phone and not have to have a camera
http://www.alphaautodetailing.com/
To me that touchscreen becomes a software issue is a good thing. That means we can hope for improvments there instead of just being an is what it is deal were it hardware. The incredible is a great phone and sense is a real value added. Were I married to verizon I would choose it over the N1.

Agreed. This is good news, even if it's just another way for open source solutions to move ahead of greedy corporate models. But the Incredible really does look like a nice phone - which is even better.

Agree with this, too, sort of. Until optics get a lot better, the difference between 5 or 8 mega-pixels really won't matter one iota. However, there is something to be said for the HTC camera software, which by most accounts is a vast improvement over the N1's "pinky".

I'm in the same boat... I was hoping that the "surprise" about the Incredible was going to be that it was a CDMA & GSM WorldPhone like the Verizon Imagio... I was seriously considering switching from AT&T to Verizon, but this might be a show stopper for me as I use my GSM phone when I travel. I was already bothered by the inability of Verizon's CDMA network to support simultaneous voice and data. I also believe that the Incredible won't be able to support docking stations as it lacks the charging contacts at the bottom.

don't listen to that guy from android central. Most of the times he jumps to conclusion without thinking too much.
Unless, incredible goes through a tear down, we cannot say that the screen is different. I do remember Cynogen mentioning that there are settings in kernel that solves the multitouch tracking issue. Droid has them enabled... so most likely Incredible also.
In anycase... incredible is a good phone. Extra RAM and ROM and better Camera, does make this phone better than N1.... how much better... well it depends on how much these 3 things matter to you personally.
having used a few HTC phones... I don't trust HTC for support. They launch new devices left, right and center and start ignoring a device within a year. N1 is google's responsibility. They have to support it for a longer time. Just wait till FroYo launches.. you will get my point.
All I'm waiting to see is one, if the Incredible has a newer version of the Sense UI, and two, assuming that it does, when shall we have a mod for use N1 users.
Honestly, I really won't try the Sense UI until BT works on it as I really don't want to get a "distracted driving" ticket; however, the issues Android already has with BT irks me.
Though like the touchscreen issues, the BT issues are kernel related, so I guess we'll just have to wait until FroYo or perhaps an incremental release between Eclair and FroYo.
I've read the Incredible is using a different touchscreen than the nexus/desire.

Ah ok, just read this.
We might have overreacted when using the word broken to refer to the Nexus One’s multitouch performance, but that post helped us learn the true culprit of the issue. When we took a closer look at HTC’s touch sensors used in their Android phones, we discovered they were using the Synaptics ClearPad 2000.
It turned out there was nothing wrong with the ClearPad sensor. It was working as advertised and was never meant to track the multiple touches that we were expecting. Google is likely to improve the multitouch performance with future software updates, but the Nexus One (and other HTC phones) will always be limited in what they can do with the Synaptics hardware.
HTC must have anticipated Google’s move to a more multitouch friendly Android because new reports suggest the handset maker has upgraded their touch sensors in two upcoming models. Various sources are now reporting that HTC is using the Atmel maXTouch family of touchscreen controllers in the upcoming Droid Incredible and EVO 4G.
The Atmel maXTouch sensors (mxt224) offer superior performance and low power consumption. These new sensors recognize an unlimited number of touches, offer faster response times, and have an excellent signal-to-noise ratio.
Atmel has produced a quick promo video to demonstrate the power of their maXTouch series. A complete series of videos is available on the Atmel site for additional details.

Looks like it is indeed a different screen.
N1 uses Synaptics ClearPad 2000
Incredible (and Evo) use Atmel maXTouch
Man, I'm jealous of the Incredible now.

Man ain't that a bummer for us N1 owners.
Though having multi-touch is useful more while browsing and such; I really don't play games on my device minus the occasional dabbling with NESoid, and even then I use the trackball and volume up/down buttons.

