I'm new to nexus family too and had a lot of problems with it. (Never have problems but this recovery cost me a lot of time).
The solution is:
When you are EXACTLY at the red exclamation mark screen.
1) Press and hold POWER
2) Press volume UP.
That should show the options in less than 2 seconds.

thanx mate..worked like a charm
I am experiencing the same "no command" issue, already tried the volume up + power and nothing happens, if I flash CWM touch 6.0.3.1 everything works but I can't go back to stock recovery no matter what, any advise?
Already flashed stock recovery using Wugfresh's Nexus Root toolkit but the "no command" problem persists.
Thank you.

it's power then volume up. you're doing it the wrong way. you need to press power first and while pressing on that you press volume up

Yeap, same thing, I press and hold the power and then I press the volume up, nothing happens. I even formatted the phone completely using the 4.2.2 image from google, nothing, the no command error keeps coming up, the only way to have a recovery is flashing CWM touch.
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM ----------
I've got my N4 maybe a month ago, I installed the 4.2.2 OTA as soon as I got it, the I proceeded to unlock it and root it, one day someone recommended to clear the cache of the phone using the stock recovery (which I thought I had / to fix another problem that I was having) I went to fastboot and tried to access recovery, BOOM, just an android laying down with a red exclamation mark, no "no command" error at all. I downloaded CWM touch and flashed it using Nexus Root Toolkit, that worked fine, but I didn't want a custom recovery and also I needed to fix a 3G latency problem that I was having, after some reading I saw that someone recommended a full flash using the stock google image.
A couple of days I proceeded to flash the factory image, I installed it, after that I did a factory reset from android itself. After doing all that I wanted to clear the cache with the stock recovery just in case, BOOM, an an android laying down with a red exclamation mark and this time with a "no command" error. Tried the trick of holding the power and pressing the volume up, NOTHING HAPPENS!
Right now I am using CWM Touch.
Any suggestion?
Thank you.
No real solution??? Sad...

Nothing, this answer is unhelpful
I have this issue as well. I tried to "unroot" my N4 (and Im a noob at this), and I think I did something wrong because when I access recovery mode from the bootloader I see the "dead android" but no matter what I do I dont see the control/menu. I tried:
- holding all buttons at the same time
- holding the power button and the down button (in sequence)
- holding the power button and the up button (in sequence)
So now I can not boot my Nexus, I can not wipe my Nexus and I can not access it from the PC. I was running 4.3 and I used the "How to Unroot Nexus 4 to Stock 4.2 Jelly Bean on Windows!" youtube guide ( I am not allowed to post links) to unroot my device (nexus 4), where I fail at 8:45, I simply dont see that menu popping up. Instead, my Nexus shuts down or reboots.
Please help
Is there no fix for this?
I decided to go back to stock to get 4.3. I flashed 4.2.2 using the Nexus toolkit and then got 4.3 via an OTA after this I rooted my phone. As the OTA worked I would imagine that the stock recovery was working. When I tried to install the latest OTA I got the no command issue. I can flash cwm recovery no problem. But when I try to flash stock recovery either via a toolkit or via fastboot command it does not work - no command. And holding in power and then volume up doe nothing. Any advice? I suppoe I cando a full wipe flash the stock 4.3 image and see if this helps. Has anyone had any success fixing this problem?
I have the same issue.
Even when trying to get to stock recovery through Nexus Root Toolkit gets me a NO COMMAND screen.
It seems like the recovery is not there.
Still looking for an answer - any help?

When you get the no command prompt do the following.
Press and hold the power button followed by pressing and holding the volume up button. Release only the volume up button after 2 seconds and you will be in recovery.

Seems that you have the stock recovery installed (that Android laying on its back with a red triangle is the stock recovery).
If I'm not missunderstanding your issue, it shouldn't really be an issue but it's just like how it should be.

