This may have been discussed before but I just wanted to inform you guys on my experience.
So I purchased my EVO 6/16 and I absolutely loved it!! At first glance it was everything I expected an more. I looked a little closer at the device and I noticed quite a bit of things
1) Screen was not properly seated
2) Battery life was somewhat suspect (even with NO task manager and NO syncing)
3) a bit jittery when swiping from one screen to another (compared to that of replacement and my Nexus One)
4) Random buttons seemed to have been activated when pressing the power button (mostly the camera button)
5) Screen responsiveness was a bit off
So the above issues were just a few I noticed from my OLD EVO. Now this may be somewhat of an "Placebo Effect" of getting a new Evo. The phone they gave me today feels a bit different. Both phones has the Build (003) I jotted down all of the numbers I could and nothing seems different as far as build is concerned, however we all know quality control in different batches can vary from time to time but not by much (or at least shouldn't)
REVIEW OF EVO I RECEIVED 6/22 FROM SPRINT:
I went to the Sprint store on Monday 6/21, to exchange my OLD Evo because I was a lil disappointed with the above issues they inspected the device and said you are right the screen is not seated correctly. Of course the screen responsiveness worked perfectly for the rep lol. The manager came out and said he'd put me on the waiting list and I'd receive a new one as soon as they came in. I got a call less then 24-hrs later stating they had some in. So of course I jumped for joy dropped my son off at daycare and went to the sprint store to grab another Evo. It took about an hr because of the amount of people up there. I handed over my old Evo and got a new Evo. I asked to hold both in my hand because I read somewhere were a sprint rep tried to act like he exchanged a phone and changed all the stickers inside to make it seem like it was a new phone. So after I looked carefully at the numbers I had written down I held both in my hand and compared the screens. Rubbing my fingers on both screens on the left hand corner and side. As to no ones surprise what do you think happened!! DUH, the damn screen was coming up and the manager says, "WHAT THE HELL". So of course I get the new Evo and I get a brand new charger and kept my old one for my troubles per Manager.
So while keeping the above issues in mind, the new devices is showing absolutely NO light leakage and when I say NONE I mean NONE! No left corner. NO leakage above the 4 soft buttons, no nothing! Phone seems very responsive to every touch where you barely have to tap the button and it'll activate. This may be caused by the screen being properly seated unlike the previous one I had. Battery is still suspect however that is something I am willing to live with because I know what the phone can do and what it takes to perform those task. If anyone has any additional questions please PM me or ask here.
I know this is pretty lengthy but I really need to start giving back to XDA because, indirectly, you guys have done so much for me.
There all different
I called the Sprint store where I bought my phone, just a moment ago, and told them about how my screen is also starting to come up, you can see light around the edges of the phone, as if the screen is comming up and letting light out. not only that but even when I turn the phone off, and its real dark, I can see light underneath the soft keys, NOTHING IS TURNED ON THERE SHOULD BE NO LIGHT ON WHEN THE PHONE IS OFF!!! ya, kinda had to get that through to someone. anyway he told me to call a "repair" center, (which hes an idiot for telling me this) and that theyd have to "Diagnose it" - Or, "Look at it all bug eyed and say, HMMM.. a couple times, or Yup..." and tell me I need to replace it. Or what also might suck, is I dropped it a few days ago, from like 2 feet, didn't throw it, slam it, it was just a light drop. So there are a few chips around the edges of the phone, wounder if theyll try to tell me thats why its happening, even though it was doing this 3 days after I bought it. June 5th, so anyways I ended up calling the repair store before truckin over there, and they told me "No, you take it back to where you bought it, You dont want it repaired you want it Exchanged!
Hmmm.... Interesting, I could have sworn I told the other dude that! I know nothing Great Sprint Masta! So anyway they told me theyd have a shipment in tomorrow, and that No, I cannot get on a list nor could they "order" me one. Wounder if theyll be there tomorrow.

Complete BS. I can tell you from experience that the Sprint employees at the stores know pretty much nothing about anything.
Call Sprint's hotline directly and explain your situation. They should be able to order one for you and have it shipped directly to your address. That's how I got my EVO in the first place. When every store was sold out and it was no longer available online, all I had to do was call in and they ordered it and sent it out next day.

