Hi all, I thought I'd share a mini breakthrough I had with Animated Weather performance on the Sense 2.5 home screen on the TP2. The animation is 100% fast and smooth if you DON'T activate any wallpaper.
I'm using the stock WM 6.5 South East Asia ROM with the stock Manilla version 2.5.20121225.0. I was recently forced to reload my TP2 after a bad application install required a hard reset. I immediately noticed how much faster the weather animation was after the hard reset. It was 100% fast and smooth. So I only made incremental changes until I determined what the cause of the slowness was.
As soon as I enabled ANY of the weather wallpapers, the performance of the animated weather dropped to around 70%. The problem is that there's no way to remove the wallpaper after you've selected one - you can only change it to a different wallaper - so I had to do a hard reset again to restore the animated weather performance to 100%.
Does anyone know if there is a way of removing the wallpaper using a registry edit or a file system edit?
I know that Max Manilla has a 'remove wallpaper' feature in it, but I've found that the weather animation is still only around 70% with Max Manilla installed.
Have you also tried to slide up on the homepage, to display the 9 quicklaunch buttons? That also gives a fast, and smooth weather animation, even with a wallpaper.
The wallpaper itself is not the issue, it's the elements that are on the homepage that cause the problem (clock, calendar).
I think you can remove the wallpaper in the registry. It should be in [HKCU\Software\HTC\Manila].
Yes I think you're right, but I also believe that the wallpaper is like an additional element that the animation struggles with. If I have a wallpaper enabled then I can only have another 1-2 elements displayed before the animation suffers. With no wallpaper I can have 1. the clock (with the weather insert) 2. the calender and 3. the quick links, all displayed, and still have excellent animation performance.
I'll have a look at that registry key after work tonight and see if I can find the setting to disable the wallpaper.
I'd probably say those "elements" like the clock and short cuts and email and missed call notifactions are probably more important to ...... everyone.... then having clouds float across their screen

What I'm saying is, you can have all the elements displayed AND the weather animation nice and smooth, as long as you don't enable a wallpaper. I for one, happen to like the animation

Thanks for the tip. I found out that if you've enabled a wallpaper and now you want to disable it you just delete these 2 entries from the registry:
HKCU\Software\HTC\Manila\CachedBackgroundPath
HKCU\Software\HTC\Manila\HomeBackgroundPath
Neither of them exist prior to enabling a wallpaper
So, is it smoother once you delete these keys ?

It will be smoother but you will lose your wallpaper
Another way to improve animation performance is to minimize the number of things appearing on the home screen. I recommend using Cookie's home tab to remove the quicklinks
That way you can keep your wallpaper, have smooth weather animation, and still have access to quicklinks by swiping up
(Actually the clock involves a lot more lua scripts so removing the clock would be more effective...but I don't think anyone would do that )

I have a better idea... removing everything from the main screen. This way it will be very very fast.
Come on let's be serious !!! If you remove the quicklinks and a few other stuff you'd better with Sense 2.1
If removing the wallpaper makes an actual difference it's worth it (I like having a black or dark one anyway...). Btw Valkyrie ROMs are quite smooth even with the wallpaper on (Just wanna see if I can get it even faster)

It's definitely smoother after you delete these keys. Even if you've selected a black wallpaper, deleting these keys will still help because it actually removes the wallpaper altogether, so there's one less thing the animation has to contend with.
I can't say if this is a good idea for those of you who have Cookies Home Tab or Max Manila installed. It works great for me though, on a stock ROM running Sense 2.5. Back up the Manila registry key first if you're not sure, so it can be easily restored. It seems there's no need to disable Touch Flo while making these changes - they can be made on the fly while touch flo is still running.
I tried this (deleting the two registry entries) on the stock Sprint 6.5 ROM - works great! Noticable improvement on the home page. Thank you!

but anyways I myself prefer no weather animation, it's all up to the user

Man, same here.
It kinda irritated me in the first place having redundant information (to the weather tab) making Home tab elements harder to read, but then when I realized the effect it had on performance, it was GONE-dee.

