Welcome, crazy!
There's only one (still) free reader that I know of that will read .cbr format comix, you'll find it at the link below.
If that doesn't suit your fancy, there is a way to get around using a dedicated reader with .cbr files, but it takes a little bit more effort (not too much though). Let us know if this solution doesn't cut it:

Yeah. One of the mods here built one, but it's not free.. ComicReader Mobi is the name (google it). I bought it for $9.99, well worth it too, with the awesome way you can click on the text and get it to zoom right in.
Currently reading the Dark Tower series (still on Gunslinger: Born).

thanks for the help guys! I am great full for the link, since that is at least giving me a trial version. I was tempted to pay for the app through the market place but with no reviews I wasnt gonna go near it ;-)
I just got my hd2 on saturday and I'm slowly trying to trick it out! lol
anyone want to suggest anything else for a total noob who is taking baby steps with her new toy?
I just got omarket and I keep reading about cookies home tab and bsb tweeks (I'm sorry if I remember the names wrong!)
I am hoping to soon be adventurous enough to play with some new themes.
thanks for the help and being a nice group of people (well so far ;-)

I think if you can find an earlier version of ComicReader Mobi when it was still called Comic Reader Mobile, you can find a free version. It still worked great in its earlier forms.... that's what i've been using to reread my Sandman series. I think it was free from version 1.6 and before, but I'll have to check. But if you're gonna use it a lot, it would probably be better to get the newer paid versions, as you will get updates and support, and it's good to support developers for good apps.
Hope you have fun with your new HD2. You can find pretty much anything you need to know on this site. Remember to look in the original Leo subforums too, because you can use the same programs and tweaks on the US T_Mo HD2. Also check the Windows Mobile Development and Hacking subforums... you will find a lot of apps there that you won't find in the specific phone model subforums.

I tried an older version of ComicReader Mobi (for some reason it's mobi instead of mobile) and got a warning message "This application has expired. Please download an upgraded version."
That's really the only reason I ended up buying. I know there are others out there, but I haven't found any that are so intelligent about only magnifying the speech balloons instead of attempting to magnify the entire image.

Does anyone have a good site online where I can purchase comic books in digital format? I noticed someone mentioned the Dark Tower Series as well as the Sandman series. I'd love to be able to get those for my HD2.

wish I could help you. I dont always pay for my comics ( not sure if I can used the "T" word here) lol

The version I've been using is good about only magnifying the speech balloons. I have ComicReaderMobile 1.6. I think it was the last update before it went paid.

Yeah, torrents are definitely frowned upon on this site... But I have to admit it's the only source I have found for my digital comics. But I actually own physical copies of the majority of my cbr/cbz comic collection, anyways.... I was a huge comic book collector during my teens.

A *.cbz file is, in reality, a renamed folder that has been compressed via ZIP or packaged with RAR.
You can actually unzip the file using Window's built-in zip option, if you use Windows. Over here on KDE, I can use Ark to decompress or compress the file.
Inside the folder you will find a series of images, most likely in JPEG format, though I have seen some with PNG image files.
These are generally images that have been imported via a scanner, much like the one that is built into the usual all-in-one scanner, copier, printer that retails for less than $100 at your local retail store.
Now for the legal bit:
You are not allowed to scan your comics, put the resultant images in a folder and then compress that folder with WinZip, rename the extension to *.cbz and then place that new file on your phone's microSD card.
The reason you are not allowed to do so is because the people that published the comic to begin with are the only people that are allowed to make such decisions about how the copyrighted material in the comic is distributed. This means that if they want the comics scanned, zipped and sent out via the Usenet's alt.binaries.comics or isohunt.com's torrent tracker, they will do so themselves. You just aren't allowed to.
According to the laws of the USA, you may be allowed to make personal copies of your materials, including digital copies, for personal use but you can not distribute those copies in any way.
Hopefully that clears that up.

I think you're kinda pushin it there posting the usenet and isohunts address.... I know it's not links, but it still might be too much if a moderator sees it. They should at least have to search for the sites if they want to learn how to illegally download.... you're making it way to easy.

anyone knows how to go to the next page in comic reader mobi?