Yeah that is certainly a step you can take. If the store is unable to assist thats just more fuel to take with you when you call Sprint and let them know how you were treated in the store. Bet you'll have a new Evo by Friday lol.

I did call the hotline, I dialed *2 and talked to a fella and he told me the same, just take it up to the one that I bought it at and have them exchange it. I guess they play favorites.
Ya, I called em again, they told me all I can do is have them hold one, IF they have any, I think I'm just talkin to the wrong people about this. thanks for the input.
I bought mine from Radio Shack.
Do I need to deal with them to try to exchange mine, or can/should I just take it to a Sprint store directly and see if they will exchange it there?
Also, I've heard/read that HTC has pulled all the EVO's and is "fixing" the assembly line and expects to have "fixed" units available soon.
Assuming this is true (yes, I know), do you think they will replace the "defective" units after the 30 days, based on the 1 yr mfr warranty?
Or do I need to push for a replacement before July 3?
?????
okay heres what im understanding so far, sprint will replace/exchange my evo if it has light leakage or/and glass separation? please correct me if im wrong, so when i go to my local sprint store i wont look like a fool

+1... Im in the same boat.
Sprint online order center told me that for the glass separation n light leaking I should get a replacement from sprint dot com (being the place I got my phone from) n that going to a local repair store would only mean I get a refurbished evo the rep said "if you paid for anew device n its defective you should naturally want a new replacement not a refurbished unit" so I agreed the phone is still out of stock at sprint dot com n as soon as it goes in stock I was told to call them n demand my new replacement. Further more the rep said even if I go past my 30 day limit n the device is still not in stock that I will not pl pay for anything because it was defective to begin with.
I went to a sprint repair center and the guy told me it is a normal thing for the phone to have a light leak and that the glass was normal. He said he has a Evo too and his is doing the same thing. I showed him how my glass is up and does not have an edge like the other side of the phone and he said that the phone is fine... WHAT THE HECK... no it isn't! It has lifted some since I bought it.
All 3 of ours are having the glass problem and mine has a half blown speaker. Sprint said to take it into a corp store so they could put a note on the account, so I did, but sprint.com is still out so I can't replace them.
Another week and a half and I'll be getting close to the 30 day mark. I hope I get some working ones by then!
I know it is not normal for the phone to be glowing in the dark...

Coming from having 2 faulty Heros and having to deal with CS, your best bet is to use *2. Lately Sprint's CS has been amazing after horrible reviews. Let them know your problem and they will take care of it. I have had 2 different options. Either have Sprint overnight me a replacement phone. Or have them note my account and I go to the local Sprint store to have it replaced. Both have worked flawlessly.

Luckily I got mine at a Wal-Mart in the boondocks where they have a full stock still so no inventory issues there haha

Once you go into the store and speak with a manager politely ask him when your 30 day satisfaction guarentee started. Its unfortunate that you have to mention it but I am sure once he see that you are still within your trial that will light some fire under his a$$. Not only will he think he'll lose a new client but a new client that bought an EVO. Should work...
i'm not sure if i want to wait for the software patch for the screen since some people aren't having the issue. It won't fix the screen lifting issue anyway. Mine is very slightly raised at the bottom barely noticable but i'm woried that it will get worse over time.
I also purchased mine at Radio Shack and am wondering if I need to exchange it there or go to a sprint store.
They finally called me and told me one of my Evo's came in so I went yesterday to swap out my GF's Evo. My girlfriend already dropped it and chipped it up a little so I put it in the box. The guys didn't even check inside to see if the Evo was in there. I also kept the 8GB card since they had me wait 2 months to get a replacement.
The bad news: The Evo I retured was 002 and the new one I received is 002. I realized this when I bought it home since they were closing and I was trying to get out of there. My whole point in returning the damn thing was to get rid of that light leak issue. I know I'll be annoying when I call them today but how did I end up receiving the same hardware version. A week after I bought mines my friend got his at the same store and they gave him a 003 with no light leak issue. I might just forget about it and have my GF live with it but when mines comes in I hope I get a newer version.
What should I do? Is there a way to check the version even if it's not activated. Is it listed on the box somewhere?

