Regarding the Droid Eris 2.1 OTA - Droid Eris Android Development

I'm warning you, if you want root, I recommend that you stay where you are in regards to firmware.
Anyways, It's been reported by numerous sources that the OTA is supposedly starting 5/11/10. If this is true, it is important that we get the rom as soon as possible to check whats up with it.
If you get the OTA notice, and willing to accept it, please follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642135
This will help a lot if the OTA really is released soon.
Please post the link here or PM me it if you get it.

Thank you for posting this.

Regarding the Sprint Official 2.1

I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread regarding everything that's going to happen regarding Sprint's official 2.1 update, including steps we should take if we want to use it, and what the consequences will be. I'm not an expert on these things, but there are lots of people here who are, and centralizing that information will probably be very helpful to lots of folks once this update is rolled out.
For starters, what will we have to do if we want to install the update? wipe, restore nandroid backup, receive OTA update?
Secondly, will there be anyway to maintain root on the device and also install their official 2.1?
Thirdly, will there be any real advantage to installing the official sprint update?
If anyone has any answers to these questions, or wants to ask other questions, or has any other pertinent information on what this 2.1 update process will entail, please post it here so we can all learn. Thanks!

Not that I'm aware of. Nor is it clear that we will be able to root the same way as we did the 1.5.

1. The update might wipe your phone. Expected to be OTA.
2. Nobody but Sprint knows if the root exploit is patched. Wait for release, dont update right away, wait for confirmation of root.
3. The way I see it, the only benefit is that 2.1 ROMs will have everything working "officially". Sprint stock ROMs are full of crapware.
just wait till it realeased and your questions will be answered no one knows what the updates going to do or included in it
Regarding whether or not the same root exploit will work, I'm not a real expert on phone development or Android, but I am a software engineer and a real Linux nerd.
Presumably the 2.1 images will also include a much newer kernel that has long since patched that old fs pipe exploit. But who knows, maybe they won't. Either way, there are always occasional local root exploits found within the linux kernel, so it would just be a matter of time.
The way I see it is the Eris users finally have root on 1.5 but whoever updated to the leaked 2.1 can't get root... If Eris = Hero, 2.1 < 1.5. Hahh.
Kinda off-topic here, but the OP needs to fix the title of the thread. If you go into the OP, hit Edit, then hit Advanced Edit, you can change it
Root can only take so long. Once the source is released there's no way to stop people from baking an AOSP with root.

Thanks! lol, I thought it would be under advanced thread tools and when it wasn't I gave up looking
Once we get a ruu of the stock upgrade we should be able to extract the necessary files to make a full update.zip of the stock rom with root already applied. So if you dont want to lose root access then don't jump the gun when the update Goes official.
The only thing that I seem to be missing with Damagecontrol is certain webpages refuse to load. 99% of the webpages I access work fine. AFAIK all other features function 100% and I've had BETTER battery life after flashing this with the updated PRL.
I have a feeling it'll be a while before I finally migrate to a ROM based on the official build being that I'm so satisfied with this one.
You can take this with a grain of salt. I just finished a chat with a sprint tech using the chat feature on their site. This person said that the update will be OTA and that there was no specified date yet.
"It will be OTA. We are actively working on having the Android 2.1 platform available to our Hero and Moment customers over the coming weeks. However, there is no fixed date has been mentioned here."
So if this tech has the correct info then I doubt the 26th of March is going to be the date as some have stated. But this person may not have access to everything that is why I say take it with a grain of salt.
Just updated to 2.1 OTA. Not bad, kind of sluggish, but to be expected from an official version.
............yeah no. So much for March eh?

march isn't over yet.
....i say more like april or may tbh. i heard the nexus launch might be in june so it makes sense to release 2.1 closer to that considering the n1 runs 2.1.

Root, Roms and OTA Updates

Now that the slide has Root and an update, I have a question that may have been asked/answered in previous threads, forgive me in advance (I did a search and could not get an answer)...
Once rooted, will the slide still get the Froyo update?
Also if the phone has to go back for exchange/warranty, is there a way to flash it back to "Stock" as we did with the Samsung BHII?
TIA!
There is a nandroid backup of the stock rom available in the development section of the forum to revert back for warranty, not sure if froyo will goto a rooted slide, but I'm sure the devs will have a 2.2 rom out soon

Wait... There was an update?
This is the one thing keeping me from rooting.
Just back up your stock android rom before rooting so you can restore it. When you get to clockworkmod for the first time create a backup.

