you know i was just reviewing the tp2 section of xda, the android section i should say. i see they have a port of ubutnu for the phone now. i guess i just don't get as to why you would want it? sorta the same with us hero users wanting to try out debian on our phones? whats the point of it?
if i were a touchpro2 "and i was very briefly" user id want a full port of android like the vogue users had. i mean what zen, dzo & mission were able to do to that dying phone to breath new life into it is outstanding and deserves total respect and applause from all of us.

For anybody that doesn't want to have to read this sentence 10 times to understand it, here's a punctuated and readable version:
If I were a Touch Pro 2 owner, and I actually was for a very brief period, I'd want a full port of Android, much like the Vogue users had.
I don't get what you are trying to say....
@ubuntu, the TP2 has a physical keyboard so ubuntu would be much more practical then on the hero.
@android port for TP2, ummmmm who cares about the TP2? I used dzo's android port for a long time and I greatly respect everything that they have accomplished. It truly is amazing.
I agree.

The sole reason I didn't get the TP2 was the fact it was running WinMo.
WinMo has to be the worst phone UI ever, why the heck would anyone want to use a stylus to navigate the UI. Nevermind the fact I've never heard one positive review of Windows Mobile as far as speed was concerned.

sorry i was sick as hell yesterday and still am. thanks mr grammar nazi's!
my point was having a port of ubuntu is stupid IMO, id rather have a fully working android port that could be flashed to nand like the vogue users have. got it now?
I dunno if I had a TP2 and then upgraded to something else but still had my old TP2 laying around. I would most likely put something like ubuntu on it for ****s and giggles.
fixxxer,
wow, you've graduated from useless personal opinion posts to starting whole new useless personal opinion threads. Way to go man, you're really making progress. Congratulations.
I might have a couple ideas as to why someone would attempt to run ubuntu, debian or just about anything else on their phone:
1. just because
2. it's a challenge just to see if you can do it
3. It's fun
4. did I mention "just because"
Just a heads up: your frustration over not having the skills to do these things yourself is showing...muffintop

what crawled up your ass? what just because i posted an opinion about that app you helped create? the point of a message board is to create, help and debate. all i did was give an opinion, there is no reason for you to get all worked up. it's not like i said it was useless.
Actually, man, if you leave out the first and last paragraphs and just read his list, he answered your question perfectly. The fact that you don't get it says s lot. This is, at its base, a community of hackers (or hacker wannabes, like me). Half the reason we do ANYTHING with our phones is because we can. Just for the sheer unadulterated HELL OF IT! Kinda like choosing to do themes the hard way yourself, rather than using metamorph. The fact that some of what we do makes our phones more functional is sometimes almost secondary to the feeling of having got your hands dirty and done something yourself. It is the same thing that drives people to DIY rather than just buying the finished product at the store...even when you might have saved a buck and some time just dropping the cash.

In an attempt to bring this thread back around to topic and stop some of the bickering:
The reasons I see for doing something like installing Debian or Ubuntu on a phone are pretty simple:
1. To see what is possible
2. To find out what your are capable of
3. To find out what the device is capable of
4. To do something that no one else around you has done
In other words, why not?

Sometimes the purpose is the trip not the destination. That's how I feel about hacking our phones, anyway. 90% of the time, I don't really need to be able to access my desktop and take control of it through VNC, but the fact that I can makes me really happy. I don't need to be able to stream HD movies on my phone, but the fact that I will be able to with the evo has me excited. What color flashes on the screen when i tap an app doesn't really make a flying fvck in the long run, but I like the glassy blue, so I rip into every rom I download and change it. To me, that is the why that answers your initial question. To someone for whom the end functionality is the ultimate goal, the this may not make any sense, but to someone else who enjoys the process of creation and tinkering, the opposite might be true. And in a community of devs and hackers, i think you are likely to find as many or more of the latter than the former.

@all:
There seems to be a significant amount of animosity of late in the Android related forums. I'm not certain as to why this is, nor do I want to hear any reason for justification; what I do know is that it is unacceptable.
XDA is about bringing together folks who have similar passions about mobile technology. As the forum is accessed worldwide, you will encounter all types of folks from different walks of life; some of these folks will be extremely technical, others not. In all cases, it is the responsibility of all members to remain respectful of one another. We all have different opinions, we do not all have the same level of knowledge, and some folks are looking to feel like they are learning while trying to contribute.
Show maturity and professionalism by responding with helpful and constructive information. There is absolutely no reason to respond in a rude tone or to make someone feel stupid ... it is not constructive and serves no purpose.

