hey guys i have the fresh rom 2.0d running on my hero, its amazing i love it, only issue im having is that the phone overheats, any suggestions, i havent added or done anything to it after rooting and then flashing to this rom, i installed advanced task killer to close any progs in the background, any other suggestionts it gets extremely hot to the point where itll burn your hand, im thinking it might be the phone, thanks guys!

sorry ill try to make this quick, yea i switched batterys with my brothers tp2 and still having problems, his tp2 is running fine, any thing i can try really dont want to swap phones, i know freshrom 2.0d dosent have setCPU cuz i read somewhere that having the wrong settings there can cause problems, thanks!

Maybe you can try flashing a different rom and see what happens. That will tell you if its rom or phone related.

I had the same problem with fresh but it was programs eating up cpu and not really "overheating", the battery went dead after about an hour too. The next time it happens go to the battery use setting and see what it eating up your battery. My problem was with Google Listen.

did you wipe before your install of fresh? even if you did I would suggest a fresh wipe and reflash.

Ever since I jumped on to 2.1 ROMs (done many different ones...now on Fresh 2.0d) I've had overheating issues. If I didn't have my sights set on the EVO i'd probably be more concerned.

Instead of using ATK to kill programs you could try autokiller. I used to like ATK so I could manage my task killing myself but I now find that having Autokiller set on extreme makes my phone run extremely well and I never get the overheating. I did notice that wifi tether does seem to cause it to heat up and the other thing I noticed is that a silicone case will help it to retain heat and build it up even more.

This doesn't contribute much, but I figure I'd like to add my 2 cents:
My phone will get very hot throughout the day. I'm sure that it doesn't help that I'm streaming music ota constantly... either way, when it gets too hot the charge indicator will start to flash green then orange, which tells me it's time to give the phone a break...
After about 5 minutes of no Internet activity, the charge goes back to normal.
If you have a weak signal, this will also boost the radiation of your phone considerably since it needs to increase the power of the radio to compensate for lack of signal. See if you can reduce your data usage and find out if that helps.
You can also try to rig something up that will help distribute the heat away from the phone, such as a heat-sink case -- it'd be a pretty good idea to capitalize on!

[q] a few questions (battery, missing market, fc youtube)

sorry if some of these questions have already been asked and answered. unfortunantely, my computer crashed due to a manufacturing flaw so I can only access google and this forum via my epic (which can be a pain sometimes). also, since heros threads are always deleted, I cannot ask these questions there. please, any feedback and help would greatly appreciated.
okay so I reflashed backed snack 1.6 w/ ultimate after testing some of the newest froyo builds. id rather wat until I get the official ota upgrade.
after reflashing 1.6 for some reason, android market doesn't appear to be installed. where can I download the application? I even tried reflashing 1.6 over itself but that didn't work.
also, I'm using the new gingerbread youtube but I signed in and now I get a constant fc when I try to open it. how can I fix this? if I can't, where can I download an earlier version of youtube?
another question. this time about battery. using 1.6 w/ ultimate, I get fairly decent battery. only problem is, my battery stats say that my display and standby are what is killing my battery the most. nothing ever runs in the background, every so often I unlock my phone to either check the time or texts or facebook real quick, brightness is on its lowest setting, silent mode, juicedefender running correctly (battery life: x1.56), no data running in the background, drm killed, battery calibrated and battery stats wiped, and everything else possible to to save battery.
and something I'm noticing now that the phone is charging, the battery is quite hot and I'm not even using the phone. it only overheats when its charging and I've also noticed that its only hot when I use certain roms/kernels. any insight on this issue? any way to monitor and regulate temperature?
once again, any help would be appreciated!