Did they agree to that or did you just steal it? And you gave them a damaged phone from you dropping it? wow...Not sure why I should help ya, people like you are the ones that ruin it for the rest of us who are actually honest.
Same thing happened to me... It ended up being a refurbished phone. Check the sticker (IMEI label) on the outside of the box. If there is another sticker on top of the original, then you got a refurb. I went bezerk on sprint and RS and they ended up giving me a $160.00 credit on my account. If you call enough they will do the same. I could get another one from Corp Sprint store but they are out of stock. For now, I will do with what I got. Before you get your check the IME label to see if it is the original sticker not a refurb sticker.

I took it because I went through enough of their BS. If they would have asked for it I would have told them to take the new one out the box and keep it.
Secondly there were little nicks from a drop which you would notice if you looked closely at it. This has nothing to do with other people. I was bound to get replacements since I complained from the get go. Anyway back on topic...
I'll check the sticker today. If I remember correctly it was brand new and only one sticker because I made sure it didn't come in a weird looking box or had documentation in/on the phone box that stated it was a refurb.
Dialing ##786# should give you all the info you need on whether its a refurb or not.
I got my replacement from a Sprint Corporate store and they didn't hardly glance at it for more than 2 seconds (power button crack). Came in a little sprint box, but it was indeed new. They just arent still sending them out with the memory cards and chargers.
I have an 002, it has no problems (aside from no volume control or micro usb port ) - so you may be lucky..
if it doesnt have the light leak then why complain... have you even checked. i dont see anything that you said it does have the light leakage....
why west the time and energy if its ok....
if it has light bleeding right out of the box thats a different story.
i still havent gotten my replacement from them and i know how pissed u are when i know of many ppl who've gone through more than 2 evo's and im pissed
Yes the replacement has light leak. I'm still waiting on mines to come in and I how its not a 002 my leak is horrible.

I also agree. I feel like the only reason it took so long for the OP to get a replacement is because actual stock of the Evo is super-limited. It wasn't like whatever store he was doing it through was just screwing around and holding out stock of a replacement. What a douche.
Ha, how noble of you
"I might just forget about it and have my GF live with it but when mines comes in I hope I get a newer version".
Ha, nice buddy. Way to look out for the ladies.
First off I didn't mean chipped literally so stop trolling for post counts. My girlfriend didn't care about the light leak I just figured I'd get it replaced.
Secondly I was being dicked over. I had to call and check up on them despite them telling me they'd call me. They never called me to tell me to pick up my preorder not did they call my friend to tell him to pick up his. He had to call and they told him that it had came in earlier in the week. The store is run by idiots and YES my intentions were to keep the card. The manager, DM and DM's assistance are idiots. I don't like being lied to and jerked around.

My light issue stems more from the fact that my screen is up, ever so slightly, at the bottom. Pushing down on it results in nearly all of the leaking light to disappear. Can live with it myself, but the screen issue, and in turn the light issue, happened pretty quickly on my phone. Not too upset but I can see why some would be.
edit: meant to add, does the new screen lift up at all. Two people I know with similar issues seem to have it like me. Haven't seen much leakage on phones that aren't lifting, but maybe I'm wrong. Also think a few people are getting a LITTLE carried away. But I get where they're coming from.

Took my evo into the Sprint store because of the hair line fracture near the power button. They replaced the screen for nothing. Hassle free just thought you all should know.
I heard that some people have been denied warranty claims because of this fracture for other issues. So I decided to see if they would fix that fracture seeing as how the phone was only a month old and had no signs of dropping.
Also the chick that worked there discovered her evo had both the power button and volume fracture.
This is getting more and more common it seems.

To be fair, the average in-store rep will probably have no idea what a "rooted" phone is, much less how to check for it. Hell, I went into a Verizon store with my girlfriend to order a replacement Touch Pro2, and I had to explain to the guy what a "hard reset" was. Thank god he didn't question me when I brought up the bootloader... (it would enter bootloader, but wouldn't hard reset, in case you're wondering )
Good point but now the joke is on me. Heading back tomorrow because the ear speaker is quite distorted. Ugh.

