\windows\startup\*.* What can go? - HD2 General

I know that HTC and carriers put stuff in startup that may have no benefit to the normal user. I have removed the following, and wondering if I am missing anything, since all seems to be working fine.
Instant Forward
PKG
POUTLOOK
SyncManager
What are each of these "supposed" to do?
Thanks
Edit: just flashed new TMO US ROM 2.13. two new processes are running:
siHome.exe
siwatcher.exe
they have something to do with the new Tmo app "MyAccount" which gives you direct access to your online account info; minutes used, etc. I killed both with no problems. MyAccount will not load, but this is ok for me. I can't find how the processes are initially loaded, and have to kill them each time I restart.
Anybody know where these are loaded; registry?

would like to know too...

I too would like to know what is safe to kill off

i was also wondering about this so what i did was create a folder in the windows directory called "startupbackup"
\\windows\startupbackup\
and moved everything from the \\windows\startup folder into the folder i created. everything is working as normal and so far i havent had any problems or missing anything when i bootup. the only file i left in the original startup folder was HTCStartUp because i think maybe its what starts up HTC Sence or something? either way its safe to clear everything from the folder and not worry about your phone not starting up. i just did made the backup for those "just incase" times...

Nope! Don't need that one either. I read somewhere that HTCStartup runs some file hat dosen't exist. May have been there for carrier to start some process?? I took it out a long time ago, and no problems.
I did however find that bluetooth will not work if I took out BTTrayCE.lnk which runs \windows\BTTray.exe

I know you need to delete/rename a file in the windows folder, but wich one is it? (saw the answer on the forum before, don;t know where it is)
Tried search no luck.
some one?
Have you installed a phone skin (Eten dialler etc.)?
If so, this is what's causing your problem.
I just renamed the Mfc80u.dll file in the Windows directory to something else, and the problem was resolved.
@jagroom Thanks !!!!!! Man did you make my day.
that had happened to my phone also. it would just like freeze when i would try to see my pics. so i just hard reseted it. so i can get a fresh running phone

this is happening to mine as well...how do i go about renaming that file. its greyed out.
thanks in advance. looking forward to a quick reply, i really miss this feature
i tried renaming it with total commander. but i cant even get it away from "read only" so that i can rename it. any ideas?
Do all dialer skins create this glitch? I am not in the business of renaming files I'm not familiar with. I wouldn't want to mess something up.

help...tried to boot in safe mode, now everything is gone

as i said, i tried to boot using that Monocube Safemode program and it locked up during the boot. when it finally booted up, it went through the set up process like a new install (align the screen, set time zone, install themes, ect...). now, its like the Program Files folder is empty, but anything that was located in other places on the phone, like ring tones in the Windows folder, or shortcuts i had to manually place in the Start menu folder seem to still be there. also, i dont think everything is completely gone, because a memory check shows my Storage and Program memory to be at the same numbers they were before the "reset". its like everything is still there, but hidden somehow.
any ideas on how to find my stuff, or where it might have gone?
sounds like a partial "hard reset" - I had that a few times...
always did a hard reset after that and installed everything again.
ok, for some reason, almost everything but the actual Windows folder was moved into the Windows/StartUp folder. i got almost everything back in place, i am just trying to figure out how to move the .vol files since the new ones that were created are "in use"

help noone should run this program
i am now stuck in safe mode and cannot get out.
anyone know how to fix this.
i am very upset my phone has no today screen touchfl wont run no keyboards
i could cry

[Q] weird dissapearing act

This is strange, I have a file that keeps dissapearing! I keep a .pls file for one of my local radio stations in a "My Documents" folder on my storage card. I usually tap the file and it opens in TCPMP and streams the station. Or I can open TCPMP and browse to the file. Every so often, the file will be missing. The first time it happened I thought I had deleted it accidentally, but it has happened several times now. I can't seem to trace it to anything i'm doing like soft resets or program installs. I just recently upgraded to the latest Energy ROM but I always take my cards out before I flash and it was there when I checked afterward. Sometimes TCPMP will crash when i try to play it but the file will still be there. All other files in that folder stay in place. Anyone got any idea what could be causing that.

Make sure you change the view option on your computer to show hidden files. File's just don't disappear. If it really is, then that's weird and I would love to know what it causing it as well.

Just make sure you're connected via active sync and not disc drive mode when you go search for it that way. Also, just to be certain....you're sure you're looking in the My Documents folder on the SD card, and not the one on the phone, correct?
could it be that the my docs folder is being synced, but only in one direction, so the file on the phone is being deleted because it isn't in my docs on the pc?
just a thought.
maybe store it somewhere else for a while, see if it continues to vanish.

Check, all my computers are set to show hidden files, and I agree files usually don't disappear.

check and double check. I actually did it both ways, I connected as a drive and through active sync just to be sure.