Loving Hero - Leaving for Galaxy S

I've known and loved my HTC hero for a while now and my contract with Orange UK is set to expire end of September. I've been somewhat irritated by the delay with the 2.1 ROM for Hero, have tried (and not really got on with) most 2.1 ROMS and now am happily running the Modaco 3.2 with root and my new favourite: Swype!
Anyway... The thing I'm a bit tired of with the Hero is the speed. Generally it's fine and I'm used to it, but I definitely can'y wait for more SPEED! So surveying the scene I've decided to get the amazing looking Samsung Galaxy S when it's released. I was thinking of getting the next iPhone but I just can't go back to such a closed system without ROOT!
So... I've LOVED tinkering with my Hero, installing custom ROMS and stuff like that - I'm wondering how likely it is that the Samsung Galaxy S will even be "rootable" or have custom ROMs developed for it? I've seen the HTC Evo but not sure if that's going to be released in the UK and the Galaxy S has a better screen and just looks like it's a better phone in general. Is it mainly HTC phones that get "root"/dev love on these forums or is it likely I'll have much luck with the Samsung?
I've just googled some pics of the Galaxy S.
Both case and the OS skin look like a blatant iPhone rip off I hope it's got a sound recorder so it can save you the trouble of saying "No, it's not an iPhone it's a Samsung running Android" ..... "What's that?"
Even though HTC aren't the best at releasing updates, at least they're original! What's wrong with a Desire?
And yes, Swype is amazing.

Galaxy is better in almost every way, it has a dedicated GPU that's about 4 times as fast as the snapdragon. But it doesn't have such a widespread userbase. And samsung doesn't offer updates afaik so I'd rather get the desire.
Oh yeah it looks like c...
I'm all in for the Samsung Galaxy S too, when it arrives. It's sexy as hell and I know I'll love that dedicated GPU, that's even way better than the iPhone 3Gs'. My hero has served me well, and still does. My hero is also super fast, now that I've overclocked it to 700 mhz.
Edit: Just remembered also, that the desire and nexus screen cannot even remotely be compared to the screen of the samsung galaxy s. The screen is nice on desire and nexus, but there has been some talk about an actually lower effective resolution. Look at how the text isn't that crisp, you will notice.
my friend just got the HTC Legend on contract with vodafone before that he was on orange with a nokia n95 and he lives out in the sticks and now
gets much better signal and the phone feels a lot faster and is built much better than the hero and runs 2.1 you should look in to it

That would be the Pentile type display in the Nexus One and Desire. Unlike most LCD displays, a pentile type display does not have all three RGB subpixels, and uses subpixel rendering to make it 'look' like it has a higher resolution. It's actually Samsung's display btw.
I'm not sure if this is the same for the Super AMOLED, since the S-AMOLED is supposed to have integrated the touchscreen with the display (increasing clarity) and has nothing to do with how the pixels are rendered..
Anyway, I would also advise against getting a Samsung. If you think HTC's firmware/software support is bad.... Samsung pretty much abandons its products after it has been released.
Thanks
Thanks for the feedback guys - some great info here. Bit worrying the comment about Samsung abandoning their products!? Won't that be less so because the Galaxy s is running android? I have to say that the Galaxy S is looking SO good so far that I might get it and just deal with the lack of updates - probably regret it but what choice is there?
I know, I know that there will always be "better" and "faster" when it comes to tech like this but don't you think that 1GHz is about *finally* the sweetspot for running stuff nice and fluid on a smartphone? I mean my comp here at home is a Core 2 Duo and I can't tell *any* difference between this and the similarly specced Core i3 at work for everyday tasks. In the same way, even if a 1.5Ghz phone comes out after the Galaxy S (which isn't due to arrive later in the year anyway) - even though we'd all want a faster phone, staying with 1ghz aint going to be too shabby, is it? The Hero I think is *just* slightly on the wrong side of slow when it comes to speed. Maybe the Legend fixes that - I haven't tried one - and wouldn't want to now some incredible phones are on the way.
Anyway - if I don't get the Galaxy S, what do you guys think is the best alternative given my contract expires at the end of this Spetember? Any announcements been made about the Evo4g or some other super quick phone?
Also - no one's really mentioned but if i DO get the Galaxy S, how likely is it that I'll be able to root it and install custom Roms or updated custom roms in the fullness of time? Does the community in general only tweak with HTC phones?
Thanks again!
Samsung does update some of their Android phones. It's just that they are slow and they have not update them all.
History of updates of Samsung Android phones (may not be exhaustive):
Moment (M900) : 1.5 -> 2.1
Galaxy Spica/Portal (i5700) : 1.5 -> 2.1
Behold 2 (T-939): 1.5 -> update to 2.1 approved and should be coming soon
Samsung Galaxy (i7500) : NO update to 2.x (phone released 6-7/2009)
It remains to be seen how many of the above will get an update to 2.2, if any.

