so basically i was out, looked at my phone and saw an SD card realted notification. opened it up and it said my SD card was now ready to be unmounted.
Somehow, it had just decided to format itself. This is where the problem is, i had lots of work files saved onto it and now they're gone. I know its most likely impossible to recover them, but was still hoping there might be some way.
if anyone can help ill be forever in your debt.
put it in your pc and try some recovery software e.g Recuva. It's helped me safe work and music files in the past. Don't know how well it works with removable devices though.
hmm, i tured it but sadly it couldnt detect any of the files. I did however come across a different program that did manage to find some but then said i had to pay $20 for the full version.
Any good free ones?
you had very important files with zero backups anywhere else personally id call that the massive fail and the phone was teaching you a lesson 'always make backups'
generally after a format files cannot be recovered unless it is a quick format where it just 'maps' out the disk if it performs a full format you will not be recovering anything from it and its a futile exercise
How big is the card, and how full was it? It may be feasible to write the whole card to an image file which I could then take a look at for you.
All the imaging programs I know off the top of my head for Windows are commercial but if you can get me a DD image of the card (google is your friend) I have a few tricks I can try if you are totally desperate, the data is very important, and you have no other solutions. (if it's just a bunch of MP3's I don't have time for that)
Either that or have a look here for starters:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_carving
you also might be able to get somewhere with this, if you don't find a free automated tool:
http://www.winhex.com/winhex/
I did hear that some SanDisk products came with a free recovery tool, maybe that's worth looking into?
Good luck.

Sadly everything you've talked about in that post is way over my head and general understanding of computers and software.
I did however manage to recover some files using "Art Plus Digital Photo REcovery" software but some of them were corrupt so in windows image viewer, the dreadded "drawing failed." came up.

Sorry dude, maybe try some more free recovery tools, a bunch came up on google when I tried but most will be trialware or crap. Try to avoid anything that writes to the card itself, stuff that recovers off the card and saves to your PC is best. Was it just photos that you wanted to recover?
If you can figure out how to get a DD image of the card (try google "dd for windows") hit me up on private message and I'll see what I can do. It will be a bit of a mission for me to figure this out using free tools I have never used and then teach you how, but if you can figure it out on your own I'm willing to look at the DD image and recover what I can from it.
If you are about to give up and format the card it may be worth running Windows built in disk recovery tool as a last resort. To do this, open a Command Prompt (usually found in Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories) then run this command with your SD card plugged in:
chkdsk x: /f
Where x is the drive letter of your SD card.
If you are Vista or Win7 you may need to right click on Command Prompt in the Start Menu and run it with administrative privileges.
If it asks you to save or delete any lost chains (or anything else lost) choose to save. These are files it has found but doesn't know the filename or type of file they are, so you get files like FILE0001.CHK etc. Then you may be able to guess which type of files they are (based on size, etc) and change the file extension to .JPG or whatever you think, then try opening them.
At least you got some stuff back tho well played
Good luck dude sorry for confusing you earlier.

didnt ask me to save anything. I read somewhere that the most important thing to do if a card formats itself unintentionally, you MUSNT take any new pictures with it. Sadly, on the night, when i discovered what had happened i thought it was a glitch and took 2 photos to see if they would appear and they did.

I can understand that - it's a fairly simple concept though, all you are doing is copying every byte of the SD card to a file on your PC, it's just the black screen matrix style commands that are frightening you haha I've just had a call from one of my mates "my drive is hosed I need a bunch of files off it" haha but if I get a chance I will look at the DD for Windows stuff and make it easier for ya. I'm back at work tomorrow though so don't want you to get your hopes up

From that it's just saying there isn't any filesystem damage at all. Worth a try.

That's true, but it's not the end of the world. If it was an unintentional format (maybe I misread your 1st post, from the chkdsk results it does look that way tho) it may be hard to recover now, as you seem to have written quite a few files to it since the format. (sorry I'm trying to guess here)
If you are only after photos though, if you have recovered some already with that software you mentioned before, that software may be doing the same thing I would be doing anyway, so you may have already recovered all that is possible If it's other stuff you're after, which you haven't tried recovering, there may still be hope.

