Looking to upgrade radio... - Hero CDMA General

I have been having battery issues and am looking to upgrade the radio. I am currently running Fresh 2.0d with the 1.04.01.09.21 radio. Does anyone have any insight into what radio I should be upgrading to? Any suggestions/recommendations on the process of upgrading the radio so i don't brick my phone. I am looking at doing the 2.32.40.11.09 which is the one based on the Desire.

Flashing any radio does have high potential to brick your phone.
Make sure your battery is 100% before trying it.
Also you will need to try all of the radios just to find the one that works best for you in your area.

Does someone provide the original radio in case I cannot find one that works better?

Yeah, all of the radios for our phone are on
geekfor.me
Make sure what ever you load you either get it ONLY from that site or it says specifically "CDMA".

Yeah, I've read the fastest way to brick your phone permanently is to flash a GSM radio. Should upgrading the radio help reduce the amount of battery cell standby uses? I'm assuming its simply flashed like any other signed zip? Thanks for your help.

It's a little bit different that update zips.
It's more likely a software issue with the Cell Standby - but i did see a drastic increase in batter life when flashing the most recently posted radio (forgot the version#)

[QUESTION] Why flashing Radio ROM

Hi all,
Flashing of RADIO rom is that same reason as my Kaiser?
Better performance, GPS, etc etc?
And where can i find a thread where i can see where the latest radio rom is working correct in given Country's, or are the HERO Radio roms for every country?
I know for Kaiser that not all roms are working correct in Netherlands for example.
cheers

Yes indeed, that is exactly what updating the radio is good for.
I don't think they are country/region specific,... I just used the latest one and my network signal is now much better!!!
All radio updates can be found in the sticky's at the top of the Hero-Development section,... Heres the link though,... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563757
Peace
nothing to add here, except DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY! it takes a few minutes and you may see a screen that makes you think you bricked your phone.

Yep yep,.... V-IMPORTANT!!!!!
Just wait.
Don't want to start an additional thread for my [question], so this seems to be a good place to ask it .
Where do these radio roms come from? How come HTC don't provide them for downloading in their site? Maybe it's simply not worth flashing them or they are actually not good in a sense that they are not tested properly and stuff?
Also, do the full ROM upgrades include a newer radio? So can we expect a new radio included in the upcoming official 2.1 ROM?
AND, what is the difference betwen EU and JU? Currently I have 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18 and the newest one is 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26. This may sound super dumb, but maybe mine is like European one and the newest is Japanese or something?
Oh, and the last one (even though I'm sure there is an answer somewhere deep in these forums): how do you flash radio, in short?
Thanks

I'm no pro, but I can attempt this,...
Where do these radio roms come from?...
I *think* the official updates from HTC come with updated radio ROMS,... Then some clever guys from either here or Modaco take 'dumps' of the update from the handset itself, then seperate the two.
Maybe it's simply not worth flashing them or they are actually not good in a sense that they are not tested properly and stuff?...
I take XDA to be a reliable source of information now,.... If you do your research you'l be fine. I made sure I read through the forums to make sure there are no known issues before upgrading my radio to the latest one.
Do the full ROM upgrades include a newer radio? So can we expect a new radio included in the upcoming official 2.1 ROM?...
Hmmmm,.... Good question. But no-one would know that yet.
Maybe mine is like European one and the newest is Japanese or something?...
I thought the exact same thing, but NO,... It doesn't mean anything,... Apparently it is just a reference used by HTC. I used the latest on my Orange UK branded Hero, which is now being used with an o2 SIM.
How do you flash radio, in short?...
To install a custom firmware ROM I had to update the recovery console. Once that is done, you just put the new radio onto your SD, load into the recovery console, then select update from SD,... DONE,... Easy as pie,... Piece of cake!!!
Thanks all for the info.. And yes.. NEVER pull the Battery out of the phone.. untill you can slide down your lockscreen isn't it? haha

Extracting radio from nandroid backup

Hi folks,
I'm currently with Telus and I will be re-rooting my phone but I don't want to lose the radio that came with the phone. Is there a way to extract the radio, maybe from a nandroid backup?
I find the radio that comes default with the phone does not suck as much battery power as the other international radios do.
Thanks.
I might be wrong, but unless you flash a new radio, it remains when you flash a new rom....
Nandroid backups unfortunately don't include the radio.
Some people find that installing 63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22 gives performance that is similar to the Telus radio (63.18.55.06DAU_6.35.08.20).
Hopefully there is a way to extract a radio since I'm interested in that as well.