So, why did you choose Samsung Galaxy over the other Android phones?

Hi fellow Samsung Galaxy S owners,
I'm at the verge of buying my first Android phone now. However, I still have a few things to confirm.
I've ruled out Evo completely as it does not work in most part of the world, despite the gorgeous screen size that I absolutely would love. I want something that is at least four inch in screen size, gives me good visibility under bright sunlight, comes with at least 16 GB internal memory, front camera, and something that runs Froyo 2.2 ( in other word, the vendor must already have that ready for upgrade now).
Is Samsung Galaxy S the one?
It has everything u wanted apart from the 2.2 update which is expected to be released in ~4 months.
Thanks leoon,
Do we have any official statement yet from Samsung guaranteeing that they will release an update in 4 month's time?
The next question is, in the event that they abandon the phone and refuse to issue any upgrade, is there already a good cooked Froyo that I can use now?
I understand that there is a great performance improvement moving from 2.1 to 2.2, so am really keen to get on 2.2 ASAP.
It is confirmed officialy about korean version 2.2 so we can be sure about others also.
SGS is much faster than evo, I don't understand why you even consider about it.

Maybe, if you are into 3d....
But in normal use, the EVO feels faster (I just played with one for a while last night).
The Evo exhibits no lag at all and feels peppier than my SGS.
Is SGS really faster than EVO? Any link that I can see the benchmark comparision?

the sgs is much stronger in graphics
cpu wise they are about the same, can't say how much the same cause i don't have one xD
but i'd rather have the hummingbird processor
+ this screen
Froyo (2.2) has already been announced for Asia. It will come in early August. Samsung said that International users will follow soon.
I chose SGS over Desire for its screen, better processor and GPU, better looks. I come from a series of iPhones (2g, 3g, 3gs) and I don't miss them at all.
SGS has some lags from time to time, but nothing really frustrating.
I use it all day and the only con is the battery duration. It needs recharging every single day (from 18-24 hours of usage).
One more thing that i don't like so much is the application for exchange email, but I'll look for a better one.
Other than that and of course the lack of paid applications due to my location (Greece), android and SGS fulfil my needs.
Why did I choose the SGS? (previous I had a Nexus One, previous to that iPhone 3G)
1. 4" screen
2. Better quality touchscreen than N1 (no axis swap bug)
3. PowerVR GPU
So, other than Nexus One, nobody has froyo 2.2 yet? I didn't want Nexus as the hardware is outdated by now, but its main attraction is the ability quickly keep up with Google's latest firmware.
BTW, to Dexter666, the key attraction of EVO to me was the 4.3 inch screen size. I was hoping that they have a GSM UTMS version. But since they only have CDMA version, the use is very limited, hence it's greatest weakness. It is not possible to use it even if we want to in Australia and most part of the world.
Also don't forget it has best video player compare to any other android handset as well as music player.
Support for almost all the native video codes, in DIVX & MKV up to 720P. No need to wait for any video player.
Music player with EQ. SRS WOW 5.1 through headset. Best screen to watch high quality videos.
Look at other forum section where owner of other (HTC) android handset always asking for good video player. I use to be among them once,
not any more though.
It hold batter 3G signals then my N1 and Desire and good battery life too
HD video
I was considering getting the desire but felt like it was a little old now and the new iphone 4 might have had to be my option though I so didnt want to go there! Then the SGS came out in the UK just last week and it had HD video capture an excellent screen and 2.1 so I was so there, had it for 5 days now and it has to be said it is one massive jump from what I had with the G1. The video capture might be the best in the mobile space! I compared it with my mates iphone 4 and the audio is crap on his in comparison... basically he is a massive apple fan boy but was looking at this phone with real envy as the screen did look better on a quick comparison!
couple of bugs with the clock, and browser but im confident that these are just teething issues with my hand set as I dont see many people talking about it on the net (yet)
I always had Samsung phones before and my Omnia i900 with WM had to be replaced. I went for the specs (the speed/sound/screen) and the look (and no I'm no iphone fan, just incase ) Never had experience with android but I must say I made a good chooise.