This is step by step how to install ClockworkMod (or at least how I did it). I noticed nobody else really had a detailed step by step for noobs...so here you go
I do not take any credit for the development of CWMod. I just take credit for the guide XD
If this does something bad to you or your device it's your fault. I take no responsibility for anything, any damage to you, your property, or anyone.
You will need...
A micro SD card (and a way to get files onto it)
Patience
to be willing to void your warranty
Step 1.
Download ClockworkMod v08 (This version has been found to work best...the newer version causes some issues with some ROMs.)
The file needed is cwmod_v08.zip and can be found at the bottom of this post.
Step 2.
Unzip the downloaded file to your microSD card. Your microSD card should contain a folder called recovery, and a file named update.zip. (This cannot be done using the internal memory with this download.)
(For those wondering, I already updated the file to point to the microSD card rather than the internal storage to reduce the steps needed.)
Step 3.
Turn off your device.
Step 4.
Press the power button and the Volume+ button at the same time and release them when the Viewsonic splash screen pops up. You should see "Detect a recovery key pressed" pop up in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 5.
Watch it install. Your tablet will reboot when installation is complete.
If you want to get into ClockworkMod you need to shut down your device, then press the Power and Volume+ button (the same way you did to install CWMod).
Vol+ and Vol- are to scroll up and down, the home button selects an option, and the back option backs up.
Many thanks to all the contributors for making this forum kickazz
Good post! It's nice to see all of the contributions people are making to this thread. I know it's a drag but reading these post and then reading them AGAIN has gotten me over my noob fear of totally bricking my unit.
By CAREFULLY reading the forums my machine is now rooted, running TNT lite 2.2, has full Market access, syncs with my exchange server\gmail and hotmail accounts and oh yeah lets me rock out to Angry Birds, watch video or movies and read books on Kindle or FBReader.
Yeah I've gotten the boot loop and most of the other "there is a possibility this could happen" items. Don't panic, set it aside come in and read the forum and you'll learn how to fix it.
I do recommend Clocworkmod it gives you so many options when you bork your system.
Order that I'd follow
Install ClockWorkMod
Clear the CACHE using CWM
Install TNT Lite 2.2
Install Flash 10.1
Perform Market fix
Install Angry Birds
Enjoy
All of these can be discovered in this thread just remember DON'T PANIC help is around the corner.
Great post! Its true, there was no instructions how to this. I had to get the info from the Tegratab forums. Thank you.

Cannot get cwm8 installed
I guess I am really missing something about the steps to install CWM8 as I have placed this on a Micro SD card and when I insert it in the gtab and reboot it only recovers from the original internal file and not the one on the Micro SD card, how do I get it to identify the card?

thank you very much, excellent info
ok, flashing clockworkmod isnt working for me. I already have tnt 2.2 installed and titanium backup. apparently i skipped the whole clockworkmod when i got my gtab and got it hooked up. couldnt wait to try tnt 2.2.....
so, i have downloaded the clockworkmod file and unzipped it to my internal storage. when i reboot with power and vol+ i get to a yellow triangle for about 1-2 seconds then it kicks me to the normal boot and loads as normal.
any ideas on how i can get clockworkmod on here?
i thought maybe i can try rommanager, since this file didnt work, but it didnt work either.
i am wanting clockworkmod so i can backup and flash / install the wifi tether fix for ad-hoc mode.
any ideas?

I had the same issue, I think. But I solved it.
ORIGINALLY (wrong way): I manually put the update.zip file into a folder I created called "recovery."
NOW (right way): I let the zip file extract into my SDCard. This created a folder called "recovery" with a file inside called "command." It also created a SEPARATE file called "update.zip" So it is actually 2 files and one folder.
G-tablet
Sorry i'm not in the loop yet with the tablet, but I've done what I thought was copying then pasting the 2 files, but it looks like its not in the internal root file of the G-tablet as i'm looking at the ES File explorer, when i try from the G-tab to copy then paste it, it says copy failed do i need to do it from my laptop or can i do it from the G-tab and will someone please walk me through it from start to finish, i'm in a pinch here Thanks, anyone ......
Perhaps this will help a bit, feel free to link to this image in other threads where this might be needed. I think I have it correct, let me know if it is wrong. A picture of what you need in order to recover/reflash is maybe worth more than words here.