I can confirmed, since I've rooted my phone, I've tried all the Radio's available and the one I have found to work best is 63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22 ! Although some people are using other Radio's and find that they work as good as 08.22 so It's pretty much up to you to test the radio's and find the one that you think works for you!
Cheers
Take a look in the
[ROM] Official HTC Hero RUU ROM + Radio Links thread. (sorry they don't let new users post links)
The 08.22 radio you want is there. Download and put onto your SD card. After flashing your rom reboot into revovery and flash the radio file just like you did the rom file.
as someone sort of guessed at here, radios are something you don't have to worry about.
a radio doesn't get backed up or restored in nandroid. but also, a radio doesn't get flashed when you flash a new rom onto your phone.
the radio software stays exactly the same unless you specifically flash a different radio onto your phone. and then it stays like that forever too until you flash yet another different one on there.
so stick with your default radio, assuming telus actually sets it up with a telus-friendly-radio out of hte box...
if you accidentally screw it up, flashing .08.22 radio will get you back pretty close to where you are now in terms of performance. However none of us probably has the original radio from our telus phones any longer because this didn't become common knowledge until relatively recently, so if you CAN I suggest not flashing any radios on your phone at all ever. that way you will retain the radio software taht came with your phone which, hopefully, is better than anything else for our crazy telus requirements.
so go ahead and flash roms, you'll have no troubles.
When I first got my hero, prior to rooting, my reception at home was terrible. I would routinely get 0 to 1 bars. So this would have been with the stock Telus radio. In fact, every phone I've had has had terrible reception in this location. After flashing 08.22 I am now getting from 2 to 5 bars at home. So although the 08.22 radio is supposed to be close to the stock radio, I'm finding it quite a bit better. Your mileage may vary.
Moved to general as not development

[Q] Benefits of flashing radio?

I've done some reading but I still don't have a definite answer as far as why flashing the radio is beneficial. Anyone that could at least give me a quick answer would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Uh. are you thinking about flashing a radio for the VIBRANT? Because I don't think there is another radio unless you want to flash EURO radio bands which is not a smart idea.
But generally, radio updates (as its compatible) provide better cell signals.
Im not planning on flashing any. I've just done some rooting and such with other phones and was never able to get a sure answer.
I really appreciate the response though.

terrable service

I am trying to get my brothers phone working for him again I am not exactly sure what is or could be causing him to have such crappy service if you have any ideas let me know
about this phone:
tmo-us hd2
can barley make a call put sim card in another hd2 and it works fine
He likes to change his roms alot
had android when I got it
put latest stock rom back on and reset all setting
still crappy service when it should be good

Do a task29 update the radio and put a rom... One without all the crap software to reduce interferance from and app or something ... Because if another identical hd2 has great serivce but this one in the same location has bad.. Then its either software/hardware related
I think that it is software as well that is why I put a stock rom on but I dont know if that did anything to the radio I will try the one you suggested

This is very sound advice. If your brother likes flashing different ROMs a lot. Then a task 29 will probably do his HD2 some good.
seems to have not changed anything I did the task29 and put latest stock rom back on first I guess I need to find a new radio as suggested but I dont know what one to use I will search around for that and a lite rom
I have
Radio 2.15.50.14
Rom 3.14.531.1

Radio 2.15.50.14 is the latest.... If its not the radio.. And its not the ROM... Then its hardware related aslong as both android and WP7 have the same problem
Flashing the radio isnt an instant fix.......
Some people recommend letting a new radio settle in for up to 48 hours.
I tried this one _2.09.50.29_2 and still the same and letting it settle in for 48 hrs may help but this has been an ongoing problem can flashing the wrong rom perminatly cause hardware problems if its hardware is there anything I can do and yes it does it in android I dont know about windows 7 I have not tried that not sure if he has I will ask
re read I thought you said flashing rom takes 48 hours not radio
Im assuming its a tmous model you have.........
If so, then you must never ever ever ever..... flash a radio with .51. in the name.
This will bork your device....
Flashing a rom shouldnt really cause a hardware problem........ unless you snap the usb connector off or something while flashing
If that radio doesnt improve things over the next day or so then check what radio is in the other HD2 you tried the card in and flash that one.