Yes- it's called a registry editor, and there are a number of options (Total Commander, PHM Registry Editor, etc).
If you don't know what you're doing, though, be careful- don't start deleting things you don't think need to be there, and so on. You can mess up the system in a fundamental way.
Thanks for helping, downloading Resco Explorer, will let you know what have I done with it

After changing my clock to an analogue one (from the Fallout theme here), the weather animation is a lot smoother. Everything is a lot smoother actually, so changing the clock does wonders for everything really.
Holy crap! You're right! I've been irritated with laggy homescreen for so long and it's that damn clock! Thanks for the tip!
i think is not related with the clock but the weather icon which below the clock...when i use cookie home tab and i use "clock without weather"...my homepage weather animation immediate feel lot smoother and faster...
Any way to just dissable the full screen weather animation? i want the weather... just dont care for the animation that comes up on the whole screen.

hi. i first posted this idea on the PointUI forum.. so forgive me for the blasphemous screen.. anyway.. i jsut want to share this idea for those developers, willing to create a scrolling today screen launcher..
click thumbnail for the animated demo..
the idea is, to create a launcher that is customizable (custom icons - TGA or PNG for transparency), scrollable, and FUN.. hehe..
anyway.. it's a simple horizontal swipe and scroll.. but the added feature of the - what i call - default pane..
the default pane should be a set of five shortcut icons (user configurable) that can be easily accessed from anywhere in the horizontal list.. how? double tap the space above the icons..
for example, you have a 16 icon horizontal list, if you are in the end of the list, and you have to go back to your default pane, just double tap the space above the icons, and the list will scroll back to your default pane..
also, there should be an option for memory or default..
the memory option remembers the last position of your launcher and remains where it is even after you launched a program or switched to another window..
the default view scrolls the list back to the default pane after launching a program or every time the today screen becomes active..
this idea could not just be a today screen plugin.. it can also be a launcher that can be called via screen gesture (FtouchSL/FtouchFLO).. the difference with this launcher, is if implemented, would just be an over-window rather than a full screen launcher.. it may also be a task switcher.. depends on the developers choice..
here's a quick demo..
[/i]click on the thumbnail for the animated demo..[/i]
once again, this is just an IDEA.... for someone else with the programming prowess..
i'm just good with photoshop and ideas. but binaries and hexadecimals kill me..
Good idea..i hope some one develops it...u can try Throttle launcher
Where did you find the picture?
Have you done it by yourself?
look into ultimatlaunch also... very similar to what you are wanting
with customize icons and wallpaper... wold be good.. and a feeds infos too on the clock and events apperance
the upper part of the picture/animation is the PointUI Home interface.. no credit for me with that..
the bottom part however is mostly my creation.. (the icons used were modified from bundled stardock icons for windowsXp)
i created the bottom part and the application launcher ribbon as an idea suggestion for the developers of PointUI..
a bit inspired by the leaked wm7 pix and the iphone springboard hacks they created over at cre.ations.net
i don't really like PointUI that much (YET, but i'm getting there), so i also suggest the idea as a native Today Screen plugin.. and an all around launcher.. a minimalist approach, compared to the touchFLO cube and it's encarnations..
i don't like ultimate launcher that much.. i'm not into Tabbed launchers.. too much space consumed..
throttle launcher looks cluttered at the moment.. too much things are rendered on screen at the same time.. it takes up much time loading and, again, screen real estate.. i'm still eyeing for its future improvements though.. especially if it will be able to get customized, as in, to be able to select the features that will be loaded, and will not..
it's not likely that all people want to see a big clock, a bunch of contact pictures, all of the shortcuts, and running programs cramped in their screen at the same time..
Would be awesome...good idea buddy.

they have a single line launcher now, it the same thing you ar requesting. I'm also keeping an eye on them i think the single line can be a nice addon to every rom. (but it has to be easy customiseble)
If you combine Ultimate Launcher with some clever today screen plugins, especially with rltoday, you can do at least the first part with customization only.
if only the creator wants to make pointui for VGA sigh..
That concept has been done here
i tried v2r and though it was not that good....this idea is awesome though i would love to see it developed
I like the concept.... I'll try to achieve something similar with my app (ThrottleLauncher) and report back with what can be done . Some questions:
Any way of getting the art work used on your screen shots?
What are the left and right arrows on the clock for?
Thanks for that cool concept!

This is what I've so far. I know the look is not the same but without the background's it's the closer I can make it for the today plugin. For the "poping up" app, the same theme can be used without the clocks on throttle main app. A little modification on the app will be needed to show the prevous window as background.

The today plugin ribbon is really eassy to achieve with my app ;-). I've made a simple theme for you. Just uncompress the zip file into your instalation dir of ThrottleLauncher (see my signature).
After that, go to ThrottleConfig app (it must be on your programs menu) and set plugin height to 38 (or higher if you customize the icons to be bigger), then sellect Ribbon on the combo box and click "Set Today's" button. Then on the actions menu (left softkey) select Edit AppDB, add as much app's as you wish (needed fields are title, name and exec, only select an icon if you wan't to override the default of the app). Select the app's you want to be on the Used list. After all that add throttletoday plugin to your today screen.
If you wan't to make some playing with the setup you can take a look at this tutorials
http://www.throttlelauncher.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=8
You can for example eassily set the ribbon to be 2 rowed, add a clock, add contact photodial ribbon, etc etc .
edit: removed atachment as it contained an error. Look some post's below for the correct one..

