Hey all,
I'm hoping someone out there will be able to answer this one relatively quickly. I'm running the Elegancia ROM and use the email application which is cooked into that rom - I believe it is the standard for most HD2 roms.
I have access to two of my email accounts through the program: Hotmail and Yahoo! I set up my Yahoo account quite ordinarily, by going through Add New Account and then banging in my login details. Sweet. Using this setup method, I was able to select the Send/Receive Every Five Minutes option before finishing the setup wizard. All is gravy there. The emails come like clockwork.
To get the Hotmail account to work, however, I had to install Windows LIVE for Windows Mobile. While I did this, and am able to access my Hotmail emails using this email program, the emails do not come automatically - I am forced to manually open the program and push "Send/Receive" before any come down the pipeline. For the life of me, I can't find any way to just turn on some kind of Send/Receive automation like with the Yahoo account. The "normal" way of doing this (Menu - Account Settings - and then select the email account you want to fiddle with) is a no go: the Hotmail and Outlook accounts are both greyed out, and thus not available for modification in this way.
If anyone knows how to switch this particular function I need on, please weigh in. Thanks in advance.
-D.
got a solution for you, mate.
Go to Start>E-mail>pick your email account>click menu>Tools>options>Tap on account to change setting> then change it there
really appreciate your suggestion. i think i found the windows live sync options using your guidance. no new emails yet, but i should know if it worked soon. thanks a mill for weighing in.was a seriously annoying issue.
how to send receive immediately, as you receive a mail

I have just received a Vario11 and setting up email I see there is no setting for this in the same way there is in Outlook desktop versions or Outlook Express.
Searching the forum and wiki, there are lots of posts about this, but they all seem to be inconclusive.
My only experience so far has been with a Dell PDA winmob5 and I'm sure it had this setting.
I am using pop3 email from an account the same as you would get from Freeserve and many others. I want to be able to ensure all mail received on the account gets to the desktop at some point, and only when travelling with the Vario will it be downloading email and replying/sending. Sent messages would be nice to get onto the desktop as well instead of having to copy the email to myself.
Testing it; I just tried downloading an email on the Vario and a copy seemed to stay on the server which I have been able to download to the desktop. So maybe it is default set to always leave on the server.
But what happens with active sync? I'm reluctant to test this without more understanding of what goes which way and what happens if messages are deleted on either device.
My desktop Outlook pst is approaching 1gb, so maybe I need to achive and tidy it up before I sync?
Is there a comprehensive post anywhere, or a good website that spells all this out?
Any other recommendations for use in my situation would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hi, I use gmail, and there is a setting on the prefrences at the gmail site to keep messages on the server and most by default do, I don't use active sync to sync my mail, so I get mail on my tytn with gprs, and if I had a home pc connection, I could just run my mail client on the desktop to check my mail, and I would have all the same messages, not sure if that was what you were wanting to accomplish or not.

