Tethering issue... - Hero CDMA General

Ok so my Hero is rooted, running Fresh currently. I'm not sure if this is a ROM issue or a phone issue, but I do know it's not a computer issue as it happens on 3 computers in the house.
When I'm tethered, after an unspecified amount of time (anywhere from 30 seconds to hours) the connection 'locks up'. I'm not sure what is actually happening, but I stop getting any data on the computer (Or laptop or netbook) and the data indicator on the phone gets the up arrow (The left one) stuck "on" and the other arrow stuck "off". The only thing that fixes it is to reboot the phone or disable/re-enable mobile network, after which the cycle repeats itself.
It does this whether I am tethered via USB (I use PDAnet) or wifi tether (Wireles Tether for Root users).
It's driving me crazy, because our cable internet shorted out or something and the techs can't come repair the line until next week (This happened last week) so my Hero is my only internet access point.
Anyone know what's going on or how to fix it?
Edit: It seems to happen more when I'm downloading large files...hours of casual browsing of text-based sites don't trigger it as often, but YouTube or downloading podcasts for my classes seem to make it happen more often. This seems relevant, though I'm not sure how.

hey buddy.
i cant answer definitivly, but i have had the same issue with PDANET and EasyTether (not wireless, but i dont use it much) so i hope my crazy theory can help...
this is probably far fetchd, but i hope you can appreciate it all the same. as we know, tmobile stripped down all the tethering apps from the market (not really sure how pdanet or easytether or barnicles survived this) and it started a big war with consumers versus providers, even resulted in a petition app being distributed through the market.
my wild theory is this: even though we're paying for unlimited data, i have a feeling sprint still watches this and throws a cap on at some point. i have no doubt in my mind that they watch these forums and know EXACTLY what we do, and take every precaution to ensure we dont take advantage of it. i think at this point, this late in the game, their easily able to tell when we're surfing phones versus tethering and using "mass amounts of data" (when compared to surfing the phone) and therefor put a quick stopper on their leaky bottle.
any other suggestions? ive just never seen it answered before, and was forced to reach my own conclusion, but hey! maybe some people live off their phones internet and have never had any issues (but how much data have you REALLY used in one session?) so this might just be as crazy as it sounds.
hope i helped!

tether
I tether my phone at the office daily it powers my office network with a speed little under dsl. best way to decribe the speed im getting is that of Dual ISDN. Your problem is definitely a power draw problem, after installing the rom that i wanted and i started tethering, i noticed that my phone will freeze up and the 3g speed will slow down to a crawl, at the time i was powering 6 computers on my tether with internet. to overcome this problem i needed to use the AC adapter that came with the phone to power it and i used a cpu management program (i forgot the name lol) to keep the mhz at 528 when the phone goes into standby that way your phone can handle the packets that are coming in and handle the dispersement of those packets to the computers on the tether while it goes into standby.
after that i never had a problem, like the guy said above, sprint will cap that ass if they see any shanagins goings on. I usually get away with about 4 hours of continious net time before sprint kills my data and i gotta restart the phone or go into airplane mode and come out of it. The data involved amounted to about 2 gigs of data before they booted me.

The exact same thing happens on the Samsung Moment. The workaround we figured out was to use SetCPU to force the CPU down to 266 when tethering. It sounds strange but it worked!
Perhaps this will work on the Hero??

Wierd 8525 GPRS connection issue?