My dad's Vibrant's LCD screen got shattered when he dropped it. And it also turns out that the touch screen doesn't work. Another problem is, that it isn't rooted. Thankful to God, I enabled USB debugging when I updated his Vibrant from 2.1 to 2.2. Now that I pulled the files from the internal storage that my dad wants(pictures, documents, etc.), he wants me to wipe everything inside the internal storage partition. Everything other than the screen and touchscreen work(this was verified by using ddms on the vibrant). We just ordered a replacement from T-Mobile and it should be here in less than 7 days...
Problems:
1. Screen is completely black
2. Screen doesn't recognize touch inputs
3. Not rooted
4. Has a lock pattern
Things you might want to know:
1. Has 2.2 on it
2. Has USB debugging enabled
3. Menu, Home, Return, and Search touch buttons work
EDIT:
I was able to pull all the files using
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/ *destinationfolder*
Now all I need is a command to delete all that is inside of "/sdcard/"
2nd EDIT:
I was able to delete all the files from the internal /sdcard/ folder by using:
Code:
adb shell
cd sdcard
rm -r *
You can get into download mode with the buttons and guess the time on holding them down, and Use SDK hooked up to the computer and then at least you could see what's on the phone and copy from that
Only thing I can think of is ADB - but it's been so long I can't remember if it works on non-rooted devices.
Updated OP post...
Droid Explorer? Or does that require root?
http://de.codeplex.com/
Android commander should do the trick.

you might be able to do something like:
Code:
adb shell
# cd /sdcard/
# rm *
be sure you've got everything, that will wipe your contents of your internal SD card
try ODIN. AAll you have to do is get into download mode.
No odin will only reset the phone not the sd

Why not just physically remove the sd card? I mean, it's an sd card. Didn't it come with a micro-sd to sd converter? A good number of desktops and laptops come with sd card slots.

Internal storage? Yeah, that's not going to work, but I would think resetting the phone would actually reset internal storage.
PS. SD card refers to secure digital cards. I don't know how I am supposed to know "sdcard" inexplicably refers to internal storage on the device.
If your worried that they're going to discover its rooted then don't. Phones without hardware problems just go on a multi phone flashing board. Ones with broken screens probably go in the garbage. On the other hand now rereading I see that may not be your concern.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

does it matter if I have root on this Vibrant?...
I'd just root it, use android commander to view the contents of the SD card, remove what you want removed, then either unroot it or put it onto download mode and flash the stock firmware via Odin.
Seems pretty simple to me.

Hahah!... I wish that it was that simple for me!... As stated in the op post, I can't see anything on screen, I can't plug it in to my computer and use ddms because the glass can't pick up touch points, and it's running 2.2... :|...
I missed the part about not being able to hook it up to the computer. Is the Micro USB port crushed or something?
EDIT: Wait int the OP you said you had it connected to adb. Sooo?
What To Know When Getting a Bigger SD Card I found out the hard way after getting a 16GB PNY Class 10 card for my x10. I had my backups and all that. I copied from the old card to the new one. Then things began acting odd. process.android.media error was really bothering me on startup. So I looked around and found a few suggestions, like clear data drom download manager and media storage. These didnt help at all. I got to looking around under the app management, because I noticed a few app shortcuts were gone. So it was a step in the right direction. I clicked the on SD card tab, started scrolling and said well the last app I moved was this... so I clicked it and went to move it back to the internal memory. It errored out and said something to the effect it was not installed. I went on a witch hunt from that point forward. Apparently Gingerbread will let you know something is amiss. It will have a generic icon and or a checkmark next to the app. I figured thus far the ones with a checkmark could be moved, the ones with a generic icon, were missing and therefore I had to click on each one and uninstall. After doing this all was well. As I really didnt want to move every app back to the internal storage, besides I would have ran out of room too.
The first mistake I realized I made was that, I should have busted out the sd card reader. I was doing this at my mothers and said well its easier. No... Because of the swapping and therefore powercycling the x10. The os scanned or tried to load some apps. There is where it all started going downhill. I thought well I am staying on the same rom, whats the harm.
Important steps / tips I learned.
1. Use a card reader, to transfer all files from old to new card. This also helps with making sure you have a backup too.
2. Consider uninstalling all apps from sdcard, or move them. Depending on situation. I use Titanium Backup & My BackUp Root, so I opt for uninstalling them.
3. Restore your uninstalled apps, or move them back afterwards.
4. Find an app or script to verify all apps are installed correctly? (Dont know if it exists) Otherwise launch each one or verify there are no missing icons or checkmarks present.
Now on to the new adventure of partitioning. I have came across some tips here and there. None really all that dramatic. I am still looking for a guide/line for setting up more than 2 partitions. This is how I have my desktop, but android is a little different. So far I have learned that if you use a Mac, you should bootcamp, dualboot, VM, or boot a linux cd for partitioning. I have not found the right app or terminal commands to make it easier to do. Perhaps I need a better rom. I am fairly happy with zmodv3 hotfix 3. I also think the unlocked bootloader is a blessing and a curse (kernel hell). I still like the CM based ROMS, but am thoroughly turned off by all this MIUI stuff. I may own a Mac, but think iphones are shaat.