Sorry... my fault... there was an error on the zip. Setup xml must be inside a folder called Ribbon on the setups folder and not directly inside it. Here you have an update of the simple ribbon setup and the one of the screenshots above (this last will require a little work still but I upload it so you can test it ).
i was wondering if there was any way to disable the animation of the weather on the home screen background in sense 2.1? It seems to slow down scrolling in 2.1 and 2.5. to me atleast

Hello. Long time lurker, first time poster.
So, I want to have my wallpaper of choice on only my home screen, and have the weather animated as well. I'm running Verizon's official 6.5 upgrade with, as I understand it, Sense 2.1 (I haven't been able to confirm that the way I could on the old ROM, though).
I made a cab of the wallpaper with the nearest I could find to the proper settings, which was TouchFLO v2.1 - No Compression - Home Tab. HDWall tells me that I need Co0kieMonster's Patch. I found it here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529730, though it definitely seems to be meant for the Blackstone, and not my Rhodium. Not able to find anything better, and not knowing my specific version of Sense, I tried a number of his cab's, starting with the Verizon specific one, and then running through all of his 2.1 variants. At the best, there was no noticeable change on my phone. At worst, the clock would only display white boxes with bits of black in them (and wouldn't flip up to show the text version), the Call History became 0 Missed Calls and my calendar appointments wouldn't show up on the home screen. Trying different settings for home screen only in HDWall either resulted in no change to my wallpaper, or the icon bar at the top being weirdly skinned or turning green (which makes sense, since I wasn't using the correct settings). HDWall works fine creating a wallpaper for all my tabs, but I don't want that.
So then, does anyone have a solution to suggest? I can't imagine I'm the first one to have tried to do this with this particular configuration. Any advice and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I believe this is what you are looking for: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503511&highlight=hdwall

Gah! That was sooooo easy! It was just a cab! I'd put probably three hours into getting this to work, and there was a cab for it. Thank you so much!!
So now I have another question:
When I installed the cab, the top curtain on my home screen disappeared. I was thrilled about this, because I was going to get rid of it next anyway. As a result, though, the clock shifted upwards to fill the space (around 1/4"), but the weather animations didn't. In most cases this doesn't mean anything. However, when it's sunny and there's the lens flare, it comes from just below the sun instead of inside it. When icicles form on the clock, they're happening a quarter of an inch below the top edge of the clock, rather than on the top edge.
These are minor issues, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a fix. Thanks in advance...
I already have weather animation on mine. I didn't add anything. Is this stock T-Mobile 6.5/2.1?
Mine's the stock Verizon 6.5/2.1. My issue isn't that I don't have the weather animations (I do, both with the default wallpaper and, thanks to the above cab, with custom wallpapers as well), but that the clock on the homepage isn't where the phone thinks it should be, which results in the weather animations being misplaced a bit.

I don't think it will, no. The weather clock on the homescreen is limited to WinMo 6.5 and Sense UI, as far as I know, and this cab is for that.
Once your official ROM upgrade hits though, you should be able to use it, so maybe save it until then. It shouldn't be more than a month and a half before it's released.

Thanks, but this doesn't seem to allow replacement of the flippy clock, it just makes it better behaved. Unless I'm reading the intro message wrong.
"Flick" up anywhere on your home screen and the clock will change to a smaller, non "@#$%^&* flippy" one. It isn't the best looking, but it might be what you are looking for.

Hi,
I'm using HTC HD Mini for last couple of months now. Though I love some of the weather, clock animations, at times I feel its slowing my phone.
Does anyone knows how to hide the clock, weather and call history section from the home screen?
Can I have just simple wallpaper screen without these animated clock and call history section?
I would love to see the static wallpaper instead of these animated widgets.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
- Abhijeet
That would be awesome!!!!!!!!!
All settings->home->items and uncheck HTC Sense choose home plugins you want.
Not like that way...
There's no way to remove the clock, weather, and call history link on the homescreen.
Although i found a way to speed things up. The biggest resource hog among them is the weather app. Disable the weather tab, and do NOT update it. Let it just die off after a few days.
With no more data for weather, and the weather tab disabled, the weather animations and info on the homescreen will soon disappear. Leaving only the location written under the big clock cards. This will free up several megabytes of ram. I'm not sure exactly how many mb. But somewhere closer to 10mb. Giving your HD mini phone a boost in stability and speed.
Until Cookie's Home Tab isn't compatible with HD mini I think it won't be possible to rearange/add/remove items on HTC Sense home screen. Unfortunately Cookie Monster is not going to do it, but he allows anyone who can do it to base on his work and port it to HVGA, so we have to wait... I hope
