EDIT: This information is out dated now but visit the link below for updated info.
taken from here http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/rooting/root-access-(finally-achieved!)/
1) Partition your SD Card to have first partition as fat16 and second ext3 [this tutorial assumes you have this setup exactly as stated]
2) Boot in Test Mode with Call+Center+Power
3) copy root into your tools directory of the sdk
4) adb push root /system
5) adb shell chmod 0755 /system/root
6) adb shell /system/root
7) unplug usb, remove battery, reboot into test mode when instructed
8) adb shell
9) /system/bin/btld_testmode
10) /system/root
Excellent. It work!. Just do exatly the steps above. Thanks for putting all this info together.
FYI... Samsung post the source code of the samsung moment.
Is this temp or persistent root? For temp root I don't think partitioning the sd card is necessary or at least I didn't partition it when I temp rooted my Moment.
Was a long time WinMo user, I was stuck with a Moto Q9c on sprint for way to long. I'm still stuck with sprint, but got the Moment in hopes of having a badass Android to start with.
Night and Day compared to my Q, the root is key though, custom rom's were so easy on the Q.
soooo im a newb to android, same question as johnbarry3434.
does it stick?
I've got two Moment's(thanks sprint for shipping me 2 and charging me for neither) ?maybe one for test purposes?
Anything I can do to help the rooting process, please let me know
Sorry guys but I'm very new to this android. Only had my phone for a week now. Is rooting like flashing a custom ROM for the Touch Pro?
Does this require seperate adb drivers for the Samsung phone?? If so where can I get them and are there any avaliable for Ubuntu???
Hi guys,
I have just gotten myself a Samsung Spica. Can I use this guide as well? Is there a ROM-update tool for the Spica?
I'm really n00b, so any help is appreciated
I need someone with this rooted phone to contact me, I need to get some data from it so I can work on something for it.
Please contact me at [email protected]
Thanks
hey look i am brand new to this whole root thing i just got my moment two days ago i am used to the simple jailbreak iphone stuff but this is a whole new level
i am on windows vista and i do not understand any of this at all please someone email me some simpler instructions or make a video or something just to help me out in some way please and thank you
my email: [email protected]
use the search Service people
Now that moment is rooted?
Will there be any chance of us getting a custom rom of andorid using sense ui?
i dont really see any point in rooting my phone if there is no MAJOR thing you can do with it..
I cannot get my samsung to root
I have the updated cupcake cl14 and when I boot my phone with talk+center+power, I boot into a test mode that lets me test the screen, keyboard, and so on. I did copy the root file (supplied from the instructions ) to the main part of my card on both partitions, and partitioned it just as it stated in the 1st step. I don't understand what the "adb" is and how to use it. Can this only be down with windows because I'm am using Ubuntu. I know adb is advance debugging bridge but after some google searches I still don't know how to use it. I now a little about chmod 0755 because of Ubuntu but any "hand-holding" instructions would be great thankyou to everyone who is willing to help me and others out with this problem.
Is there still no "real" benefit for root access for the Moment? As in no good reason to root the phone? My girlfriend has one and I was hoping that it was at least close behind my Hero by now in terms of root access benefits....TIA