"No Command" issue solved for Zuum 9330
I want to thank every one of you guys. I had same issue with my phablet. By reading your comments I got ideas to try some key combinations, and factory reset my phone. Here is what I did:
1) Power down the phone
2) Press and hold "volume up", then Press and hold "power" button until Android logo with the message "no command" shows up
3) Press and hold "volume down", then Press "back" button then release "back" button and the menu will show up. Then release "volume down".
4) use "volume up" or "volume down" to navigate menu
5) to execute selection, use "home" button
I hope it helps someone.
If so, please tell me.
Total first timer, flash to stock as had messed up sd card partition trying to flash custom ROM, really worried when couldn't access recovery after stock flash. Thank you thank you thank you, this totally worked!!!
thank you a lot. saved my phone. i thought i will through away the nexus 4 but the combination of no command power button and volume up did well
Hope this helps, you press and release volume up! worked perfectly
Performing a factory reset may take some time, so make sure that you plug your device into a power source before you start. If your phone becomes unresponsive at any point during these steps, you can restart it by holding down the Power button for several seconds.
If your phone is on, turn it off.
Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery".
Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command".
While holding down the Power button, press and release the Volume Up button once.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "wipe data/factory reset" and press the Power button to select it.
Press the Volume Down button seven times to highlight "Yes - erase all user data" and press the Power button to select it.
After the reset is complete, press the Power button to select the option to reboot your device.
When you've finished, follow these steps to restore your data.
Yes, I know, everyone knows how to enter safe mode, bootloader, and recovery.
I found there are some inconsistencies to entering and using recovery depending on your which software you are running. In addition there are multiple ways of entering stock recovery.
Also I always see people asking this question because somehow the keypress order is not intuitive.
Entering Safe Mode
Tablet booted and running Android
Press/Hold Power button until power menu shows up
Tap/Hold Power off option
Choose OK to reboot in safe mode
Tablet powered down
Press/Hold Power button until Google screen shows up, RELEASE Power button
Press/Hold VolDn until Android has booted up
If successful, you will see Safe mode overlayed on bottom left of screen.
Entering Bootloader (ie fastboot mode)
Tablet booted and running Android
From adb
adb reboot bootloader
can also choose recovery from menu after bootloader comes up
From app
Use Quick Boot from Google Play
Tablet powered down
Power+VolDn while booting to enter bootloader
Release buttons after you see bootloader screen
Entering Stock Recovery
Tablet booted and running Android
From adb
adb reboot recovery
From app
Use Quick Boot from Google Play
Tablet powered down
Power+VolUp while booting to enter recovery
You can release buttons after you see Google on screen
When Stock Recovery starts you will see the Android fallen down screen
To bring up the Recovery menu
Power+VolUp to show recovery menu
Must be this sequence Press/Hold Power, THEN Press/Release VolUp, release Power
Within menu
VolUp to move up
VolDn to move down
Power to select
In addition, I found an inconsistency with JSS15J stock recovery that wasn't in the JWR66N recovery
While at the Android fallen down screen if you mistakenly press
VolUp
instead of
Power+VolUp
you will still get the Recovery menu.
However, VolUp will no longer function. It will instead become a toggle for switching between the Recovery menu and the Android fallen down screen
Android fallen down screen
VolUp to toggle recovery menu
Within menu
VolUp does not work since it toggles recovery menu
VolDn to move down
Power to select

I don't remember if there are two images one with and one without the triangle. I think I've only seen the image with the red exclamation point.
I've never seen anything to indicate the red exclamation mark is something you need to pay attention to.
Now if you apply an update and there is an error, then that is something I would pay attention to.

It doesn't load the stuff you added.
It is similar to safe mode on a PC, used to diagnose whether the issue is in the stock ROM or is in something you introduced by installing some app.

Bootloader
If none of that works, try the command with a dash "adb reboot-bootloader" Depends on your device sometimes, sometimes unplugging your device right after you enter this command will keep it from getting stuck at the boot logo screen. If that doesn't work, hold the power button to power device down and then boot it into recovery instead using the button combo. Then you can wipe cache & start all over again.
I'm not even able to get into Recovery. I can get to the bootloader, then I select "Recovery mode" and it shows the Google logo, but it never goes into recovery. I have let it sit at the Google logo for a couple of hours, and end up just holding down the power button to shut it down.
I have tried Skipsofts toolkit, as well as Wug's, to try to unlock the bootloader. This ends up with the device hanging at the "Unlock bootloader" screen after selecting "Yes". Again, I have left it in this state for well over an hour with no change.
Here's some info on my 2013 Nexus 7:
KitKat 4.4.4
Never rooted
Never unlocked bootloader
HW version rev-e
Bootloader version FLO-04.02
I suspect my Nexus knew I was supposed to go on travel next week and is faking sick.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

First of all, do you want android or Windows?
for android, when you see "ENTERING FASTBOOT MODE" then you can reinstall the Recovery and go!
Thanks for replying.
I just want my phone work again, so either Windows or Android...
But with android, i already intalled LK Boot (the message appears in blue now) then i installed the recovery from SC Dard but when the phone boots, it's only showing the black screen with message (in blue). With windows I stuck with the ''Invalid vendor ID'' while installing with RUU (I can't determinate my Vendor ID). So please help