½anyone know where to get the RUU of the slide rom, not mixed and modified by a dev or cook?
but the origional rom or lastest version of it.
the nandroid backup will get you back to stock(ish) and if you're rooted with an aftermarket rom, you WILL NOT receive any updates from tmobile.. A couple days after release of the update, we'll have a rooted version, i can bet my right nut on it(and yes i do still have my right nut lol)
Guys... I don't play forum police or anything but the questions go in the q/a stickied thread or in general. The moderater already moved several threads like this today. Oh and when we do get an update... it will posted here after the proper mods have been made. You'll only have to wait a couple days and I'm sure that will be faster than you having to wait in line for your ota to be beamed to your handset. So go ahead and root it.. trust me! You'll be glad you did. Oh and if you get an ota... don't install it! Contact me or one of the other forum members. Or better yet post your news and we'll tell you the steps so we all can enjoy it.

Thanks bro for trying to keep people in line while I have been busy. and like you said this thread is now moved to QandA where it shouldve been posted.
Agreed... Sorry about that - just thought General was appropriate at the time.

How to uninstall unrevoked root and recovery reflash tool so I can get OTA update?

I would like to get the OTA update that comes out today, but assume I cannot do that with root and the custom recovery. Are there directions somewhere on how to do this for the unrevoked3 setup? Thanks.
If you are running a rooted stock rom and all you've done is push super user, busybox, and maybe a modified host file for adfree, I don't understand why you would need to unroot to receive the OTA update. None of the core system has been modified. Am I totally off base here? To my mind, the worst that would happen is you would loose root.
need stock recovery to flash the ota properly. downgrade via the instructions posted in this forum and do the two ota. then reroot using unrevoked 3
I'd just wait for the devs to clear the new OTA. Didn't take long with the EVO.
No need to jump the gun quite yet...

Yeah, this is what I'm waiting for. A similiar EVO solution to the OTA
seriously, you open a thread to answer your other thread? while the answer you looking for is right in the 1st page.
I've reported both threads and suggested a temp ban. **** on the first page there is a huge orange font telling me how to install the ota. I wish this phone woulda came out on anything but verizon. To many kids on verizon....and idiots.
Lol

I'm not issuing warnings yet for questions posted in development which may fall under that scope. I have requested a Q&A sub-forum be created for DI. We'll see how that pans out. Until then, please post questions in the thread where you believe your issue is arises. Otherwise, please post questions in the DI/General sub-forum until a Q&A forum is created. Thanks!

4.1.52 to more current version

I am trying to get my phone to update with no luck. I spent about an hour on the phone with Motorola trying to see if they could just push updates to my phone and apparently this is not an option. They say it shows my phone is up to date.
I currently am on 2.2.1 system version 4.1.52 which is not supported on their website to do any kind of updates. I am using a Mac and Motorola has mac compatible stuff on their website. Can anyone please direct me to something as simple as what is on Motorolas website? I would like to get 2.3.
when I go into my phone and check for updates, it says I am already up to date. Has anyone else had this issue? I have searched on here and 2-3 other forums and cannot find a solution to my problem. Motorola said I could send them my phone and they could update it, but I am trying to avoid having to do that.
PS: I am not familiar with this stuff so if you could dumb down your responses I would greatly appreciate it
thats because 4.1.52 isnt an OFFICIAL ota man..
you have to downgrade your device to 1.26 ota to > 1.57 ota to > 1.83 ota to> 4.5.91 Gingerbread.
well that makes sense. It would have been nice if Motorola could have told me that.
Is there an easy way to get 1.26 on my phone with a macbook?
Not that I know of. I could be wrong. But using RSD on a windows PC is super easy to downgrade your device.
I dug around for you, and may be able to help...The previous poster is right, you can't be on 4.1.52 in order to receive updates. You need to flash an official OTA first. On mac, use this guide...I don't have a mac, never used this guide, can't guarantee it...but just read the thread a little bit to know all you need to know
You can go here to select the SBF of your choosing I suppose... or, in the Development Section, maybe read about the Pudding thread, and see if you want to unlock your bootloader or not.
Lemme know if you have any more specific questions...Like I said, I haven't been in your situation and don't know every detail, but I could help you get in the right direction.

But yeah, I understand not feeling comfortable...if you read through it all and make sure you know what COULD go wrong, it's all easier than you think. Just for future reference

I thought I'd jump in to make a suggestion before you get filleted like a fish. Please see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848. It will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know. Read, re-read if necessary; trust me, it's all in there. It's VERY well written with a tremendous amount of time spent to help all of us out.
I think the thread linked above should answer your question pretty well. Also, in future please search before posting and post questions in the Q&A forum.

like they said above....read.
however, to answer the question simply, if you want to update to stock ota after rooting, you will need to reflash stock recovery, then you can either wait for the notification to update or you can download the signed ota zip and sideload it with stock recovery. you do not need to worry about actually being rooted....this does not affect whether you can update or not. what does affect it, though, is the recovery you have installed. and in order to root, you needed to install a custom recovery. This must be revered to stock prior to updating.