How Do I Change the Radio ROM?

i got static on my hd2 when i make calls. it was suggested that i change the radio rom to hopefully eliminate the static. i've never modded an hd2 phone before. i got a stock 6.5 on it. i hope its possible to change the radio rom without modding the stock 6.5. how do i change the radio rom? what are the steps?
i ask ONLY serious ppl to reply, no trolls or negative ppl.
You change the radio just like you do a ROM you can flash it via USB are flash it via SD card. Download thw Radio you want to flash and put your HD2 into bootloader by holding down the volume doen button while powering on your HD2. Connect it to you computer via USB and wait for the Serial in the white bar of bootloader to change to USB and then flash the radio.
Be adviced though with a stock ROM if it is a 3.14 ROM these ROMs are ver dependant of what radio version you have on the phone. They need a 2.15.50.14 or 2.14.50.02 radio. If you want to use any lower radio version than these you will need to flash a custom ROM, but they may still give you issues as most of the very resent custom ROMs are based of 3.14 stock ROMs
Do not forget my wartning from my other post about what radio versions not to flash.

hi, T-Macgnolia. good to hear from u again. ok, i read your message on my other thread. below are my current specs. but honestly, this phone shouldnt make any static calls whatsoever. its brand new. it should make CLEAR calls right out the box and i shouldnt have to flash it with any roms as a result.
os version: 5.2.21913 (21913.5.0.94)
manila version: 2.5.20181424.0
rom version: 3.14.531.1 (04666) WWE
rom date : 9/29/10
radio version: 2.15.50.14
protocal version: 15.42.50.11W
it looks like i got the most current version of the radio and stock rom.
but to be honest, all this flashing sounds risky and complicated. i already owned TWO hd2s and they gave the same static. i sent the 1st one to htc for repair TWICE and it came back unrepaired. i bought a 2nd hd2 and it had the SAME static. at this point, i cant beleive that any hd2s are static free. are you guys sure u dont have static everytime someone talks on a call?
also, this loser, samsamuel, is harassing me and i dont know why!! i STRONGY urge u to ban this guy from my thread and any of my future threads. he harassed me in my prior thread and hes creating problems on this one.
Lol, I was calling you on your bad attitude, not harassing you but enough said, I'll not post in your thread again.
Best of luck with your defective Leo.
lol "i'm not paranoid, they really are out to get me!"
i just want to add a few things:
1. you shouldn't HAVE to mess with your device. in an ideal world, it should work out of the box. but such is life...
2. the rest of us don't HAVE to help you...but we do, and for free! mind you, samsamuel's thoughts and posts are valuable and insightful, and i guess any "attitude" you received was probably well placed because your conclusion in your previous thread was based on statistical evidence when we all know that "correlation doesn't imply cause and effect". finally, your "how to change radio ROM" query has already been well answered and well documented on these forums, just search and read!
and now for the thread topic:
1. having the latest version of the radio doesn't mean it is the best version for your combination of network+location.
2. i honestly don't know for sure why you get static on every hd2 you have owned. the odds of getting a lemon so many times in a row are astronomical! mine works just fine. a friend and i brought our hd2s together from the same guy on the same day. his hd2 works fine also. my uncle has two hd2s, both of his work fine. another distant relative has an hd2, and given the pattern, you'd be correct if you guessed that his works fine too. no static on any of these hd2s!
3. are you using a TMOUS sim in the phone? have you tried another sim? have you tried demonstrating the problem to a TMOUS representative in-person?
4. is the device sim free, i.e. can you try another network's sim in your device? worth a shot...might be a long standing network/tower problem in your area.
anyway, cool down dude, don't be all paranoid, no one is harassing you in the true sense of the word...just slightly using the "stick" approach to nudge you into doing more reading and research of your own. it sure beats the whole process of posting->waiting->getting harassed->posting some more->waiting->so on. cheers

Member ASCIIker is correct as it could be your SIM card giving you issues as the HD2 has been know to act kind of funky with some SIM cards. I would see about getting a new SIM card and see if that may solve your issue. You have the current up to date ROM and Radio on your HD2 so it is more than likely a issue with something besides the HD2. Try the a new SIM and then post back here with the result.
Cheers

Damn that sucks man. Have you tried taking your SD card out maybe you got something funky going on with it as I have heard of some people taking their SD card out and it solving weird problems like this.
I assume since you said it was a prepaid card you do have your HD2 SIM unlocked, Ialso know you-know-what what SIzm unlocking is as you talked about it in the first thread I seen you in.
If trying different radios and another SIM card has not helped I am not really sure what could be the issue, unless there is just a bad cell tower or something in your area that is only malfunctioning on the GSM bands the HD2 uses. I find it hard to believe you were unlucky enough to get two HD2s that had the same issue causing static. Not saying it could not happened but the chances astronomical.
Have you tried different radios? It has been busy for my this week and I forget if you have.