No, idiots who brick their phones and then lie about it to try and get off Scott free are scumbags. And I'm not a sprint employee. Dirtbags who do this are why the fees have increased. Man up and pay for the insurance if you're not smart enough to work your phone.
I do believe, but I could be very wrong, but if the defect is induced by the root, then it would be grounds for voiding your warranty, otherwise it SHOULD still be covered (ie crack in power button wasnt caused by rooting your phone )
I reference cars for example. If you rip out the exhaust and put in a custom exhaust, and your radio frys or a motor in your power windows fails, they cant deny your repair since what you did in no way affected those parts that failed.
Does anyone know if we have something similiar to the Magnuson Moss Act that vehicle owners can use for warranty issues, for personal devices like phones and so on? Or something close to it to protect the consumers from being turned down for warranty claims for bogus reasons?
Hmm there's a mobilespeedtest picture in here that my anti virus says contains a malicious url?
Glad to know I won't be hassled for having a rooted Evo when I take it back to Sprint. I have a hairline crack near the volume-down button, dust particles on the top left corner between the glass and LCD screen, and of course the light leak at the bottom edge of the screen

I recently cracked my evo screen and took it to the sprint store. The told me they wanted to back up my contacts before they could replace the screen for me. Im worried because i have a rooted evo (cyanogen mod) and if they reboot my phone while they are working on it they could see the boot would not be the default sprint 4g, thus voiding my warranty, which I'm using to get a new screen. any ideas? should i return it to stock to let them repair my phone?

well out of the five or so people at my sprint store only one is helpful, My girl brought in her epic due to the issues she has with that phone, its not rooted at all. The woman took her phone told her she voided the warrenty (because ADW launcher is installed) then told me the settings/about phone/battery is something I installed from the market and does not count cause joe shmoe made it..... we were just going there to see if the battery was defective.
Guys, it's not that hard. It's the same as any other customer service experience...
If they tell you they won't look at/fix your phone because it's rooted, be nice to them, walk away, and coming back a few hours or a day later and talk to someone else. Like people have said, most people won't realize, many of those that realize won't care, and those that do, just be pleasant and try again later.
I'm returned/exchanged/asked for service on least 6 or 7 Sprint phones over the past couple years (Palm Pre x3, Palm Pixi x2, Samsung Epic x1) and have never had a problem. In fact no one has ever noticed.

I'm not lying about it either (rooted doesn't cause dust). I just didn't want to be told no because of the software which I obviously know is not the cause, but you can never tell how people will react.
Okay, so i noticed a few months back that the hinge on the camera side on my camera didnt fit properly. And it slid around very badly. I took it to the Verizon store and they barely looked over it and told me i could buy a case for my phone. I took it again a couple weeks ago...they told me that it looked like a hinge broke on my back cover, and they again told me i could buy i case-__-....So, i didnt buy a case, but i ordered a replacement back...and low and behold THE SAME PROBLEM...I do admit that the replacement does fit a bit more snug, but still doesnt fit into place in that corner.
I did notice that the hinge on the back cover doesnt meet up directly with the hinge on the back of the phone which means it has to be a problem with the way the phone was manufactured, because theres no way i can get two different back covers with the same defect!
I attached a pic....do any others have this issue?....cuz im not really sure if i should argue with Verizon at this point.
-I was planning on selling my Incredible next year to get a new phone...most likely this one http://androinica.com/2010/08/07/le...e-for-verizon-wireless-gets-caught-on-camera/
-And this manufacture defect lowers my resale value.
-Also im afraid they will try and argue with me, because i dropped my phone and have a cosmetic flaw on that side...so it kind of looks bad if you know what i mean.
-What do you guys think?
-You will also notice where it looks chewed up, thats a result of me dropping my phone, however...that happened long after i noticed the defect and long after i told Verizon about it...so they arent related issues at all
>>>>>I talked to the store reps and they documented it this time and that the warranty will send me a new one
Have you thought about getting a red original cover for it on ebay? Maybe that will make the resale more attractive.
I've always had one of those silicone cases on mine, but having to remote/reinsert my battery earlier I happen to have it off right now. Mine seems to fit well around the entire phone, though it did start coming off easier than I would've thought as I was removing the case earlier. I definitely don't have your problem though.