After some more tinkering 11/11/11- I have discovered that there is an issue with xrec 0.3gb ready, on zmod hotfix3. If you use xrec to make a full backup after reboot there is that error again. This can be resolved by clearing market and storage data. It works fine via CWM 4or5 recovery.
Thanks from this, I'm about to order a newer card off eBay.

There are a few guides on that. Use windows or a linux based boot cd. Make 2 partitions and they must be primary fat32 (safest). It depends on the phone really. Have not used a 32GB, allot say it works fine and some out there say no. If you need exact walkthru just google it.

My friend just gave me a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 and he told me that it has a problem and may I can fix.
I've tried everything I know but there is no any progress so far.
Here is the problem;
1. Device is not booting. Hanging out at the first logo (Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505)..
2. I thought it's a simple problem.. I can make factory reset and it may work.
3. I entered recovery and I've seen this;

4. The problem seems big than I thought. I thought maybe it may work if I put original firmware. Downloaded from sammobile and nothing changed. Then I decided to install a recovery.
5. I choose TWRP and installed it with these settings. Result on computer;
Result on Phone;
6. And tried to enter recovery, result was successful !!
7. Then Enter 'Advanced' > 'Terminal Command'
8. I just checked 'whoami' on terminal;
9. I can delete everything if I'm root right? So let's try.. 'ls' and get list..
10. Let's delete etc and efs folders. I have the power!
11. Let's reboot device, enter recovery again.. and let's see if I'm successfully deleted directories;
As you can see, device is always saying that Failed to mount /efs (no such file or directory) and more. I can only install recovery. And I can't delete or change anything else. Neither I can't install new firmware.
Do you have any idea? What is this? I want to fix this stupid situation.
I just tried to explain the situation with photos. Hope it wasn't boring.
Thank you for reading.
Have you tried with Kies?
Or maybe trying to flash a custom ROM?
Did you ask if he did something to cause this?
Edit: I once had an SD card which was broken. I could create/copy and delete stuff but as soon as I removed the SD from any device it was connected to, everything was back to it's previous state (deleted files were back and copied stuff was gone). I tried formatting but same thing happened.
Maybe something is wrong with the internal storage.
Try to convert to another file system format.

I don't know how to change the file system?
I mean to ext4 or f2fs, or whatever.
I don't know how to do it either. I never had the need to do it. I don't even know if you can in this situation, but you could try. There should be several guides on the internet on how to do it. Just google it.
Does a pc recognize the phone? Have you tried pushing something to it via adb?

Sure it's recognize.. I'm able to install recovery with Odin.
But when you did turn-off and turn-on, everything is reversing.. Like never installed.
So it's basically exactly like the issue that I described about my broken SD card.
I think it may be an internal storage problem. Maybe it's broken. I don't see why or how something would trigger a write protection.

