Probably a daft question!
Is there any reason I cannot use a "stock" non HTC usb cable for syncing / charging. Is the HTC cable any different to any others e.g. Nokia?
Surely one cable is the same as another!?!
You can use ANY USB/microUSB Data/Charge Cable ;-)
I also do so :-D
no, charging doesn't really works, not for most cables. Unless it is explicitly marked for HD2 or iPhone. It seems they follow a new specifications. Older cables do not carry as much current. With connected to PC via a third party cable, my HD2 pops up a screen saying that the charging current is insufficient.
You can use any USB 2.0 A Male to Micro 5pin Male. Basically the typical USB to micro USB cable. I'm using a Blackberry micro usb cable (plugged into laptop) to charge my HD2 at work.
Usually sells for $2-3, or less, for 1-2 feet cable. Overpriced if you pay more. I bought the BB cable from Amazon, though I usually buy cables from monoprice.com.
i have a cable that comes with the car charger that charges the device when connected to the pc but cannot be used to sync files. when connected through this cable, the pc does not recognize it at all as an external device as it recognizes a dvd, cd, etc. in its driver.
I'm using a Blackberry cable in the office and works like a charm; I have the original at Home.

Maybe settings on device or PC are not right?
These cables are just mini USB and that itself has no effect on the syncing process. (I use any mini USB cable I can find whenever and wherever I am and it always works for me)
Same here I use whatever lead I can find, usually the PSP one.
Thanks for the quick answer guys. I suspect my Belkin Cable is a dud. Just swapped it with my PS3 cable and it works fine, as does the original HTC one. So will return the Belkin and get another. Good to know I can use any USB cable form now on. So Thnx for clearing this up for me..
So this may be a silly question, but I've just received the T-Mobile MDA (HTC Wizard) second-hand and without a charger.
The Mini USB port on the bottom allows ActiveSync and charging from my notebook's USB port, but when I try to charge using an AC-to-USB adapter it doesn't work... I've tried two different Motorola phone chargers and a generic one that came with my Jawbone that has a USB female connector on the adapter and you supply your own USB cable. I've used the same cable I was using when attaching to the PC, but no luck.
Interestingly enough, I did get it to charge with the same USB cable once at an airport by plugging it into the Southwest Airlines chairs with the USB power plugs...
So does anyone know? Does this phone require a special sort of charger?
you need a charger that is rated 1.0Amps.
usb is normally 500mAmps, not enough to charge your phone.
I can't seem to find a usb to "whatever it is" wire selling..
is it a standard micro USB port?

yes... u r rite... itz a MICRO USB...
But it can't supply power to a USB device, so it can't be used like a PC USB port. It's only good for recharging and syncing.
so if i want to buy an additional wire, i look for a USB to MICRO USB wire right? no need to buy from HTC right?
cause i saw one usb that is smaller but it doesn't fit.. is there a MINI USB port too?
am confused

Erm yes it can,
Actually better take the device with you. Sellers here told me there is like 7 different very similar connectors. However this one should be the standard micro USB, which is supposed to be universal charger/sync cable in the future (at least in EU).
And yes, of course, there is mini USB. And there even are more versions of mini USB, for example HTC used their own.
You had better use HTC cables. HD2 is microusb, but not all microusb cables are good for HD2. Like iPhone, it takes a large charging current, and many no brand cables cannot do it. I've got a third party cable that syncs only, but if charged from the PC, the HD2 will say that the charging current is too small. Battery actually drops when I connect HD2 to PC using this cable (because my options set it that backlight is always on when HD2 is connected). Other combinations are OK:
original cable + AC plug: charging OK
original cable + PC: charging OK
third party cable + AC plug: charging OK
third party cable + PC: "insufficient charging current"
Be careful with cables- you'd be better to buy the genuine HTC version.
Many USB/MicroUSB cables are for charging only, and don't have the data pins connected. Thats OK if you just want to charge it while you are away from your main PC or power supply.
You can also buy a miniUSB/MicroUSB adapter for charging using and older miniSUB charger, but again these don't have the data pins connected.
I bought a number of 3rd party USB to microUSB cables a month ago for sync and charging (office, PC, bedside charging), so far so good... no issues (maybe I'm lucky). The OmniaII uses the same connector, so I'm using the HTC car charger to charge both.
I bought Nokia's cable (for E71,N97,etc.) and it work just fine with charging from laptop. much cheaper than HTC in here.
if you are going for the cheapo option...
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=MICRO+USB+SYNC%26+CHARGE+CABLE+for+HTC+HD2+HD+2+Leo+T8585
i got a couple from ebay - arrived the next day. - charge/sync fine.
charger from iPhone
The iPhone charger coud be used for charging HD2. Just plug the microUSB cord instead of iPhones and ... voila. The same outputs
N86-8megapixel cable doesnt work..
So I managed to leave my HTC cable at work (2 days after getting the Telstra HD2 in OZ) and now I am on 4-5 days leave from work and really want to tinker with my phone. I think I may end up having to go back to work to collect the HTC cable - as below... challenge to get non-HTC cable to work.
I found that my wife's N86-8megapixel nokia has a similar micro-usb cable.
When connected to the PC the phone starts charging and the PC does the "doo-doop" sound a "appears" to connect to the phone, but active sync cannot detect the phone \ sync.
I see others have had success with nokia cables - I am wondering if there is something wierd going on.
Sorry if this seems noobish but if I get one of those cheap little mini usb to micro usb adapters, can I use it to connect my Nexus One to my old G1 wall charger. Is there any difference in voltage or whatever that might damage the new phone?
EDIT: One of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=380195084986&view=all&tid=147583237025
You should be able to do that without any issues whatsoever. Same power output, different plug.
Great, thanks
actually this is incorrect.
the g1 uses htc's proprietary ext usb connector format which is not the same as mini usb.
This means that a micro to mini usb adapter will NOT work on the g1 charger.

