Hey guys!
So, I bought myself and my girlfriend an HTC HD2.
My HD2 works just fine, but the one my GF has, has this problem:
When pressing a button on the keyboard (m for example) multiple times, she gets random letters that seem to be pressed by her, even though they are 1cm or more away from her finger.
I know that there is a thread about it, and I already installed low sensitivity cabs and what else to fix it, but none of these cabs helped.
Last week she decided to send it in to repair, she also included a description of the error in the package.
Well today she got it back, and all they did was making a HR, updating the ROM and "checked" it for problems.
As you can imagine, it came back with all the problems still there.
Is HTC just plain dumb to realize, that MANY HD2s have these problems?
What can I do to get my GF a working device?
She had to send it to the german repair center.
How can I make sure that it'll get fixed?
Regards,
Lukas
I have this same problem .
I've sent 2 weeks a go for repair (3 things cracking soud in speaker, gps problems, and touchscreen) and i was hope that they will change touch screen (because its faulty - thats for sure).
I've got my phone back today. They changed only speaker. Still having problems with typing letters from keyboard. will send it back to them. wankers

Hi again,
so i recently fixed my keyboard issue and to lighten up darkness: it was not a software-issue.
after playing with the thought of returning the phone to tmobile, i flashed the "new official" tmobile-DE rom, and the tmobile service center told me, that this would void my warranty because the rom hasn't been downloaded from the offical tmobile-DE website... so i discarded the option of returning the phone in the next few month
toda i woke up and retried my hardware-keyboard on the vario 2, i recognized something which was: the reason for the vario dropping so much keypresses, was a bad contactivity... i mean: i can hear the key i press "clicking" but no char appeared on the screen... so i disassembled the vario 2 todays morning, and searched for a way to fix this, a way to give the keyboard a better fitting, or somewhat like that. the difficultest thing was to remove the "void"-label without tearing it... took me about 15 minutes to remove this damn label, but it remained intact
after that, i systematically disassembled the phone, and i did the following things to the keyboard-parts:
removed the white label which was on the "contact-side" of the keyboard-circuit
realligned this label and put it back on the circuit
then i put the keys and the circuit back into the housing, and got a piece of paper
i cut this to be as long an high as the circuit itself is, and put 3 of those paper-sheets onto the back of the keyboard-circuit, then fixed the 3 sheets a little with the flex-cable connecting the keyboard to the main-circuit.
then put the phone back together an tested it
my keyboards working like a charm right now, i'm so happy that my phones completely working again, without returning it
i thought this might help someone who has got same problems, perhaps my keyboard got this malfunction after the first drop, i do not remember when this problem occured the first time, and actually... i don't have to anymore

this is the orignal post said:
hellow to all
so i'm using my hermes (MDA Vario II) for as much as two months now.
I dropped it two times, first time 20cm onto carpet, second time 40cm onto the street -.-
but as far as i can see, not much damage, some scratches, nothing to worry about.
since i have this phone, i flashed several roms onto it. Black/Faria/Schaps/t-mobile_shipped/dopod wm6/black wm6 final/and many others... even some of my own roms got tested in there
i wasn't able to test the shipped status for very long, because i flashed the first custom rom about five days after hardware-arrival
the one thing driving me insane at the moment is the f**king hardware-keyboard. sometimes the "red dot" (for the second assignment of the keys) gets locked, without me wanting this. or i press "space" and nothing happens, or even worse, it adds some crazy special symbols to my sms wich then extends to four or more sms...
the e and w keys sometimes do not respond, and worst case ever had: keyboards gets fully locked up... had to soft-reset.
during the testing of the many custom roms, which were pre-finals, (in contrast to wm6-release versions), i thought: "yes everythings working, and the keyboard driver is producing crap". but even with the dopod rom (wm6) now active on my hermes, i have problems described above.
may it be the 1.50 radio? should i go back to 1.47?
or is it an hardware issue? should i return the phone to my loval mobilcom-store?
its driving me insane, i have to recheck every word two times... and i have to correct many things... actually i'm typing very fast, and this lowers my typing speed by, lets say 2000%
looking forward to hear your ideas,
will be grateful for every idea, which gets me some closer to a solution...
greetings
and keep up all your good work

There can be software issues that cause freezing and perhaps laggy behaviour on the keyboard. However, from what you describe, I tend to think it's primarily a hardware issue. (Possibly made worse or even more annoying by software slow downs for unrelated reasons.
If having used different ROMs, key behaviour is still largely the same (eg the same keys respond poorly or require harder presses) then I suggest you have the not uncommon hardware keyboard issue:
Keyboard dismantling pics:

If changing ROMs leads to varying issues with the key board, but the behaviour of the keys changes ie different keys cause problems then it could either be software or the keyboard ribbon cable is poorly connected.

thanks for the link,
actually i thought about disassembling my hermes, but then again thought about warranty because its just 2 months of age...
i'll test the keys some more, especially the space, e, w, and "reddot" seem malfunctional... will keep an eye on the keys, and if original WM5 rom does not help, i will reflash the phone to factory default, and return the phone to my nearest store... they will have a solution and if it will be a replacement i'll be happy with it either

hi @ all...
sorry for digging this thread out
but recently i recognized my keyboard to be malfunctional again.
with "again" i mean, i thought it worked quite good for some time (lets say a month or so) but for some tome now, i assume 3weeks now, my keyboard throws the same annoying malfuntions as it had done the time i opened this thread. perhaps i ignored them for a while, so i haven't recognized the malfunction, but maybe my phone was really "cured" for some time.
Note: i've been running on the official dopod wm6 rom all the time since i opened this thread. WM% and WM5 original didn't help me, so i decided to stick to WM6. i've just tried 3 different roms, and two pandora self-cooked-roms in the last hour, and tested my keybard very much.
but it seems to be faulty... it lags some keys (in fact "reddot", e, w, space, colon (as a result of the reddot hang) and sometimes i get the "reddot" locked with only pressing it a single time. three words later i recognize that i am writing crap
so... any remainig ideas? or should i return it back to t-mobile?
i tried wm5/6 several roms
also tried various radios, at the moment running on 1.54...
if i want to return it, what do i have to look out for? should i flash it back to original t_mob_101_shipped_rom? and should i restore the original SPL?
i've simunlocked the phone... but did'nt SUPERCID it... always used the Hard-SPL 2.10. Is there any way to bring my phone into a state in which it would be possible and safe to return it?
greetings