I found that downloading leaves email on the server. However, deleting mail on the HTc TyTN, also deletes the mail on the server at the next download.
HELP!
I'm new to the whole mobile email thing. I recently bought an 8525 and I'd really like to set it up for push email but I just don't have a good understanding of what to do and how to do it.
Can someone point me in the right direction? Is there a wiki for mobile email? I have about a half dozen POP3 accounts now that I'm accessing via Outlook 2003 on my PC.
Thanks in advance
Dave the Noob!
Hi Dave...i feel this is something which isnt particularly documented in the wiki so you wont get a standard "Read the wiki etc.." reply hehe
The BEST thing i ever did was to get a gmail account, and route ALL my emails through it, by applying tags to the emails you receive you can easily tell which account they are from. Pop3 accounts can be checked at regular intervals by gmail so no problem there, and if you filter them appropriatly you can get certain emails pushed to your phone via an exhcnage account. You can get a free push email account (exchange account) using mail2web.com's service.
The best thing about doing this is gmail's spam filter works VERY well, and you get 2GB of space.
I personally get selected emails routed to my push account (kindly provided by walshieau....not a public service) , and also the exchange account holds my contacts and appointments.
After a ROM flash all i gotta do is sync with the exchange account and my contacts/emails and appointments are restored.
I have a Nexus One working fine on Orange.
I use it for my Blueyonder email account which is set up just the same as it was on my Hero.
The problem is this:
I get the email notification to say i have new emails, then i go into my emails and the emails are there. Then it starts to refresh my emails and then before my eyes there all disappear! It deletes them before i have chance to read them.
If i then go onto my pc to check my emails there are none there. So its obviously deleting them from the server.
Now i have checked double and triple checked the settings. Its definitely not set to delete from server or even delete when read.
Any help will be appreciated as i dont know what is going on and I'm losing important emails.
I take it you are using the native email client?
Maybe this is not the answer that you are looking for but I use the Gmail App instead of the native Email client. That way I get the benefit of Push without having to refresh.
If you are interested in doing the same then all you have to do is..on your PC:
Gmail > Settings > Accounts and Import > Check mail using POP3: > Add POP3 email account.
Then all blueyonder emails will be pushed to the Gmail App and you can set a label for them as well.
Yes i am. I`m just upset that it doesnt work just like the Hero did. That was spot on..
I`ll try your idea if no one comes up with a solution for me. Cheers.
I agree with Abbsta... you should to add your blueyonder account to gmail and receive all your blueyonder emails in gmail account.
it is much easier and being a google phone it works well with gmail accounts...
I did what you said and its spot on cheers..
Just an update. Spoke to HTC had no idea why it was doing but suggested i use imap instead of pop3.
It worked!
Thanks everyone in advance for any help you may give me.
I have just bought an HTC Desire and my company e-mail runs through MS Officelive (i.e. Hotmail/Windows Live for Business).
I have heard previous Android devices syncing with Hotmail (probably through 3rd party apps installed).
Does anyone know of a good email app that enables HTML etc. and syncs with Hotmail/Windows Live which isn't POP3 (which is terrible as it doesn't sync).
Tried Maildroid and it will only work over POP3 again (even though it says it works with Windows Live).
Would be great if there's a push one too!
Don't mind if it's a paid app either to get it working without POP3.
Any help?
Thank you again.
RE: MailDroid
Hi Urp,
MailDroid will work for it over IMAP if you have set the correct settings. Most people have POP3 so it defaults to that, but if you add in your username/pass and click manual setup, you will be able to add in your imap settings.
PM me if you need some help.

P.S. I did not even know live supported IMAP
I tried Seven Beta and if kinda works with hotmail but is very buggy at the moment and support is lacking as it's only beta.
It may work better for you so give it a try
Sully
Thanks guys, I appreciate the support. Do you know the IMAP settings for Windows live then? Everywhere I've read said it isn't supported.
Thank you again guys!

RE: Windows Live
Right, that is what I thought. MailDroid works over POP3 for hotmail/live/msn etc. and will do a poll of the server. My understanding is that windows live mail means that the desktop client can access other IMAP accounts and not that Hotmail itself has IMAP.
You can get push mail by signing up for other companies (shangmail and maybe seven (not sure how seven does it)) and they will poll and get UIDs and then push to you. Essentially, they are polling and pushing from their application. Personally, I am biased, but I will tell you that I have many happy hotmail/live/msn users.
Are you seeing issues using MailDroid?
edit: Go to windowslivehelp.com and search for IMAP and you will see that it is not supported.
I have my hotmail account synced directly to my desire, i simply told it to set up an account used my hotmail addy and it got the settings from the internet for me.
However in case yours isnt picking them up for some reason I have provided them below for you- Htc Desire on Tmobile Software number 1.15.110.11
incoming settings
protocol =pop
pop server = pop3.live.com
security type =ssl
server port =995
outgoing settings
login required =ticked
username =hotmail addy ie [email protected]
smtp server=smtp.live.com
security type=tls
server port=587
Account name =Hotmail
Your Name =what ever you want it to display
hope that helps you.
The op doesn't want to use pop access he wants imap or push email, where it deletes messages from server and shows read items as already read etc
Sully
Then simply select your live/hotmail account and select the three vertical bars from the widget to take you into the full email app.
then from there you need to press the menu button and select more.
then select settings and under send and receive settings select
Delete mail on server to be on ie ticked.
this will then delete them from your hotmail account as you delete them from your device when you press refresh to resync the account.
This wont mark them as read on the server however, what you can do as a workaround is to select the unread function on the device to read your unread from the device or to switch off the delete from hotmail account setting and delete them all from your device after you have deleted the ones you dont want which will leave the ones you want to keep on the server but remove them from your device. Then when you sign into hotmail you can mark them all read.
isnt perfect but better than nothing.
btw just to add the delete settings can be set up seperately for each account etc etc

