I'm trying to find where the navigator app is in a rom that has it and Im not finding it in /system/app or maybe im not looking for the right name, not sure...
the htc navigation icon thingy, if that is what you are looking for, i believe it is called something like htcnavipanel.apk, i am not running a rom with it on it right know to check the name. it seems safe to delete, navigation still runs via Google maps without issue

I have seen it in /data/app
and yeah its the navi panel apk... Many of the roms coming out don't have it anymore, I liked it but when I tried to reinstall it, it did not work... I guess we are just supposed to use navigation out of maps...
I'm a noob, so I could be completely wrong here... but from what I've seen, Google Navigation itself is a part of Google Maps. On most of these ROMs, there is a "default" version of Maps that is installed which is currently out of date which is located in /system/app/Maps.apk. After you install a new ROM, when you go to the Market, you'll see an update is available for Google Maps. When you install that, it installs to /data/app/com.google.android.apps.maps.apk. If you watch the log when the phone starts up, I think it detects the old version in /system/app and it says that it is "ignoring" it. I've deleted the old one in the past and it hasn't made a difference (but if you do this and break something, don't blame me).
The /system/data/HtcNaviPanel.apk app is just the app that is usually used in the car. It has icons which has shortcuts to make a call, maps, navigation, footprints, etc. Outside of that app, I'm not exactly sure if there's a way to launch Maps to get directly to Navigation? Maybe a widget (I've seen some Maps widgets, but haven't played around with them much).

Am I the only person who gets "Navigation is not available in your area" when I load the navigation app? Samsung are selling the phone with navigation as a feature, one I intended to use which is disabled because?
I was under the impression that Google Navigation was only available in the US as of right now.

Its works in Canada.. Google Navigation has been working in Canada for about a year now.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
There's no google Nav in aus yet as mentioned. Brut[maps] works, but be aware there are still some small subtle oddities (which don't really affect it's use), such as going the wrong way around on roundabouts (So if it says second exit, that might mean second exit counterclockwise, NOT the correct way).
I noticed that the Google Maps Live wallpaper is no longer part of the options on Froyo.
Does anyone know how to get it on there or any news about it?
This happened on an update.zip upgrade from DI18 to EB13 on multiple phones.
Also looking for it
I'm also looking for it. Please update if you find it.
In the meantime, you can use this alternative:

Also, in this thread people are also looking for this wallpaper.
Thanks for the links. I tried the one you suggested and it just force closes everyone I try to load it. Oh well, the quest continues.
Thanks again for the help.

Who is "they" and how do I activate this on my phone? I have never been able to find out how even though once in a while I come across a reference to "Google Maps Live Wallpaper" on the interwebz. Can't find it on the market. Can't find it as an option in Google Maps. Can't find in in my wallpaper picker.
Any further explanation would be appreciated.

'They' would be GOOGLE (thought that was obvious, but maybe not). Your phone and Android version must support 'live wallpapers'. I think it started at 2.2. If it does, when you go to WALLPAPERS from home screen there will be a LIVE WALLPAPERS choice.
Until a recent GOOGLE MAPS update, if you have GOOGLE MAPS installed, MAPS would appear on the WALLPAPER/LIVE WALLPAPERS list. It started appearing there many iterations of G Maps ago.
I got all excited today when another update for G Maps popped up, thinking maybe they had accidentally left it off the last one and were updating to fix... no such luck.
I am back to using Advanced Map, which does a FORCE CLOSE everytime you boot phone, but after that works fine.

6.0.1 didn't do it, trying 5.8.0 next
I just tried the "uninstall updates" method. It only went back 1 version, and did not restore the wallpaper function.
They mustve removed it a few versions back.

