Trackball light when watching movies - Hero CDMA General

I rooted and put Damage's rom on my phone a few weeks ago when the 2.1 leak came out. When I was on 1.5 and I would watch a movie from my sd card, all the lights on the phone would go out (except the charging light if plugged in). It wouldn't matter if it was light out or in a dark room, the bottom panel lights would all turn off.
I noticed in damage's rom, they stay on when watching videos. This is slightly annoying to my wife at night when she wants to sleep. That light is so bright it lights up the entire room. I just flashed Fresh 2.0d just to try it out and decided to check the lights when watching video there, and it's the same thing.
Is there a way to fix that?

HA!
at last! a reason the light sensitive leds can be considered a BUG.
this just made my day.
thank you.
and no theres no fix

Lol, I actually miss the "broken" trackball light, I'd just as soon disable it all together if I knew how.

So you are saying the way it was on 1.5 was considered broken and now it's not?
Is there a way to break it again? LOL

its all a matter of opinion. anyone who knows me knows i made love to my trackball led for so long on 1.5 that when i switched to 2.1 i went into withdrawls.
id advice nandroiding to 1.5 everysingletimeyouwanttowatchamovie (j/k)
live with until the evo
bigger screen, and hey! no trackball!
oh, yeah, and a FN KICKSTAND

Ok for a real answer to the trackball.. We dont have source to the .29 kernels that the 2.1 roms use. Trackball and camera are 2 main things no one knows much about. The only fully working trackball (in every way, like in movies) will be on the 1.5 roms as of now. Until sprint releases its update, or releases the .29 kernel.
Or if some dev like toast wanted to spend every moment back porting the trackball to the .27 kernel. Which for most of the people here, it would be a waste.

[Q] whats a cognition-like ROM for the fascinate?

I have a captivate and have cogniton 2.2 beta 9 installed, my cousin just bought a fascinate and wants me to put a rom on for her, i just dont know which one to use.
The phone is super slow stock, and has bing instead of google, so id like to at least fix the lag on this phone.
So whats a cognition-like rom for the fascinate, and what is better/worse about it?
uhhh, I'd look up the AOSP Magic ROM, which will get rid of a lot of Verizon and Touchwiz crap, adds in some AOSP apps, deodex/zipalign everything and makes it look fairly stock Android.
Then, I guess flash a jtt Voodoo kernal. Be careful about these because many have been having bad luck with our Voodoo so far. Change out the custom boot animation, too. It isn't very classy.
Either use a jt or dirrk Voodoo kernal (both have OC up to 1.2) or Birdman's slightly optimized Barebones kernal that has backlight notifications (the buttons light up on notification) and color fix (makes screen less blue at 100% brightness).
These have all made my phone a little faster when I have used them.
Just be sure to READ UP ON EVERYTHING FIRST. EVERYTHING FOR THE FASCINATE IS IN BETA, AND AS SUCH EVERYTHING IS SLIGHTLY BROKEN RIGHT NOW.
We are nowhere near having an aftermarket 2.2 and the OTA 2.2 is supposed to be coming any month now, so development will continue to be kind of slow until we get it.
Edit: I have no idea what's on Cognition, but I hear it's good and stuff. Care to enlighten me?
whats the most bare essential rom?
I really only want a rom with lagfix/colorfix, being able to change boot animation and then some of the standard apps like setcpu.
really don't want something with a theme and a bunch of other stuff that doesn't interest me
may just do my own rom and find all the stuff i want

Do that and get rid of that awful Bing.
wait for birdman's Barebones Kernel to get Voodoo. It only has backlit notifications and Color fix right now.
Whats all this talk about color fix? My colors seem just fine. No blue here.
Not everyone notices it. Mine doesn't do it either, and I don't normally keep the thing at 100% brightness anyways