Phantasm Music Player

Updated the DBC so I've pulled the cab that was here. I don't want to post another cab since at least one person was way too confused to figure it out without the docs (5-pg PDF). But at least for that confused guy, the DBC is even simpler now.
... and then there were nine
The user guide is nice and short, too, only at 20pgs not as short as before, but it's got pretty pictures this time. Since I can't attach it on this very old post, I've made a new post and (maybe, if it works) put it there (the UG that is, since last time I didn't have the space).
i cant access to your homepage for more detail,
pls check it
thanks
Here is the homepage of the music player, if that is what you wanted:
http://phantasm.40th.com/
homepage doesn't work, do you have another link?
This is so not worthy of my time.
1. Build a website that actually works. With enough screenshots.
2. Make a trial version that doesn't make me want to kill the author. Seriously? Email 4 lines of number-garbage just to test it for few minutes? Look down from your tower of babel, there are people with lives down here.
3. The moment your database configuration tool (good luck explaining that to a average user) requested for moving and rebuilding my storage card, i just cancelled everything. You might want to make it more understandable. I guess it's for telling the software where the music is.
Edit: Here, i shot a quick video of the parts that i did manage to test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZJa87Gsl1Y
Thanks for the video (I like the soundtrack! ), so I don't have to waste my... er... test the progam myself.
I love this video
Your hands speaks a lot of words in this video

btw:the sound is lovely too
Add throw-scrolling via finger/thumb (ala Iphone) and album art scrolling to this app, and I'll pay your price.
respect for 40iplay..

It won't work - the vast majority of the world is banned from there. According to the developer, most people are plain criminals; this is why they're banned from his site.

It sucks that people come out with great products like this, but then get discouraged b/c people like you post crap like this. Did you really have a hard time figuring this out? Maybe get an iPhone instead of windows mobile. It took me all of 2 minutes to figure it out and catalog all of the music on my 8525. You ask this person to look down from their tower 'cuz people have a real life and cant copy and paste 4 lines into an email (5 seconds at most...learn how to use your device), yet you have time to post a video on YouTube and even add a musical background.

Actually, we're in the same boat. If you read my past generic multimedia-related articles, I've recommended iPlay the most because of its 1, excellent CPU usage 2, groundbreaking reverb effect, which really enhances ALL kinds of content.
However, the developer, it seems, considers everyone outside the U.S. criminal... he hasn't even answered my mails where I've told him I'd pay for his stuff to be reviewed and I'm not asking for a freebie (I've purchased the full Pocket Music, both the PPC and the Symbian versions of CorePlayer and Nero Mobile Digital so that I can review them without always asking for review copies. (Yeah, it was too late when I noticed Pocket Music actually had a full-working trial version. No problem, at least I contributed to the player's future development.)) ...
All in all, I'm absolutely sure you won't be able to actually buy a copy of his stuff either - if you can't access his homepage (because, in most cases, you're outside the U.S.), then, you're a criminal. Just like me and a lot of AximSite folks. According to him, of course.
Tested the demo - indeed it's even more crippled than past iPlay 5 demos. You MUST request a trial code from their homepage in order to even make it run (to pass the initial screen - if you just close it, then, any menu operation will result in an immediate exit). This completely sucks.
All in all, it's a no-go for the Multimedia Bible either.

G1 proof of concept - html, css, php web design

Ok, so this is a little something that I threw together simply to test weather the G1 could be used to fully create a website. No other means were used. No pc or mac... everything was written using the apps available on the Android market.
This may be a useless thread, and if it's in the wrong place, feel free to move. I just had to show you guys. I'm not a developer, but I do enjoy coding websites, and the G1 presented me with a nice challenge. Hit the link below to see the page.
http://www.zeldainmypocket.co.uk/files/test.html
The css is pretty basic, but it is just a proof of concept page so far. There is no char encoding or doctype present at the moment, so it might look a little off in some older browsers.
thats really amazing to do it all from a phone
I'll be adding some images and fancy effects at some point. I'll also be sticking some php in there in order to set up a mini blog. Android really does provide everything you need to create a page... I've just not gotten too technical yet. I will though, because I see no reason why an entire site couldn't be written the same way.
I don't see the point of this. At it's core, a webpage is nothing more than text (code) - so acting as though the validation of the webpage somehow has to do with it being written on a G1 is kind of silly.
If you can write text, and FTP that info, of course you can write an entire website. In fact, you could easily, using the G1 browser - create an account with a host like hostgator, go through the template creation, and make an entire website that way too.
I'd say you could create an entire website using almost any phone with a browser.
Sorry man, but this "proof of concept" is kind of amateur and pointless.
That's because I am very amateur. I've only been coding for about six months... so, I'm quite proud of it.
Where is the Flash? But seriously, nice work! I cant even get mine to reply to Hotmail

I've edited the text and taken that bit out. I've also added a bit that makes it more obvious that I'm inexperienced and curious.
I actually thank you for your comment. Upon thinking about it, logic states that you're right. But my excuse is that I'm still learning and get excited about the little things.

sorry to sound arrogent. great job btw.
Hey thanks for posting this. Even if it's not necessarily practical for making an entire site. It's good to have the option when you need to make even a small word edit (such as grammatical errors) from anywhere. Thanks again!
You should post the tools used in the beginning of the thread like you have them on the actual page. Keep up the good work.

