HTC Droid Incredible Available for Pre-Order: Early Reviews Positive
http://www.pcworld.com/article/1944...able_for_preorder_early_reviews_positive.html
Daniel Ionescu
Verizon's second flagship Droid smartphone, the HTC Incredible, is now available for pre-orders, on a two-year contract for $200. Verizon says the first deliveries should arrive on April 29, if ordered online before 4 p.m. local time by April 28.
The HTC Incredible combines Verizon's network with the latest Google Android release (2.1) wrapped in HTC's Sense UI. The phone runs on a fast 1GHz processor, has a huge 3.7-inch capacitive display and features an 8-megapixel camera on the back. It also comes with 8GB of internal storage, upgradeable up to 32GB via MicroSD cards. No wonder the early reviewers love it.
My PC World colleague Ginny Mies says the HTC Droid Incredible lives up to its name. She found the new smartphone speedy and thinks the display is gorgeous. Mies also liked the HTC Sense UI used on the Droid Incredible (as in not the same interface of the Nexus One), especially the Leap feature, which is an elegant way of handling multitasking and the Friend Stream, a social network aggregator.
Engadget's Joshua Topolsky thinks the Droid Incredible is the "the best Android device that you can purchase in America right now." He claims it is better than the Motorola Droid or the Google Nexus One. Topolsky also found the interface of the HTC Incredible speedy, and the 8-megapixel camera on board can take "stunning photos -- particularly in daylight settings."
Gizmodo's Matt Buchanan also recommends the HTC Incredible as the must-buy smartphone on Verizon. He notes the Incredible is fast indeed, and that the Sense UI is an improvement over the standard Android interface. The camera on the Droid Incredible is rated decent by Buchanan, though he mentions that the phone itself can feel a little cheap and too plasticky.
Boy Genius' review of the HTC Incredible is also favorable, calling the smartphone his "favorite Android device to date." He thumbs up the corporate integration, the social networking elements in the Sense UI and the Web browser. Boy Genius also makes a fair point when he reminds us that due to the use of the HTC Sense UI in the Droid Incredible, Android updates will take longer to trickle down to the device than for Nexus One users.
Over at IntoMobile, Will Park also gives the HTC Droid Incredible a glowing review. He mentions the feature set is "one of the most impressive of any smartphone currently available today," and highlights the fact that due to Verizon's network technology, you can't use voice and data at the same time.
When it arrives starting April 29, the HTC Droid Incredible will have to battle it out with the Nexus One, which is also slated to arrive on Verizon around the same time. Fans of hardware keyboard might want to keep hold on their Motorola Droid for now, as so far there are no new Verizon Android phones with a physical keyboard expected. And if you are up for 4G Android goodness, you can always wait for the Sprint HTC Evo.

The basics are of course a Nexus One with an 8MP camera and Sense pre-installed.
I'm jealous that reports are saying that the soft button weirdness is no more on the Incredible (Engadget), and scrolling around is much smoother. I'm wondering, do you think HTC made a new version of Sense for the Incredible? It's hard to say since you can't look up the version number of Sense on your phone.
Also, 1 year contract is $230 which isn't too bad. And the plans are expensive as hell of course, but my company has a 19% Verizon discount. The only thing I'm worried about is the re-sellability of a CDMA phone. With an unlocked Google phone, re-selling is easy as pie. But can you re-sell a locked CDMA Verizon phone?
Anyway, I'm excited about the Incredible. The more Androids out there, the better! The Droid army is growing, and quickly.
And I can't wait to see what they do with the ad campaign. I'm sad there weren't any Nexus One television ads. So yeah, who's ready to see some badass commercials? DROOOOOOOOOOOOOID
I had the opportunity to play with an Incredible this weekend. I have a friend that is testing it for two weeks. (I am a Nexus One owner)
Here are my thoughts:
1) It is the Nexus One only square.
2) The change in hard button placement SUCKS! The back button is in an odd location.
3) There was no speed increase that I could see in Sense UI
4) If you like Sense UI, buy this phone. If you don't need Sense UI there is no reason to own this.
5) 8MP camera...WOW...There is clear photos, crystal clear photos and then there is an 8MP camera photo. Seriously, I could photograph a wedding with this thing.
The phone was nice. The hard buttons were a real problem for placement. They responded the same as the N1 buttons, no change there that I could tell. The colors of the phone were great and it ran nicely. I was told by the tester the battery is not terrible, but not quite what she expected it to be.
After playing with it for a while if you Love Sense UI or would ever need to photograph the left toe of a bee flying 20 ft away from you, but the Incredible.
It actually is a great phone, but all things considered, I still prefer my N1
Engadget said the Incredible is the best android phone out in America right now, but why?
The 8 megapixel camera? 5 megapixel is more than enough for point and shoot pictures, I mean, the picture gets resized anyway when mms is done converting it. I just don't really see any point in having a high megapixel camera on a cell phone, unless you are really going to print out some posters.
The internal storage is nice, if it will store apps automatically.
And sense ui, well we've been having it for a while now.....
It's probably just me, but I still think they (nexus one, desire, incredible) are the same phone.
What erks, me is they say that it has a better screen scrolling smoothness than the nexus one...but how? It's using the same hardware different software, but essentially the same thing. Can software really make it that much better? Especially knowing how much resources sense uses? I never even thought of my nexus as not scrolling smooth at all, I didn't know it was an issue
Over on Android Central they did an overview of multitouch on the Incredible and showed it didn't have any of the same problems the Nexus has. Dont they use the same screen? Wouldn't that mean that the issues on the Nexus are software?
Here is an AndroidCentral video showing the Multitouch Test on the Incredible and on the Nexus One.. I guess one can assume that the screen hardware on the Incredible is different from N1. If I recall correctly, the Android developers had said that the N1 Multitouch issue was was related to the N1 screen hardware.
EDIT: I guess the poster above beat me to the punch while I was getting the video link.
nexous one
Ya the only thing I'm mad about is i paid around $600 dollars for this n1 and don't get me wrong this phone rocks and i have never had any problems at all no touch screen problems our anything but ya the incredible is coming out and is only $199 after rebate in store and eveyone can get it for that cheap after i paid so much for my phone and its better.
I just don't want a CDMA phone
the contact price is way more then tmobile and i would like sprint instead
I would love the 8mp camera because i own alpha auto detailing in Chico CA and i like taking pics of my cars before and after with my phone and not have to have a camera
http://www.alphaautodetailing.com/
To me that touchscreen becomes a software issue is a good thing. That means we can hope for improvments there instead of just being an is what it is deal were it hardware. The incredible is a great phone and sense is a real value added. Were I married to verizon I would choose it over the N1.

