radio no reception (crap)

thought i'd try out the radio today, its rubbish i think it picked up 1 station (classic fm) anyone else experiencing this

Where you using a headset or headphones?
Wired headsets / headphones act as an antenna for the radio.

The reception is weak compared to other hansets having radio capability.

poor FM Reception
Hi
Very poor reception , using the same Headphones with my Sansa Fuze and the HD2 I can only set the same station manualy, the automatic search does not store all stations I have on my Sansa,
and the Signal is very bad (even in Mono)

Yep, totally dire, worst of any phone I've had. As bad as to equate to not having a radio.

i cant get any stations on mine.

personally, I don't listen to radio much.

I have to agree.
With the included headset, the radio is pathetically poor to the point of being useless. It is a great shame but I rarely use the feature anyway.

HD2 FM radio is super crappy!

I cannot pick up even ONE station in my location by scanning, or manual input. Just static. Is it really that bad?
My previous Symbian phone's FM radio pulled in at least 14 stations automatically.
Is it that bad, or am I doing something wrong?
Using stock headset, btw.

I just tryed the fm radio for the first time, i live in a area with bad reception and i get 4 stations with my hd2, the same as I get in my VW T5. So it works ok for me.

as standard it doesn't pick up many for me and if I stand too far away from the windows I lose half of them. verdict 3/10
with the de emphasis tweak in bsb tweaks I get a little better.maybe 5/10

Compared to my old HD, my HD2 FM receiver performance is also really bad. I can listen to only a few stations with HD2 where I was easily having more than 20 with the HD. Any improvement suggestion is more than welcome.

i get the same number (13) in the same place inside house. bsb tweak on. hd2 earphones. reception quality is actually better than my hd (less static noise - cleaner sound).
edit: changing stations over earphone's remote is much better than actual buttons in the radio app. there is no clicking noise that way! try it.

There must be something wrong that is more general than just living in an area with weak fm radio coverage. I used an FM transmitter together with my mp3 player to transmit some music to my HD2 and it wasn't able to pickup even a little bit of it, despite having a 1mW radio transmitter only 20 cm away. I tried both, the stock headset and another one.
Also, the static sounds exactly the same, no matter what frequency the tunes is set to. That's unusual, cause there tend to be different kinds of disturbance in different parts of the FM band, so you would expect the static to change as well as you change the frequency, wouldn't you? It's almost like the HD2 tuner is not changing it's frequency at all!
Those of you who can't receive anything at all: Could you please repeat my experiment with the FM transmitter an post your results here? Thanks!

have you tried power radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531600 a lot better app. edit currently not supporting hd2.

yes i struggle to pick up any station at all with any headphones plugged in even large hd595's or sure se410

Iphone FM radio? Does that exist?
Isn't she just using a streaming radio via 3g connection or wifi?
In which case, there are a lot of streaming radio programs for windows mobile as well. Better music than what the radio stations play here, haha.
Going back, the HD2 radio seem to have weak reception for me as well.

1.) on my HD2 i have a brilliant FM-Radio quality
the position of the cable of the earphones is not
important. Currently I have the artemis rom 3.0.
The best radio quality i had with the 1.66 leo stock rom!
2.) a real FM-Radio need a 0,7m long antenna dependent on the wavelenght. It is not possible to include this in a mobile phone. Its just physics. An iphone has no FM radio. It's just using the internet connection for a radio stream.
So install the newest Leo Stock Rom 1.66 and you will have a lot of fun with your real FM radio

I use 1.66 stock, and compare to my old touch pro. HD2 FM reception = very2 bad.

Don't bother the built-in FM radio. It's battery drainer. In order to get best reception, you need to be at higher ground level (5-story and above...?)

All that's great, but pretty embarrassing that a $150 Symbian smartphone performed multiple times better with literally any kind of headphones.
As much as I hated the OS, it had a good radio.

hmm i dont know the quality of TP but compared to my old HD its a bit better radio signal. some additional infos i forgot:
i am using the german 1.66 and turned on the tweak in bsb tweaks.
in austria the ukw band is between 88Mhz and 108mhz.
i think the problem is the fm radio driver. on the old stockrom (1.48 as i remember) i had a very bad reception.

iPhone do not have a FM radio.
So of course, web radio is better if you have internet.