Android Running On The iPhone
Yea yea yea I know its a iPhone, different OS, blah blah blah...But I figured that was pretty cool.
What does this have to do with HD2 Android development? This is what the "General Discussion" category is for.
well gee,... dont read it if it bothers you so much. How much sense does it make to flame him for this?
My guess he is saying that if they got it on the iPhone the Devs should hurry up and get it going on the HD. Well if you would like it sooner then help out in some way other just starting a thread asking for it.

Yeah, it just irritates me when people act like the developers should have it ported already and don't show appreciation for all the hard work and progress they have made on it. They are making GREAT progress and are spending their time doing it for free. By the title of this thread and it's content, it sounds like just what you said... that the iphone has it now so it should be done for the HD2 by now. I have been replying to most of the many threads started about the HD2 android/linux port and try to explain just how much work it actually takes. People seem to think it's just like cooking a rom or that having an android phone with similar specs should make it an easy port... but it's much more complicated than that.
Oh I know that. That is one of the reason most of my stuff never gets released.

So basically, the iPhone has been out for like 3 or 4 years and one guy has a port.
I'm one of the few who aren't impressed with Android. I find WinMo 6.5 to be much smoother, faster and overall better than even the best Android phone out right now. So I hope HTC doesn't turn the HD2 or HTxx into a Google based phone.
On top of all that the linux developement on iphone has been going on for a while now too. The fact that its on the phone is cool but its still in alpha status. HD2 just started so yea.... def cool to see that though.

I just wonder...
Isn't the whole OS supposed to be absolutely customizable??
I understand apps like phone and contacts must still exist.
The impression I have is that people want the ability to have a completely clean app tray... I know I'd like one that is specifically seperate from Phone, Contacts, SMS, and Voice Mail.
I also wish I had a clean slate for widgets.. I wish all my ring tones were gone.. I wish all the wall Papers were gone. I wish the boot animations were gone..
I don't even want the "market" app visible.. I want the option to go into the market by hitting them menu button while in my apps tray and I not only want market to perform the function of searching for apps but I want it to be have a searchable directory for apps, widgets, ringtones, wall papers, boot animations.. etc.
It would also be extremely awesome if the essential codes for the essential programs were coded into the main code instead of these apps.. so that even the native essential apps I listed could be swapped out.
I think it should be done.. And I think a new repository should be made for a new market place where the XDA elite could build the programs and leave these other guys who are doing nothing for the OS as a whole but flooding the market place... they can take a f'ing hike..
You guys should leave them on the back burner and then give me .1 cent ( cause I am freaking poor) of all your sales while we head a internet market campaign aimed at recruiting all android users over to the faster more customizable base model with an XDA market place.
Seriously.. you guys could charge access to the market place and get the service going like one of those other services that bill your cell bill..
Screw those other developers... you guys making the roms are the bread and butter of what will make android what it is...
And any developer who wants to publish programs on your better version of code.. you should charge them a fee....
and then you should lock up the code for your customized version of the OS and take a decade to release it.
I seriously want a 10th of a cent on every dollar for my thought.. its a billion dollar market... you guys could take it imo.
And as you do you could hire more people to work to get it functioning on every smart phone that hits the market.
You guys should do it.. I need a cool million and you guys need a cool billion... cut them out of the picture and make apple struggle.. i heard they are going to emulate the android OS or something on the iphone so users can switch between OS...
F it... rename the whole OS "Jack dRoid"

omfg, that makes 2 of us...
Why??
What is customizable by a regular user??
Wall papers and widget placement????????
I despise the flooded market place that struggles to accustom a bunch of different versions of one OS.
I also despise the fact that the people doing the real developing work, are probably having their work stolen all the while others are just flooding the market place with junk trying to profit... not to mention the people here are the best customer service you can get.
It personally pisses me off.
If you guys think the pieces of the pie are in the right hands then either A. You are stealing others work and you work for someone getting a big piece of the pie or B. You are making contributions and getting nothing for it and need to check your self value.
Nobody is bringing me apps2SD,tethering, themes, roms, 2.1 but the people here...
The rest are just beating around the bush providing crappy customer service while refusing to even provide me with the option to change the way my dialer looks,. all the while providing ridiculous salaries to a bunch of slackers.