Agreed. This is good news, even if it's just another way for open source solutions to move ahead of greedy corporate models. But the Incredible really does look like a nice phone - which is even better.

Agree with this, too, sort of. Until optics get a lot better, the difference between 5 or 8 mega-pixels really won't matter one iota. However, there is something to be said for the HTC camera software, which by most accounts is a vast improvement over the N1's "pinky".

I'm in the same boat... I was hoping that the "surprise" about the Incredible was going to be that it was a CDMA & GSM WorldPhone like the Verizon Imagio... I was seriously considering switching from AT&T to Verizon, but this might be a show stopper for me as I use my GSM phone when I travel. I was already bothered by the inability of Verizon's CDMA network to support simultaneous voice and data. I also believe that the Incredible won't be able to support docking stations as it lacks the charging contacts at the bottom.

don't listen to that guy from android central. Most of the times he jumps to conclusion without thinking too much.
Unless, incredible goes through a tear down, we cannot say that the screen is different. I do remember Cynogen mentioning that there are settings in kernel that solves the multitouch tracking issue. Droid has them enabled... so most likely Incredible also.
In anycase... incredible is a good phone. Extra RAM and ROM and better Camera, does make this phone better than N1.... how much better... well it depends on how much these 3 things matter to you personally.
having used a few HTC phones... I don't trust HTC for support. They launch new devices left, right and center and start ignoring a device within a year. N1 is google's responsibility. They have to support it for a longer time. Just wait till FroYo launches.. you will get my point.
All I'm waiting to see is one, if the Incredible has a newer version of the Sense UI, and two, assuming that it does, when shall we have a mod for use N1 users.
Honestly, I really won't try the Sense UI until BT works on it as I really don't want to get a "distracted driving" ticket; however, the issues Android already has with BT irks me.
Though like the touchscreen issues, the BT issues are kernel related, so I guess we'll just have to wait until FroYo or perhaps an incremental release between Eclair and FroYo.
I've read the Incredible is using a different touchscreen than the nexus/desire.
FYI the lastest cyanogem 5.0.6 has the softkeys much for accurate.

How is that possible? I thought it was a hardware thing (physical sensors moved up a bit).
No idea, but switching from sense to cyanogen I've stopped worrying about hitting the "line right above the button".

Seriously though, wow. The difference is night and day. It definitely isn't the same screen then, as I really really doubt that's just a software tweak.

Have we heard otherwise though? I'm thinking a hardware teardown is what will prove yea or nay in regards to the same screen as the N1.

Ah ok, just read this.
We might have overreacted when using the word broken to refer to the Nexus One’s multitouch performance, but that post helped us learn the true culprit of the issue. When we took a closer look at HTC’s touch sensors used in their Android phones, we discovered they were using the Synaptics ClearPad 2000.
It turned out there was nothing wrong with the ClearPad sensor. It was working as advertised and was never meant to track the multiple touches that we were expecting. Google is likely to improve the multitouch performance with future software updates, but the Nexus One (and other HTC phones) will always be limited in what they can do with the Synaptics hardware.
HTC must have anticipated Google’s move to a more multitouch friendly Android because new reports suggest the handset maker has upgraded their touch sensors in two upcoming models. Various sources are now reporting that HTC is using the Atmel maXTouch family of touchscreen controllers in the upcoming Droid Incredible and EVO 4G.
The Atmel maXTouch sensors (mxt224) offer superior performance and low power consumption. These new sensors recognize an unlimited number of touches, offer faster response times, and have an excellent signal-to-noise ratio.
Atmel has produced a quick promo video to demonstrate the power of their maXTouch series. A complete series of videos is available on the Atmel site for additional details.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8weBw6M9HHY
Looks like it is indeed a different screen.
N1 uses Synaptics ClearPad 2000
Incredible (and Evo) use Atmel maXTouch
Man, I'm jealous of the Incredible now.
[Edit]: And wow, that promo video is pretty ridiculous lol

Man ain't that a bummer for us N1 owners.
Though having multi-touch is useful more while browsing and such; I really don't play games on my device minus the occasional dabbling with NESoid, and even then I use the trackball and volume up/down buttons.