If the internal storage is dead then I don't think there is much you can do. You could try taking it to specialized service
I was having an issue where the Nook wouldn't apply a software update. I figured if I reformatted that would fix it. Well it did. During the initial setup it found and applied the software update OTA. But, after I connect to Wifi, type in my credentials, and click next, I get stuck on this screen:

The Nook can't get past this. I know it's up to date because it just downloaded an update. I know it was working because earlier today I was reading a book. But now I've hit a wall. I found another topic regarding registering a glowlight 6", but his problem seems to be slightly different. The users in that topic talked about bypassing the registration, but I can't find advice on that for my particular model. The methods I have tried aren't working, so they must be for other model Nooks. And besides, I'd like to have this device working as intended. I don't intend to root it if I don't have to. I've jailbroken my kindles and rooted many android phones over the years, so it's not a big deal if it must be done. But even then, I don't know how I can root it without getting into settings to turn on debugging.
I'll also mention that the device is for the USA region (or ought to be since that's what all the time zone choices are), and so am I.
EDIT: What I failed to mention was that I got the Nook from Savers yesterday (a thrift store) for $5. Well today I talked to Barnes and Noble and the device is blacklisted. Whoever used to own it reported it stolen once upon a time. This deal was too good to be true
Semi-related: The NOOK/ntx_6sl/ntx_6sl:4.4.2/KOT49H/52.0.78_user:user/release-keys release is out.
http://su.barnesandnoble.com/nook/piper/5.2/piper/0.78/update.zip
I'm not sure what great things are in there, but my "glow45patch.zip" is still compatible. (See signature, MergeSmali)

Thanks Renate. I'm doing some reading about the Mergesmali utility you made. I think I am competent enough to use it, but I don't see much info about what use it serves me in particular. Can I use the glow45 patch with mergesmali.exe to bypass the initial setup?

No, the point of it is to patch the specific aspects mentioned, sleep images, white background.
The utility of it is that the same patches were written for 4.5 and continue to work for 5.2 (and beyond).
Moreover, you can't modify any system files until your Glow is rooted.
For skipping registration, is this useful? https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/how-to-access-nook-glowlight-3-t4096829
I'm actually no good at exploit rooting because I usually just hook up a UART console instead.
Oh wow, I got to the easter egg. Thanks for that link. I haven't got this far before. So I've got USB debugging turned on. What next? I just want to use this device as an ereader, nothing else. I'm not sure how to bypass registration still yet, and I've read that there's an extra step I have to take to disable telemetry otherwise my battery life will be really bad.
Also, by platform version is 52.0.78 and my nook apk is 5.2.4.27
EDIT: This looks promising, except that it's for the Glow3 and I have the Glow2 https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/how-to-root-set-nook-glowlight-3-t3802331
I was hoping I could avoid rooting, but it looks like I'll have to in order to overcome that boot animation glitch. And also because it seems the only bypass is to install a separate launcher I guess.
There's been a lot of convergence.
Except for a few hardware things (and 6" vs. 7.8") the Glow2, Glow3 & Glow4 are the same.
Just don't install an update.zip for the wrong model!

Thank you for all the great advice. Perhaps then I should first find a way to make a clean backup before I make any big changes like a custom recovery, or disabling apps and jars.
I've made a lot of progress, but now I'm stuck. I used adb push to temporarily run TWRP and made a backup. Then I used adb to install relauncherX. Pressing HOME doesn't prompt me to pick a launcher. I used https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64191791 to run a script to Root the device. I also disabled the boot animation using this code:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount, rw /system
mv /system/bin/bootanimation /system/bin/bootanimation.bak
reboot

I assume root has persisted thru the reboot because in cmd I was as to run ADB SHELL followed by SU and now I have [email protected]_6sl:/ # in my command prompt.
Problem is, Even though I'm rooted and have a custom launcher, I still can't get past the sign in screen. I think if I knew what process it was, I could kill it with adb, but ps isn't giving me any clues, and dumpsys activity is like information overload, and beyond my skillset to decipher. While in adb shell, su, I used kill 3162 (the pid of com.nook.partner) and that didn't help either. It DID however remove the top bar from the screen, where it shows wifi and battery.
EDIT: So, thanks to me actually READING a little more, I followed some info here https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/how-to-access-nook-glowlight-3-t4096829 and managed to disable the activies necessary to bypass registration. I have the RelaunchX launcher now. I'm 90% of the way there! Now I just need an app that can launch ebooks, because the Nook app wants me to sign in, instead of read.

So, get a reader app.
One that was mentioned recently was AlReader (that's Al as in Albert).
I don't know, I don't use it.