Sorry, I don't get what you mean? I have connected my G1 with loads of different mini usb cables (Nokia ones, printer ones, the one that came for charging my PS3 controllers) and it seems to work fine. I have also used the G1 charger to charge a bluetooth headset. Seems standard to me
I have the G1 and the N1 and got the micro-USB adapters. They work with the car and wall chargers just fine. I even used the adapter on a cable and charged off a PC. It's fine.

A g1 will work with a mini usb cable, but the g1 charger cable is extusb fromat which means those mini to micro usb will not work.
all you have to do is look at a mini usb cable and compare it to the g1 usb cable/charger. The connectors are NOT the same.

Early model G1's came with an incorrect charger that was standard usb-mini B so it is possible that you can if you have that charger

that wasn't the OP's question.
I thought extusb just had extra pins for audio? Since the connector is physically the same wouldn't the adapter just lack the audio pins and thus not be able to pass those through (not a problem if you just want to charge)?

Ahh, that explains it. I just looked more closely and I see that the G1 socket is a different shape with only one indent (obviously extusb) but the plug on the charger is indented on both sides (standard mini usb). I guess this is how they extusb is backwards compatible.
In other words, my G1 charger is usb mini B so the adapters will work. Amazingotron
EDIT: This does raise the question, why would they use extusb for the chargers anyway? There is no audio to pass through and since standard mini usb is compatible, it must be cheaper to stick one of those in the box than a proprietary-ended charger.
I have two G1s, and one was a preorder. The wallworts were different but the connector plugs are the same: mini-USB. I use my adapter on my G1 charger.
An adapter should work fine, the US cable and the headphones that came with the G1 had the extusb connector, the charger however was normal mini-USB.
using a microusb works fine for me too even for data transfers to pc.
anyone notice though that the n1 charges REALLY SLOW when it's using the G1 charger? i'm in vegas right now and using my g1 charger w/ a microusb. I left my N1 charger at home. But from about 50%, it took literally around 3 hours to charge back to 100%. The specs for output is [email protected] manufactured by PHIHONG
You can do, up to 1000 mA are allowed
Does *any* Micro USB cable work with the Nexus One?
Like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/BlackBerry-Cable-Micro-1-0m-Black/dp/B001QATRCA/
The G1 USB cable I currently use was the same price as the above, but it was actually branded as a "G1" cable.
Anyone know for sure?
yes, any micro USB cable. Heres a breakdown:
If your phone has an extUSB port, any extUSB cable or miniUSB cable will work.
If your phone has a miniUSB port, any miniUSB cable will work, extUSB would work but it cannot physically fit into a miniUSB port.
If your phone has a microUSB port, any microUSB cable will work, but no miniUSB or extUSB will work.
extUSB is HTC's semi-proprietary USB port which is simply miniUSB with an audio connector and unique socket shape.
All USB ports and cables of the same form factor have the same pinout.
MicroUSB has replaced MiniUSB and all new released portable devices will have microUSB most likely.
Xperia X10 miniPro connections?
Hi Folks - This is my first post and still getting used to how this board works, so please be patient with me!
I've got a similar problem regarding miniUSB leads... I've recently bought a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 miniPro... It charges via the USB port but the connector is not standard!
I'm wondering if anyone knows the pin-out of the socket and also where leads with such a connector can be purchased online?
Thanks for any help!
`
And you thought asking Nexus One owners would be a good idea?
Try a Sony section, someone there is bound to know.
All microusb cables are not the same I found this out recently.
I bought a microusb "blackberry" that fit into my nexus one no problem but when I tried to use it to transfer files; windows would act like it didn't know what device it was.
Now i'm currently using a kodak microusb that will allow windows to know its the nexus one and I can I mount my phone but everything is copy write protected.
So when I get home I have to go back to my old beat up cord that wont stay in my phone until I find a suitable replacement that will let me mount and access the files.
I bought some blackberry microusb cables on Amazon for a penny back in March (yes, 1 penny each!). They work perfectly for everything. I guess somehow wondercoolguy managed to find cables that were even cheaper then mine

This BB wire fits the nexus like a glove but hates transferring information. Yes I got my wire for 1.00 from a mertine if I remember correctly....I hate that place
Afaik any micro usb cable will work. Micro usb is the new standard.
I haven't seen any charging-only cables but that is a possibility.
http://m.gizmodo.com/5389063/united-nations-approves-microusb-universal-phone-charger-standard
I have been using micro-usb cable for my external disk, Nexus/GalaxyS and my previously own Nokia N97. No problem for charging, transfer files or tethering. I even use old N97 charger (micro-usb connection) on Nexus One before. None of these had any problem.
Micro-USB is a standard connection, there shouldn't be a problem. If there is, it could be due to the system mainboard or mainboard's USB port itself. Try not to connect too many devices through a USB-hub that link up from a USB port of the system. If you really need connect it via a USB-hub, get those hub has a dedicated power adapter.
Just buy any cheap cable, it will work. I also bought two official HTC chargers for my phone as well as some random USB to microUSB cables. All work fine, just as do the cables from my Nokia phones, cameras and cables I found under my girlfriend's bed lol
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I dont know if anything I said was taken to heart please disregard it because I found out that my work disabled the flash drives to read only. It's not the cables fault all my cables work at home sorry