Ill take a stab at these. Reason for you market not showing, can't say? Did you wipe 3 times before flashing bs 1.6?
Also never sign in on gingerbread youtube on 2.1 build. I don't think anyone has got that working yet. Simply clear the cache for youtube and you should be set.
Lastly, I don't know what to say about your bettery.. what do you have setcpu running at? Do you have profiles to lower your phones speed when in standby? Couldn't hurt to give it a shot.
Sorry about your computer, all my info is based on personal experience don't really have a "dev" type answer for ya. But hope some of this helps.
Goodluck!

thank you for your reply.
yes I did wipe both data, cache, and davlik 3 times. I guess I will do that now and report back.
how would I go about clearing the cache for one specific app? I know I can do that when I open up my settings and go to app development but youtube doesn't show up in that list.
setpcu is oc at 1300 and uc at 200 conservative. profiles are as follows:
charging/full - 1000 and 200 conservative
battery < 15% - 800 and 400 conservative
screen off - 600 and 400 conservative
yeah, brand new computer too. all of a sudden it couldn't recognize the hard drive. and yes, most of my info is based on personal experience and creeping on forums.
edit: wiped everything 3 times and reflashed. market till not appear.

For youtube I just open it up without a data connection and step through the process of signing out only enabling data when needed.
If you're missing market then you need to flash back stock with odin then start fresh. Baked doesn't remove market at all. If anything it's the fastest responding market I've used.
Heat from the battery is usually caused by programs requesting cycles or data. Just restart the phone before bed after your initial battery calibration.

as I stated, I have no computer at the moment. so using odin to go back to stock is out of the question as of now. hopefully there's got to be another way without using odin. if not then I suppose I'm stuck in this predicament until I get my computer back from geek squad. and yes, I've never had a problem with heroes work before. but for some reason, this is happening.
and as I've stated before, no programs or data run in the background on my phone. after initial calibration I rebooted it. and after every boot, I toggle airplane mode on and then off. ill continue to moniter battery temps and see if the problem persists.

Sorry bout that, I did read over that you hadn't had a computer. I overlooked it though. It just sounds like you might have somehow of gotten a corrupt install somehow.
Maybe you can try reinstalling 1.6 over top of itself. I don't really see anything wrong with that, but as stated before though. Make sure you wipe cache and dalvichk 3 times each before you do so.

[HELP] Screen Blackouts, Freezes, and Reboots

I have had a rooted epic for a few months now and have been experiencing a lot of software difficulties recently. I am using Epic Experience Froyo, but I have switched to other roms and still experience the problems (which I have researched but have yet to find a cure). I have times where the screen will turn black and unresponsive, yet the capacitive buttons at the bottom are still lit up, and it will either restart the phone at the lock screen and regain signal or I will have to manually take the battery out. Sometimes I get the same issue except the screen just freezes. Other times (even if the phone is idle in my pocket) it will randomly reboot and I can feel it vibrating in my pocket. I have done many full factory resets w/oden. Everytime I get the problem it seems to gradually get more severe.
I would love for any input to work towards a solution.
Thanks,
Dylan.
Sounds exactly like the problems I was experiencing with my Evo. Do you overclock your phone by any chance? Or have you ever installed lagfix applications?
I overclocked once for about 2 days @ 1.2ghz, but then reverted to regular. For a long time I had Juice Defender installed.