So i guess htc heard our complaints about the multitouch on the nexus one because they completely ditched that Clearpad 2000 for MaxTouch sensors that have TRUE multitouch.
Here are the Specifications of the maxtouch touch sensors
Unlimited touches
Low power consumption
Fast response — completely redraws screen every 4/1000 of a second (4ms) to eliminate recalibration issues
Excellent signal-to-noise ratio for superior precision — 3x better than competitive products
Superior performance for first-touch response — 3x better than competitive products
Unambiguous, unlimited touch support
Responsive user interface: > 250 Hz report rate for a single touch
Extremely low current consumption: < 1.8 mW in “touch-ready” state
Two touch adjacency of less than 10 mm on a 4.3″ touchscreen
Small footprint with few external components
Supports stylus, fingernails, and gloves
Grip and face suppression functionality: avoids false touches
Size and angle of touch supported
Screen sizes up to 10.2″ are supported by a single chip
Proximity channel support
The maxtouch touch sensors are going to be in the htc devices from now on including the incredible and the EVO 4g! i am soo happy

We get it, we Nexus owners already feel bad enough.. Gosh...
well we can always sell our nexuses its not like its going to lose that much value.
eh I dont think people are going to care about an unlocked phone that can't use 3G with both networks. I can't see resale value of this phone being strong now with all these new phones coming out by HTC.
thats what i always think with all my phones but then ebay never fails me

HTC Incredible here I come! Preordering today!
Will later batches of the Nexus One adopt this new touchscreen?
guess I'll be holding off on that sexy nexy purchase to see what else comes out!
Those bastards! I guess that's why Google didn't want multitouch on the nexus when it first came out. They knew it was going to have problems! Oh, well...decisions, decisions!
Hopefully come september HTC releases a serious powerhouse Android phone for T-mobile so I can use my upgrade on it...otherwise I'll have to dish out full price for another phone or just keep my Nexus...
I refuse to buy a phone less powerful than my N1...ever.
my next phone is either the next iPhone (.0001% chance of happening, I like the microPC feel of Android as opposed to the Handheld Device feel of iPhone OS) WinPho7 (high possibility, but it'll be a companion device to my N1 and probably sold, can't see myself using that as it also seems like a Handheld Device as opposed to a microPC) or the 99% chance that I get a super powerful Android phone....
Even if the incredible included a functional man servant droid with purchase, I would nevah, evah get a CDMA phone or have Verizon as a carrier. I'm still hurting when they was once Bell Atlanic.
Yeah it's nice to see an improved screen, but honestly, if I didn't read about this problem here - I'd never in my life notice it. For everyday uses like pinchToZoom, screen works just fine.
Cross-axis problem will most likely be fixed by software updates soon anyway.
Besides... I'm not digging the Incredible's brick design.
the only time the screen issue even manifests itself is when playing games that require multiple screen touching. I don't play games on my phone tho, so I'm sweet.
I wouldn't trade my Nexus One for an Incredible even if the Incredible was on ATT. I've played with the Incredible and while it has nice things about it, it feels very very cheap and made of plastic. I'll take the Nexus with the screen issue that I never notice over an Incredible that feels cheap. I would notice that every time I picked it up.
about nexous one
i would get an incredible but the plans on verizon are hella
i pay 80 for unlimited everything and verizon is like 120
all stick with my nexous one also with up dated software
thinks will get better
i dont care if my phone cant follow my fingers i love this thing and it works great
I never thought I'd say this, but I was under the impression that Samsung's new lineup would be using their own OS (Bada) rather than Android...I've now heard different and done some snooping.
I've hated Samsung phones, but OMG...

Just take a look at that!!!
I've got another two weeks that I can return my Evo...should I keep it or wait for Galaxy S?
I mean just look at that - less power consumption, AMOLED screen, much faster GPU, faster RAM
I just got this Evo and I feel like something better is already coming out...
Dude I'm in the same boat as you I just got it and I heard about the galaxy s but after doing more research it seems like my evo is already outdated in some aspects by the galaxy s. I heard rumors its gonna be on t-mobile too and I canceled my contract with them to get the evo. But as I said its better only in a few ways. I wanna see reviews for it but by the time the galaxy s is out I won't be able to return the evo. I'm in a dilemma especially after the problems with the evo like battery life subpar 8 megapixel camera and 720p video and the 30 fps cap (that one gets me pissed) .- I wonder what other ppl at xda have to say- imma be watching this thread.
im returning my evo for the samsung galaxy s pro (with qwerty keyboard) for sprint.
I'm also very interested in the Galaxy. I love the Evo but the screen problem has got me thinking twice and I'm not too happy with how thick the Evo feels to me compared to my HD2. I understand that the Galaxy has a CPU with the same clock speed but tests have shown it to perform better along with the GPU as mentioned. The much slimmer profile sounds very good to me and the lack of a camera flash is a letdown but one I could live with.
Samsung is known for not supporting their phones after release but they have confirmed that the Galaxy will be updated with Froyo. On 2G the battery is rated for talk time longer than the iPhone 4G and is of course replaceable. Also 16GB built-in + add a 32GB micro sd card and you have more storage than nearly any smartphone.
Here is the best review (9 pages) I've found on the Galaxy:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9000_galaxy_s-review-478.php
true the galaxy s has some great specs..
but you might want to do a little research on the Samsung support on thier phones. from what I have seen... it is a very big issue. they tend to push out great spec phones and then move on to the next phone to develop; and forget the old.
some times it is not just the specs. how the parts add and give you over all total performance. From reading on other phones.. (ex: hero vs moment).
But it's a Samsung...

That's better than htc who puts out phones with glaring problems and then stops supporting them. I haven't had an htc Pune since the tilt. I was hoping they had changed so I could get an evo, but apparently they haven't. I'm liking the galaxy s pro right now.

True, but HTC's record is just as pathetic.
We'll see when we will have a bug fix release and maybe in 10 months Froyo...
The Galaxy is nice, but if you like the developing and deep hacking and customizing.
HTC is the way to go.
yeah you guys are right - i know samsungs phones tend to sound good on paper and turn out not that great after all. happened a couple of times before. wanted to love their phones, but just couldnt.
besides the galaxy s looks pretty ugly compared to the evo
ok is it me or does this thing REALLY look like an iphone clone? Don't get me wrong the specs are good, but that Touchwiz overlay is a huge negative for me. In addition the only advantages I see the Galaxy S as having is the internal storage (which doesn't matter to me because I haven't even filled up my 16gb card half way yet, so an extra 8/16gb of storage doesn't excite me), the screen resolution (I'd rather have less resolution and a larger screen though), and the processor (same clock speed but faster gpu, seeing as I don't do an extensive amount of gaming on my phone I couldn't careless about that. Not to mention the gaming I do with games such as Gangstar and Nova, which are 3d environments, run perfectly fine). The disadvantages for me would be: lack of 4g (I get great 4g coverage here in Atlanta and also get good speeds on it 4-8megs), lack of camera flash, does not come with flash (you will have to wait until froyo, or install a custom rom to do any browsing that involves flash), and below average speakerphone. The phone looks like a decent phone but it does not have enough advantages for me to make a switch. Just my opinion.
I'll pass on the samsung. I'm really not digging their skinning either. With their post support issues I think I'd rather deal with apple and the iphone or motorola and their new high end droid. That said I'm not going to go and get raped by verizon, I don't want to get raped by at&t either and I'm happy with my evo.

