Done a search on various site but still no joy.
Just got a o2 XDA Mini S yesterday. But I cannot get it to connect to my wireless network at home. Its an open network, with a laptop,3 PC's,2 xbox's accessing it various times of day.All connect no problem.
My xda says my network is available, but cannot connect to it. Do I need to put in IP addresses in manually ? On the network cards section, it the SDIO WLAN wireless adapter that is used ?
Have tried allsorts,
First Question,
Is your WiFi router set to DHCP mode. If so then check that your device is also set to DHCP mode. If not change router to DHCP check that all your other devices are set to DHCP then you should automatically be allocated an IP address. A useful utility is WiFi Companion.
This scans for available networks and allows you to connect. it will also show you the IP address you have been assigned.
You could assign an IP address manually but this will have to be changed every time you walk on to another network. DHCP is better.

Thanks for the info DW, it is my router, popped round a mates last night and it connected to his network ok.
Will check what you said and the firewall
not sure by what you mean exactly by open network.
but are you using MAC address filtering?
when I got the Sony Laptop, I was so eager to get it all setup etc, that I forgot bout the filtering, it would see the network, but refused to connect.
I'm having the same problem. My Exec can see the network but not connect. I investigated it a bit more and for some reason it keeps trying to use the same IP address as my laptop. It also cannot connect to the net to update Avant Go when it's syncing (via my laptop).
I've tried connecting with all other devices switched off, to avoid the IP address conflict, but still cannot connect to the internet.
I'm pretty much stumped.
Setting the Wireless power setting for best performance was the trump for me.
On my Vario - Settings - Connections - Wireless LAN - Power Mode
Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a try but unfortunately it didn't help.
If my laptop is switched off my Exec can connect to my D-Link router, but I cannot access any internet resources. I presume that somewhere in the settings is the solution but I can't find it.
EXCELLENT db44!!!
For some reasons setting wireless "best performance" wortked for me too. Wizard (QTEK 9100 - gray market I guess as QTEK did not register on their site for me). I will still try Opera too.
Kind regards,
Oleg.

same thing happened to my qtek. it detected the network but could not connect and sometimes when it got connected, i still couldn't surf the net. is there anything in the settings that i'm missing? i also tried to enter the IP address manually but no luck either.
My O2 XDA Mini arrived yesterday. It sees my wireless network (as well as two others in my neighborhood) but cannot/will not connect. I've tried everything I've read above - which confirms I'm on the right trail, but...
The D-Link DI-624 wireless router is in DCHP mode. I've dropped all security for connection trials. I've put the MAC address of the XDA in the router, just in case. I cannot find the IP address of the Mini (how do you do that?), but have tried with and without allowing the router to assign it a random and an assigned IP address. My router does NOT have the default (198.162, etc, etc IP address.) so I've been careful not to blindly follow standard instructions. Of course, I have tried with specific IP addresses, default gateway (router), etc, etc.
One clue is that after trying for a long time to connect to the networks it finds, I got one error message from the XDA saying it could not be assigned an IP address from the network(s). Good clue - wish I know what it means.
There are only limited settings to check on the XDA, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something on the router. Any ideas? Many thanks.
every now and then i get the following message appear
Unable to obtain Server assigned IP address. try again later or enter an ip address in Network settings.
message screen shot attached
any ideas what is causing this message. wifi works fine so i do not think it is that.
any thoughts or help would be great
Thanks
Do you have DHCP Enabled on the internet connection of your PC? Or do you have static IP address?
Nope, not sure why, i get this sometimes when i try to conenct to a wifi hotspot that has no encryption but static ip address of a weird range
ICS was turned on my dial up connection at work. i have disable this now. lets see if it solves the problem i will leave it a couple of hours and then up date the board
Thanks
Jamie
Hi I have the same problem
Any Solution?
Thanks
I had the same issue with my mda when i first got it. each time it occurred i wiped it.
ever since i stopped messing around with activesync via exchange that message hasn't come up for me again.
heres some info from another forum, unsure if it will help or not

Hello to all
I have problems trying to connect through wifi on my new 8125.
After reading a lot of threads, i downloaded a program called hitchiker, who solves the wifi connection a lot easier and faster, but i keep getting the same error, the wifi connection appears, it connects but can not solve the ip address with the dhcp server and fails...
Can anyone told me if this is a hardware problem or a firmware issue?
my router is a netgear WG602 v2 with the last firmware available.
Thanks and happy new year to all!!
ddo you have mac filtering on? if so try turning it off
No, i used to have a wep security password, but i reset all settings on the router to factory, to try to connect.
i also have a laptop and a psp and both connect great!!
dont know what the problem is here, but its frustating...
I make it to work
first i did a hard reset, then i check on the log of the access point, and it was going through and forwarding the connection to the adsl router, but the problem apparently was on the dhcp server on the router.
i add a fixed ip, and now it works
still not working on dhcp but at least its working...