LED Camera Flash is dead

I was using Torch to help my friend install his car stereo and I guess I had it on too long, because when I went to use it again the LED wouldnt light up anymore. I tried taking a picture, recording a video, different settings in Torch, but nothing works. Is this something that can be replaced/fixed or do I have a phone without a flash now? I thought LEDs were indestructible...
LED flashes can overheat and burn out.. Oddly enough, their normal lifespan is 20,000 hours. :O So either you were doing some serious lighting, or it was a manufacturer's defect.
try flashing a different ROM and see if the flash works afterwards, if you've been using a custom ROM and are rooted.
If either it does not work after a different ROM, or you have not rooted and flashed a different ROM, i would recommend backing up your stuff and getting a replacement phone. A burned out flash after little, if any heavy use, is a reason for a factory exchange. Definitely.
Good luck, there.
I have the same problem. I will be getting my phone switched out soon. I guess I won't use death ray anymore...

Have u tried reboot?? Sometimes reboots fix this kind of problem..
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I tried reboot. I am rooted and using a custom rom (Villain's gingerbread 1.2) so I'll try backing up my current setup and restoring a backup from when I know it actually worked. I really dont want to send my phone off, its my only phone line but I may have to.
I think you should just exchange it.
Keep in mind that when you exchange a phone with t-mobile they send you the replacement before you have to send back your own, so there's practically no downtime.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
Oh I didn't know that. I'll get it swapped. The flash makes the camera so much better.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Damn, but torch clearly gives you the warning that after 45 minutes the LED started glitching. I guess you shoulda thought of that before.
The lifespan of a product might be of many many hourse, but not on one use, just like a normal bulb.
I definitely didnt leave it on for 45 minutes, maybe 5 continuous minutes at the most. I'm thinking its lose or it was going bad anyway. It went out once before randomly (not using Torch that time) and just started working again on its own, so I ignored it. It still hasnt come back on, so I think its dead this time.
I've left mine on strobing at several house parties for at least 3 hours each time (while charging). Now I read this... I'm scared to do it anymore!! Lol
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I have found that different apps produce different levels of brightness. For instance, the app "Tesla LED Torch" uses the full brightness of the flash compared to "LED Light" which uses a much less intense and most likely more sustainable level of brightness.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
The Torch app that comes with most Roms now has 2 different levels. Death ray, and normal. There's a disclaimer when you select death ray because its inviting impending doom upon your phone.
Tmobile has a new one on its way. They were really good about sending me a new one, I just had to follow a few troubleshooting steps and pretend like it wasnt rooted. I told her (helpdesk lady) my original G1 was rooted and custom romed and she started going "nahnahnahnah cant hear you!" Probably the funniest thing any customer support has done with me on the phone.

Okay so I take it all back

I'm usually that guy that rolls his eyes at crying about 2.2 being released. I make jokes about your phone not automatically dispensing cash after you update it. I tell people to sit on it, it isn't that big of a deal.
Well I take it all back.
I've been running DK28 since it is was available on google (update zip). I switched to various versions of Bonsai, I've run TrulyEpic. I've been pleased with all of them.
The only problem I really have had was on all DK28 based installs, I end up with messaging locking up every 20 or so texts, and it will stick at Sending... until I reboot the phone, then it will send the queue after 45 seconds or so. No big deal really, just a nuisance, and I've seen many others with the issue.
Well two days ago I started getting the 'no audio' phone calls where you have to speakerphone on/off to hear anything. That I can't deal with. I know several have had it happen, but that is just something that can severely affect my productivity and must be stopped.
After fooling around with reflashes a bit I decided to go back to stock(ish). I odin'd back to DI18.
I figured CWM2.5, get my root explorer going again, organize everything how I want and just sit tight until we go official. Learned my fav GTG doesn't work correctly with 2.1; no problem, we'll use LauncherPro and suck it up some more. So I get everything organized how I like it and ready to go.
Crap this sucks. 2.2 really is nicer. Everything is more fluid. Menus are more welcoming in appearance. There is significantly less jitters moving between apps (I'm looking at you, Market). USB connectivity issues are resolved (I totally forgot how finicky 2.1 was with USB cord connecting).
And benchmarks? Yeah forget about them, the difference is depressing.
So yeah, sorry. We really do deserve 2.2 on this phone. It'd just been so long I forgot I'm still keeping 2.1 on it for now... possibly until update (2012 is just around the corner). I thought it might be nice to have a back-and-forth perspective for a change, as I haven't seen many people go back to 2.1 with intention of staying.
TL;DR:
Went back to 2.1
Misses 2.2
Still TL;DR:
Whaaaaaaa!
People keep saying 2.2 is faster. I've put 2 epics side by side one with DI18 one with DK28. Froyo is slower, not by a little, by a lot. Some small things operate a little faster, but in whole the entire user interaction is slower than eclair. I've tried several times, even swapped what phones had what OS, results never changed.
I went back to 2.1 and also think it is faster and a lot quicker to response. 2.2 seemed pretty sluggish to me. The 2.2 Roms were nice but I did not like Ext 4 so I just reverted back to 2.1