I think you might be on to something...gonna put the file back and sync with both pc's I use and see if It does it. But....I have other files in that same folder some of which are recent and they are not going anywhere...

sync'd with both pc's one windows 7 and the other XP, and did soft reset....file is still there....will update when/if it happens again...
ok, happened again. Noticed it this morning. Can't search right now but will later. The only big change I've made recently is adding android to the root of the SD card, not sure how/if that could affect a file in a sub folder. I have not sync'd since i last noticed the file there. I have not installed or uninstalled any apps (aside from android) since i last noticed it. I have not deleted any files from that folder although i have moved a few. I've been very cautious around that folder. I have also not used TCPMP since I last saw it. I have no clue why this file moves/dissapears but i'm determined to figure it out. any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?
I know when it happens
It has to do with Android, I don't know why. It's been a while because I haven't installed an Android build to my SD card in a while. I just noticed both files there yesterday. Last night I tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747492 Android build, but couldn't get the internet to work. I then decided to delete only the folders that Android installed after the initial boot. The two .pls files I'm concerned with are located at SDCard\My Documents\file.pls. And the "My documents" folder is otherwise intact. I have not checked exactly where/when in the process the files get deleted/removed and I can still not rule out user error, but I know i did not go into that folder and delete anything when I deleted the Android folders soo....Now that I know it's for sure related to android I can recreate the process and determine at which step the files go away. to be continued...
Did everything over again tonight and, unbelievably, the files disappeared after the first time I ran android. I have no clue how or why but that's exactly what happened. I copied the files back to Storage Card\My Documents\ , plugged in usb and let active sync connect. the files were still there. I then copied over the Android files, and checked again. both files still there. Restarted the device, checked for the files still there. Navigated to the android folder, ran clrcad and haret and android started. Did the initial setup and let android load completely. I then restarted the phone, checked for the files and they were gone . They were the only files gone. Why would android delete those two files??

actually finding out what it's looking for in the card is the key for fixing the problem.. like for example, if it's looking for the rootfs.img, then that means it's looking for the wrong folder and/or you have to edit your boot parameter to correct it or move certain files to the folder to get it working correctly.. so make a note of what it's looking for when you boot it up again and then come back here and let us know to get a better response on how to fix your problem
It's booting that there is no Rootfs.img in the SD but i checked it, even tried putting new rootfs file and deleting the old one... same thing happened. I can only get into Android on First boot any after that it gives me no bootfs.img in SD error ...
I'm having the same problem. I have tried restarting immediately after booting into linux without loading any apps and I have tried downloading apps. It will always boot correctly the first time and then it will freeze at Root.fs
One Solution I found is that when you go into the SD card and delete the Android folder it works again... so far there is no harm to anything yet, all you do is delete the android folder then restart haret file again and you are back into your android OS with everything saved the way you left it... must be something in the startup files in a lot of these builds. anyways if anyone knows how to fix it without deleting the android folder please let us know.

hmmmm.. why do you have to delete the Android folder?? what android build are you using?? where did you extract the Android build on your card?? is the haret.exe and clrcad.exe inside the same folder as the initrd.gz, rootfs.img, data.img etc??? one way to find out is make sure you extract the "Android" folder on the root of your microSD card.. also, make sure that there's no subfolder named "Android" inside the "Android" folder, as i know some build compresses the Android folder inside another android folder or sometimes inside the folder of the builds name.. also, copy and paste your startup here so we can see what folder is it looking for on your android build.. because, if you're getting the can't find the rootfs.img error, it means that it's searching for the wrong location or the haret.exe is not inside the android folder or in the same folder as your rootfs.img and initrd.gz etc..
Are u running directly off root? I think the builds you are running are expecting to run within an android directory off root?

The problem is very easy. When you have the USB cable connected on an active connection to the PC, most WM-roms will not show the storage card on the phone itself. Try a normal powersource, not a computer, and it should work just fine.
Right now i was looking for a plugin/hack so the storage card stays visible even though there is a computer-connection. I know some roms do this, but can't find the individual files to do so.

Manual backup of certain data

Hi Everyone, as the title suggest this is about manually backing up your data from installed apps
Theres nothing complicated about it but it is a bit time consuming to start with, ive tried this on several programs, using the following process,
Back up the data,
Uninstalling the program,
Restart,
Install the program,
Running the program to confirm the previous data had gone,
Put the backup back in place,
Finally running the program again to confirm the old data was back.
first things first, you will need windows phone device manager
http://www.touchxperience.com/
now, use the file explorer and navigate to your "Applications\data folder
within here you will find everything you have installed listed as numbers and letters
the time consuming part is trying to work out what is what. The folder your looking for within each folder is called "IsolatedStore" that contains everything as far as i can see for that app
Simply transfer that folder to your PC,
To use it again, simply install the app, then copy the backup back overwriting whats there.
Cache and History dont seem to copy but ive not found an issue as yet with this
Ive not tried this after a full reset
Ive not looked for a way of doing this with SMS messages, i doubt it will be in the same location but its possible i suppose if you can find it
anyhow, I might just give NoDo a try now that i can "backup" my important data
was also thinking that perhaps this could be intigrated in to windows phone device manager, ive tried installing and removing an app several times and its always used the same folder name, i dont know if this is the case across devices, but if it is, potentially a database could be used... just a thought
OR!
just wait for the new version of windows phone device manager
which ive just been told will contain a back up utility!
i think it will hit beta users soon-ish
backing up sms etc seems to be a big obstacle to people using WP7 full time.
Hope this is included.

yeah that is a pain, ive been searching all damn night to see if i can find where they are but so far nothing, im guessing its within some protected area or within one of the DB files which cant be copied off.
wheres the pst files when you need them, MS have always managed to hide them in odd places
anyhow, perhaps im missing something, if not, then maybe sms backup will not be apart of his program because im buggered if i can find the things!.
SMS backup
Sorry to bump this thread but I thought I would add a link to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16490860&postcount=29 where you can backup SMS.
Just for completeness!