I don't know what is going on specifically but I need to confirm whether this is a cell tower issue or a device issue.
Before replacing my 8525 to another one, the 8525 had no issue connecting at work GPRS/UMTS (well G, at least). I would use AIM throughout the day and have no issues whatsover. Now when I got the new device, after having it at work for one day (and working) the past few days, the connection would say it's connecting but then disconnects, then tries to connect again and then disconnects. It just keeps doing that till it finally tells me, Error in connecting (dismiss or hide). If I hide/dismiss it, a few minutes later, it goes through the same routine.
I thought it was the device at first (which it still could be) but I decided to go to lunch and BAM, it connected without any issue.
Another wierd anamoly would be where I would tether the phone to my laptop. After a while, the device would say that it got disconnected that it can't dial to the modem, however, my laptop would still be connected without any interruption?
HUH?
Is there anything on the device that needs to be configured correctly?
Same here
I get the same problem up in a small town in WI. I beleive it to be a connection issue with that tower, as I don't have any problems in IL or around larger cities.
Jeff
Yes, after going through 3 cing reps, finally someone who knows how to utilize the system and find out that there is an issue in the area regarding data transfers. After raising the issue with them and the cing rep figuring what was going on, he raised it to the proper people and had it fixed within a few hours.

Data charge when using WIFI - WTF?

I recently had a weekend in the UK on holiday and to make sure I did not get charged a fortune for roaming connection charges, I made certain that every time I used the phone online I had a good connection to the hotel's wifi hotspot.
I've just received a bill for nearly £100 for 18mb roaming, and nearly had a heart attack since I should not have been using any roaming services!!
Anyone know how this could have happened? As I said, I made absolutely certain that every time I was using the internet I was successfully connected to the wifi hotspot, so I don't understand how this can have happened but I'm furious about it.
Not to mention that the thieves have charged me £6/mb for a crappy GPRS connection!!
Thanks guys.
What also really annoys me about this is that I even tried to setup SPB's data monitor app beforehand as a precaution but it would not register any data traffic even though I set up the tariffs with all the necessary info.
Hotel WiFi isn't free - usually £5 an hour or something extortionate like that...

But that wouldn't end up on his phone bill, it'd be on his hotel bill.
True, just stating
Might be down to others apps using it perhaps...
Your right that wouldn't end up as part of the phone bill, However the following items will
Weather updates
Email syncronisation (possibly automated)
MyPhone (or any other "Cloud") backups
RSS Feeds
We're any of these enabled? Unfortunatly I am unaware of any way to turn off DataConnection without the above having the ability to automatically turn it back on. For that reason I will never take my phone (and leave it on) overseas.
Will that 'NoData' app not work for disabling anything over gprs/3g on the HD2?
And I'd like to echo the above - chances are it was an app on your phone downloading data in the background.
Unlucky mate - hope you can dispute it.
Thanks for that, but yes it was definitely free at this one (actually a B&B rather than a hotel as such). The bill I'm talking about is the monthly carrier bill for my HD2, NOT my hotel bill.
The problem is that the HD2 has basically been using my normal data connection but was showing as using wifi at the time.
I switched off all auto updates to prevent this too. The periods where I've been charged are for like an hour or so when I've been browsing the web in the evening.

Not that i want to make this sound obvious but, are you sure you was connected to the WiFi network. Just turning on your WiFi does not mean you are connected to the network, as most have Network Keys to grant access (or public guest passwords), you don't normally allow any old Joe Blogg onto the network.

a little extra note to this is that many public wifi spots actually let you connect, and only then ask you for user info, so the phone looks like it is connected, when in fact there is no gateway out past the first landing page.
i had this problem with my old htc kaiser ( i had turned off all data connection apart from wifi) and it would still try and connect to a 3g network. when i returned from the states to the UK my bill was over £300!! i complained to t-mobile and they thankfully cancelled the bill!!
good luck.
Applications may well (and do) connect to the internet over 3G even when you have Wi-Fi connected and operational. That is simply how WM works.
There are various solutions out there to fix this problem, both manually turning cellular data connections off as well as those that automatically turn them off when you are roaming. I know one of the latter ones is on Marketplace.
valid point guys but yeah it had a full wifi connection and a valid wep key.
if I could get gprs monitor (our whatever its called) to work then I could try to reproduce the fault st home but it never registers any data use when I try it. are there any other apps that can monitor my phones data traffic?