You had Android before as you said, so you can come back to android easily. just be really sure you have reinstalled the Recovery correctly! (Even this happened to me, but at last you will Pass!)
have you tried to manually enter recovery by VolumeUp?
Please tell us the ROM you want to use.
I can't enter recovery manually, only with PC (with CWM LK Boot Recovery's update.bat file). when i power on the phone holding volume up, the phone displays this message (in blue = meaning that the LK Boot is installed):
nand id: 0x5500bcec maker=0xec device=0xbc
press VOLUME UP for RECOVERY
press VOLUME DOWN for FASTBOOT
flash_read_image: failed (319 errors)
ERROR: Cannot read recovery_header

Thank again for replying

nand id: 0x5500bcec maker=0xec device=0xbc
press VOLUME UP for RECOVERY

Good,
When you can't enter Recovery manually (Volume Up), means either it hasn't been installed correctly or you button is damaged. Yes LK Boot is installed (the blue texts) but the Recovery (graphic interface) seems hasn't been installed.
if you can enter Recovery by PC, why not format and install ROM there (don't restart)? you may pass anyway!
and the last thing, did you hold both Power and Volume up? you should just power then release it, but hold Volume UP, what we see in the text you showed us, the phone hasn't detect the pressed Volume Up.
Have a nice try!

I've also formatted before i install the ROM but no succes...
I don't think there is a problem with the volume up button 'cause i use it in the recovery and when i press both volume buttons and power button it leads me to the WP reset option (factory resset) and i use the volume up button to confim the action (restoring).
And, is there a way in can check my Vendor ID? 'cause i would like to install WP but fastboot doesn't give me the CID, the command ''fastboot getvar CID'' returns ''CID: '' then nothing. I'm so desesperate...
BR.
Going Back to WM you should have the right ROM, or contact HTC for the right one, read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21617447&postcount=2

Alright then,
You said you can't enter Recovery by VolumeUp, right?
if right, connect USB to PC, Click on Update.bat, press number one, then number two, and restart phone (don't unplug phone), when entered fastboot, press number two again, you may now enter manually recovery. if you couldn't pass, press number two and on your phone you would see recovery interface, format and install the ROM, unplug USB and restart phone.....
Okay, will try. thanks again

yeah I mean those 4 arrow buttons which you should touch them. if you touch the arrow, the selection above will move. And there is no need to move by using Volume keys in Recovery.
using PC, it should be possible through terminal ADB, which are some codes for connection. but I don't support this way.
I recommended that you do it by using touch, if the four arrow touch doesn't work, then how can you use it with Android? especially the Phone app is in the four arrow button direction.

You should follow a guide, search for (Install ROM through adb, install ROM without SDCARD, install ROM via adb)
Anyway, I found this guide may help you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=911228
Remember to enter recovery as you did it (Volume + up), So follow the link above at your risk, you may skip the Wipe/format step.

I do not know if this has been covered and I missed it, or if it is even possible. I was trying to boot into recovery to clear the cache. I have the T-Mobile V20. I can get it to the factory reset screen, but it only deletes the data on the phone. Does anyone have any information on how to do this, or what I am missing? I appreciate the help. Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
You gave to have TWRP to do that. Haven't gotten that far yet. Phone is brand new. Give it 2-3 weeks.

Ok, so there is no stock recovery like with the S7 and Note 7? Thanks.
What exactly are you talking about when you mean recovery? I mean you are able to get into a recovery mode screen that lists things such as 'reboot to bootloader', 'sideload from adb', 'sideload from sdcard', 'factory reset', and like a cache clear. But I dont know if that's what youre looking for.

Go to settings, then general, then storage and click on internal. You will see the cache and clear it after it calculates.
open developer options, enable usb debugging, and with adb on your PC type adb reboot recovery then hold power and volume up when the little android dude appears.
He may be referring to the OEM stock LG recovery. In the stock recovery you can wipe data/factory reset or clear cache partition. You can get to this recovery by using certain button combos before there phone powers past the bootloader.