I agree about the looks! It looks way too much like an iPhone and the UI screenshots don't make it look any better. But have you seen the long demo video on YouTube? I forget which one it was, but I have to admit I was pretty impressed by the way it all flowed and this is coming from a guy who loves HTC Sense.
For someone like me, the extra 16GB would mean that I could ditch my iPod 160GB Classic and just have one device (I like to keep all my music and audiobooks on one device). Also reported by a few different blogs, the Galaxy screen is better and the hummingbird is reported too as being faster than the snapdragon in our Evos. And I guess I'm alone in this, but the super slim profile is a huge plus to me. But that back cover is pretty ugly. I'd really just like to demo this thing myself, with my Evo in hand and then decide. I'd also like to do the same with the iPhone 4G. These devices coming out on different dates, sure does making the choice making that much harder.........

I keep reading different carriers. Samsung has said they want the device to be on every carrier in every country and so if that holds true then it will be on all but my question is who will have it first late this month or next month as reported. I have seen some screenshots, showing T-Mobile account data on a Galaxy screen, but now I'm hearing Verizon and ATT as well.......

I'm with you all the way on it, i like how motorola designed the droid X but not their software, and I wouldn't get a motorola anyways.
Help me justify to myself that I should NOT return my EVO and buy a DROID X. I do love my EVO, I have ZERO regrets about it replacing my iPhone, nor do I regret buying it instead of an iPhone4. I don't really want to return it, since I'm lazy and I'll have to park my number somewhere for 2 weeks and put up with a crappy phone, but my analysis gives me the strong impression that the Droid X is a significant improvement for my needs.
I was doing a quick Pro/Con analysis and came up with a lot on the DroidX side and not much on the EVO side. But the EVO advantages are very very big.
(BTW, I have in the past put custom ROMs on my WinMo devices, but I don't know if I ever will with these Android devices. They're so good stock I'm not sure it's needed or compelling.)
EVO pros
4G (ten times faster according to my tests)
Kickstand
Cheaper plan (We assume)
Unlimited Data (It's not clear the specific terms and condition of Verizon's data plan)
Frontfacing Camera (which is almost irrelevant to me)
DROIDX pros
Sharper Screen (say the reviews)
24bit color screen vs the EVO's 16bit color screen
Physical Buttons (I got used to hitting the front button, not top, to wake it up, with my iPhone, also leads to less accidentally pressed buttons)
Works in Metro (DC area)
Faster processor (there seems to be debate about this)
Noise Cancelling Mic
Better WiFi? (EVO has noticably shorter WiFi range in my house than my iPhone did, not just bars-wise but experientially)
Froyo DATE promised (summer 2010)
Multitouch keyboard
8GB vs 512MB on-unit storage
16GB SD included
Lighter by 6oz
No 30fps limit (stock)
Help me see what's better about the EVO over the DroidX.

Uh... The EVO only weighs 6oz...
I'd move to the droid except for one thing that is a huge deal breaker for me.
Locked boot loader. Means no custom roms. Means it is unlikely to see a lot of developer support for the device.
I've been swaying back and forth with this also, but I'm really leaning on keeping the EVO.
My opinion:
Cons:
-Capped 2D & 3D, meaning choppy game play and graphical animations. (I play games but is it that important?)
-Uneasy "cheated" feeling HTC has always given us (not giving us the right drivers for graphics or other hardware)
Pros:
-Sprint has better rates/plans
-Front facing camera
-4G, by the time Verizon gets 4G, it will be time for a new phone.
-Easily customized (root, custom roms, etc)
I'm a developer, and I enjoy hacking away at the EVO. The hardware is just as good as the Droid X, except HTC doesn't always maximize the hardware. That's where customizing the software here at XDA will help.
Droid X, who knows when they will get root, and even then, will they ever be able to flash custom roms?
I say if you like your EVO, and games aren't that important, stay with the EVO.
If you want to go to the Droid X just because it's got "better" specs, well, you'd be getting a new phone every 3 months...
@TKardinal
I'm in the same boat as you. Liking my Evo, want to stay with Sprint, but also want to make sure I don't miss out on what might be a better device for me. (while still within in my 30 day return window)
With regard to the keyboard, couldn't this be brought over to the Evo? I mean there's nothing hardware-wise that would allow the Droid X to have a multitouch keyboard... right?
The physical button thing is a biggie for me for the same reason you mentioned: I really hate reaching up to power button on the Evo. I would LOVE to be able to turn the screen on with a button the bottom/front. But with capacitive buttons I just don't think this is possible.

24 bit color is less efficient on the processor than 16 bit. We live in a 32-bit world and 16 bit color is handled much better. Also you aren't really getting 24-bit color, they say it's 24-bit but it's really only 18-bit color and they away the other 6 bits.
I would post the images, but I'm lazy, but long story short you can't even tell the difference between 16-bit and 18-bit (which is what the 24-bit really is).
Also locked bootloader on the droidx means you might NEVER get a rooted phone, and even if you do all the devs will be over here cuz the evo is much more open to modding so that's where they will naturally migrate (and the nexus).