I am quite lucky. Mine only detects 6 radios and my favourite one is one of them ;-)
FMRadio with G-Alarm. Best thing ever ;-)
edit. Ah actually I tried to find some more manually and did!
No FM radio on the Iphone really?? ahah take that Apple! ;-)

I've had maybe ten phones with FM radio since I went smartphone about five years ago, and none of them were even close to my 20 year old Sony pocket radio. For some reason phone makers can't create a radio that works well outside of the large cities. Waste of time for me. The HD and the HD2 weren't any better...

so true. my n95 had the best fm radio i ever had on a phone.
it was THE ONLY thing better than on my hd2, , but still....

so, are there any alternatives to the stock FMRadio for the HD2?

Hidden features in nexus one?

I got my nexus one exactly 1 week ago, and this device is amazing! I unlocked it and installed the cyanogen mod the day after i got it, and Iam really impressed of the results all you developers out there making theese custom roms happen.
I'have read on the internet that nexus one hardware has a fm recciver and transmitter + N wireless capable chip.
And its not even mentioned in the phone's spec list(i've hard it was at lauch, but was removed short time after), is this because there is currently no software support that they wont advertise the features?
Or is this just hardware which is on the phones chip because its just how they make them, and the features arent nesseseary availble to the phone.
Any ideas? or status on this?

802.11n works with the stock ROM, but it's only at 2.4 GHz (the phone doesn't appear to include the necessary antenna and RF components to work with the 5 GHz band). It's also only single-stream N, so you won't get link speeds higher than 65 Mbit. Maybe they didn't advertise it because it's only marginally faster than 802.11g, and generally the phone can't even saturate a G connection. In theory, you may get slightly better range with N and perhaps slightly worse battery life. I don't really know why they removed it from the specs shortly after launch.

Probably both. Some minimal extra hardware or connections may or may not be necessary to fully use the FM radio functions. But a Google employee (Swetland) stated that the main reason it wasn't included was because they didn't have time to do the software integration, and it wasn't a priority.

Thanx I would love to have a inbuild fm transmitter, that is just sick, I dont think any other cell phone have this working. We just need be patient and hope for best I guess

there are many many cell phones that have FM receiver and transmitter. the nokia n97 has both an FM radio, and also you can turn on the FM transmitter to play your music thru your car's stereo by tuning into a frequency, and your phone will broadcast to that frequency. actually the nexus one is missing this function when a lot of other phones have it! mainly high end nokia phones.

Don't count on the Nexus ever getting FM transmission capability. It does not have the FTC's stamp of approval for such a feature. FM receiving may be possible some day, but that's up to Google to write the necessary drivers and programs for it.

Or if it is possible maybe Macodo can port it from the desire rom like he did the camera. I'm just saying maybe..

The FTC denying the FM Trans was a joke..... The feds are so paranoid with cell phones and cars I find it hard to believe they will be approving many more FM Trans in cell phones..... Receiver....well, I search this forum everyday waiting to see the post with the "Flashable .zip to enable FM Radio!"

FM radio is great, i guess it use less battery power than internet radio over 3g.
I do have a FM transmitter in my car but the quality is kind of ****ty, the car i use at work dosent have any input or aux plug to the stereo.
Since we're on it, what do you guys think the future will bring the nexus one? or wish list?

It may never come "officialy" for the nexus, but if they're working the aosp code future phones, then it's just a matter of devs flipping a switch instead of having to write code from the bottom up.

Nah, you don't, they say that to get the best reception, but you can do with out. Look up N900's fm capabilities to transmit/receive, you can do it without a plugged in antenna/headphones.

Just as aside for people wanting FM transmission with the Nexus One - a FM transmitter with a 3.5mm jack only costs around $5 (Australian Dollars) from ebay, and you can pick them up in stores for about the same price. Obviously not as convenient as having it built in and not having to take an extra accessory around - but I would assume you wouldn't want to use it in too many places anyway. Say the car, maybe a stereo at home and thats mainly it?

Poor FM radio

I have big problems with FM radio in my HD2. Reception is very poor. I can barely found any station and even this one is very silent with lot of noise.
I have tried changing it from stereo to mono in settings, which is supposed to improve signal. But that does absolutely nothing on HD2, everything stays the same.
Is that common issue? What can i do to improve signal?
My specifications are in signature.

Unfortunately the receiver in the HD2 is not the greatest.
I think the dc-dc convertor for the screen is also causing alot of HF noise.
Try to turn off the screen if you can set it to a freq where you normally receive a station and you should have less noise.