Ok, so as far as juice defender is concerned, what are its performance characteristics? Did you ever use quadrant to see what it was putting up? I doubt the overclock for such a short period of time is what would've caused so many problems, but from my experiences, any of these add ons that take your quadrant and almost double it are usually ones that can cause some permanent damage on the phone. I used to run what was called Snap Turbo which was a performance tweaking apk attached to a linked kernal that used to go well with CM6. Well, turbo mode does exactly what ViperSpeed lag fix does. As soon as I started messing around with the Snap Turbo, that's when my screen used to become unresponsive, phone used to freeze, and I would get random reboots almost 10x per day. After I started experiencing these issues, I could never revert back to another Rom or even go back to stock without getting the same issues. I ended up getting rid of that Evo and getting another. As soon as I rooted my next one, random reboots started but not as frequently. Basically, I believe that rooting your phone is going to cause SOME issues. Constantly messing around with it will result in A LOT of issues. It's almost unavoidable and some folks are lucky enough to never experience any issues, but that's the risk you take if you want all the benefits that come with hacking the phone. I hope you find a setup on your phone that isn't so unreliable but I doubt there's anything you can do to completely fix it. I hope I'm wrong, though, because anything you do to fix those issues would be a great help to us all if we end up in the same boat in the future...God forbid!
Juice Defender mainly just altered settings with the wireless connectivity (Like stopping it from using wireless network when the phone is idle). I've also thought about this... I am using 3 different batteries, 1 is default battery, and the other 2 are of a cheap $10 ebay set.
hey guys...i was getting great battery life on di18 and dk28 but for the last week its sucked i loss on average 8-10% an hour (setCPU at 200-1000 ondemand and 200-200 sreen off) i have calibrated my battery twice and still no luck as soon as i take it off the charger it drops to 95% any thing else i can try? thanks for the help

Battery dying very quickly - what to do?

My Evo battery is draining at a rate that is all together too fast. I took it off the charger about 3.5 hours ago and it has drained about 30-40%. I have not made a call nor used the net at all save for the receipt of 3-4 emails. I had a rooted phone but I reset the phone back to complete unrooted stock. I have not even so much as installed an app. What can I do about this?
turn off your mobile data when not in use. This will save tremendous amounts of battery.
if you search the forums you should find countless threads on battery and how to find out what is draining your battery and to extend life.
not sure why you would unroot unless you were exchanging it at sprint store but it greatly limits what you can do to help prevent battery drain. If you dont want to mess with much jsut use a rooted stock rom and it is pretty much the same thing as being unrooted but you keep the extra rooted benefits.
your best bet on non rooted device make sure mobile data, 4g, auto orientation, bluetooth etc are turned off. do the HTC battery condition/charge trick. and turn off background sync.
my suggestion is to re root and look into undervolted kernels and many other battery saving tricks found using search!
hopefully it helps some.
I had the same problem OP.
Turns out my radios weren't update.
Head over to the developer section and download the newest radios and stuff.
I've seen significant improvement of my battery life by using Collin_ph Battery Tweak 1 that was offered by Myn's when I flashed his/her's rom. I had my BF take his Evo to work after he come home complaining that the charge would only last about an hour or two and behold, he got through the whole day without having to charge his battery. This is after listening to music at work for 8 hours also. I HIGHLY recommend this tweak for ROOTED PHONES as I and everyone else I've recommended loves their Evo now and have no complaints...I'm at work right now and I'm at 79% and when I usually get home the battery is either still green (full) or orange (med) charge. I'm not sure if this tweak can be used with other mods but I'm very happy with this tweak as it has made my phone perfect now~~
Could be a Rogue app running killing your battery or radios not updated like stated above.
I recently started having the same issue. Advice such as turning of data and the GPS aren't helpful since the device functioned fine with GPS and data on before. Also if the battery was draining at a slower rate on the current radio before, you shouldn't need to update it, should you?
Seems that either something is making the Evo use more juice than it was before or that the battery is not holding the same capacity it used to. For some reason Phone Idle and Cell Standby have been using quite a bit more juice than they used to.
I don't like some of the software mentioned to try and locate anything that could be using more juice since those programs seem to use quite a bit themselves. Either way, what could be doing it that would come up as Phone Idle or Cell Standby in the included battery monitor? Wouldn't anything else come up under Android System?
The battery draining that quickly is not normal even with background sync, GPS (idle), 4g, data, or anything else on. There is another issue which must be solved. To troubleshoot so far I've tried another battery (same thing happens) and now I'm trying with everything turned off. If I can isolate what was causing my sudden rapid battery drain, I'll update everyone. This just started a couple nights ago for me. I think I'm on the latest radio, but I'll check.
Last post sums up my problem perfectly. I have an extended battery that lasts half the time it has over the last 4 months. Started with the radio updates. running myk
Use the battery usage functions of 'spareparts' to determine what's consuming cpu or preventing the phone from sleeping.
Can't fix the problem until you've isolated what's at fault.
Turning off mobile data will indeed fix a problem of some app trying to access the network, but it won't solve the actual cause.