Sharper Screen (say the reviews)- Evo's screen is already amazing, how much better can it get?
24bit color screen vs the EVO's 16bit color screen- See response above
Physical Buttons (I got used to hitting the front button, not top, to wake it up, with my iPhone, also leads to less accidentally pressed buttons)- This is pure preference. Physical buttons are things of the past IMO.
Works in Metro (DC area)- As in Sprint has no coverage there?
Faster processor (there seems to be debate about this)- They are both 1GHZ.
Noise Cancelling Mic- Had one on my Nexus One and didn't notice a difference to be honest.
Better WiFi? (EVO has noticably shorter WiFi range in my house than my iPhone did, not just bars-wise but experientially)- HTC just updated the software that improves the range. This is software related, not hardware.
Froyo DATE promised (summer 2010)- HTC has also said the Evo will be getting Froyo but we already have a almost perfect port of it now.
Multitouch keyboard- Already ported to the Evo
8GB vs 512MB on-unit storage- Yes more storage is nice. +1 Droid X
16GB SD included- You can upgrade your 8GB on the Evo to a 16GB for cheap.
Lighter by 6oz- As someone else said, the Evo weighs 6oz
No 30fps limit (stock)- You said it, "stock". Many people don't have 30FPS anymore, its not permanent.

So based on all of that, AFAIK the Droid X only has 1 advantage that the Evo does not and that is the integrated 8GB of space. That vs having a front facing camera, 4G network/capability (Droid X isn't compatible with Verizon's upcoming LTE), and as other people have mentioned, support from the community for ROMs,etc and the Evo is still in my eyes better then the Droid X.
Get No lock to turn on the screen using the volume rocker.. Not quite the front button of the phone, but better than the top power button.
Things I cant get over on the Droid X..
The hump!!!
No front facing cam
No kickstand
More locked down than necessary.
Enjoy either phone....
I have only had two HTC phones--the Touch Diamond and the EVO. I never heard any QA issues with the Touch and yes, there have been a few build issues with the EVO. But I can tell you this--I have about 15 years experience with Motorola hardware and my bet is that there will be as many, probably more, flames about the build quality of the Driod X as there have been with the EVO. So if you switch, be prepared for it.

Let's not forget about the CPU advantage. That may end up being pretty considerable. Also, the no 30fs cap is nothing to sneeze at either.

Why do people keep bringing up moot points?
The CPUs are comparable.
The 30FPS cap is gone, and before anyone brings up the fact that you have to root/rom it before it goes away. YOU'RE ON XDA. This has been taken care of and with enough time will be fixed perfectly by devs. Can you say that if something is horribly wrong on the Droid X? Good luck if Motorola doesn't feel that it's necessary.
Every phone is going to have pros and cons so just answer these questions. They're done in terms of importance, at least to me when I choose a phone.
1. Which one do you think looks better?
2. What do you do on the phone?
3. Do you care about open development or are you content with stock roms?
4. Do you care about how much you're paying each month?
But when it comes down to it. There is only one question you really need to answer.
WHICH ONE DO YOU LIKE MORE?
There have been so many threads about this in both the EVO forum and the Droid X forum but it comes down to a ridiculously simple answer. People are going to keep saying the same pros and cons that you probably already know, so just have a brain and decide for yourself.

I fully admit that I'm no CPU expert, but the overwhelming consensus that I'm reading says that the this OMAP chip is far more powerful than the snapdragon, particularly in the graphics department. I'd love to have someone provide some details on why that's incorrect though, can you?
As for the 30FPS... A couple of points: First, the issue isn't really "fixed" yet. Will a well-tested, stable rom come out eventually with the 30fps cap removed? I'm sure it will. But when will that happen? The point is, I could have a Droid X and be rid of that thorn sooner rather than later.
Secondly, keep in mind that there are lots of us who are not interested in flashing ROMs. I did this all the time with my old windows mobile devices, and I have lots of respect for the devs here who create these fixes, but on a brand new phone I don't want to mess with that. If the phone was a couple years old, and the official updates from HTC are end-of-life'd, then sure I might take a crack at loading a custom ROM. But probably not before.
Edit: I should mention that I AM a relatively happy EVO owner, but I think it's reasonable to debate the pros and compare it to the "other" Android super-phone. Putting the carrier differences aside, the question is whether or not the hardware differences are worth making a switch.

His two main points are:
1. The Droid X does not have a separate GPU - its PowerVR SGX530 GPU is part of the SoC (system on chip) architecture.
The EVO does not lack a GPU - its AMD Z430 GPU is part of the SoC.
2. Benchmarks are irrelevent and inaccurate and most ppl don't even know what they measure (especially tech reviewers). Read his posts, they are a.good read.

Like I said, if you think the 30FPS cap is a deal breaker then just get a Droid X. Just keep in mind that there is something wrong with the Droid X, if Motorola doesn't feel the need to change/fix it. What are you going to do? Dump the Droid X? Because we all know, every phone has/will have problems. Also, even new phones benefit from custom roms because most phones are aimed at the general public while most people who are a little more tech savvy (majority on XDA) don't care for certain things especially when they know it hurts performance in other areas. (IE: Sense, Blur, Sprint Apps, etc. etc.) If having a top of the line phone is important to you, like getting a Droid X over an EVO (which the Droid X is superior in some aspects, I don't think anyone will argue that) then why are you holding onto the phone for a couple years and only then using custom roms to improve it?

I will definitely go read your links, thanks for that.
I'm not interested in always having the most advanced phone, it's more that I just bought the EVO and since another phone is going to be released within my 30-day return period, I should at the very least evaluate it and make sure I'm not missing out on something better. That's all. Obviously a lot of this debate is based on what's on paper. Once it's released we'll know how well it really performs, if there are any show-stopper flaws, etc, etc.