I am aware of the delete function, I was just giving examples of what imap has over a pop account. If you delete a message from hotmail after your phone has synced then it will remain on the device, I know what you are saying but it just doesn't offer the functionality of imap or push email
Sully
Appreciate that but unless you want to hand over your login details to a third party to handle that we are stuck with the above as there is no imap support with hotmail for paid or free accounts to the best of my knowledge, the only item i know that uses imap in conjunction with live mail is the windows desktop live client however there is no visible settings shown on what ports or settings are used.
Until someone can figure them out we are stuck with the above.
re:
Correct, or until Microsoft decides to catch up and implement IMAP
Thank you so so much guys, you've been so helpful. One reason I need IMAP or push is because I quite often move mail between folders. I need something like mboxmail on iPhone but on a far superior OS!
The nearest looks like seven but it isn't perfect by any means.
Thank you again guys, you've been so helpful.
P.s. noticed an engadget post saying HTC desire had overnight upgraded its Google maps to include turn by turn and its fantastic!!!!
I've looked all over..and can't find a section that mentions push mail from yahoo, aol, etc.
I'm coming from the iPhone so the push mail works on the Yahoo side and I believe on the aol side.
I know that MS exchange has push feature to the phone but what about the other standards? gmail?
I noticed on Cookies HT there is a push mail icon but that did not work (i take it that's for ms direct push?)
Lastly...is there a setting or app that allows ALL mail to send / receive vs just doing one account at a time (annoying)?
Thank you!
the microsoft direct push functionality (supported on ALL windows mobile devices in at least the past 3-4 years) works with ANY microsoft exchange server.
this means it will work for gmail (i am using it myself!) because google has the exchange server on their end. google itself provides a generic windows mobile tutorial on how to set it up and you can find a video guide on youtube specifically on how to set it up on a stock HD2 (technique should work on custom ROMs too). my only additional advice is to back up your contacts (either to microsoft myphone or using pimbackup) before proceeding because the google sync can also upload your contacts to google, and you don't want your contacts to get nuked in case something goes wrong during the initial sync. another potential confusion you might face is that you will see the labels set up on gmail as folders on your device's client. by default, syncing of folders is disabled, but you can go into "manage folders" under one of the menus when viewing your inbox on the device to pick the folders that you want to sync in addition to the inbox. finally, the first sync may take several minutes (even an hour) depending on the duration you have set up to sync (i use a setting for last one month worth of emails) and on your connection speed (try to use wifi for the first sync).
i don't know about yahoo or aol but if they support the microsoft exchange server on their side, then push email should theoretically work in these cases also.
all in all, i rather like the functionality because it is highly configurable. you can even set up "schedules" such that it works in push mode on, say, weekdays from noon to midnight and switch to, say, 4 hour poll mode while you are sleeping.
then again, i haven't experienced push email on any other device such as the black berry or iphone so my view point is rather limited.
Simply put yes. I have yahoo pop3 servive and get my yahoo mail just fine on the HD2

pop3 in "poll mode" is different from push email, which is what the OP was asking about.
however, for most practical purposes, pop3/imap in quick poll mode (like once every 5 minutes) is really not that bad, but it might adversely affect battery life.
i suppose poll mode is fine for most of us but some individuals/businessmen might rely on quick email delivery straight to their phone so its more logical to consider poll vs push as two separate technologies in discussions!
Do the folders selected to be sync with inbox will sync automatically?

Hi,
I was searching for this and thank you for letting me know how to do it! I didn't know there is a "manage folders" option until I scroll down (Din knew I can scroll down, lol)
By the way, as mentioned above, do the folders selected sync automatically? Will they appear on the mail tab?
Thank you.

you can create an exchange account using your gmail login,if you have it,otherwise you can create a new gmail account and use it for send/receive your mail in push:in gmail web page you must add your yahoo account for check and than configure the exchange as i explane!
pop3 is NOT push. There is a delay. Depends on when you have it checking.
As far as i know, the default windows mobile does NOT support push email for yahoo. If you want push email, use seven like i did. Worked fine on my hd2.
http://community.seven.com/main.php
It will allow push email from yahoo and many others. It is NOT an email app where you read them in seven, but a tool to push it to your phones normal email program. (what you would be using now)
I have been using it for a long time and had no problem.