OK, now I am wondering WTF. 5.8.0 no go either and it was working on my phone just a few days ago.
I just got a 'certified like new' warranty replacement and am running GB where my old phone was still on FROYO. I am starting to suspect that may have something to do with this.
I did manage to restore my fascinate to state it was before warranty exchange, Blackhole 4.4, a Froyo rom. Goolge maps was 6.xxx and the wallpaper was woring. Am now back on GB rom and it is not on available list of love wallpapers...
i just don't get it.
Has anyone else the problem that google maps constantly turns itself on in the background and starts collecting memory?
Everytime I used my phone some time and I look up active apps, there is maps with about 60mb ram. And this when ram is scarce anyway and apps constantly have to be loaded new? The process in question is com.google.android.apps.maps, but the process that nees so much ram very often is com.google.android.apps.maps:GoogleLocationService .
I disabled every location based feature I could find, therefore I see no reason at all for maps to run. I am thinking about uninstalling maps, but I use it sometimes..
Any hints?
Edit : This keeps constantly popping up in my logcat:
E/KeyguardStatusView( 2992): ERROR: Could not get Location code
W/System.err( 2992): java.lang.NullPointerException
W/System.err( 2992): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.KeyguardStatusViewManager$1$1.run(KeyguardStatusViewManager.java:334)
Disabling the weather widget solved this, maps however still turns itself on. I can not be the only one affected by this?

I had this problem.....as a workaround , I use titanium backup to freeze the app and defrost it when needed.
Or use other apps like sygic maps where you can use offline maps....and of course uninstall google maps.

I uninstalled it because I need the memory for other applications, drives you mad when every new app you go to has to load and then the old one again when you go bad. I am wondering why there is no bigger response, I found no way to stop maps without uninstalling.
Surely somebody else encountered this problem?

I acknowledge this is a valid solution, albeit not one I would like to use.
I love maps and want to keep using it, but this memory consumption kills it for me.
maybe try the app autostarts...
same thing happened with me it consumes more memory from Ram. I recently updated to Google maps latest one and the problem has arrived . Before on old Google maps when i stopped the process it won't run until next when i open the app . But when i updated to latest Google maps it runs at background although i stopped and it again starts automatically. So i decided to uninstalled it to save more ram for my other applications.

Gemini App Manager is a good tool for disabling autostarts for apps that won't stay dead. You need to be careful with it, though, as you can break stuff eg stop Google Play from auto-running and you won't get automatic app updates.
I recently saw an app in play store that would auto-defrost an app when you click on it, run it, nd when closing, freeze it again, all on the fly. Stop that map sucker dead n its tracks until you really need it.
Unfortunately I can't remember the name. You will have to search.

I have a Eonon head unit and every time I try running Sygic, all the settings reset and it tries to redownload data, so not really usable for me.
I have an Eonon GA2114 and Sygic works fine for me although I also find that it can start messing things up once connected to the internet sometimes.
The way I have it set up is all the maps are saved on my SD card so I dont use any data and you can then use an app to block Sygic access to the internet to avoid it messing anything up.

I really don't understand what the issue is then?
Have you made any MODS that are worth bragging about?
If you haven't change the dpi yet; that is one MOD you need to do. I'm sure you've realised that the available screen space is not good. This gives you a 1024x768 type resolution, but you will need to override this for certain builtin apps like the Radio for example.
I must have updated my post just after you quoted me haha, I added some extra info
I've not really got any special mods although at the moment I'm working on using Tasker and AutoRemote to have any SMS messages from my phone displayed on the headunit and also an option to reply.
I'll need to give that a go! What do you mean by having to override it for the builtin apps?

I didn't realise you have updated the post, I always have internet in the car so that must be causing issues; I did try reinstalling a few time, but got tired of downloading all the required files/map every time I reinstall.
Here maps is the best alternative that I've found, but I just stick to Google Maps as it as free traffic info too.
Built-in apps don't seem to be developed to cater for larger screens/resolution. So, the layout goes a bit messy, overcame this by using Xposed framework to apply the higher dpi setting to those particular apps (no more than 5)

If youre using Xposed; try changing your IMEI into the same as your phone IMEI for example, I think this would solve the problem for you two both as Sygic checks over internet your IMEI for a valid (phone) IMEI. I had the same problem, but Sygic works perfect for me now. See the post below for the details. Good luck!
i.draskovic said:
I have found solution how to make Sygic to work on ours devices.
It is wery easy and it finaly works for me, and I would like to share it with others. You can make it in two steps.
First of all you have to install rooted ROM. I have install update_4_4_4_RK3066_1024X600_7_MAL_14_05_2015.rar
You can find rooted rom for your device on this link https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxmzvLRI7-eNeVA2SWkwM1pLZ28&usp=sharing#listv
When you done you have to install Xposed IMEI Changer. You can find it at Google Play Store and start the app. Xposed Installer will prompt up and you have to give permissions to IMEI Changer and to install Framework if you did not already.
Than yo have to open IMEI changer and copy IMEI code from your smartphone. (I have HTC M7 and IMEI code you can find in Settings-Info-Tlefon identity.
After that you have to reboot device and open IMEI changer to see is it new IMEI applied.
If it is, than you have to go to Google Play Store, install Sygic and download maps.
Result you can see on attached image.
I hope that it will work for others.