The same GPU that powers the Droid X, powers the 3GS. Seems a little dated to me. The hardware itself is comparable, only thing that is the biggest obstacle for the Evo is software and since we have some of the best devs working on this device, those obstacles will be removed.
This phone hasn't even been out for a month and look at the insane progression that the devs have done. Seriously. You won't find that on a Motorola phone.

No problem, and sorry if I'm coming off a little rude in my comments by the way. I agree that it's good to debate the pros and cons but this is already the 12591259105215th thread on the subject. I think this type of thread is getting ridiculous especially when there is little to debate, because like you said all of it is coming from the sheets.
Yeah, you can return it during your 30-day return period but if you test out the Droid X and don't like it. Verizon charges $35 to cancel and I'm pretty sure there is a wait period before Sprint allows you to sign back up. So just hopping around isn't exactly an option for most.
hello guys,
i'm currently not sure about what i'm thinking, my Desire HD order will probably arrive at 15th November, and the new phone is going to be announced at the 8th... so should i cancel my order and wait for the new Samsung phone? or keep waiting??
i dont even want to wait for the releasing period for the new Samsung, which i think i may get it by December???!!!!
oh God
im in the exact situation! but this is what i plan on doing.
Keep my order, get the desire and play around with it. I'll see what Samsung announce, if it's much better and a worthy upgrade from the DHD then i'll put it up on eBay. Im sure i won't make much of a loss selling it there. Some people pay crazy money
But ultimatly what's most important to me is root, and if the devs here can't crack the DHD's protection, then i'll have little choice but to sell and get the N2.
Wren nexus one was released the phone was available the same day as the announcement. There has been talk that google will be selling it direct again this time round though I m not convinced it ll be on the same day. However, there shouldn't be long wait like DHD.
Personally I m not sure if it ll be a better phone, as I hated everything there is about Galaxy S. It ll basically be Gingerbread vs almighty DHD on Froyo, assuming HTC won't be bothered to update DHD to gingerbread any time soon. I m sticking with DHD for now unless Samsung has real trick up it's sleeve this time. I find it hard to convince myself to put up with another dreadful Galaxy S alike experience.
Sigh.. Only if HTC is more ethusiatic about it's software upgrade and Motorola is more keen about Android...
Sansung's got really nice hardware(only nice in figures) but their system craps, will think about it if it will get a none plastic-like surface and system designed by google itself.
So far the news ive read tell that in terms of hardware its not good, it will be more of a developer test machine since it brings 2.3.
I think Google is committing suicide by letting Samsung handle Nexus Two
Speculation so far:
Code:

- Stock Google Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)- 1.2 GHz processor (mostly overclocked Hummingbird or may be different model)
- 4 inch AMOLED display (Could be Super-AMOLED version)
- 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and HD video capture, front-facing camera
- 512 MB RAM, 16 GB internal storage
- Support for multiple carriers
- All the usuals like WiFi, Bluetooth, 3.5 mm headset jack, etc.
- Outer casing is a mix of metal and plastic materials
[/FONT][/COLOR]
I had a Nexus that was stolen from me, god how i miss that phone
As a replacement i am getting the Desire HD through the insurance i had on the Nexus.
However having been on the gravy train that is Android Dev phones (G1 & Nexus one) i must say that the Desire HD doesn't seem to be a worthy upgrade from the nexus, i was pretty psyched in the beginning about the Desire HD but the more i learn about it the less it appeals to me.
The screen isn't Amoled; the touch sensor isn't unlimited like i assume it will be on the Nexus two (Galaxy S :Atmel maXtouchsensor),
The battery is not 1500mha - honestly even if the cpu is much more power efficient than the old generation cpu's why not throw in a bigger battery?
And no front facing camera which in itself isn't a deal breaker but cmon, its not like we are buying budget phones here anyways...
As already mentioned possibly only one software upgrade during it's life time which to be honest is quite average however Google Dev phones always has the latest & greatest.
Not to bash on the Desire HD, but honestly its just a EVO with a new CPU minus the frontfacing camera and kickstand.
I will most probably test out the Desire HD and and change to Nexus Two if it seems better in some of these aspects.
Evo 4G is prettier, i would change from a DHD to a Evo 4G or incredible HDin a snap if it wasnt not being able to use it in europe. Why HTC only makes good phones for the US ?! Why are we treated like **** !?
you might as well ask why did the us implement WCDMA or 4G while the rest of the world is stil 3.5G (even in Japan..i think)??
they cater to the specific market needs.
same as Japanese mobile carriers, they only produced their phones for their markets in consideration only.
which is why they are highly sought for

Europe get the release first for nearly all HTC phones.
the US get rebranded versions. they also get some different phones because they use rubbish CDMA technology.
people hating on the desire hd, if you own one/owned one and played with it and made the comments fair enough. until then you have no right what so ever to "review" a phone you haven't used.
i own one for over a week and i have to say its a great phone.
the phone does have root,be it temporary at the moment but things have to start from somewhere. i don't see the average user like some people here trying to obtain root, but moan and demand it.
i don't see the nexus two being an all awesome phone. the nexus one's bootloader got unlocked with 1 click because it was a development phone but it voided the warranty. how many people are going to risk that with a samsung built device?

absolutely my thinking. I already have the DHD, but if the protection cannot be unlocked, and the specs of the "Nexus two" are OK/confirmed, I have not choice as to sell the DHD. Having had the Nexus One (and still owning it), I am no longer tolerating manufacturers lock-downs! That is a no-go for me nowadays.
Plus: I HATE the speaker on the DHD - (same XXX as on the nexus one). And I really have a bad feeling about these plastic covers on the DHD (only a matter of time until they wear out).
If the "nexus two" has a decent design and better materials (less plastic than the iphone-look-alike Galaxy S), my decision is made...
Yes that's true but im talking in terms of quality, look at the Incredible HD (desire hd for US) and look how perfect it is compared with the Desire HD

Review ?! What the freaking hell, im talking in terms of product Quality/Design, from every single review and comment ive read theres flaws with the design of the Desire HD, look at EVO 4G and Incredible HD they are brilliant, the EVO 4G came up before the Desire HD any decent company would grab their design and improve it, not make it more ridiculous.
Ive ordered a Desire HD since the day 2 of its announcement then amazon screwed their customers and now im waiting on handtec 3rd shipment so you cant say im a anti Desire HD... freaking fanboys are starting already...