fixed my problem (see first post)
My Topaz Touch Panel got "Freezed" for several times a day,
the situation is, it will sudddently freeze at one point,
when every touch on the panel, it comes jump up and down, goes left and right,
I though it is problem with old rom and radio version, so tried to install different kind of version to try to solve but.......... I'm so depress that the problem still here.
Yesterday, I finally found what's the trick to make it back to normal,
it is to open the back cover and push it back !!! Then the touch panel will become ok works.
It is very curious and I don't know why....but that cause me upset and lots of trouble, I'm gonna to throw away my Topaz if the problem still here
Hope someone could help me
You feel free to mail that Topaz to my PO Box if it's such a big problem for you... I'll take it off you hands
Sounds like a hardware issue, I'd contact HTC or your carrier to get it repaired
Hope any of you guys can help me on this. Last night my Leo's screen went totally unresponsive.
Could not get past the screen lock. Removed the battery, rebboted ... could not get the PIN code in.
I had seen this already two nights ago, but it got away once I moved in an area where I could get a reasonable signal (ultra-crappy where I am now on vacation).
Now Im'm beginning to think the signal thing was just a coincidence and that the problem is way more serious.
In total despair, I even tried a hard reset. To no avail.
Phone boots up fine. I can even sync to it (so yes, I can get to the registry). But since the only control is the screen ... not really a lot I can do with it.
I need to be in touch for work and I badly need the voice and internet connectivity (right now I'm using the wife's phone ...).
Any ideas besides getting an RMA from HTC?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Update: spoke with HTC support.
It looks like the issue is somehow triggered by the lock screen.
As suggested by HTC, I flashed again the 1.66 ROM upgrade and everything ran smoothly until the phone went in standby the first time.
Then, I was (and still am) unable to unlock the screen. And if I soft reset screen is unresposnsive again.
Right now I can just receive calls (I removed the PIN code from the SIM temporarily).
HTC told me to send it in for repair, but everything in Italy is closed until Aug 23rd and the only option I have is to ship it at my own expense to the UK and back (HTC will collect and deliver free of charge only within the same country).
Total bill some 100+ Euro plus driving 100 KM or so to the nearest courier collection point. A nightmare.
What really troubles me is that the problem surfaces only once the screen locks.
On one hand I follow HTC's support that if flashing 1.66 did not cure the issue, it cannot be software.
On the other hand, if it is indeed hardware, how come it freezes only after the first lock screen? Lock/unlock is a software thing. Screen should behave exactly the same way before or after the lock - shouldn't it?
Anyone here seen/heard of anything like this?
wow, gotta love those "closed for the summer" euro vacations.
If you reinstall the ROM, then why not disable the lockscreen until you can get it fixed?
You can install BSB tweaks and that has an option to disable autolock.
i had the same exact problem; it started freezing only on the lock screen then got worse and started freezing at random times while in use. I finally broke down and sent it in to HTC to check it out. I'm waiting to hear back with there diagnosis and I will pass along whatever they tell me.
Good to know the problem has come up somewhere else (if you're the only one you are most likely to hear it's your fault before they replace the most expensive component in the phone). Where are you located slimster?
How long have you been waiting for? HTC policy should be 7-10 working days from when they receive the phone at the lab (so they told me and I remember reading it somewehere here in xda too).
Hi there, haven't heard from me for awhile. I was pretty busy, but now I'm still trying to get my phone to work right. So.. I still haven't found a solution to this screen behavior. When I type on keyboard or just select something in menu, it sometimes doesn't react to it. I have tried and sent it to the warranty repair but the did nothing but "calibrate" the screen and install new firmware (this was 6 months ago). So I'm wondering if there has been any new fix or something, to fix this? Or should I try and get the screen replaced once again under warranty? But they were pretty confident that the problem is not in the screen and it just has to be that way
There's a touchscreen fix cab out there that seems to help with some of the HD2's I manage though I have to say there are people, (my CEO being one of them), that are like a dead fish... I do something and ask them to repeat it themselves and the screen simply doesn't react but once in three tries. It's odd... My CEO finally rejected the phone, I took it over and it has been flawless for three moths or more... Yet I watched her try and try again to carry out the simplest of tasks...
hi,..
i own a HTC legend with A1 (Austria) Branding and made a 2.2 Over the air update. when i started to use it i thought that it would be faster but this has now rly changed.
Last thursday i could use my legend properly but then - 2 hours later the touchscreen didn't work any more .
i tried to unlock it but only the right side of the TS worked.
so i already tried some of the tips of some threads of XDA like hardreset , refreshing the update , and now it is a bit more useable , so i can slide the homescreen pages on different points but i cant start apps with touching..
Does anyone have a solving for this problem ?
I have no idea if the froyo update is responsible for this but I have the same problem. The top part of the screen is no longer responsive. I cannot slide the notification bar down and sometimes crazy things happen on the screen without tapping anywhere. This makes the phone practically unusable until I reboot and it usually works for some time even though the top part is not responding (notification or letter 'q' when in landscape).
Can I try something or I have to visit service? I cannot find the link where they explain how to change the refresh rate as you mention could you please provide it? also I found a couple of other threads dealing with similar problems and it looks like there is no solution am I correct ?
thanks
same thing happened to my Legend. After two months, the thing appeared, next few days all was good. Another two months and it came back. I had to send for service: they DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG and DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, anyway, after they sent it back to me, it's working again (until now, which is almost another two months)
My guest: there's some weird thing with the range/sensitivity of the touch screen, maybe a problem of the screen being magnetically/electronically charged without being discharged (as it should), after a while (e.g. a week) the problem disappears.
I far as I know, there's no solution. I have even found a clip on youtube (search for 'htc legend touch screen problem' or something) describing the same situation, maybe you should take a look there to for a abetter description of the case.
Anyone, please, if you know a way out of this, please, post it!
I have the same problem, the top notification bar cannot be pulled down in portrait and in all orientations I cannot use the touchscreen near the HTC logo. Mine is an unbranded and the problem just started this morning. I am running a custom rom from here and have been running the same one for a while so I don't believe the ROM is responsible.
Edit after using multitouch visible test from the market, it turns out I can't get a response that is higher than pixel 57 vertically.
I have already sent mine for service under warranty. I hope everything turns out well, because I really like my legend (form factor/design/specs). After the slow down I experienced with the froyo upgrade this problem came to spoil all these months of happiness. I will keep you posted.
EDIT:
I got my Legend back from service 3 days ago and everything looks fine at the moment. I hope that my bad froyo experience has ended.
According to the documents I received they just performed a ‘software upgrade’. This means that the problem was related to software. I guess some files could have been corrupted during the OTA froyo update. Maybe that also explains the sluggish froyo experience.
I can only suggest that before any critical updated a factory reset should be performed and hope for the best. I will update this thread if this serious problem with the touchscreen ever returns.
yeah i sent i to the warranty service too . But they said that the problem has mechanical reasons. So they suggested to repair it for 218(!!) Euros . -.-
I had exactly the same problem HTC have repaired it under waranty, so must have been a software issue, looks lik eits happening to quite a lot of poeple, pretty unacceptable consideringhow long it took them to release the Froyo update, not sur ethey bothered to test before releasing
Solution for screen problem ( HTC LEgend)