I use the radio all day and yes, its common. The hd2 has just about the worst radio I've ever used and that includes cheap (really really cheap) pound shop radios. It's abysmal, and someone at HTC is either laughing at us or was quietly sacked. No way could it accidentally be so rubbish.
Its made worse in android because for some arcane reason Bluetooth must be on AND mono doesn't work.
One tiny thing that sometimes helps is switching to a different preset and back again. Seems to lessen the Bluetooth interference, and using 2g only seems to help a hint too.
For all thati love my hd2, and I really really do, I hate the pathetic excuse for a radio.

I would also agree that the FM Radio app isn't great at all. If you have WiFi access or a data plan, I would use the Tune In Radio app found on the Market to get your local radio station crystal clear and in stereo!

The FM radio is really poor as known yeah but has anybody ever thought that it may be their headphones (as that is the satelite AFAIK). The current earphones I'm using are great on my HD2 and I'm getting no noise at all using Typhoon's latest CM7 ROM. I've had lots of problems with other headphones, but none with these new ones. Just my share.

I was using HTC headphones, cheap noname headphones and now philips headphones. Noise is the same on all headphones.

Did you try with the screen off?

I agree having the screen on produces a lot of noise. Does anyone else find sense roms are better (less noisy signals) than non-sense android roms.

Yup I find that too. It depends on the dev though, I've found AndrewF's Desire HD ROM works the best. I don't know if it's still being continued or not though as that was a month+ ago.

Guys I also want to know how to make FM radio work as the one given in the below ROM works but the reception is not good at all also for no reson it enable bluetooth when I turn on radio and if i try to disable the bluetooth it turn off the FM radio. So can anyone tell me how to get FM radio work on the ROM im using.
This is the best ROM i had found with good battery life and stability but the FM radio thing sucks and more over when asked about it in the thread it is neglected so can any1 please help me on this

Yes the reception sucks,, on any OS, and yes android requires Bluetooth to be running.

Not really reception on WinMo 6.5 was good that on windows phone 7 was pretty decent but on android its suckxxxx I tried a different radio that did not require bluetooth but then again reception was bad

In that case you're lucky, even when I'm in direct line of sight about 3 miles from our regional transmitter its rubbish,,winmo,wp7,android,,makes no difference,,I have a dirt cheap kids radio that I use for work,cost me £1 and is ten times better.

D802 Poor Fm Radio Reception

I just found a problem with my G2's FM radio. I don't usually listen to FM radio, but last night I got bored so I plugged in a headset and fired up FM radio app. All I can hear is a static! I tune around different frequencies but nothing comes up. At this point I started to panic, and FYI I never listen to FM radio from my G2 before so I didn't know the radio didn't work. As my last resort I went to balcony and play around with the radio a little bit more. Finally I can hear some music playing, but it was faint and covered in static (I tuned in to exact frequency). Went back into my room and the music's gone. I'd say this is not a normal behavior considering with my girlfriend's S3 I can listen to radio with crystal clear quality from my room.
Does anyone ever have this problem before? If you have any fix let us hear it.

No problem with FM Radio here. Suggest you try different earphones as they have a great influence on FM reception. Personally I use HTC One X earphones as they have a specific antenna in the in-lead microphone.
Assume that you are on Stock and that you are using the phone in the region it was intended for? The FM tuner uses your region settings to determine the correct frequency spacing and range. This is very important...

How do I change the region setting on FM radio?

You probably can't The FM apk takes the region from the ROM. If you are in the UK, for instance, the 10b ROM has the FM settings for the UK...
If you are using a phone and/or ROM from another region, you may have issues.

I restored my stock rom but I'm still getting static. I think I ran out of idea now. Any other suggestion?

Same problem here. I was using Samsung Galaxy S3 before G2 and there was no problem at all at radio signal quality.
But with G2, I am listenning same radio stations and at same location but signal quality is really lower than S3. Even though you have a perfect signal there might be a sudden static problem and makes you crazy.
My opinion, it's because of hardware not related with headset or software. We have to bear with that.

G2 might have a lower quality radio than other devices, but what I am experiencing is not normal at all. All I am hearing is static when using radio on my phone. Even when I manually tuned in through every single frequency from 87.0 through 108.0, I am not hearing a single station playing. Only when outdoor I can hear 1 maybe 2 stations, covered with static of course.
There is definitely something really wrong with my phone.

Mine is spectacularly good, thanks. Superb sensitivity, selectivity and the audio quality, SNR and stereo separation are amazing.

If that's the case, then I would definitely ask for it on warranty