This is all silly.
Hey man, I'm glad to see that you are working towards trying to make a contribution to the dev world. Keep plugging away and don't give up despite unnecessary critics and missplee'n corrections. I think it would be cool to actually host that page from your phone. There is a server application out on the Market. Get ahold of that and spice up your game. It'll be a good lesson on building websites and hosting directly from your device. i.e. Do a search on the origins of craigslist. You might be surprised.
Now making a website AND hosting it from the phone would be interesting.
I'm sorry if I came off like a ****, didn't mean to. As you stated, the logic behind it makes the project kind of pointless. However, if you are enjoying it, then keep at it - you'll find value in it somewhere.
I've just been doing web development for about 12 years now - so my opinion on beginners isn't really fair.
Does anybody know the name of the server app on the market? i've looked, but there are a few server type things on there. Also, would that mean that my phone is ACTUALLY hosting the page if I used the server app. Like, if someone viewed the page, would they actually be viewing it through my G1, or be connected to it?
Web Server be Mamoru Tokashiki but its for photos and its set to a random port i think read more in the description.

eBooks

I downloaded the ''Bookworm'' app from Market Place today. I've wanted an ebook reader on the HD2 for a while now, just never got round to it. I just wondered if anyone knew of any websites where I could download ebooks, preferably free ones!
Thx.
i dont know if your programm can read the offered formats (the ebook tab in 6.5.x roms can), but you can try the gutenberg project. they republish books that are free of copyrights because they are older then 70 years. so dont expect actual stuff, but a lot of classics.

Yes, you're right, but I'm not into classic novels, I just want a straightforward book to read. I prefer non-fiction, auto-biographies etc.

ebooks
i like fiction ebooks
Free books won't usually be real books or good books because it costs money to publish books, etc. and free doesn't cover those costs. You can download books for free but that is considered warez and we are not allowed to post that on the website. But just search on google for files such as .mobi, .pdf, .epub, and others like that...
as for free books - there's at least one author who publishes for free and earns a living on it: Cory Doctorow

[Q] Recommended Books for a Budding Developer

Hi All,
Can anyone recommend the best books/reading materials for Android Development? I've always wanted to have this as a hobby but have no clue where to begin.
Thanks!
Kind of depends on what your background on programming is, to see what you could start with.
Apress Pro Android 3 might be a good choice if you already know the basics, otherwise just follow the online tutorials you're provided with when you install the SDK. Those tutorials are good enough to get you on your feet.
The market has some excellent books from O'Reilly that're only 3-5 dollars and have NO DRM, you can export to epub and use on any device you have. Pick up a few of them if you want. For that price and being that open I couldn't resist.

[Q] Any tools for making interactive presentation for N10?

Hello guys
Please excuse me if I'm posting it in the wrong place. I'm not very sure where to turn for assistance, and I hope you would be so kind
to share your expertise.
My dad runs a small tobacco shop. Even tho there are only two tables and 8 chairs, people like to hang out there. Almost daily, my dad
needs to explain the difference between varies cigars, pipes design and materials etc... This is very time consuming and repetitive, and he
is the only person running the shop.
I have experience with design, but not programming. So I wanted to develop a presentation with list of products, description, ratings, maybe include some videos he gets from his suppliers and the like. I don't know how to make it into an app, and he can't afford to have custom design and develop app just for that one Nexus 10 he owns.
Are you aware of any tools, apps or ways to port stuff designed in any of the Adobe product to a tablet? Make it interactive to a degree without actually building of a full blown app just for that?
Thank you very much for taking the time to read,
have a great day ahead
regards
Seba
Seba,
I suspect you will get various fancy tool answers but a thought is to create a web page with links to video(s)/pictures and keep the web page plus video/pictures on the Nexus 10's sdcard. Most browsers can read and display a local html file. All links (html, jpg, videos) would be relative to the directory you store the first (index) html file.
Sometimes a KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) solution can serve you very well. Many Web page authoring tools are free and all the development can be done and mostly tested on a regular PC/MAC. Then just copy the files to the Nexus 10 SD card for final testing.
Just a thought, again I do not know if Nexus 10 browsers can display local html files as I have not tried it myself. You can test that fairly easily. I would create a very simple web page with some text, and include an image link and a video file link, then you would know.