Thanks - I did see that one of the auto updates had gone ahead anyway using the data connection as it showed a connection to a server but it was for a very brief instant.
The big amounts of time/data however are purely down to browsing though. And that's my issue here. How can it be using the normal GPRS data connection for browsing even though it has a stable, fully open, free wifi connection? Have I got a setting wrong somewhere perhaps?
My guess would be that the hotel internet link was down. You would still connect to the wifi network but it would fail to route traffic. tcp/ip was designed to work for US military to handle parts of network getting nuked so it seamlessly (and transparently) uses the next best link. I did think the HD2 asked before connecting when roaming tho. To be safe go to comm manager and switch off data connection before browsing next time and watch it doesnt come back on again.
I suppose that's an idea that they may have had a problem with their network BUT I've just tried a test at home.
I'm connected perfectly to my home wifi network with a strong signal, but my phone refuses to do any data stuff like go online, basically because my normal data connection has failed (it does this maybe once a day). This means that even though it is showing as being fully connected to wifi, it isn't actually doing anything with the wifi network and is still trying to do all data traffic including browsing through my GPRS connection instead!
How can this be happening?!
Incidentally I got a reply from HTC about this. It was VERY apologetic - which to me suggests that they know there is a fault. You don't apologise unless you're at fault for something after all!
They sent me some HTC app that they said I need on the phone to prevent this happening in future, which seems like an admission of blame to me, but I know I'll never get the £100 in roaming charges back from them even though it appears to be their fault after I've taken reasonable steps as a consumer to ensure I wouldn't get charged.
Very unhappy about this.
Data connection woes
I have a similar problem - skyfire or opera will not connect using wifi when data connection is disabled - both in settings and individually using "nodata" app.
Does anyone have an idea of how to force use of wifi and restrict to wifi use?
Thanks,
Ehud
I am very interested in hearing more about this. If you ever find out what caused this problem, please let us know in this thread or drop me a pm. In a couple of weeks I'm off to the States for a holiday and I have read enough stories here on the forum to actually think twice about taking my phone with me.
personally i would have manually turned off the the phone connection under Wireless Controls and just turned on the Wi-fi on the phone.. that way it cant possibly use GPRS as essentially it is in a semi "Flight" mode..
those BT 'clouds' (think thats what they call them) charge to your phone bill, when I phoned up to change my price plan I was told if I didn't have mobile internet addon using wifi through these will incur charges
Don't worry - use "no data"

I've used my XDA's around the world for years without a problem
In the UK I've got bundled unlimited data - so data is always enabled.
The first thing I do when putting my HD2 into flight mode on the aircraft is to run no-data. most cooked roms include it - but if not just download the cab.
"no data" allows you to toggle your cell operator based data connections - to off. Which has worked flawlessly for me in the US, Europe and far-east. On your return to home just toggle the settings back on.
The alternative is to go into comm manager and turn the phone off - but whats the point of that? You won't even be able to receive texts. I like to be able to receive calls and texts, but with the security of not running up extortionate data bills.
As an aside - if only all operators would allow you to set a strict (low) limit on data charges for roaming.

Hero Wi-Fi Connection Issues

I've had these issues ever since I bought the phone, but basically the data over WiFi just seems inconsistent. When I first connect via WiFi, it seems okay, but then after about 10 minutes or if I open the browser, it will just stop working completely. Sometimes it will work again if I disconnect and reconnect, but usually I just keep it off. I was hoping the official 2.1 update would fix this, but I have the same issues. Any ideas??

I have had problems similar to this with my phone the entire time I've had it. Yes, I discovered the "Always On" setting under wi-fi about two weeks after the phone came out.
I personally believe my phone just has some kind of hardware wi-fi problem, as it doesn't seem to be a common issue. My phone is actually slower on wi-fi than on 3G. I only get about 600 kbps down and 400 kbps up on wi-fi. Also, while running the Speedtest app, my speeds are very sporadic on wi-fi, and the little needle jumps all over the place.
Thanks for the replies! I see the option. The wording is strange though... "specify when to switch from wifi to mobile data" Does that mean it would only use wifi for 15 minutes at a time then switch back to 3G? That is weird... Can't understand why you wouLd want to do that... Battery maybe...
your router. that makes a MASSIVE difference in speed and reliability.
great example, i had a dlink i would get great speeds, 5-10 mbps on speed test. but after 15 min of no use it goes into sleep mode where my phone cant turn it back on so i have to reconnect every time. i sold it
got a newer cisco. i get 69-100 kbps but it doesnt sleep. its all about settings. search the router ip (i.e. 192.168.1.1-linksys) mess with wifi settings. helpsss aloottt

Data connection switching bug?