and mine is actualy a little faster.
Since your from Australia, the Optus plans for this phone are dirt cheap consider what you get. You pay what, $800 give or take online for the 8gb model, $850 or so for the 16gb (used to be a lil more pricy, add $50 or so) when you buy outright. Great caps, coverage is okay and decent data. Phone is fast, customizable and fun to play with. Typing is also really easy and the screen has awesome quality. Loving Vilingo for when I drive.
It was a pleasant change from Windows Mobile.
Edit: I also have to say, I ordered this phone online and got it within a day or two (ordered Monday night, received it early Wednesday morning). Optus staff are great and very helpful. Had to transfer my number and I got a very nice lady to sort out my issue within a few minutes. Very happy with this phone. Touchwiz UI is good but I did change mine.
Was going to get the HTC Desire, but it was not available anywhere. So I ended up getting the Galaxy S instead, just waiting for the delivery to arrive.
why sgs?
android, super amoled, touchscreen quality, 1ghz, gpu, microsdhc, presumably good coverage in these forums
disclaimer: not all of those might be unique to this device
All of you have posted some good points. To summarise, among the current top end Android phones
- best screen especially under bright sun
- best video recording sounds, in HD.
- best GPU
- best video and music player
- better touch screen than all HTC phones (but is it true multitouch like in iPhone?)
- one of the few Android phones with front cameras
I understand it does not have flash for the camera, right? This is one of the negatives, but in view of the other positives, I'm prepared to overlook this.
Another few questions outside this topic:
1) Is there any FREE software to sync my outlook contacts and calendar to Samsung Galaxy S?
2) Is there any FREE software to sync my musics, videos, podcast from iTune to Samsung Galaxy S, maintaining the playlist, ratings, and album artwork?
3) Can I get TomTom or Navigon Australia for Android yet?

+1 for why I choose the phone,
but I should also have check the software..... and as per now, it lack some feature that shoucd be std (ie proper contact synchronization, repeated lag, erratic GPS positioning) I could understand if it was samsung's first android phone, but it's not the case AFAIK
I thought all android are equal: we are not there yet....
The UMTS/GSM version of EVO should be HD2. But it's on WM6.5...

Do your think the new mytouch4g is better

Well I've been showing my phone off tio my friends and most of them say they think the new mytouch is better than the vibrant and some guy thinks his ipod touch 2g is better because his pocket pond app has better graphics

its all about personal preference.
vibrant has best gpu,samoled screen.
mt4g has flash, hspa+, and a ffc.
id personally stick with my vibrant. once its lag fixed and oc'd its a beast.
and that ipod 2g is not better than the vibrant lol that guy who said that has to be a noob, the reason pocket ponds looks so good on it,because its optimized for the hardware.
Yup! What's ffc

1. Vibrant will have full flash once 2.2 hits.
2. Hspa+ is a backwards compatible service, so the vibrant will still benefit from it (up to the hardware limit which is like 7 mbps)
3. You can mod a ffc onto the vibrant if you really want it...but there really aren't too many practical uses for it right now anyway.
The vibrant is by far still a better device imo.

I think he is talking LED flash
From the last Apple announcement:
Reporter: What about flash support?
Steve Jobs: Our phones love flash, that where we store things.
I do think Vibrant is a better choice, even though the Snapdragon 2nd Gen processor in HTC phones (G2 and MyTouch 4G) is a beast on its own, but if it weren't for somewhat childish looks of MTG4 and the fact that you cannot mod the damn thing (only temp root, and no RW access to NAND) makes it a bit of a downer.

Will you have to get the official update to get flash? I'm running Eugene's froyo and my phone won't receive any updates at all for other reasons so if i can't get flash that would suck.