just got my phone and can't increase the size of the fonts was told rooting is the only way even with using spare parts.
first of what program can I use to partition the sd card I am running windows XP. and everything I have downloaded today would only see the internal drive.
For those of you still looking for how to root your Samsung Moment (you don't have to use your SDCard either) there are two HOW TOs posted at PPCGeeks under the NON-WM DEVICES>ANDRIOD>SAMSUNG MOMENT
One explains how to root phone with CJ05
The other explains how to root phones that have CL14 out-the-box or officially updated to CL14
I would post a link except I'm not permitted to post an outside link... just go to PPCGeeks(dot)com and click on their forum
So what Now!!!!
Okay I see you have this placed here.. I like... I have a Nexus and 2 Droids, wife and mine.. Nexus ALL mine.. HAHAHA..
My sister, wifes sister, she has the Moment.. I have always wanted to root this just cause of the 800mhz processor... This was the first device to almost meet up with the Nexus before it was even thought up..
Is there Roms, Themes, Kernels, etc.. I see nothing, but a root, useless, without an accommodation, thanks anyway, always good to have the key to the door first..
Somebody, PM me if not on, or reply here, I'll come back around...
cool that i made the front page but the info is out dated now.
yes this info is way outdated. just flash the kernel with speedyrabbit's or joeykrim's kernel and you'll have persistent root, plus a much faster phone.
also, speedyrabbit's kernel has wifi tether and flash_image support. you can download from www(dot)sdx-developers(dot)com.
I have made a goldcard which seems to work fine but when I run rootTattoo i get lots of errors such as no memory left and out of space. Anyone had a similar problem ?
Nope...worked fine for me back then...did u insmod tattoo-hack.ko?
No i did not what should i do ?
Well no originally i ran a batch file that has all of the commands but it did not work , then i tried manually and when i tried to change perms on the m7 file, "adb chmod 755 /data/local/bin/m7" i get a permissions error ? and hence the later changes do not work.
I have this problem with my phone when i first got it and when i updated to the offical orange rom from the htc site
and the only way i could get over it was to flash the htc wwe-rom download (goldcard needed)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=603286
its at the bottom of the first post then i rooted with iclick and all worked...
hi
Ive recently bought a htc tattoo and trying to root the phone but with no luck
every time i keep updating the RUU i get a error message 131 customer ID, even when trying to root the phone with 1click root it appears a message no more space left, i have also made a goldcard with my sd card and it worked but dont know why i can't root my tattoo?
Hi folks, i'm looking for 2 days a way to solve my DHD problem:
It can't boot anymore. It pop up the "htc quietly brilliant" screen, play the boot sound and, start this step again, and again, and again...
So I'm googling a LOT about how to solve this, if exist a way to restore the original rom. Because i'm thinking that was the problem, my original rom is gone.
That happens when i try to install 3 softwares from appbrain, my device got freeze and i hit the power button to reset. So, after that, my device is gone.
So i came here, to ask you folks: There is a way to recover the original rom ? Without send to warranty (because it spend something like 1 month here).
I'm not a mobile hacker or something, i'm just trying to be happy with my device.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my poor english!!
Perhaps try booting to the bootloader, by holding Power + Volume down button. From there, you should be able to do a factory reset, which may or may not fix your problem. Worth a shot at least, imo
And if it does not work when you do a factory reset, you can use a rom.zip from HTC RUU to restore your phone.
Now the important thing is to know which HTC rom you are running. If it is unbranded, 1.72.405.3 is a sure shot. Download the RUU.exe from Stock roms thread in android development subforum, and run it. When the window pops up, open run prompt, and type: "%TEMP%". Then search for rom.zip, copy it to your desktop, rename it to PD98IMG.zip and put it to your SD card (I hope that you have a card reader). Then just reboot to bootloader as tmh described, and watch the magic happen
Then if your phone is branded, you can still use the same technique to make PD98IMG.zip, but you have to get the RUU that matches your branding. There are lots of RUUs in android development subforum, just search.
Hi guys,
thanks a lot for quik reply!
I perform the procedure indicated by tmh, but without lucky ;\
I think it is unbranded. I buy it at Portugal and i'm using at Brazil right now.
I'll perform your tip jkoljo.
I'll post a repply to let people know if it works or not.
Thanks a lot!!
Hope the advice the last guy gave helps , a factory re set may work fine and fix the issue. Iv had 3 dhd since the day of release , the second one I had wouldn't switch on, had it replaced by Vodafone . Not sure weather or not they will give you a new one . Hope u get it fixed

I'm not sure if i got cover from warranty.
Right now, my "PROOF OF PURCHASE" is at europe, and i'm at america, so i must get this work again by myself, or pay (some expensive value, i think) for htc support.
I found those ROM version:

the different is just the radio version. just try flash one of them and see if that work.
WWE means World Wide English, which is an international release
Any one of those RUUs you linked is ok, as hedayat7 already said.
WWE is World wide English...so both are english Roms...try the RUU flash, it should work like a dream....