I was wondering if someone could make a ROM for me... I know that it's kind of unreasonable to ask a chef that already devotes alot of their free time to make a special ROM but I figure'd, what the hey?
I like the Plain Jane sense ROM that Jcase made but I was wondering if someone could take that ROM and run with it a little more like fixing the TWS 50% bug, removing the bloatware, improving battery life ( if possible),adding apps2sd and JIT. This is assuming that it can be done. Don't worry, my feelings won't be hurt if there aren't any takers. Thanks!

Word of advice. You want something, learn it. TWS is a joke. No battery difference. Dont care what anyone says. Removing bloatware can be done via either adb or root explorer. Sounds like you dont want to learn, so invest a few bucks and buy root explorer. You can access system files and remove them that way. Improving battery life is by changing OC options.
Dont mean to sound like a **** but you are asking for stuff that is already out there or can be done by you by either running a flash able update or by adb. Google is your friend.
Re: ROM request...
First of all tws is not a joke because. If it was a joke, developers wouldn't be talking about fixes for it. Second, are you a dev? Or are you just having fun throwing around your little bit of knowledge for everyone else here to ooh and aw over and say "oh kevlar is soo smart!" I may be no special dev, but I can honestly say Kevlar is 100% correct. The tools are on this forum and devs can't take out the time to make special roms for each person. All I do is port roms for the community and that's even a hassle, o do everyone a favor and reaed up a little bit. It will do you some good.

+1 on that. Especially the porting being a pain in the ass thing.
Not so sure about TWS though, as when I fix it I DO see battery life improvements. And it's with OC off. But I'm no dev either so I could be wrong.

I find it hilarious that even when I have a request that is stated in the most polite, non-begging, completely understanding and respectful way of the ones who would actually be able and capable of helping me out, the trolls of XDA STILL have nothing better to do than flame me. This was a very simple question AND I even stated that I understand the time constraints of the developers. Also, being that I have flashed just about every ROM for the Eris there is right now, I don't really have a problem reading and researching...I have a problem with developing (you know, the whole reason for my question in the first place). So I'd like to thank you guys so much for really making a mountain out of a mole hill here. ADMIN: Could someone please delete this topic? The children can't seem to play nice.
Maybe you should wait till Christmas and ask someone to make you one.
Or maybe offer some money, people might be more inclined to make 1 ROM for 1 person.

semmtexx don't call me a troll. I asked you one simple question. I never stooped down to your level to name calling. I asked you to answer a very simple question. AND I'd still like to know it. You should live by a golden rule. IF you want something done right DO IT YOURSELF. Now, back to my question. Why DO YOU, think you're so special, that someone is going to take time out of their life, to build YOU a ROM, for FREE, to a STRANGER. Sorry but I don't think I'm the troll here.
PS, ONE last thing, and what exactly are you getting so upset about. You open a thread, people respond, you don't like the way they respond now you ask the ADMINs to WASTE their time cleaning up crap that shouldn't have ever been made. do us all a favor, and read before you write.

Thanks!

check out xtrROM. not custome taylored but sounds like it has "most" of what you are looking for...
TWS is only about half fixed and I have yet to add apps2sd however there is a bit more room on the phone after all the boatware has been removed.

Ah.. Thanks for the constructive input, zach.xtr. I must admit, I flashed your latest (well not the Vboost quite yet) this morning and the battery life seems damn good even with OC. I can see myself sticking with yours for a while. I actually had 2 PM's today from two developers wondering if I'd like them to work on a ROM for me.... for a price of course. I really don't know why Blazed One thinks that I am assuming that I am "special" and would like a ROM for free. I really didn't state either of those things nor would I. Oh and Blazed One, I'll be sure to let you know how my custom ROM turns out. I may even give you the name of the developer that I end up going with, if you are nice. Thanks again zach.xtr for you hard work. This latest is really great.
Well this was an interesting read.

