hi
i have been noticing for a while now that when i turn on my wifi connction (i don't have any other internet connection for my g1 at the moment) also some other tasks are started.
first there is the "settings" task which i can understand and is basically ok. but suddenly "weather" (widget? which i don't use at all) and the "dolphin browser" (which i have installed, yes) are running too. and a task called "my uploads"
why are these 3 tasks running? i don't want them to. what can i do?
same thing happens when turning wifi off...
and it is not only wifi. background downloading drags the gallery along, BT starts also settings and bluetooth share, bluetooth file transfer (which sound like they are supposed to be running)
edit:
uninstalling the apps with titanium worked for my uploads and the weather widget but i can't really uninstall the rest because well i use them ^^°
Autostarts is a great app which can disable apps from starting during all kinds of system events, including turning Wi-Fi on and off.
thx was exactly what i was looking for

A couple of days ago I decided to wipe my phone which was running cyanogen's 4.2.13 because it felt slightly sluggish and I figured it was because I've been through so many rom updates and havent wiped, coming from before the whole google/cyanogen cease and decist.
i wiped the phone, reflashed 4.2.13 and enoch theme and began restoring all my data and apps. I noticed very strange behavior coming from the phone shortly after this though. sometimes the phone would just become completely unresponsive, not even the red button would put it to sleep mode. only option was to pull the battery which allowed the phone to run fine after a reboot.
this has happened a total of 3 times since I wiped/reflashed it (monday night). today it happened again and I decided to let the phone run until I was able to open advanced task manager. to my surprise, about every single application I have on my phone was running in the Applications tab. after killing all, the phone was back to being responsive again. I did not execute anything to open these apps, the phone simply started lagging out and I suppose the reason is because every app was trying to get some use of the CPU.
now I am keeping a heavy watch on my advanced task manager list to see if this will happen again, and I noticed that the Messaging application has spawned itself on the list. is this normal? is something wrong with my phone? has it been compromised? I haven't downloaded anything strange, just the same apps I had before wipe/reflash.
No your location hasn't been compromised and there isnt any spyware or viruses on your phone. Those are services, just like on computers that do numerous things.Sometimes settings becomes active after using power control. You could just put the widget for the taskiller on you home screen if your concerned about speed. If your home screens are filled with hundreds of widgets try removing some and see if the speed increases. The 10MB hack might be helpful if you switch b/t a lot of apps.Or you could try another rom if you wanted.
im pretty sure an app like AK notepad doesnt run as a service, but it was populated a few times on my applications tab, along with other things such as calculator.
i don't use the power control widget either. leaving the task killer widget on my home screen to kill the processes as they fork bomb my phone is just a sloppy way to fix whatever is wrong.
and my home screens arent filled with widgets. the only widgets I use are weather, calendar, curvefish's bluetooth wifi silent screenlock, and overclock widget.
If all your apps keep running in the background try using advanced task managers auto end list
Got my Desire Z yesterday
Got a couple of questions if someone could answer them for me please?
1) If Wi-Fi is turned on and I browse the web etc, does the phone use the wi-fi (my home wi-fi this is) over the phone network, i.e. so I don't get charged as I'm currently waiting for my contract plan to renew and my free data does not kick in until next month.
2) Is there a way of closing off apps that I have previously opened, or do I need another app to do this as I assume leaving apps running in the background will be a bigger drain on the battery?
3) I have setup a HTC Sense account, does the phone remain connected to this the whole time? (just want to make sure nothing racks up my data usage as I'm not on free data as yet).
Thanks for any info.
Oh, and PS - can anyone recommend some good apps?
If your Wi-fi is on and you are connected to a wireless network, the traffic will go over this network. You can also edit your settings so that the phone doesn't use phone network to update facebook, weather, etc. This goes for all apps and functions, including HTC Sense, email sync, etc.
Task killers are not supposed to be used with Android. You can read more about that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849974
What a good app for you is, depends on what you're looking for. But as for games, I do recommend Angry Birds and Doodle Jump (Santa doodle is just too cute these days )
A couple of must-have apps for me:
ChompSMS - replaces built-in text messaging app
Winamp - media player
Astro File Manager - does so much more than file management
ScoreMobile - real-time updates on sports scores
BuzzBox - RSS reader
Kayak - itinerary manager and travel application
Barcode Scanner
Tim Hortons Finder - for Canadians jonesing for their cup of Timmy's
JuiceDefender -
setCPU - set up CPU profiles for
Battery Graph - tracks drain on battery
TED Mobile
Some games and lighter fare:
Air Control Lite - fun game
Paper Toss
Angry Birds
Hungry Shark
Kobo reader
Aldiko reader
Hope this helps kick you off in the right direction.