I'm having almost the same problem.
First I've tried to connect on my open lan in my house. I could connect, but couldn't get an IP automaticaly.
Today I went to the mall to try some open wifi lan. A friend of mine, with a Nokia n80 succsessfully connected with one of the hotspots. I've tried and couldn't get an IP. Suddenly, don't know why, I got connected, but couldn't surf at the web.
Then I realized that the fixed Ip that I've set before was still on. Changing it for dinamic didn't work.
So, I still can't get an IP.
Any Ideas?
I experience a very strange behaviour in my eyes and did not yet found a solution here.
Conditions:
-WinMo 6.1 on SE XPERIA X1 using different cooked ROMs, maybe also the official ROM
-automatic SE or manual connection setup used for t-mobile DE
Error characteristics:
-data connection itself (GPRS connection either on 2G or 3G network) is active
-applications can't connect to any site (opera, htc weather, quickgps)
-but if IP addresses are used instead of names then connections to a web-site are successful (A direct IP address http://209.85.129.132/ does work, but not http://www.google.de/ e.g.)
-the error is somehow reproducible, but it can not exactly figured out under which condition it appears
-the error stays after power off or soft reset, only flashing the rom new helps
-the error does start after a while (hours/days)
-the error seems to be somehow in conjunction with switching network type between GPRS, WLAN and using the Internet connection of a PC connected with ActiveSync, but there is no unambiguous correlation distinguishable when the error starts
solutions:
-my first idea was that DNS service on the X1 is somehow not working, so I used openDNS specific adresses for the DNS server instead of the server-assigned addresses, but the error stays
I hope you have any ideas for me?
confirm error by my Xperia
Hello yesterday i posted the same error by a rom Thread,
had the same error on 6.5 and 6.1 with skyfire the internet works but Weather, QuickGPS... don't work, hope that find a solution for that.
by the way my Provider is ePlus (Germany) maybe this is an error according to the Provider.
thanks !

Try Entering The DNS Servers manually in the setting try open dns servers.

Hi everybody,
I have exactly the same problem with o2 Germany. I tried it with the open dns servers but still the same network error occurs... Has anybody solved this?
Hello,
I have a similar problem when I'm using for my wifi static ip and manually settings for DNS. At home I'm using static ip settings for my wifi, so after i closed my Wifi connection on the Blackstone my Opera at GPRS/3G connection will not disolving the URL like www.google.de but when I'm using the IP it works fine. My workaround is to delete the static IP settings and the entry for DNS and the the desolving of the URL is working.
problem solved

thanks bieza, that worked for me as well . i had only static IP (with auto DNS) for WiFi, and dns was failing for cellular connection (EDGE). changed wifi IP back to auto, and problem fixed.
interestingly, when DNS was not working for EDGE, i could use ICS as usual. i was browsing on PC, but due to DNS problem nothing was working on the same phone.
it's a touch (ELF 64/128) running on ONYX 4.6.

All
I have my htc setup to both internet sharing and Wi-Fi connection on my work PC with a lan connection. On both of these connections e.g. wired USB and wireless i can get the internet for about 3 minutes then it stops working. Is there some sort of block? I did see a while back that the WiFi app has no restrictions...
Any help would be superb.
Cheers
Baker0
Thats a little odd, there is certainly no block and I have had the wifi router running for a good 30-40 minutes without failing.
what part is failing, is the phone no longer running the wifi router, or is the pc no longer getting internet on that network connection?
If you need help on how to find this info just reply and I can walk you through some more diagnostic steps.
The phone is still running just the internet stops on the machine. I have to stop the wi fi on the phone then start again then connect. I think it might be t-mobile but the internet on the phone is fine
are you in the uk?
if you connect your laptop to the phone via the wifi router you should be able to right click the network logo, click on status and view the wifi network info, it should tell you in there if it has internet access on that network connection.
If you try this again and when it fails check this status window and see if windows is seeing an internet connection or not?
when the net fails again try and visit http://72.14.203.100/ (this should be the google homepage) if you see google then there is a dns problem if it still says network timeout or failed to connect or something like that then we will have to dig further.
LOL thanks for your help. I am in the UK. ive been working in IT for the last 12 years and I know and have done the test, its not the machine it has something to do with the phone or t-mobile network
Sorry to hijack your thread a little, but I'm on the T-Mobile Network in the UK too (except I'm using a Touch Pro with a custom ROM), and although I can make connections from the PC to websites using the IP address, the DNS isn't working so I can't resolve domain names.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Steve.

It must be the phone then since I do use wifi router, I am on t-mobile and in the UK and I do not experience this :S
I seem to be saying this more and more but maybe you should try a hard reset and see if that fixes the problem?

This is likely an issue with the way your machine has been setup to connect to the wifi network. Try visting the properties of the network and vieing the dns settings for the tcp/ipv4, It should be set as Obtain DNS server addresses automatically. If it is set like this then try setting it too 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 these are googles, dns servers if this works for you then you could stick with this or do some further digging as to why you are not getting the dns server addresses automatically like you should be.

Setting the DNS entries to Google's makes it work, but attempting to get the DNS Server's automatically leaves me with no ability to resolve domain names. How strange?
Thanks for the workaround, not sure where to start looking to fix it properly.

Steve.
Hey guys,
I am new to this wifi router thing and got the following questions:
1. To be able to use it, you must have data connection with your provider. Am I right?
2. By any chance, can I use this system by using a sim taken out of a prepaid mobile broadband dongle and inserted into my device (htc touch HD)?
3. Once I get connected can I surf the internet/check emails etc from within the device itself without the need to use a laptop?
Please don't mind these basic stupid questions.
cheers