I think juice defender does this automatically when the screen is off.
In the case of my phone, and I believe the OP's, we don't have any rogue apps or things running in the background. I know this phone like the back of my hand. I have completely uninstalled unnecessary apps like facebook, twitter, all things like news and weather are on manual update, i don't keep 4g or gps on, and I use wifi at home. I turn off 3g in terrible reception areas. I'm not a new user who doesn't understand the basic ways to save a little battery. I'm pretty sure the OP isn't either by his post. I use my phone the same every day. My chinese extended battery would last me easily from morning to bedtime with 20 to 30 percent to spare. Now I can't get near that after the radio updates. Since it's been well known that something is weird with these current updates, I've downgraded to 1.77 to see if that helps. My phone was sleeping fine though, so I don't know how much it will help. Always some BS with this phone.

I appreciate it. I really do. But that is exactly the things I'm saying are already off. GTalk is turned off immediately on my phone from the jump and latitude has never been opened. It's got to be radios. I guess I'm not really asking a question, I'm just telling the OP he isn't alone.

this is the thread with flashable .zips of alllll the radio updates ever out for the EVO.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485&highlight=radio
if you are having trouble after a radio update, just try some of these other radios and see if that helps
Your best bet would be to root your phone again and give one of the SBC kernels a shot. I'm running CM 6.1.2 along with Zendroid 1.1.0 BFS AVS SBC and I can easily get 16+ hours with HEAVY use. And when I say heavy use, I mean hundreds of sms, dozens of calls and lots of websurfing. You will love the SBC kernels. Give it a try.
PS. My name is HondaCop and I approve this message.
We can offer suggestions until we're blue in the face.
First off, the OP needs to provide specifics of what's installed on the device, including rom, kernel, radio, etc, not to mention the hardware version itself.
Assuming it's not the known pri /rom conflict, then determination needs to be made as to what's actually consuming cpu - see first sentence above.
Need to use a systematic approach to troubleshoot this, otherwise it's a waste of time.

That sounds like a very weak cellular signal is forcing the radio to keep searching for it, draining the battery very quickly.
One way to somewhat alleviate this problem is to force roaming, to connect to a provider with a better signal.
"Roam Control" app does this (Market).

Phone keeps freezing...please help

Hi,
I have been using my HD2 with android for a long time without too much trouble. Not long ago, while still using SD builds I would find that my phone would often freeze, this would happen almost always while surfing the web or playing games or while putting the phone under heavy load. Using nand builds the issue has gotten even worse. Every single build I have tried is almost certain to freeze during the initial setup, even if I leave it alone and give it a long time to setup and stabilize. I have been using a stock gingerbread NAND build for a week or so and it just won't be stable. It freezes during games or surfing the web mostly (though upon first installing the build, almost anything might trigger a freeze, including scrolling through a menu). I have tried task 29, and many builds but they are all giving me this issue. Even the last WINMO rom I tried did the same. I am completely baffled by this and have no idea what could be wrong. Does any one have any advise?
Thanks
Pray that you're still under warranty???
If it does it in winmo, try flashing your original stock (From HTC) ROM. This will remove HSPL and any & all customisations. Make sure the phone is in it's 'from factory' state. If it STILL has freezing issues, you need to get it repaired. If not. Start installing ROMs again from scratch.
Hope This Helps.
Thanks for the response. Yeah, I have done everything except resort to the stock ROM.
I have noticed some interesting things about the crashing behavior. If the phone has been left alone for a while, it will be able to browse the web/ play games or do intensive tasks without crashing for a decent amount of time, however once it crashes , it will very likely crash right away after I reboot. I only notice the phone (battery) is quite warm around the time it starts the crashing. I hope my hardware is screwed up, would hate to give up this phone . I bought my phone on ebay, so I don't think I have warranty either. ugh
wtf, there is seriously no one else who has heard of this?
Bump.
Are you Overclocking it? Try Underclocking it to see if it is more stable. Maybe your hardware is failing. User currentWidget to see your current usage.
Maybe you're using too much ram. o.o
The phone will get really laggy if you use up all the ram, so clear it up with a task killer.
No overclock, running at 998 (stock) and smartass governor. Tried interactive governor and still does it.
Its just strange that it crashes left and right from doing anything when I first install a build and after a few reboots it stabilizes enough to be rock solid for all tasks except playing something like angry birds or surfing the web. I tried running quadrant 10 times in a row to stress the phone and it did fine.
Could the phone be overheating? I notice its almost always warm or hot when it crashes.