my mistake i should have said led flash.
and yea once the banding issues are fixed i am buying a Ffc lol
From a majority consumer point of view, the MyTough3g is better.
FFC isn't a niche device, it's pretty mainstream considering you can now chat with people who use Yahoo Messenger from your Android phone if it has a FFC. Don't really care about Qik, but Yahoo is very much in use in the world. I suspect Windows Live Messenger will debut this feature quite soon with some Windows Phones coming out with FFCs.
The phone is snappier. Doesn't have the crappy RFS file system. The GUI looks good, and the Speech recognition works great. Doesn't feel like a paper plate in you hands, either (though I've added a cover to my vibrant to put some weight on it).
The Vibrant is a good device but the software (and I've heard FroYo doesn't really change much, outside of the fact that it's FroYo and yes I do need some of the features in FroYo so I welcome it) is terrible and some of the ommisions are just mind-boggling. No LED on front for notifications, for example. No Flash. GPS that still doesn't work correctly for half the people who have it. Slow as hell file system that makes the phone unusable from time to time. Less Application RAM than an HTC Aria. The GPU really doesn't matter because Android 2.1/2.2 still doesn't have a gfx accellerated GUI and Windows Mobile 6.5 has more games than Android (more games that you're bother installing, that is).
HTC also typically has an HTC Sync application for their phones, which makes managing them much easier than Galaxy S in the US (no Kies for us).
TBQH, I'm tired defending this phone. I wonder when others will get tired of it (prolly never on this forum, people still call the HD2 the greatest phone on earth here). This device is being completely overshadowered by other offerings and the only reason why it sold so well on AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint is because:
1. T-Mobile didn't have anything else worth buying in the range of high end smartphones (HD2 not an option for most people with it's OS and problematic reputation)
2. AT&T Doesn't have much other high end smartphonts other than Palm Pres and the Torch that just came out with the Captivate (the Pre and Torch feel more mid-range compared to iOS/Android devices, and there was the Aria as well in that space).
3. Sprint had so many issues with Evo backorders/issues that customers had no issue but to get something else. They have no other good phones. Their Pres are 1st gen and no one wants a Touch Pro 2 or Hero, Lol...
How that there are other good phones coming out... I wouldn't expect much.
Not everyone is a power user. My mom doesn't cry about not being able to jailbreak her Blackberry and when she had a WinMo phone she didn't even install an app on it. She just used it as a phone/txt device (basically as a feature phone). The temp-root issue is only an issue for a very small minority of users - so it isn't even an issue at all in the grand scheme of things.
I looked at the new mytouch.
No thanks.
And I'm at a loss as to the above posters issues. This is my third android phone, and it us by far the fastest happiest android device I've used. My last phone, the Nexus one, although sexy, would need a reboot at least once a day to keep it snappy.
And I live the size if included internal memory is the Vibrant. No need for special hacks to get files on SD.
The Vibrant, for me, is a fantastic phone.
And yes, can't wait for the banding issue to be resolved for the FFC.
Oh, and it doesn't need a flash. It takes better pictures in low light conditions without one, than other phones that have a flash
Well, the one thing that is unmatched on the Galaxy S line is the amazing screen. Sorry, but I can't go back to LCD or plain AMOLED after this. After all, you use the screen more than any other feature on a smartphone.
As for the other things, it all depends on what's important to you. GPS works great for me now. FFC would be nice, but not necessary for me. As for flash? Meh, LED flash is barely adequate as a solution.
Personally, I picked the Vibrant because aside from the core smartphone functions, I wanted a phone that could also replace my old iPod. So for me, having 16gb of built-in memory was more important than even having a camera, much less a flash.

My First Impression Of The MyTouch 4G:
The screen on the MyTouch 4G is much higher in resolution. You can barely see pixels. The MyTouch 4G produces real whites, the SuperAmoled produces green/blue whites. However the SAMOLED has a much better contrast ratio, meaning colors pop since blacks are much darker.
The 3.8 inch screen is too small for me
The Build Quality of the 4G seems to be good.
The GPU seemed slower than the Vibrants PowerVR.
The CPU is faster on the 4G.
Now here is the odd part. I must admit I've noticed the same thing with the G2.
Both the G2 and the Mytouch 4G are HSPA+, while the Vibrant is not. However, side by side, running speedtest app. The vibrant EVERY SINGLE TIME had both higher download and upload speeds. It just doesn't make sense. Side by side, the Vibrant got almost 6mbps download. MyTouch 4G best it could do was 3mbps. Same with the G2, I don't get it.

Every phone has its fanbois. I just left T-Mo and played with an HD7.
Vinrant fells like an 8088 PC-XT compared to that. Only way to think this phone is snappy is to have only used worse phones.