Sorry ask for your help again, but at Official thread (thread number 841207) for DHD files, both 1.72.405.3 links are broken.
So i search for another thread, and found another one, but when i run the .exe, it ask for a USB connection to device, so it appears wrong.
Could you gimme a hand to find the correct file?
PS: I can help with a web hosting to all correct files.
You probably found the correct RUU, now proceed to %TEMP% and copy rom.zip to desktop.
You can find RUUs here: http://xdafil.es/index.php?path=DesireHD/RUU/
I am not completely sure if those zip files are actual rom.zips, you can check that. Open up the zip, and if it has a long list of hboot, system, android-info.txt etc, then it is rom.zip and you can just go ahead and rename it to PD98IMG.zip.

But i did that.
The "1.72.405.3" files at this URL are broken (Or need password to access it, because "You don't have permission to access" message pop up).
When i run the RRU i got two screens, first i must accept a advice, the second one ask if I have a USB connection to my device. Even when i proceed to next step, i got no .zip file on my %TEMP%.
Im lost because of that lol
UPDATE: OK I FOUND IT! haha ty
Thanks a lot my friends,
but it doesn't work.
I perform the process for 2 different roms, and it doesn't work.
Still can't boot.
I'll sent for warranty and wait a loooong time..
But thanks a lot for help me with this!!
Ok, then there is something wrong in the device itself. You have to send it to a service center.

Hi again,
i keep a little hope that i can restore my phone, so i found a possible solution:
OTA update.
At "showthread.php?t=667728&page=2", i found a guy with the same problem i think, here is the quote:
Kinma said:
I had the same problem last week.
I suspected it had to do with the EXT3 partition.
Solved it by first flashing the OTA 2.2 ROM (for rooted users) as this does not use the EXT3. Then used Rom manager to recreate the EXT3.
Now all ROMs that use the EXT3 run fine!

So, i start a search for OTA update file here, and found at "showthread.php?t=885996".
But when i choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip", i got INVALID OPERATION.
Someone have a tip for me about this?
Thanks (its very sad, but i must keep hope).

You are welcome.
What happened was that after a reboot of the phone the phone started rebooting in the boot sequence, i.e. a boot loop.
I tried a lot of things and nothing worked.
Finally I suspected that the problem might be with the SD card. I had a backup, so I had no problem doing a factory reset.
Then I booted the phone without the SD card.
The phone booted fine.
That way I was certain that the problem was with the SD card.
I had 2 partitions on the SD card, an EXT3 part and the rest was a normal Fat part.
I could still read the card, so I made a backup of all the data on the card.
Then I reformatted the card using windows.
The phone booted fine with an empty, reformatted, SD card.
Since I use Apps 2 SD, I had to recreate the EXT3 partition.
If your rom does not use this, you do not have to do this.
After recreating the EXT partition, put back all files that I want on my SD card.
My advice would be to do a factory reset and after that boot the phone without the SD card.
If the phone boots, you know the problem is with the card.
Hope that helps; good luck!

Hi folks,
boot without the SD card, doesn't work =(
I'm really without luck with this.
I do:
- Factory reset
- Clear cache and userdata
- Boot without SD or/and SIM cards
- Reflash RUU WWE 1.72.405.3 Radio 26.04.02.17_M2
- Reflash RRU WWE 1.72.405.3 Radio 26.04.02.17_M2 SF
- erase all SD
One show was use OTA update.zip, but at this step i got "invalid operation"
SO, nothing works!
Well, it appears a lost battle =\
thanks folks for all help.
Yeah, there must be something wrong in your device itself, for example a motherboard fault. Send it back to HTC.