OR, from Terminal Emulator just "reboot recovery"
i found the button combination to get into recovery mode.
Start by turning off your phone.
Don’t reboot it – just press on the Power key and select “power off” or press and hold the Power key for a few moments.
Wait while the shut down process is completed.
Then, press and hold (at the same time and for a few moments) the Volume Down and Power buttons.
When the LG Logo is displayed, release the Power Key but keep pressing the Volume Down button; while doing so press only once the Power button.
Release all the keys as soon as the recovery mode menu is displayed on your LG V20.
I have tried multiple versions of the combinations on my tmobile one and can never get into my twrp that way. I just use titanium backup for now

You can also access it via fastboot mode commands. By typing adb reboot recovery. But if you dont have twrp installed, then you will be taken to the white screen and your data will be deleted

Make sure you have the latest TWRP installed. 3.0.2-1 I believe. From off its vol down+power, see LG logo let go of power for 1 second then push and hold again(so both buttons will be pressed again, not just vol down) select "yes" to both options that pop up, (and no it won't wipe anything.) It will boot into TWRP as soon as you select yes to the second option. I have TMO as well and it works every time. The latest TWRP is the only one that u can boot into recovery from powered off

Are you talking about the screen that says press power button to pause boot?

No when you do the button combo properly a while screen will pop up and ask if you want to factory reset. You select "yes" both times and you will boot into TWRP. You have to have the latest 3.0.2-1 TWRP installed in order to get to recovery from power off. The button combo 100% works. Again, vol down + power. When you see LG let go of power but not vol down for one second and then press and hold power(now both buttons) until that white screen pops up. If it doesn't, you either don't have TWRP installed or not the latest version.
You manually installed TWRP, correct? Are you rooted?

Yeah I can access it through terminal, adb or any app that has a shortcut like titanium backup but I have yet to be able to do it through the button combination for whatever reason lol. I'm 99% sure its the correct twrp version and I am rooted. Ill double check the twrp version in a bit. Thanks for the help

Yeah, check your version in TWRP. If it's not 3.0.2-1 you can get the latest in jcaduono's dirty cow rooting thread

Just tried it again and still couldnt do it with the buttons. Used titanium backup to boot into twrp and its the correct version as you said. Am I doing the button combo on the 1st LG screen or on the 2nd one that pops up after the screen that says cant verify boot press power button to pause boot? It should be on the 1st LG one that shows up based on what I've read so far but maybe I'm mistaken?? No clue at this point. You said release for a second and ive done that plus many other variations of timing and I just plain suck at this I guess lol.
Does anyone have a working stock recovery for the XT1642. Everthing i find and flash gives an error (file not signed or corrupted) literally everything gives me this. I now get the "no command" error when i open the recovery from the bootloader. I'm looking for one cuz i just got the nougat update but i cant update with twrp or a broken "no command" recovery.
Can anyone help?
As long as your recovery flashes with OKAY at the end of your command, the recovery should be flashed. Reboot into recovery to ensure it's not overwritten.
With the no command in recovery, press the power button, and whilst holding the power button also press the volume up button, then release the volume up button and then the power button. After a few seconds of pressing that combination, you should enter the recovery options with 'Apply update via SD card', 'wipe cache' and other menu items.
Hopefully you'll be able to install your update - in the event you get an error 7, you may have to re-flash Marshmallow or flash the fastboot Nougat ROM. Good luck either way

To piggyback on this reply, it can take a little practice to press both buttons correctly and get this to work. Or maybe it's just me

When I do this it just boots to system. Maybe I didn't press the volume button good enough??

It's possible, as Mistersteve posted and I concur, the key combo takes some time to get used to, also, I recall the top option when you get into recovery is 'reboot to system', so that might have been accidentally pressed. Thanks google....
All I can suggest is be a bit slow with the key presses, I think the key combo last time took about 5 seconds. It's fiddly, though hopefully you'll get there!

Okay, starting from the top: (credit to the steps listed in the Motorola support document: https://motorola-global-portal.cust...prod_answer_detail/a_id/105537/p/30,6720,9390)
1) With your device powered off, hold both the power button and the volume down key until the device powers on, then release.
2)This will boot your device into the bootloader/fastboot mode. Use the volume keys to select Recovery. Press the power key to boot.
3)At the No command screen, hold the power key and then press, then release the volume up key, then release the power key. You should then be at the recovery menu screen. This step might take a few tries.
You may choose to skip steps 1 and 2 via adb, so whilst your device is powered on and booted, plug your device into your computer (checking that USB Debugging is enabled), and in the adb terminal execute the command 'adb reboot recovery'.

It did work, sadly the update failed anyway. I thought fixing the recovery would make the update work but no.