Dont have that kind of money x)...im only 17 and my parents wouldnt pay $100 for it...but that doesnt help my issue...im just wondering if i should take it back or not
the way i feel about it is that my lowered resale value should be a result of my own faults...i.e the me dropping it....but it shouldnt be lowered because of the manufacturer
not only that, it makes me feel uncomfortable that it wont be as sturdy or anything...which i already know thats the case

Thanks...so do you think i should complain?...im kind of mixed about this...because my phone works perfectly fine...but then i have my feeling like what i posted above, my lowered resale value should be my fault not a result of a mis-manufactured phone

With the money that Verizon is making off of us, I don't see why you shouldn't complain. What's the worst thing that could happen?

Idk, lol...i just hate dealing with reps that dont know ****...and also the lady at the warranty service told me that if i send it in and they determine i broke the phone. That i would be charged full retail price.
Why does the plastic on the front of that corner look all chewed up? It looks as though someone were prying it with something sharp and did a careless job.

I dropped my phone...but that happend after i discovered the defect and showed it to the VZW store.
-I know it kind of looks bad on my record now...but im going to talk to the manager and tell him that the reps didnt document the other 3 times i came in when the lady on the warranty service said they should have
I'm sorry but that does not look like a defect. If it only happened after you dropped your phone, it's clear that there is some sort of correlation. These things don't happen randomly without some sort of mishandling.
I've had my phone since the day before release (got it a day early thanks to Fedex) and it looks pristine. Next time you should invest in a case which will help protect your phone and avoid stuff like this from happening.

It bothers me that you got the same line of bs as I did. I also took my phone in because of a defect. I've always used a wrist strap on my phones and am always careful and OCD (I actually clean my phone everyday) about them. Well, the tiny plastic piece inside the battery cover that secures the wrist strap broke. The sales rep. said I'd have to buy a new phone because of wear and tear, take it up with HTC, or buy a case. I was upset, but too irritated and reserved to take it any further.
Really, why should we fork over MORE money for a case when there is an actual flaw in the product?

I probably clean my phone 10 times an hour, and a full polish twice a day.

If you read in the OP...i complained three different times...but each time they looked at it for a minute and told me i the broke cover...AND THEY DIDNT Document it....I tried a second time...they looked at it for a minute DIDNT DOCUMENT!...and they told me oh well you can call the warranty people, but it just looks like you broke the broke the back cover, you can buy a case if you want...so i called the warranty people and they told me that the workers should have documented it...so, i went a third time and they did and said the same thing each time...So, i bought a replacement back...AND IT WAS THE SAME ISSUE...which means it was the main part of my phone, not the back cover...and so i took it to the store and told them to do a thorough inspection and they even tested my back covers on their phones and both my back covers fit perfectly...so he showed his manager and they documented it and told me to call the warenty people and they should send me a new one...so im satisfied

Thats exactly the way i feel...while its great to have a case and it is recommended....ITS NOT NEEDED, and i dont want to pay money for something i dont 100% NEED...And im glad it didnt get to the point where i had to argue that with them...like i said, theyre gonna send me a new phone, so im happy
I think the most funny thing about all of this, is Im part Jewish, and that side of me came out today...because one of my main concerns was resale value...so my dad told me i Jewed Verizon, lol

I'm happy it worked out for you.
I did exactly what I shouldn't have done and bought a gel case - though I wanted one anyway.

Go on with yo Jew self. Part-Jew self.
Whatever, You made me laugh.
I'm taking my phone in for some repairs on some buttons soon and I wanted to know what I should change before I go so they won't get pissy about it being rooted
I just sent mine into Samsung today, i just odin'd back to complete stock a week ago cause official froyo is soon and i didnt want to start fresh with froyo, and i knew i was going to be sending my phone in so i'd recommend odin back to stock so they dont claim that you've voided your warranty.