Hi, T-macgnolia. I really need to update my radio ROM. But based on my current stock ROM of 3.14, I’m limited to only 2 specific radio ROMS. I’m using one of them and obviously, I’m still getting distortion on calls. As a result, I want to install a custom ROM to install a lower version radio ROM that’ll hopefully remove distortion from calls. As I said before, I’ve never modded an htc phone before.
Since I got a TMOUS phone, you said not to install the following cuz I may brick it:
Leo_RADIO_15.36.50.07U_2.09.51.03 **(from HTC **1.72)
Leo_RADIO_15.31.50.07U_2.07.51.05 **(from HTC **???? )
Leo_RADIO_15.30.50.07U_2.06.51.07 **(from HTCWT 1.61)
Leo_RADIO_15.28.50.07U_2.05.51.05_2 (from HTC ** 1.48)
Leo_RADIO_15.26.50.07U_2.04.50_22_2(from HTC ** 1.43)
Anyway, what custom ROM do you suggest I install for my TMOUS so that i can install the right radio ROM on it? I want one that looks exactly like WM 6.5. also, can you provide the steps needed to install a custom ROM on my SD card.. thank you.

Yes do not flash any of those radios to your HD2 as they will brick your HD2, no might to it, they will brick it. look at the numbers I have highlighted and this is what you look for in radios that will brick a TMOUS HD2, any 2.05.50.xx radio will brick it too.
Ok the one ROM that comes to my mind when you say you want a ROM that is close to stock id the Energy ROMs as the ROM chef NRGZ28 has multiple ROM versions in that thread, all of wich IO highly recomend you just have to pick your flavor. Here is a link to the Energy ROM thread if you want to look at screen shots of all the ROMs as you might find one you like more than the ones he has that are close to stock. Here is a link directly to the post #3 which has the close to stock ROMs in it, you will probably want to go with the Eergy version are the Reference version from this post. to download click on the American flag and then select the most current version of the ROM you want.
Here is something you need to know it will help you know wich download to click on when you go to hotfix from clicking on the flag. This comes straight from post #1 of the Energy ROM thread, I added the red and blue writing to help you understand.
Looking at the download folder you will find two core versions of my ROM.
* The 21916 Build which is the most reliable and bug free release. It has the Start menu button at the top left corner! I recommend you start with this first!
This is the number for the closest to stock ROMs when you go to the download link.
* The 29017 Build that's the latest in the 6.5.X series with the Start menu button at the bottom left corner and big softkeys. These builds are not as stable or perfect, but they reflect the latest cutting edge technology from Microsoft. These are also much more finger friendly throughout.
This is number for the ROMs that are a little more modified but still close to stock if you use the ROMs I suggested.

Click on my guide in my signature to learn how to flash HSPL to your HD2 as you will have to have it to flash a custom ROM. It has a link to where you download HSPL and complete instructions on how to flash it.
Almost forgot go to here to learn how to flash via SD card.

hi, T-Macgnolia. thanks for the info. i got a question. i like the 'Reference 21916 build' ROM. but, i dont like the big soft keys (action and menu) at the bottom. i like the way the soft keys look on the stock wm 6.5. can i customize it to make the bottom look exactly like the bottom of the stock wm?
do you know if this ROM is the latest version?
also, hows the battery life on this ROM? i need to make sure that this ROM doesnt drain the battery... this is very important for me.

WM6.5 Stock uses an older Windows Mobile Build.. Build 6.5.3 I believe was the when it started to be more finger friendly and in turn has the larger buttons.. So if you like how the older build looks then look for roms that have that version of WM6.5
Look in the WM6.5 Themes you might find something you like
As for Battery Life.. It all depends many factors... Some say the latest Radio has a higher battery usage while others say the complete opposite.. You must check which combination of Radio/ROM fits your location the best and if the battery is decent enough to stick with.. That why most people start out thinking they wont flash roms, but once they start having problems or want better performace they change their mind

21916 will give you start menu in the top left corner without the big ugly softkeys... thats the other build number.
It only shows that in the pic as it seems to be the most popular version.
Battery life with energy roms tends be less than some other roms as they are optimised for speed. Battery life is by no means bad though. You should still be able to make it through a full day without worrying about running out of juice. That said, there are other roms which will give you better battery life if this is a huge issue for you.
Also, not sure if this has been mentioned yet but when trying out different radios its apparently a good idea to test it out for at least 48hrs before you decide if its making a difference or not.....
Yes koolxx as canantroutman posted the 21916 ROM will give you the same soft keys at the bottom and the same start key at the top like the stock ROMs do.The ROM you like the Reference ROM is based of the latest stock ROM so yes it is the latest ROM. So far as battery life goes I can not give any first hand feed back on this as AI have not used that ROM. What I can do though is refer you to member facdemol's "Various ROMs power consumption" thread, link is below. If you go and read his first post you can see from his test resoults that all ROMs use just about the same power as far as power consumption goes, but he does say that all around the Energy ROM does best on power consumption. Go check the thread out it is a very informative thread and project he is working on.