See that's strange because I went back and forth several times for about 3 hours last night making comparisons and on mine, it was just the opposite :/
Agreed, there are lots of little things in Froyo that are faster (transitions and stuff), but those I discount because they aren't really indicative of the speed of the phone so much as the way the transition is designed to appear.
Over all though, much less lag between applications on 2.2... the Market being one of the worst to open showing obvious jitters etc.
Funny as it is, I can live with that stuff; the things that really bother me are the totally superfluous things like cosmetics and the simplicity of sticking a usb cable in and the phone figuring out what I want to do on it's own and not asking me to unplug it, change a setting, replug it, etc.
Anywho.... I'll see how long I stick it out
I've been back on stock for almost a week now after trying various ROMs, and I've decided to tough it out until an official update if one comes at all. It's not a bad experience at all for me.
been running Baked Snack 1.6(DI18) over here...... crazy fast! especially on wifi. i like the idea of building a house on a good foundation, so sticking with DI18 for now.
DK28 is a POS... My 2.1 run faster and smoother then any DK28 I've tried... IMO developers should save their energy till we get the official release.
Quantum is nice and fast I got a live wallpaper and it's doing well
I keep switching back and forth between 2.1 and 2.2 Nebula with Ext4 and I have to say that overall, 2.1 with xtreme kernal and Syndicate is just as fast with great battery than the froyo roms. Although Nebula is performing great for me and I do have the occasional glitch from time to time, I think I'm gonna roll with it at least for another week

Quantum is buggy. Probably not the developers fault, as most of the issues are DK28, but I have been running Quantum 2.7 since it came out and I certainly wouldn't use the words "nice" or "fast" to describe it. Also, some of the bugs are absolutely not DK28. I am trying to be very careful not to insult the developer, but the issues that his rom has makes me want to do awful things to my phone sometimes.
I know how you feel OP. I can barely stand using my Epic anymore cause of the sickness it causes. I feel I've been cheated by just buying the phone, thinking that it was gonna be updated with some sort of quickness. It's just depressing knowing that when you spend that much money and are stuck behind 2 O/S upgrades. Hopefully we will get something soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

The way people are around here the last month or so, I'm not sure if that first sentence is sincerity or sarcasm
I actually had no care or consideration for 2.2 when I bought the phone. Wasn't the least of my concerns. I just wanted the newest Sprint smartphone, and I couldn't use an Evo because A) needed a slide out keyboard for certain things that the popup wouldn't work and B) Evos are far more moisture sensitive due to their construction and it wouldn't have lasted a week for me.
Having tried 2.2 out though, it just feels more natural to me. Everyone is back and forth on the speed thing, and that really isn't it for me. 2.2 feels more natural in a lot of respects, both in form and function where 2.1 feels more half-completed. Like comparing a spiral staircase to an aluminum ladder.
My point was that it really does, as far as feeling like a completed unit, -make- the phone. There are glitches etc that aren't part of my consideration as I expect them to be Beta related. No doubt 2.1 is more solid and probably faster at some things than others... speed isn't really an issue for me unless you count the App lag and jitters... they suck.
But yeah, now that i've done side-by-sides of it, 2.2 (in a completed non Beta state) really is what the phone deserves. I'm hoping it does eventually happen.
It's nice to know that the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side. I'm sitting at stock and just waiting for 2.2 to drop. I have no problem rooting (I did the G1 bunches), but I just don't want to go to the trouble of rooting to find a different set of problems. As best I can tell that's what would happen. Even CM Beta 0 is buggy right now. I'll take the devil I know at this point. Thanks for sharing your story.
How is Quantum buggy? I use Quantum 2.1 here without ext4 and I'm not getting any bugs. It's the best rom I've found to date. Froyo is way smoother on basically every single thing I've tried to do than the stock rom ever was.