You don't need to worry, Android handles this automatically. The app won't be doing anything to drain the battery unless there's something seriously wrong with the app.

You can control how often the phone syncs with your HTC Sense account just like you control the other things is syncs with such as Gmail, Facebook, etc, etc. So you can set those to sync manually so you have more control, and then only go and sync particular things when you need them.
HTCSense.com doesn't work too well for a lot of people at the moment (though you might be lucky), see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849410
Thanks for the replies.
So is there one overall setting to turn the data off or is there a setting within each app, where I can turn it off (just for the time being).
Oh, and one other question is there a way of checking how much battery is remaining apart from the little symbol at the top of the screen? Only got it yesterday and it's showing about a 3rd remaining. Seems to have gone down quickly, although I have probably been fiddling a bit more than what I will do once I "get use to it".
Thanks

Go into Menu->Settings->Accounts & Sync and you'll see all the settings in there. One overall setting to sync automatically or not, and then individual sections for each account where you can sync them manually.

You can also go into Menu->Settings->About Phone->Battery, and if you choose the "Battery Use" section you can see what's been using the battery.
There are loads of extra battery widgets you can install on the Android market, to give you a percentage display. I'm using this one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724778

I've installed the "Mobile Network" widget so I can turn data off and on at will.
Widgets > Settings... > Mobile Network
Just noticed on the last couple of Roms that there are a number of unused applications running in the background. No particular builds are better or worse.
Why is this the case?
Eg stock MDJFroyo Streak Lite and with all the widjets deleted and a fresh restart I have
Facebook
Gallery
Google Search
Maps
Music
Search
Twitter
Youtube.
Now I don't normally use any of these and have static wallpaper with wifi and bluetooth disabled. No widgets showing.
Is this normal?
Was going to use a tool to prevent these from auto loading.
i use autorun killer to see what runs on boot up
give it a try and disable those you dont need
Ran autotask killer however none of the apps showed up.
This is perfectly normal...using a Task Killer won't work as the app will just start up again soon after you kill it. task Killers are not recommended.
It just means the apps start faster when you launch them...they don't do any harm sitting idle in the background.
search for "AUTORUN killer"
not auto-TASK
Basically, I went into Settings>Apps>Running and realised I don't want Facebook in there ever unless I actually open the app. I opened the Facebook app Settings and disabled Notifications off. Also Messenger Location Services is off too. Each time I try and kill the process or reboot it comes back.
Things that load that I want to permanently disable unless I actually open the specific app:
Facebook
Maps
Google Play Store
I use Titanium to put a widget on my screen where I can freeze and unfreeze that app. I have done it with maps and some other programs that were aggressive in their communications. Unfreeze them, open and use, refreeze when done.
Thanks grubbster.
Any other options available to me?
Other than ignoring it, you can kill the app each time you close it. There's a developmental setting that shuts down the apps (not sure if it's in Cyanogenmod only or just stock) because it doesn't keep anything in the background. This would close ANY app that's not holding forground view however.
I'll just leave it as it is to be honest. Just thought there was a quick way of doing it similar to how the MSCONFIG utility operates in Windows.
MSCONFIG does that for startup, there are apps that block apps from starting up in android too but those apps need to be running as well which defeats the whole purpose of having plenty of RAM in the first place..
The whole point is Android manages the background apps just fine. Having 2GB of RAM but wanting 1.6GB to be free all the time (200MB used by GPU AFAIK so you are left with 1.8GB) is not the smartest way to manage apps. You want them snappy, in and out and done. Apps sitting in memory doesn't use more power because the RAM is active even as long as it's plugged into the the motherboard.
Hi all,
I tried everything I could think of, to stop these apps from running in the background, disabled most of them in Settings, but they keep on popping up running in the background, when I run Optimize or just after I turn on internet (wifi/mobile data).
Please see screenshots
Apps: YouTube(though not used that day), Yellow pages (should not even run on global ROM and blocklist turned off), Blocked number storage (turned off in Settings), Emergency alerts (turned off in Settings), App Vault (turned off in Home Screen settings), Mi Coins (not used in global ROM, so should not even run), and some others.
II tried asking Xiaomi for help, but even though they promise to fix in next update nothing happens. I asked google for help with Emergency alerts, since its their app, they never reply.
Can you help?
Take in mind my phone is not rooted.
