You'll probably get flamed for not searching, but I'd say flash Cyanogen, and don't update your kernel or radio unless you know what you're doing (which of course you're new). Link in my sig for a fool-proof How-To.

I'd wait for Froyo.

I did, the first chance I got. . . 4 months ago. ;-)
My point was that, with FroYo right around the corner (anticipating that it'll leak with Google I/O), I'd wait for that rather than go through the trouble of flashing now, just to have to flash again next week.

I do that to, with test versions and such. Just thinking that with the differences between 2.1 and 2.2, why bother. If there was something specifically needed by rooting go for it, but why root to flash a custom 2.1 over stock when 2.2's around the corner. To each his own.

Latest CyanogenMod ROM with the latest Pershoot kernel.
BTW flashing a kernel is NOT dangerous, but flashing a radio is. Don't take the battery out if your phone freezes during a radio flash.

Kang-o-rama. No doubt about it.

The RUU police didn't get here in time for this one...
You'll have to wait for a 2.1 exploit to be discovered.

thanks, it's alright though, 2.1 is great. The only things i wish it had were lwp and friendstream, but i can cope. I guess i'll just wait.
So you have 2.1 RUU ? Then you cannot root.
haha yeah i bit the dust,
i don't think i'm missing out on that much seeing as i tried rooting before and it never worked

hrm a new user must have posted and then deleted.
i did try to use the kitchen, it would get up to the point where it would go into recovery mode then just stay stuck at the HTC logo recovery screen, also when i was doing it it says pre-kitchen has identified that you are not running a stock sprint rom, even though i was completely stock 1.5.

Sprint 2.1 update released!!!

For whoever hasn't noticed....the HTC site has the long-awaited 2.1 update. Here's the info.

Ooh you're right... not gonna flash this one, but rather flash other people's mods of it.
Thanks for the heads up though, nice to have it backed up
Um. Not to be rude but this was released 3 days ago and is already old news. And yes, if you use this update you will lose root, with no current way to get it back.

Dont get too excited. No one is develpoing ROMs based off of this, because there hasnt been a way found to root this. If you install it it WILL unroot your phone, maybe permanently. But there are several ROMs already running the leak of this. The leak that had the release keys instead of test keys that came out a few days before, and even has the same MD5 checksum as the HTC/Sprint download. Check Fresh Rom 2.1.1
Good idea to do plenty of reading first

sprint release
If you go to htc sight in to the communitty hear the problems they are having already with this not working correctly. People when downloading the MR is not sticking and for those that do they are having mms problems. Read into it first before you loose your root and have this problems.

It doesn't matter if there is a way to root it or not, devs take the ROM.zip from the RUU, and build everything into it.

Man, I am qouted in like 6 signatures around these parts...
I am awesome!

regarding the next ota from verizon....

i like the rom i am using and do not want the next update from verizon. how do i got about keeping what i have and not taking the next update? i obviously don't want my phone asking me every day if i want to apply the update. do i need to trick it into thinking i already have it? if so, how do we do this?
Are you running a custom rom? If so, it shouldn't nag you for any Official OTA's.

i'm running version 2.0 of Virtuous rom. it's based off of the build that is currently on any stock Incredible. it's deodexed and stuff, but it's based off of the current build. 3.21.605.1 is the build of my current rom, not 3.26.605.1.
i have put a lot of work into getting it where it is right now and i have no desire at all to run anything different. i keep updating kernels as they get better and better, but thats it.
Hello boys and girls!
The word of the day is... "Nandroid"... Can you say it with me? "Naaaaaaandroid" Good, I knew you could! (^_^)>b
p.s. - the previous poster is correct. Any custom ROM should either A)not get the OTA update at all or B)get the OTA and prevent it from installing which will shut up that bothersome notification lol

FYI - There's a post on the development forum for the skyraider rom where a user says they're receiving the update message too! Sounds like not all custom ROMS block OTA's.

Thanks for the reference. The leaked build version seems to be working for this purpose.
To get this to work, you need to edit the /system/build.prop. find the line that begins with "ro.build.fingerprint" and change it to:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/264707:user/release-keys
Once rebooted, the nag might appear once more, but if you go to Settings->About phone->System updates you wil now get "your system is currently up to date".

[Q] synergy RC2 ??

As the title suggests, id like to install synergy rc2 rom. Problem is my evo is already running gingerbread 2.3.3 from over the air update. What is the simplest easiest way i can root & install this rom? My 1st inclination is downgrade to froyo 2.2 first, but im unsure how to go about doing that. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. If this has been covered elsewhere please point me in the right direction cuz ive looked around quite a bit.
Thx
Look around some more.

You can't root the latest OTA update. You're going to have to wait till another exploit is found. Your stuck running sense at the moment unless you go grab yourself a Evo3D.

you are out of luck my friend, like many others and myself. We're stuck with stock GB 2.3.3 ...
All you can do is sit and wait it out until we get a full root again, it will come. Just hang in there..

You obviously didn't look very hard at all. 2 weeks ago, I counted all the threads that asked this same question, and I stopped counting at 80... So I dont know how you have missed any of these threads.
What about the possibility of downgrading, than rooting and applying a custom rom??? Can it be done that way somehow??

Again, this has been discussed at least 50 times in the last month. You cannot downgrade without root. And you cannot root 2.3 yet.

Easiest way to root?

I'm brand new to the Glacier, although I've rooted many other phones.
I looked at the guides I could find here, but I was wondering if there is an easier way to S-off + CWM than a bunch of ADB to downgrade to 2.2.1 etc... seems overly complicated atm, isn't there a way to root on GB stock ROM or an easier way in general?
I really have searched, but there is too much info and I feel like some of it may be old, like there's an easier way to root now?
Just wanna flash some custom ROMs basically.
exploit
downgrade
root/unlock hboot/install recov
i duno, it doesnt get much easier than that. its honestly very simple it just takes some time to do.
if you have the stock mytouch 4g you dont need to downgrade as far as i know..
just follow the steps, i just rooted a second one of these with stock 2.3.. took a bit longer but it worked out, the guides here are amazing
ok well I was basically wondering if there was an updated way to do it, but I guess I'll just do the downgrade and go from there.
Thx for the heads up.

Hate to be the bearer of bad new, but as of currently the only way to root the 2.3.x update is to downgrade to 2.2.x then root.
There are two different eMMC chips that you could have in your device. You might want to look at my Noob Thread. I know with a post count of over 3k your not a noob but it has all the links that you'll be interested in.