When I tap the power button to put the phone to sleep, it turns off the screen, pauses a second or two, then turns the screen back on with the lockscreen being displayed. It does this about 50% of the time. No other DK28 rom has done this for me, so its not DK28 that is causing this. The wifi toggle in the notification drop down causes errors probably 30% of the time with Wifi never turning on. There are SMS issues where it will freeze and not send messages. Friends have received multiple messages from me over and over for some reason.
I could go on, but I won't.

Interesting. I ran stock DK28 for a few weeks and it never happened to me. Maybe the bugs I thought were from Quantum were just DK28 being buggy. Its not that big of a deal, yet it infuriates me. Can't wait for official Froyo to be done. Please Samsung, please.

I gave up my Tbolt for now and have purchased a Fascinate. I truly hate the icons and stock theme. I've been looking for the past 2 days on and off for a decent ROM but have yet to make a decision.
All i want is debinged, devzw, stock android icons, and all the phone features working. I can tell that GB is having issues on the Fascinate side as it was with the Thunderbolt so i prefer to keep it Froyo for now.
If anyone is willing to help me out and get started with this i will kindly appreciate your help!

You sir are one of the few people to actually admit that the weight of that phone is too much. Most people are too proud of their new TBolt to admit it weighs more than the moon. Co-worker got one at launch and i tried it out, almost dropped it after holding my Fascinate. Everything feels heavy compared to it however the TBolt is a freaking brick! I could not comfortably walk around with it in my shirt or pants pocket, it would weigh them down so much. The sheer mass has also lead to what I believe are more cracked screens than it should. The Fascinate weighs almost nothing so their's little chance of breaking the glass from an everyday drop.
Thank you all for the helpful links and replies

but does everything work? i was reading under a few roms with GB that there are still some issues. i am mostly concern with sensors working right, volume, camera, and no boot loops.
Only issue with MTD-based ROMs (CM7/MIUI/OMFG-B) is the occasional delay on sensor when pulling phone away from head and a (sadly) very noticeable issue with in-call volume (and volume in general).

MMS got fixed so now its mostly annoyance type things. My sensors and camera and all work fine. Like mentioned, call volume is a bit low....but completely usable. It is my everyday Rom now. Extremely fast. If you talk on it as a phone all day I would wait but if you use it for a lot of surfing and stuff its pretty solid now. Data connection seems to be flaky for some people but on the EC09 modem I have had little trouble and GPS is back to super fast lock.

I'll add another testimonial to this one. I'm using CM7 with the Glitch kernel and it's been a ton of fun. The call volume is a bit low, but I've gotten used to it. When I come out of the call, I usually have to press a button to recall the screen, however, because the sensor doesn't register that I've taken the phone away from my face. By the time that happens, however, the other person has usually hung up.
I've had no data outages (EC09), but Wifi's been spotty. GPS locks very quickly (5-10 seconds) and everything else has been a dream. For a while I was too underclocked and I got some random reboots, but that was hardly the ROM's or kernel's fault.