So, I love my new Atrix. I do have one concern going forward with it, however. At home I am on wifi at all times, and at work depending where I am in the building I go back and forth between 2 different wifi networks. I notice when the phone goes back and forth between networks or goes from the cellular data connection to wifi or vice versa it seems to take much longer than any other phone I've had to attain a stable connection. Like for example if I come home from work, pop the phone on and it connects to my home wifi and then I go on the android market and search for something. It will search, but then stop loading suddenly as if it lost the connection. If I give it a good half a minute and close and re-open the market it will work fine again. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Yes I have the same problem. Not sure yet if it is a problem with my router at home or a general problem. I am going to test it today at work. Looks like the handshake between 3G and wifi is buggy. I lost even the complete data connection for 3G after I turned my wifi off. I had to reboot my phone.
Yeah, I've never had to do a reboot to get it right again... but it has taken like up to a minute to fix itself at times.
I'm having similar issues as well.
I think that might be a general issue. I came from HTC magic, and it happend especially when i was using Market.

Not sure about the OP, but for myself and others that have had this issue on the moto forums, it's not isolated to only the market. It has happened to me on the market on the browser, on anything that uses data. It will shut off wifi and go back to cell data and then back to wifi. I have checked my wifi sleep policy and set it to never and still the same issue.
I have noticed this as well. I use WiFi when at the office or at home, but I notice (even after setting wifi to never sleep) that it will turn it off when I am in the office and I will lose a complete data connection. Happens on Google Talk, browser, anything that uses data really. It has been a concern of mine (one of the few) for this phone as I am switching from a BB9700 which seemed to slip in and out of wifi just fine. I think the way this phone handles the wifi (by turning off the 3G data connection) is just wonky
+1. Also seems to take a while if I turn off data for it to come back

[Q] GS4 4.3 stops responding to ping after a few seconds

We have a Windows box with a wifi dongle and we're having an issue when a customer with a GS4 running Android 4.3 connects to it. The connection and DHCP negotiation work correctly. Once that happens we begin pinging the phone twice per second*. The phone answers the pings for about 3 seconds, and then never answers a ping again. The phone screen is not turned off. The user hasn't left the mobile app, hasn't killed any tasks or anything like that. Does anyone have information on why the GS4 would stop responding to ping?
I've read that there are issues with this phone/OS *originating* ping - that is NOT the case here. The 'ping' command is never used on the phone. The phone is receiving pings.
Pings are not entirely blocked since it responds correctly for the first few seconds (though not quickly - usually well over 40ms).
This feels - wild guess, could be way off base - more like the GS4 has determined that these pings are some kind of attack and therefore decided to stop responding. Is there anything like that in there? I don't know who would know the internals.
We have not seen the issue with GS3 4.3. We don't currently have any other devices running 4.3, though there is one Galaxy Nexus which could be upgraded.
* Why? Two reasons.
1. The Realtek function which we can call on our computer to determine whether there are any wifi clients connected quite frequently returns false data, and Realtek won't help us. Thus ping is now our method of detecting when the user has walked away.
2. Some older phones (not GS4) are quite sluggish in the ensuing file transfers from our mobile app unless 'prodded' in this manner. We haven't figured out why. It's like they need to be kept awake at a sub-second level.
Some cases were nothing complicated - the phone was deciding that the quality of the wi-fi connection stank so it was switching back to 3g. Turning off Auto Network Switch in the phone's Wi-Fi / Advanced settings fixed that. Other cases continue to show the problem even with that switch disabled.