Me and my roomate both had our Vibrants in the store. We were astonished by the difference, just in scrolling form home screen to home screen. The Vibrants were obviously laggy doing something trivial. The Windows phone just blew through everything. The UI is beyond polished. The minimalist look definitely works well.
Microsoft definitely took the best route short of developing their own phones: Lock down the hardware and focus on doing what you do best - software ~ namely the OS and all the device drivers. Google should take note, or Android will suffer (although I'm sure it will be prevalent in the low-mid range device market, since Nokia isn't that big a player - at least in the US).
We played with the MyTouch 4G. The phone itself is ugly and I'm not a fan of screens < 4". It has some Sense elements in it which = update churn like 90% of other Android phones. The G2 performed decently but it has a whole host of problems. If you haven't experienced that ****ty hinge I implore you to go to a T-Mobile store and play with it. The minute the phone is perpendicular to the floor the phone starts closing (more like slamming) on you. That makes the phone unusable for me if I'm lying in bed and using it (as I often do before I go to bed). I guess something like an Epic 4G or Droid 2 wouldn't have that issue, though. That hinge was a terrible idea, Lol.
Oh, and did I mention the touchscreen keyboard on WP7 is /drools/ worthy.
I can't see myself getting any other Android Phone again.
If you get a phone with a UI on it that looks decent it is bound to come with hoards of issues and update churn. If you get a stock phone the built quality is pure crap and/or half the space is taken up to lock the phone down instead.
In any case, I heard FroYo for Galaxy S in the U.S. is supposed to be coming Nov. 11 on Facebook from "Samsung Galaxy S."
I heard Galaxy S performance is still below acceptable with FroYo, though... Some people are reporting regressions.
i just picked up the new mt4g. i have two phone lines (one for my work) and will probably keep both phones. i will need to use the mt4g for a couple of weeks go form a complete review/opinion on the phone v. the vibrant.
the mt4g is very solid and very snappy considering all the bloatware. with its HTC Espresso UI, the interface isn't for every body. Just like HTC sense it does a huge amount of social integration, moreso than the vibrant. And just like HTC sense you have pre-set "themes" you can load in terms of personal and business preferences.
it's screen is super crisp but no where near as "vibrant" as our vibrant phones. in terms of gaming, i haven't compared the two yet as i'm sure the mt4g can handle them well to a certain extent vs. the vibrant being that it's a second gen snapdragon. but i'm sure in terms of rendering and graphic display, it won't match the vibrant. i'll probably compare the gaming and video playback between the two later this week.

samsung Galaxy s4
Well i like very much Samsung galaxy s4 than iphone 5. I like SmartPause and smart scolling fetures in this phone. i am very exciting for use this phone. really i want it as soon as possible.
Floating Touch. It was the main reason I wanted the Note 2 over the S3, only now I don't even need the s-pen. Everything else is a plus, but for my needs even the S3 specs with floating touch would be acceptable. BTW, I'm talking about the international S3 (I have the U.S. S3 and I'm sorely missing the Exynos features like Screen Modes and Multi Window ).
I like the....nothing there that is like-able....
I'll most probably buy the hTC One!
Dead cookies leave no trails...
Ha ha I should've know and be more specific on the OP. No need to post here if you don't like anything(I personally think it's impossible but..). The thread is "What do you like the most?"
The 5 inch 1080P super AMOLED display is what i really am looking forward to.
Sv: What spec do you like the most in the S4 and will you buy it?
Nothing in terms of hardware specs has impressed me since every spec in the s4 has been out for a while now,
Actually I would choose any screen over amoled since it has very inaccurate colors, like my tan friends turns extremely orange in their pics, my blue clothes turns crystal blue, dark red turns red and worst of all dark areas details can't be seen as good as other screens as everything turns darker as it shouldn't be, white pixels looks gray
The camera is also something that isn't special, Sony have been used the same camera specs for long now, and sorry for hating but music playback has been worst with previous galaxy's compared to HTC and Sony,
And last the wipe hand over screen thing is the worst I have seen in screen development since it takes much more energy to do and gets slower to scroll between pictures and is also looking retarded to do in public than just simply swipe with your fingers, only thing that was good was the eye tracking thing, but that is software and would be easy for me to port while having a front face camera and root
Also Samsung provides system updates that is full of bugs so that they send you hundreds of versions of for example ics or jb, they are not testing everything properly before releasing their updates, I have no clue if this was a problem for s3 users but my s2 user friends complained a lot about it but I hope they has improved since that
It isn't worth upgrading to s4 from s3 since all software things will easily be portable and software was the only new stuff in the s4, as a big company as Samsung I'm very unimpressed of what they provided us
I would go for the xperia z because of waterproofing, design and it's until now positive chock resistance showed in all drop tests, music playback and it's top specs as Samsung and HTC have,
Second choice would be HTC ONE since HTC has the best screens ever applied on android phones, but the 4ultra pixel thing is actually something that I ain't interested of
Once again sorry for hating but these are my opinions and I respect others opinions