Actually this is exactly what you should do. Flash with a Stock ROM then Take29 then start over. Remember the Stock ROM has more than just the system ROM, it overwrite your RADIO and other stuff also that are not touched by custom ROM. so if you have some corruption at radio ROM the stock ROM should fix it.
- When I mean Underclocking: set MAX Frequency to 800 Mhz and see if it is more stable. just to find the root cause by elimination

I'll try to cap it at 800 Mhz and see if I can cause a crash. Regardless Its probably best to flash to stock rom.
Here is what I think I'll do:
Flash to stock rom.
Reflash HSPL
Task 29
Flash new radio
Flash MAGLDR
Flash new android rom
So I flashed 2.10.1 stock rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655653
And it did not remove HSPL...though it reset my radio to 2.08.
So far things are not looking good. On the very first boot the stock winmo rom crashed and rebooted. Should I flash another winmo rom?
EDIT:
I've reflashed HSPL and also flashed the latest winmo stock rom with Radio 2.15 now. Running Android off the SD card, 2 minutes of angry birds is all it took it to freeze it. I'm starting to believe there must be some hardware damage or something, this is making no sense.
Even surfing the web in the stock winmo rom caused a reboot, the phone is getting quite hot too.
Having exact same problem... should i warranty it and send it in?

If you are lucky enough to still have warranty, do it. I don't have that option sadly.
So I have pretty much narrowed down the cause of the problem to overheating. I let the phone cool down to about 25c and then I ran angry birds and surfed the web and it didn't crash and I played for about 15 minutes. When the temp approaches about 37-40c, the chances of a crash become pretty high, once it crashes it will keep crashing left and right until I let it cool back down.
All evidence now points to an overheating problem. Especially because it is only intensive tasks which seem to cause crashes and only the more CPU/GPU intensive tasks can cause the phone to heat up fast.
Anyone else dealt with this issue? I have no other way to prevent this than to stop heavy use of the phone when it gets warm. This is ridiculous, next thing I know, I'll be walking around with a desktop CPU heatsink mounted on my HD2...
First post WOOO
I have been having a similar issue with my HD2 (Telstra). I was running darkstone on the SD card but occasionally my phone would freeze then I would have to restart a few times to get it working (or leave it for a while). I decided to install the android desire stock ROM using NAND. I changed the radio according to the recommended 2.15.50.14.. after I did this I had a lot of problems with frequent freezing even before installing the new ROM (so during the process). I did successfully install the stock ROM but I now have the issue where if I enable internet usage within about 5 minutes my phone will freeze (but only if I am using the phone). However if I use wi-fi or usb tethering I can use the net for anywhere between 5 minutes and 8-9 hours.
I also have the problem of freezing just after boot, but apart from that my phone has never frozen unless I enable internet usage. Furthermore, this issue only became frequent after changing radios. (for the life of me I can't remember what the previous radio was). When I have more stable internet access I'll try flashing a few different radio's...
But right now funnily enough.. I'm jumping between my phone internet and someones open network in my apartment block... both of which are very sporadic...
Hope this helps somewhat (or will at least..)
There are many threads regarding this issue. If you still have the problem after trying different radios and roms, then it is probably the mainboard.
Mine was also overheating and after I tried all possible fixes, I sent it for repair. They changed the mainboard and everything is OK now. No overheating at all.