I've had the DHD for 5 days and to be honest I'm underwhelmed. I have the regular Desire and the DHD isn't that big of an upgrade. I'm not saying it's a bad phone, just that it's only a little better than the Desire. except speaker is no better than the Desire, infact I find it slightly quieter. Big screen is great if that's what you want, but AMOLED on Desire is more vivid an there seems to be a little motion blur at times.
No problem with proxomity sensor or plastic covers here btw.
I'm going to sell my DHD and wait for something a bit better.

OK - please share what did you expect DHD to be? Please tell me what evolutionary leap could be achieved in about six monts? And enough of the AMOLED thing! HTC are absolutely right not to put themselves dependant on one supplier that also happens to be their competitor. And when (not if) they are forced to switch to another technology, they will have to take the blame for it. Fool me once - shame on you, fool me twice - shame on me. You get bigger screen, more RAM and ROM, better camera, next gen CPU... what else can be desired in six months of evolution? 2GHz CPU? Not gonna happen! I personally would like from the phone to cook and clean, but that also woun't happen .
This would fall under "General" or "Q&A" but we all know that no one clicks on those tabs anymore, in addition this has a little to do with development. Seeing that the mt3gs is ancient in smartphone years and that our major developers have moved on, I figured we could start a comparison thread. Before I start I would like to thank all the teams that worked hard for all of us to better enjoy the "slide"; Team Cyanogen, Arrayray, CR, CM, Guitarist, Highly Medicated so on and so on. (if I missed anyone its not personal your work is also appreciated.) With that being said its time to discuss what's next..
I myself am almost due for an upgrade and would like the communities opinion on where to go next. Right now I have two options MyTouch 4G Slide versus HTC Sensation. So far the advantage of mt4gs is the awesome camera software and hardware, but lacks in the screen section which is not qHD. I'm open to discussion and opinions, also if there is any other phone you'd like to mention please do so.
It would be nice to get a mt4gs since a lot of our devs went that route and I'd be able to keep following them but I seen some nice development in the Sensation community as well. Any opinions?

I have seen them both and I have to say the sensation is one of the best phones I have ever seen. It has a beautiful design and a really clear camera with 1080p HD camera. If you ask me, id go with the sensation. But that's only my opinion, in the end its all down to personal perspective. Whether you like a slide out keyboard or you like having a large screen. It all depends what you like.

Agreed, on both posts, I do have a long time before I can upgrade (got this as a gift) but i figure I will jus pay cash for one from like amazon.com or something! and The Sensation is Absolutely hands down the best Android Phone to date! HOWEVER, while I am still a slide user, i will develop for it proudly!
Just got a 4g slide today and am liking it the way it is so far. I HATED sense on my 3g slide but Sense 3.0 is much better IMO. Camera is awesome as well. I need the hard keyboard so my choice was easy.

Thank you guys for your opinions and input. I went and demo'd both phones today and I found something interesting.. the HTC Sensation is shipped with 2.3.3 while the mytouch 4G slide ships with 2.3.4. When I checked for an update on the sensation nothing showed up. Im sure they'll have the update soon

Thx for the mention, but i feel like all i did was get people's toes wet concerning gingerbread with sense. Really wish i had time to do more for everyone. Thankfully team medicated worked hard to bring a working gingerbread rom for us.
As far as a new phone, its almost scary to buy a new phone knowing something better will be out in 6 months or so and we're stuck with that phone for another 18 months. Personally, i've looked so many times at other phones that i think the store reps know my face by now lol. I just cant bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars to get with the hottest handset. Its tough, but waiting till im due for a full discount on a new handset. Im really intreaged to see what google's next handset is going to be. It should be out by mid 2012. I just hope its better than the nexus s. Lets face it, nexus one blew us away, but the nexus s was a bit of a let down. A beautiful handset, i just expect a google phone to be the best out there.
Personally, at the start, i really hated the Slide and was getting disappointed that i even bought it. It's only thanks to developers here that had the SalsaSlide made possible that i've actually started enjoying using it.
As for a new phone, i don't run after technology, i've learned that it's a losing race and if my phone keeps working, then i see no reason of upgrading it just for saying i have the latest. What can i say, i'm not an apple fanatic that will rush to spend hundreds just to get the exact same phone in white
Anyway, if i'll be fully honest with you guys, once they get Android on the Fuze as native OS. I'd probably be switching to it, so instead of upgrading i'd be downgrading
Guitarist you deserve to be credited, in my opinion you introduced gingersense to the slide which gave devs the jumpstart to want to incorporate sense back into roms. Thanx again. Undoubtedly there will always be another smarter phone that's just how it goes. I also understand Sefy also, it is not only money draining to keep up with the latest handset but it is a bit cliche for that matter. (my secondary is still an iPhone 3gs, never upgrading my Apple handset)
Speaking of phones dropping in 2012, I stumbled upon an article earlier that's a game changer for Google. Google has agreed to buy Motorola mobility for 12.5 billion. Here's the article

I've been using a G2x since June. I do miss the slide's community though. Not that it should really affect what phone you get.
I decided that now that I have a phone with not just one, but two 1ghz cores I can rest, haha. I hate looking at the G2x forums though, at least general anyways. It's full of trolls and rudeness, lol.
I kind of wish I had stuck it out a little longer and got the mt4gs and feel like I upgraded rather than just went to a new phone completely.
It IS fast though. I got lucky enough to not get one of the terrible ones.
Wow I felt like this a while ago and I am torn about getting a new phone when there are a lot of phones out there and its hard to choose what to get next. Mt4gs looks like a great phone and might jump ship to it.