I think we've all heard that before. Settings->Display->Screen Mode/Display Mode->Movie/Cinema = goodbye inaccurate colors. The LTE versions of the S2 and the U.S. S3 don't have that option since they use Adreno GPU's and no option was written for it. Plus the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket has strange screen colors compared to the other models.

So? The camera software is just as important in determining image quality as the hardware, and Sony's image processing has been observed as subpar compared to what Samsung has done on their devices.

Only the the S2, and that was the exception rather than the rule due to a poorly implemented Yamaha chip. The original Galaxy S and the S3 had far cleaner audio output then HTC and Sony's competition at the time. The international One X in particular had some pretty bad audio distortion. The HTC One using the Snapdragon chip is finally up to par with Samsung's low distortion and clean output.

How is swiping your hand above the screen taking more energy than swiping your hand on the screen? I'm not even sure if you're talking about Air Gestures or Floating Touch, which have completely different purposes.

only thing that was good was the eye tracking thing, but that is software and would be easy for me to port while having a front face camera and root

Also Samsung provides system updates that is full of bugs so that they send you hundreds of versions of for example ics or jb, they are not testing everything properly before releasing their updates, I have no clue if this was a problem for s3 users but my s2 user friends complained a lot about it but I hope they has improved since that

While HTC and Sony don't provide any updates so you have bugs AND outdated software. I can't speak for the S2, but the S3 and Note 2 seem to be doing pretty well in the software department.
Only reason for me was the Exynos 5410, as the Snapdragon SoCs are disappointing to say the least. Samsung have still not confirmed which regions are getting the Octa, but based on the pre-orders most countries are going to be getting the s600 variant.
Battery size, RAM, SD Card slot, Screen size, CPU, camera resolution, improved build quality, and weight. I'm getting this phone because the Nexus 4 was a huge disappointment and I lost faith in hoping the next one will be a worthy replacement for my Galaxy Nexus.

Point me to one other smartphone with a 1080p AMOLED display OR ARM's big.LITTLE architecture OR a removable 2600mAh battery OR USB 3.0. I'll wait.

As said I would never choose amoled, even changing the screen calibration the screen will be inaccurate in terms of colors, full HD isn't something to talk about, Samsung isn't the only providing it(almost all manufactured 2013 devices) but I see full HD as something negative, it's almost impossible to see the pixels in HD screens and more pixels would be something unnecessary taking A LOT of battery.
USB 3.0: I'm not even connecting my phone to the pc anymore since I can use it as my pc instead,
loading the battery, HDMI output and DLNA has been the only thing necessary for me in terms of connecting
About camera software, that would be even easier to port but I only need to download Photoshop touch and I would have all these features, and if you haven't seen yet since 2012 Sony released a lot of camera features to the xperia v which is also included in the upcoming and released devices, even thou it was released long before s4 they approve much more features than what the Samsung software provides.
If you are wondering the s3 software has already been ported since long ago and it wouldnt be harder to port the s4 software since it is still running on android.
About the swiping one again, would you look normal to interact with your phone as with humans? Wouldn't it take more energy to swipe your whole hand infront of your screen than with a finger? The finger is also much faster than swiping the whole hand...
About the image quality, old xperia arc was processing much better and sharper pics than all of the s2 models, and if you want to compare xperia z's cam pictures with Samsung's s4 it would be fair since both are 2013 devices, and s3 compared to even my old xperia ion is nothing and don't complain of pixels
About updates it was Sony Ericsson that had update issues, since Sony started they updated even the Ericsson devices, and if you are complaining about the Xperia Play then they wrote why it wouldn't get updated since ics is taking far more performance and the xperia play was a gaming phone
About floating touch, I have had the xperia sola with that feature, I barely used it ands it sucked a lot of battery when used, the galaxy seems to use it all the time in the other hand which will take even more battery along with having the front camera in use all the time tracking you, so that 2600mah won't help you having your phone without charging more than one day
In terms of design, will they ever do something different to other galaxy's? Will they ever change that plastic body which gives the user a cheap feel holding the device? And designed after nature, wtf is that, a plastic stone?
Something still not clear?
Please don't feel offended as I like to argue

1080p Display, 13MP camera, Floating Touch, 5" screen & 4.2.2 (really wanted KLP).
I can't wait to get my mitts on it! & neither can my sis-in-law.
Oh I'm so glad I specified to write what people LIKE otherwise people would've start writing what they don't like and the thread would be a mess.