Alliance 7.7

OK, so I'm a noob (to evo) and can't post on the dev thread for the Alliance 7.7 ROM so I'm going to throw this out here and hope for a response.
I tried RLS1 and didn't like it, there was some functions that irritated me so I went back to 7.7.
I like 7.7, I've got it stable, no sense reloads and I love the functionality.
However, my battery life is atrocious!!! I thought this was supposed to help save batt life??? I burned about 50% batt life in less than 3 hours in sleep mode!??
What did I do wrong??
I've been experimenting with Task Killer, Juice Defender and other supposedly power "saving" apps and settings but I haven't found the "holy grail" yet.
I'd really like someone to point me in the right direction if at all possible..Thanks!
Did you try calibrating your battery when you first flashed the rom?
Try downloading the battery calibration app by nema from the market.

What PRI do u have? If you go into settings and about phone (I'm not exactly sure if that's the correct path) it should tell you. If your running something newer than 1.77 some phones have a wake issue where it wont let the phone sleep with newer PRI's. Try downgrading to 1.77, the wake issue should then be gone.
You can get PRI 1.77 from here just make sure you backup your WiMax keys before you flash, you know just in case something goes wrong. : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
Maybe its one of the apps that your using that's not letting your phone sleep hence your battery drain. Spare parts on the market should show you if any apps are keeping your phone awake.

Or your battery is going bad? I was having such horrible battery life with my Evo that after a while it just couldn't hold a charge anymore. I purchased a new one and all is well now.
Try an AOSP rom? AOSP roms tend to have better battery life than Sense roms. They don't have many services running in the background eating up memory.
I can't think of anything else anymore but hope this helps!

Did you try calibrating your battery when you first flashed the rom?
Try downloading the battery calibration app by nema from the market.

Our of stupidity but, how exactly can you back up your WiMax Keys? Where can you go? Lol sorry, feel free to troll on me for asking that

Lol Oh no none of that. I don't troll on anyone for not knowing something, we've all been there. Are you using amon ra recovery 2.3? If so, boot into recovery, go to backup/restore, nandroid backup and then it'll give u a list of things you might want to select to backup. Just unselect everything, select wimax and then select perform backup. It should take a couple of mins and then your done.
Actually I'm using ClockWork Mod 2.6 just seemed easier to me than AmonRa. (weird I know). but ok, nand back up and just select the WiMax info??
Also, v7.7 had an undervolt script built into it that some phones, mine included don't like. Might try flashing alliance rls2. Had the script removed.

thanks for the info, I think the battery calibration helped a little, only 30% depleted after about 8 hours with moderate use.
I found I do have a newer PRI, version 1.90_003
Before I go messing with it, what is the PRI and what does it do?

one of the reasons I didn't like RLS1 was the way they had the personalize button set to open the Kingsrom website. Did they change that, or is there a way to change it?
oi, I had things going pretty well with 7.7 but it started getting glitchy and slow. Don't know why because once I had everything running smooth I didn't mess with it anymore. Reboot helped for a little while but started glitching again shortly after.
I decided to go to RLS2, it's running smooth but my lockscreen shortcuts have dissapeared and I can't get them back, any ideas on that??

You might try going into your personalize settings and select a different lock screen, I know there are a couple that take that certain option away LOL I use the weather one with the app selector or the wallpaper with the app selector. Hope it helps

no good, lock screen isn't displaying the way it should, tried several and nothing changes.
Did a factory reset and the lock screen is working correctly again. There must have been something that glitched when I restored my settings.
Tried restoring my backups and it the lock screen isn't right again. So I guess I either live with it or start from scratch again..