(I know, AOSP people don't have this issue. Thank you. Talking about stock here.)
Sprint appears to have a nasty habit of releasing phones with this feature intact only to surreptitiously remove it with an OTA patch *after* the phone has been on the market awhile. (This behavior goes back to at least 2003
judging by http://forums.webosnation.com/palm-os-devices-apps/42853-get-call-duration-sprint-t600-call-log.html, and of course the feature was working fine on the Evo until they released the first Gingerbread OTA.)
Why should I have to install an app to fix this?
Then of course there's the unused WiMax Notifier LED. Minor point except when you are charging the phone you get no LED notifications at all.
(I know, AOSP people don't have this issue. Thank you. Talking about stock here.)
With Froyo and earlier you used to be able to run an app called WiMax Notifier and it worked pretty well. But with GB it broke and you needed tons of root elevation to get it to work. LightFlow works ok, but occasionally it misses a notification.
As everyone knows, features that mostly work except intermittently are the worst of all.
For instance, every AOSP ROM since .. ever .. has that annoying thing where you press the power button and the screen doesn't exactly wake up sometimes. The capacitive buttons come on and the LCD is actually doing something, but you wouldn't know it because the backlight doesn't come on. No combination of minimum clock speed or governor *completely* eliminates this, I'm sorry.
Another example: I had to stop running Evervolv because the alarm clock went off with *no sound* a couple times too many. It works great EXCEPT WHEN IT DOESN'T.
Basically, something only needs to fail 1% of the time for you to COMPLETELY LOSE TRUST in it.
Ok there's a few of mine, what are your pet peeves?

Ok we all know the big one, no FFC or WiMax in post-GB ROMs. I got four more. What do you got?

Damn brother, you dont dislike android,do ya?hahaha, you might want to get an Iphone, hahaha.Just kidding, the only thing thats pushing me away from android,is all the OS's look alike, nothings different,i myself am not a ICS/JB fan and im now sick of Sense based roms also,so i am also looking around at different OS's,i'd like to get ahold of this new Jolla Sailfish or the Firefox OS phones, now i would be interested in trying those out.But in all honesty,my favorite flavor is Sense, but i do like the flexability of ICS and JB.
OK, I can come up with a few.
Speaking of the LED. The Light that comes on when it's charging. The light that comes one when you do get a notification. Those aren't the only 2 lights under that little screen. So why can't we use the rest of them.
Up until GB, HTC released code, normally within about a month of a new version. GB took a lot longer. ICS & JB, nada. WTH happened to open Source?
Why did my Ca[citive lights die after my first ICS ROM? Why don't they come back, even when I flash back to Stock/Unrooted?? Why do they work, very occasionally, but really, they're dead. I really miss those lights, especially in the dark.
And to Sprint; Thanks for the slowest 3G speeds on the planet, no 4G and probably no LTE in my area, ever, or at least not for a very long time, but hey, enjoy that 480 extra dollars you've gotten from me in the last 4 years...
Ok here's one I just remembered: AOSP stock "mail" app. Delete a message by accident? No undo. Stays in Trash folder forever.
No way to move a message from one IMAP folder to another?
Seriously? You're making me download a separate slightly-less-bare-bones mail app just so I can find a message I accidentally nuked with a stray touch?
It's like the 3G speeds thing - there's enough irritations *when everything is working correctly*, never mind stuff that is actually broken.
Heck I am happy with all my data speeds but will never have 4g. All I can say about the 4g is that I am glad I don't have to pay that extra for it and not get it. Thanks to the fact I am flashed to someone besides sprint. Almost 2 Mb download burst with a sustained 500 Kb.
Now I have flashed many ics and jb roms and while most of them my back lights work they have never failed to return to working. Sorry to hear that you had that issue hipkat.
Now as far as the aosp lockscreen issue I have only had that issue on a couple of roms. Decks reloaded was the only one I can remember for sure. Yet most of them never gave me any issue in that manner ever.
We all know not every evo is equal. My first one died of the dreaded aosp death. That one never would run decks rom no matter what I tried. My current on will run anything I put on it except one. The only reason for that is the kernel was overclocked to high for my CPU.
Long live the evo!