How do you find Google maps data wise, does it use a lot? I had really liked the look of the live traffic feature of Sygic but I would need to be online obviously and that would mess up my maps etc. I had thought about using just Google Maps for traffic as well since its free but worried about how much data it would use with the navigation of it always on (suppose I could download an offline section but think they are quite small areas )
Thanks for that, will need to give it a go

I've installed IMEI Changer and this works great; a little silly that the orginal IMEI number doesn't even follow the correct format which was maybe the cause of the internet linking issues.
Will try reinstalling Sygic later and hopefully would have made a difference.

I have unlimited data so have never really looked into data usage; but I can say that it is not only traffic data you will be receiving but it would also be download map tiles. Downloading offline map data for Google is OK, I have tried it, but as you have already mentioned; you can only download small areas and these do expire after a month (I believe?).
My main issue with Google Maps is the non-existence of speed camera detection, which is why I used to use Sygic. It is now a trade off between traffic/cameras?!?!?!?!?
I have a GA2114 as well. However I can't download the HERE offline maps. It just says waiting to download and then says it's slow. Any issues with you guys? I'm running the latest Malaysk ROM.

Yep, there is a Sygic Map Downloader application that someone has created. Very simple to use and you can choose the required maps and it will download it with the required data.
You shouldn't have a problem finding this application if you look in the usual/common places people go for downloads.
If you have trouble finding it though, give me a shout and I can point you in the right direction via a pm.

I have the AG2114. I use Copilot and it works wonderfully. I bought the usa full version for I think $9.95.
I prefer Sygic and I have got it working. Just change your system IMEI number to match you phone. Works a treat. Sygic also warns of speed cameras, sharp bends, speeding and all sorts vocally.

Would you be so kind as to say for which apps you've changed the dpi and what you've changed it to and how? Which Xposed module? AppOps or something else? I've noticed several things that are just way too large to fit properly and even Nova launcher can barely change anything which was a first.
Also, if you have a custom recovery, which one?
I've only rooted, put Viper4Android, Xposed and IMEI Changer on so far. As for navigation Waze seems a popular option for those not dead set on Sygic like I am since I have world wide license already and a major reason I bought this damn thing in the first place (GA5153F). Bummer is that if one goes for the Car Navigation app over the regular one it's bye bye Snoop Dog directions but overwise it seems better laid out. Now I'm tearing my hair out trying to get the E1750 3G modem to work. There's not even a Mobile Networks setting in the menu. Maybe this kinda stuff is why people flock to custom roms which I might at a later date but I digress...
Sygic seems to work on mine but no voices it's not muted
Hi. I want to change my default Navigation app to basically ANYTHING except Google Maps. Wanted either CoPilot, Here, or Waze. I have my search provider set to Bing even but when I click on any direction link, it takes me to Google Maps. I've gone into Apps and even disabled that and ensured other Nav apps are set to open always, but it still goes to Google and Then takes me to the Play Store so I can download/Enable Maps. Any way around this? Pretty crappy of Google to do this....
Go to settings/apps & notifications/default apps/opening links. Scroll down to Maps and click on it. Click on open supported links and select don't open in this app. Hopefully it will let you choose your other navigation app when you click on a link but I've never tried that. The reason Android wants to use Maps is because Maps is integrated with Google Play Services and your Google account and a third party app won't provide the same kind of integration because it would require giving a third party app elevated privileges that are not allowed without root.
Hi and thanks. I had already tried that unfortunately. It doesn't work. ANY link you click for directions on a web page, even if asked to open only gives the option of Edge and Maps. A calendar invite or something like that will ask and give a list of valid mapping applications like Waze, Here, etc. But links on a web page......only Maps.
Having Maps integrated with Google Play services is just another reason NOT to want to use it.

Thanks for the reply. Bummer. So Google locks you into their apps even if you search with Bing. Seems like Microsoft got in a lot of trouble with the government about 20 years ago over this sort of tactics.