Hi,
I found the information extremely useful. Big Thanks
GRuti
Guess what, you're not going to root using a Mac. I've been screwing around for days trying to root my HTC MyTouch 4G only to find out that it just won't work using a Mac. Does ANYONE have any ideas besides buying a PC?
I tried to post in the Android Development forum, but I have to wait for my 10th post before I "qualify".
I've been getting errors, S=ON, root.rar, just about everything. STILL UNABLE TO ROOT. I can temp root with Visionary r11, but try finding r11. I can also view the contents of my SD card. I have done a factory hard reset, pulled the battery, pulled my hair out, and even invented a few cuss words with Apple and iMac as the suffix.
Is anyone else using an iMac that had success? I've seen a few threads where people have said it "should" work. After trying to root since Thursday, and now it's Saturday, I'm all out of patience. AND...my O.C.D. medication (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is running out. Should I throw in the towel and go back to my Metro PCS Go Phone?
"Please have a look at those threads before you start a new one." Yes, I did. I looked through every post I could find. I've downloaded Zip file converters, SyncMate (which will NOT uninstall- it invaded ther Mac O.S.), as well as other programs.
Please, if you have any ideas regarding Macs and rooting, I'd appreciate it. (My wife would too).
Brad
Whaaa you know you don't even need computer to root right? So forget the PC/Mac BS just use the Visionary meth and download root.sh to your SDCard and then from terminal run the script, reboot. If you need help let me know, I repeat you don't even need computer.
I tried that once in the beginning. I'll try that again. I'm just wondering if it's really worth it to root using this method. When I want to flash a new ROM, or get into the heavy duty mods, I'm sure it will be a pain in the keester without a computer.
Ill tell you little secret don't tell anyone okay? You don't even need freaking computer to do anything. You can download whatever you need directly in SDCard and flash it. If you do need to do something you can do it via terminal before or after. So root using Visionary as I said and then download the rom directly in your SDCard and then flash it.
That's the truth, you don't need a computer to do crap. You can use the gfree method if you want too, just temp root and use Root explorer, or any other system file manager to do all the things adb push would have to do.

Have you tried "*228"? I had that problem after an OTA upgrade to gb.
Have found SBF, but am getting "Critical Errors 1337 & 510B"
The tale...
* Had Milestone X rooted using one of several methods readily available for download.
** Overzealously updated using the OTA about two weeks ago from Motorola without removing Superuser or Busybox.
*** Messed up and tried to flash using a verizon sbf to return phone. (Didn't brick it, but it would stop at the boot loader with errors waiting for a reflash from usb.
**** Got a warranty return!
*****Tried different methods to no avail!
************************************************************
Thought because of the info in this URL that I'd screwed up in returning my phone or trying to flash in the first place (just needed to use the adb interface to uninstall, remove, the files from their locations) and reinstall-->
WARNING for Droid X: Previously rooted DX owners who took an OTA update and then lost root should proceed with caution. This seems to only work flawlessly on SBF'd DX's or fully factory stock ones(read: never been rooted). The problem is with getting Superuser installed because it is already on your phone from when you were rooted previously.
rootzwiki.com/topic/3216-rootunroot-droid-3-root-instructions-one-click-added-for-windows-linux-osx/
Using info contained here might have worked...
psouza4.com/droid3/#droidx
If you are trying to root from the OTA Gingerbread update and you were previously rooted, you will probably experience problems with this root method because of the pre-existence of busybox and superuser.apk. For that reason, you may need to attempt both the script method (for Windows XP users) and program executable method (Windows Vista/7 users). If you are still having problems, please follow these instructions:
Open a Command Prompt in the folder where you extracted the one-click root package (see instructions for rooting). If you are using Windows 7, you can just use Shift+Right-Click on the folder you extracted the package and choose to "Open a command prompt here". For other operating systems or versions of Windows, you may require some DOS experience or need to Google how to change directories.
In the command prompt, type the following command:
adb shell
If you receive any kind of error, then you may not be in the folder where you extracted ADB.exe or you may need to reboot your computer, your phone, or check the connection. You should receive an ADB prompt ending with either a # or a $.
If the line ends with a $, then run the one-click exploit for Windows XP (even if you have Windows Vista or 7) and only complete step 1.
When you have adb shell ending with a #, type the following commands:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system
rm /system/bin/su
rm /system/xbin/su
Ignore any messages that warn you about the file not being found/missing. We're removing old copies of su/superuser which are causing this one-click root method to fail.
************************************************************
NOW TRYING TO GO BACK TO 2.2.2 Froyo! Why, so I can try to root uninstalling the Su and Busybox rooting after OTA update. Would reinstall and try later.
************************************************************
Since I've gotten a fresh phone but the 2.3.5 update applied, I'm trying to return it to 2.2.2 stock. I've tried two different SBF claiming to be the correct ones. The one that is recognized by 4.9 RSDLite can be found here-->sites.google.com/site/1kdsdroidx/home/milestone-x-sbf-files
But I get those funky errors for which I can see no end except maybe trying XP. I've placed at the root of C: and given RSDLite administrative privs.
************************************************************
The other one that I've tried is named SHADO_X6_3.2.6_SHADOW_BP_C_02.06.00R_AP_BP_Flex_21_signed_secure_cell_south_1ff_P3_USERBLD.sbf.gz
but isn't even recognized!
Forgot url.
Please Help?!
Oh yes, I may have to crank up Debian or Kubuntu (have been with Debian since Inspiron 8200 and bf2.4 ! Just have gotten spoiled by Kubuntu (apt-get from terminal though) on this same laptop. They're already installed.
Just kinda frustrated. I've done a bit of homework and gotten a bunch of bought sense. Please help me out. Maybe I just get back to 2.2.2 and wait or try to root, remove offenders, and re-root.
Thanks.
a Droid X and Milestone X are different. Which do you have?
Yup, using Milestone X now to write thiz reply. I'm getting the idea that somehow the OTA blocks downgrading. This OTA has hosed tethering even with Easy Tether unless, there's user error. I'd like to go back to 2.2.2 cause it was a cinch to root. The interface for 2.3.5 is just plain easier to use. I can deal w Froyo though. Any help would be appreciated.