The developing community for the Slide slowed down a long time ago. I stopped really even checking back, haven't logged in for ages. I'm due for an upgrade on September 16th, and I'm DEFINITELY going for the HTC Sensation. The screen is bigger, super high resolution, 1080p video shooting, and better battery life. I liked having a physical keyboard with my Slide, but it is cumbersome as it makes the phone significantly thicker and heavier. On an MDPI device I would go for the hard keyboard, but on HDPI, ESPECIALLY qHD 4.3" screens, I have no problem typing on the screen's keyboard. It's worth the thinner and lighter phone. Plus, on the Sensation, almost the entire front of the phone is screen space. The mts4g seems to have a thick frame around the screen, especially on the top of it, which I don't like. Yeah, sure, the camera features of the mts4g are certainly attractive, but at least for me, since my Slide camera has been broken ever since I got the phone and I was never that big of a camera user to begin with, the Sensation is a MUCH better bet. Both phones are the same price.
I had the mt3gs since It's release, after much thought and consideration, I decided that like this forum it was dead, so I upgraded with the myTouch 4G Slide. I love it, the keyboard, the screen, the look and feel. It's just like I ran my mt3gs through an update machine and the MT4GS was the result. Although it doesn't have the giant 4.3 inch touch screen and while it is not a not a super light phone, I have had a great experience so far.
The camera, let's start there, fast, clear, macro settings better than any phone I've seen so far, don't believe me, my Google+ profile has a pic of a mosquito I took with no zoom. (Link on profile) the sweep shot, the HDR multi shot that layers different white balance shots up to get great definition and color in bright light, (backlit pics as well). The action shot and shutter (as long as the camera app is already open) is just as fast as they claim, but if not held very still can be just slightly blurred, but better still than most mid grade digital cameras on the market. The only thing keeping this camera from being an actual replacement it the lack of an optical zoom. Oh and night shots....they are pretty nice as well.
The screen, 3.7" inches, Super LCD, is crisp and clear, with resolution that has honestly impressed me. The best part? You have a screen that's big enough to enjoy watching videos on and you don't feel like your gonna break your thumbs trying to reach the screen's extremities. Although I do wish it was just a little larger when gaming.
The processor, a 1.2GHz Dual Core, Snapdragon, is a beautiful change from the 600mhz of the mt3gs, finally games and apps that none of us could enjoy like Gun Bros, Need for Speed, Dungeon Defenders, and Google Earth are smooth and flowing. Even Quadrant standard's video benchmarks are now enjoyable to watch.
The keyboard, which is the reason anyone wants the phone is quite different from it's predecessor's or any others I've seen or used. The buttons are almost flat and press very easily, almost too easily at first but after about a week of using it, it's almost a pleasure to use, just be careful of the back button when typing the letter 'M', I have lost several Facebook posts, even part of this post so far.
Sense 3.0 is beautiful but it and it's components eat up 3GB of the MT4GS 4GB of on-board storage and around 40% of its 768MB of RAM. And T-Mobile's removal of the 7 screen option and lockscreen shortcuts make it slightly frustrating.
Kid Zone is also a big annoyance, while it is a neat alternative lockscreen geared toward kids is built into sense and not exactly what I would make for a child.
The '4G' aspect is not quite all its claimed to be, in Pittsburgh averaging 3-4 Mbps, but is quite a bit more reliable than I would have thought. The GPS is fast to lock, till rooted it seems, and compass and multiple rotation sensors make it crazy accurate and very sensitive. This makes it great for gaming, almost as good as a gyroscope, if not slightly better in some aspects. And the Bluetooth 3.0 makes file pushes fast and simple. And the usb transfers at around 4MB/s making video upload easy.
The over all feel of the phone is awkward at first being just slightly thicker than the HTC glacier(MT4G) yet not as thick and stocky as the mt3gs, it has grown on me more everyday, and I am very happy I made this choice.
My over all rating of this phone would be a 4.5 out of 5, it is a beautiful piece of technology, and should be relevant for a while to come.

Neanderthal, thanx for that beautiful review and sharing your personal experience with the mt4gs. I also must admit after I demo'd the handset I've been wanting it more and more.
Speaking of other phones, does anyone know if the Nokia N9 will work on tmobile? It's a sick piece of equipment and IS the best camera for smart phone. The UI is effin dope and from specs and reviews this phone is killer. Any help will be appreciated .. thanx again for all the input. If there are any other phones out there please post. You could always wait it out for the samsung hercules, nexus prime and htc ruby to show up. As far as i know they should all be hitting the market fairly soon. Just a suggestion

I just replaced my wifes MTS (Warranty) with a MTS in red, she loves the phone with CM7 on it and she likes the keyboard all in total I have replaced the 2 mytouch slides 5 times through t-mobile due to hardware failure (Camera, Front buttons, and keyboard issues)
I however just ordered a G2x and it should be here today, I'm not going anywhere though, I have always liked the MTS though it has not been a reliable phone CM7 Makes it so much better. One of the reasons I got a G2x is it has Vanilla android so I will get updates faster (More likely than phones with Sense)

With the release of sense 3.0 it wouldn't surprise me if phones with sense got updates sooner. Either way thanks your input. Let us know how that G2X goes for you

As a fellow G2x member, I say welcome! However to the updates, I'd have to say... Nope. We don't quite have Vanilla android... We waited a few months for Gingerbread and when we got it, it was "half-baked" and still not exactly Vanilla.
But the phone is a beast. Do enjoy it, cause I know I do.
And there's always rooting and roms.