Well I have atleast learnt that you should see stuff from different perspectives to be able to make the most accurate decisions, anyways sorry if I was disturbing

Well, I really like the design of the S4. It's a smaller Note 2. I think it's the perfect size for me after 4 months of using the Note 2.
I like the new Exynos 5 Octa and I like the screen (want to test Gorilla Glass 3 so badly ).
I will definitely buy it but I need to sell my Note 2 (I wouldn't sell it right now because I don't want to use one month my old Nokia).

I have the same problem. I really want it but I want the Exynos 5 Octa version that will only come out on Q2(2nd Quarter) So I have to wait. In the mean timeI will just drool watching the people who will buy it first.:silly:
Feature I like the most (compared to S3 / Note2) : IR LED, seriously
Will I buy it : no, I'll keep my Note2. It is just an incremental upgrade over the S3 anyways so it doesn't worth the money IMHO.

You're absolutely right, the only thing is, there's a lot of discussion thread out there about people criticizing the SGS4.
Here is my theory on complainers (100% not scientific)
Except for some (really few) real expert, most(not all) S4 haters don't have any valid points. All I see is a bunch of kids with unrealistic expectations and another bunch of frustrated HTC fanboy raiding on Samsung's forum like jealous bullies. (I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, if the hat fits you....)
People think they look more intelligent when they criticize about something(it’s called Illusory superiority). It makes you think they know something that you don't. But the real intelligent people are the one who can see beyond the surface. The SGS4 is an EVOLUTION of KING SGS3.
SGS4 might not be perfect but the fact that some people can't find one single good thing about it, proves that they are totally dishonest and probably iphone or HTC agents.

What? It doesn't matter the technology behind it AMOLED, LCD, etc., two displays calibrated to the same target will have exactly the same colors (except that AMOLED will have a much higher contrast ratio, which is actually a good thing). The S4 comes with aRGB (Adobe RGB) and sRGB (Movie) settings out of the box so you don't even have to do the hard work. There are wide-gamut LCD displays that also won't have accurate colors out of the box because they're not working in the standard sRGB color space. That's what sRGB emulation and color managed applications are for.

Well, that's not a very good argument. Would you consider the S4 superior if it launched with another 720p display?

I'm not talking about colorful filters, I'm talking about the quality of the images written by the phone. Things like color balance, noise reduction, etc. are things Samsung has beaten their competitors at in the past, so there's no reason to believe the S4 won't be at least as good or better than the 13MP Xperia shots. And you can't use Photoshop Touch for things like dual camera recording, the ability to create GIF's with a static background using just the camera app, etc.

If you're using the phone with one hand (which is the only case I can think if in which you'd be moving your finger without moving the rest of your hand...unless you just like to use your phone strangely), then obviously you wouldn't be using the air gestures. I don't see how dragging your finger along the glass has any advantage to moving your hand or finger over the device. The whole hand thing is only for the air gestures, which are more for convenience, whereas floating touch is actually useful like using a mouse with your device.

Really? Reviews called the Ion's camera "average" ( http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_ion_att-review-784p6.php ), and all the top smartphone camera shootouts have the S3/Note 2 either right behind or tied with the iPhone 5, while other devices were noticeably worse.

Excuses. Samsung is still the most consistent Android manufacturer in terms of updates by far. All of their flagships get updates and new features while the confusing distribution across carriers of other OEM devices are left hoping.

So you've used the S4? Sorry Samsung can't do anything about Sony's poor implementation of a feature. I've left Smart Stay on on my S3 when I was running stock and I didn't have any problems with battery life.

Why would they change their design direction? People vote with their wallets, and their devices are outselling competing Android phones by the truckload.
PLEASE someone tell me the S4 has FM radio?