I remember the good ol days when people just dropped by, downloaded some stuff, left nice comments and went about their day. Lately, bout the last month or so, the threads have been filled with "I donated a dollar, I want my ROM" or "can I get an ETA on this?" (which is the rudest question I've ever seen here) or just people arguing or one-upping each other. I fear we're losing the community-based friendliness of this site as the days go along.
As we can see, a few devs have had enough and already left. How much longer is everyone gonna keep this up? It's like I visited XDA one day and it turned into an AOL n00b forum. It sucks. I want the old XDA back where people didn't cry about CM missing deadlines (they just visited again later and if a new CM was up they were happy, if not they just came back later), people didn't complain about Damageless losing his job and having to focus on his life instead of ours, people simply enjoyed what was available instead of hounding devs about when stuff is coming out.... I must say it'll be released when it's released!
I just don't understand what's so difficult about giving those who give us the time of our lives time to breathe and enjoy their lives too. It shouldn't matter whether a "donation" of a $1 or $1000 is made - the devs (and some of the senior members, shucks, even like me) deserve a lot more respect than what's going around lately. At the end of the day, I just don't want to suffer for following the rules when others decide to wreck it for the rest of us.
Anyway, I just had to rant. I still <3 XDA and always will. This place really has changed my life forever.
That is very well said. Devs should be praised not hounded.
annnnnnnd now you're crying lol sorry had to.

LOL, this is what happens when we recommend ROM flashing noobs to XDA developers. Impatient, expecting, demanding & consuming individuals.
The old XDA had it, it just multiplied x3 when Android came into the fray.

Everyone was a noob at some point. Don't let that be used as an excuse for bad forum behavior.

I have seen this before with Forums as the user-base grows and popularity increases, which Android brought many non technical users into the smartphone era, your impatient/arrogant/immature user-base grows as well and since they are still learning how things work but want it now since this is the era of entitlement your gonna get alot of asshats wanting there ROM now or there FIX now. It sucks but It happens.
One thing about XDA is its never been that user friendly or at least as long as I have been here. Seems like a few people come here just to be assholes. They know everything and even if you agree with them they will still act like dicks. With that said I try to stay out of those situations. Sit back in my thread and sometime comment on topics. Sorry but its true.
Try it, post something in the wrong thread by accident and see what happens.

This. The Evo was the first time that an android device really blew up with the non-technical crowd, and of course XDA has a reputation, so all of the new users came here. Unfortunanly, they don't really understand what it means to be a member of a development community though, and look at XDA like it's just another smartphone forum.

This is true, but back then people just took it in stride. Also, people have gotten a lot less militant about posting in the wrong threads. Back in june/july though, it was rough. And god forbid you didn't search first...

I lightened up my statement a bit.. its not a lot just a select few.
I've been guilty of wrong thread bashing myself it can be kinda fun. All depends on how out of place the topic is.
P_dub_S has it right. the market just expanded so much for androids. its like when blackberry came out with the Pearl and every teenage girl had one lol... most of the new phones arnt owned by tech people. hopefully in the fallowing months they will calm down. stil think the best forum was the xda section for the eris im just happy to have a phone lol so dont mind me
Most people just don't see how hard it is to make some of this stuff work. People must think that making roms/themes/kernels is just a bunch of copying and pasting or something...one thing that bugs the living hell out of me is on those Desire HD port threads...if the OP doesn't respond in 3 days, they just bump it saying something like "Well...I guess this is dead..." Devs ain't robots, something wrong with these people...

Exactly. What people don't understand is this is a hobby. We are not making a living doing this, and I do not get paid for this. Yes its true that we do receive donations but not NEARLY as many as I think people assume.
imho...these forums which used to be filled with great developers turned into a forums filled with the developers wanting compensation or in prettier words "beer money" for their time and effort instead of "joy and fun" or "hobby" of making roms and is slowly becoming more "pay-to-play" and if you don't pay, they take their business elsewhere to their own "pay-to-play" forums....just my own observation going from windows mobile development to android....

Not doubting you, but I'm curious (because I don't frequent other forums, or noticed anyone leaving), who took their "business" elsewhere, and where did they take it? I haven't really seen that - those donation links in the sigs have been around forever...

He is correct I have seen a few developers take their ROMs elsewhere (create their own website) but I'm not sure it was about money. I have donated to a few chiefs because I understand the time that goes into making these ROMs. Its time I could be spending with my kids. People seems to feel chiefs are obligated to do this for some reason. I do it because I like it not because I want to get paid. I get paid at work. When people complain at you all the time it turns it into work and then it isn't fun anymore.
Screw all of you....I payed my turkey sandwich and a hooker! I want my damn daily updates with a rom so spectacular that it will make me a full course meal.
Of course im playing but i cant help but agree with you. I find that i spend more time sorting through "non searchers" than anything else. I hope to see this calm down over the next year. Good thing about this is that people will only get smarter and simmer down....My car forums(g35driver.com) is getting worse as the car gets cheaper. More kids and ridiculousness.

that's where you are wrong...sure "some" people may get smarter, but for every person that gets smarter, 5 more noobs are sure to follow...