Being a technician, I personally wouldn't care, but some guys/girls are by the books, so it's up to you. If it was me, just make it look stock. If you're only going in for replacement buttons they more than likely won't look at the software information. I know I don't
Odin back to DI18,better safe than sorry...Once they void your warranty, that is it,in your file.

Being a tech, if you had a customer come in w a purple line across bittom of screen, maybe 2 pixels tall, would you try to write it off as 'cosmetic' and offer a tep customer a fix for 35 bux... even though tep is free or insurance... nothing between...? Just got a new phone frm the manager after a tech said that... kind of a **** move, don't you think?
On topic, odin to di18... like our fine tech here said, most don't care. My sales girl said the techs rooted everyoe in the stores phones... idunno, do you guys even look for that unless the phoneis bricked? Seems a waste of your time...
Where can I get the .tar to odin back to 2.1? I cant find it anywhere

I dropped my Epic last week, and got a very small crack in the glass digitizer through the Sprint logo at the top of the screen. Wasn't even touching the SuperAmoled screen, just the glass. The phone worked perfectly, including the touchscreen, and you couldn't even see the screen crack unless looking in direct light.
Took it into my local Sprint store to get the screen replaced for free under the new TEP Policy. A hour later, when i returned, they said they couldn't fix it, because "there was things wrong with the phone that couldn't be fixed".
I stated that the only damage was to the glass digitizer, and thought they could just pop it out, and replace it really quick. Well, my 'knowledgeable' Sprint technician, said he didn't even know what a "digitizer" was, and that "there was hardware inside the phone that wasn't functioning".
So they gave me a BRAND NEW refurbished phone, WITH a 90 DAY SAMSUNG WARRANTY. Lol wtf? He said he had never even seen a refurbished phone that came with a warranty before. But my new Epic, is much better than my old epic. The screen has absolutely no wobble, and the keys don't crackle and crunch when typing!
I didn't even bother to restore my phone to stock. It was running DK28 along with all the other things I flashed onto the phone. I'm thinking they tried to plug the phone into their computer to diagnose for system problems, and since my phone was running a custom leaked build, their computer probably gave a error making them think it had a software issue.
I'm pretty sure about 99% of the sprint technicians in the store had absolutely no idea what rooting even was. After I got my new Epic, the technician asked if I wanted my contacts transfered from my old phone to my new phone. He was surprised when I said that my new phone would automatically get my contacts from my google account. LOL
I think I'm just gonna take it in the way it is, I took my hero in a while back before I got my epic and it was rooted and customized to hell and back, the tech walks out and goes, custom rom? I said yea he goes ok, flash it back to stock, update this and that, and flash back to this and the problem will be solved, didn't even blink an eye at the thought of it being rooted. I had another rep ask me how I rooted my stuff and I sent him here becuase my phone was so much faster and smoother than his stock

I would have done it as manufacturing defect. As long as the glass part of the screen wasn't damaged. Basically ordering you a new one. And the $35 is for ppl with no insurance. So if you had no insurance with this situation, sprint policy states I have to charge you 35 for the new phone which I see it covering shipping if anything to and from the warehouse.
And to everyone busting on sprint techs im one of the few that actually know rooting, digitizers, etc. The training the techs go thru is for 5 year olds. Its stupid as hell. I take no offense to what's being said but yea, other techs are sstuuppiiddd

It should have been fixed. We get phones in all the time that have issues like that; and I'm sorry, some techs will look at it like a cosmetic issue, but at the same time, I look at it as, "Would I want it fixed if it were my phone?" And yes, I would. So I would have replaced the screen.

I'm by no means hating on all technicians, I'm just saying that majority of ones I've encountered have little to no experience with anything "technical" about the phones they are selling. I don't expect that every Sprint technician will KNOW each and every phone inside and out, but when a technician is gonna ACT like they know everything.....
Back on topic though, I think its generally a good idea to flash back to stock or AT LEAST back up your phone, and wipe it before going to sprint for a repair. They asked that I unlock and remove the pattern password on my phone before I left it, and since my phone wasn't wiped, all of my accounts and stuff were open still.