Almost forgot, cellular south....C-Spire. Need it to tether wirelessly to post grades and lesson plans online when my renter is just to slow to get a line added for at&t. Heck, took 9wks just to get gas hooked up.
I don't know specifics about cellular south or how the milestone x, different from the DX, but you should be able to sbf back to froyo kernel if the sbf for your carrier and version exist. Also, tethering without the carriers permission requires root and you said you lost it.

Have tried to sbf using rsdlite 4.9 and files listed in my first post. Using rsdlite with one file yields errors of 510B and 1337. The other file after decompression is not even recognized. I've been looking all over for those errors and have not found a definitive explanation. Furthermore, I've used both Windows 7, administrative rights, and XP in an administrative account with the files always at the root of the drive with the same ends.
Also, I've running installs of Debian and Kubuntu, but think I'll run into similar problems/errors. If I find someone who hasn't performed the update, reverted their phone back to stock, could I generate that sbf file?
Any suggestions about the errors or recreating a viable sbf file? How about using rsdlite 4.8, an earlier version?
Thanks.
just got my milestone x already had 2.3.5 update on it. can i root?
not at the time of this post that I can tell, unless you can sbf back to froyo (2.2.2) and apply one of the many rooting solutions found on the net.
I believe, more than look and feel, or even functionality or bug fixes, that 2.3.5 more so than the other releases offered by other carriers such as 2.3.4, was to do away with rooting or more likely tethering (wirelessly).
I've gotten errors or an unrecognized sbf from those found on the net (reputable sources) that would revert me back to froyo.
I'll list my steps to the error within a couple of days to see if it were just operator error.

you may be right, about the reason for the update. it's a real let down, just upgraded from my rooted hero (that i was forced to turn in (well forced is a way of saying they gave me $80. in trade for it)) to the x and i love it just want my wireless tether back. i can still tether with easytether (paid version) using usb. haven't tried pdanet yet. (i think pdanet allows for wireless connections. been a while since i used it) nope... no wifi tether with pdanet.
otherwise i will more than likely just wait until one of these amazingly intelligent devs figures out how to root it.
i have seen this asked but i haven't found a good answer, is it possible to pull the stock sbf from a non-rooted phone? and if so is there somewhere that the instructions are available.
i am new to motorola, coming from htc, so please forgive my ignorance if this is all common knowledge stuff.
