Hi.
First post and first HTC phone. Have had the Nokia N95 previously which did the job and had a data counter built in. I am pretty amazed that the HD2 doesn't have one as standard unless I have missed that section in the manual.
Due to big disagreements with my network provider having an accurate count was a necessity and the N95's worked well.
Assuming that there really is no tool built in what would people recommend? I have read other posts and two products seem to get mentioned but wonder what other options are out there. SPB's Wireless Monitor and Smartphone GPRS Traffic Monitor by Efficasoft are listed and both seem reasonably priced (though free would be better of course!). I want to find something that is accurate and will measure ALL data throughput with the phone. I use my mobile (mainly 3G) as a modem on the computer as I don't have a landline so my usage can be either on the pc or directly on the phone if my pc is off. I have BitMeter running on the pc which provides a secondary reading but obviously won't measure any usage if I am using the phone's browser.
Any suggestions would be really helpful.
Many thanks.

I think you've actually mentioned the most commonly recommend ones there - SPB and Efficasoft are both good.
I usually recommend Efficasoft, but that's just because I found it when I was looking for a data counter myself.
Just try both the trial versions and see which gives you the most concise reading. As far as I'm aware, using your phone as a modem should still be counted by both those apps.
Hope this helps

Thanks for replying both of you. I'll give the trials a go.

What is that app? Any more details? I'm a bit wary about just downloading stuff without knowing what it is! I'm sure it is fine but I'm a cautious old fart.
I must admit that I'm a bit unimpressed with HTC's support so far. As I mentioned it is my first HTC phone and their email response time seems very bad. Is that a common experience?
Thanks.

it is a trial of of a payware app. I want a free traffic counter.
OK, I did search for this before I posted so I hope I don't get anybody mad for starting a new thread if this has been covered.
Regarding security threats and android phones. I did see the thread about a malware program out of Russia affecting android phones (installed via a movie program?). But in general, security issues do not seem to be a big issue.
The other threads I've found seem to have conflicting opinions.
So my question(s) is, how much do you all worry about security issues? Does anybody use Lookout (free mobile security app)? I did see that it has high ratings on the market, but I put more stock in what this community has for opinions than the market users.
Again, if this has been covered to death and I missed it, I apologize.
I do have concerns over security and therefore really don't install many apps. Since I have had an android phone, my gmail account has been compromised once, allowing spam to be sent from my gmail account and also spam to be placed on my Blogger site. While I cannot be certain it was something on my phone that allowed this, I rarely use my computer to access any of my Google apps. I also had never had issues with any email or other accounts being compromised for as long as I've had a computer. I also rarely get spam. So while I can't be certain, the fact it showed my account being logged into by a mobile device in Malaysia makes me very suspicious.

Thanks for the reply. I take it you haven't used Lookout or any of the other security apps?
Lookout looks legit, but I am a little skeptical. Guess I'll wait and see if I get any other responses before I do anything with it.
I haven't tried it in the past, as I'm skeptical too. I went ahead and installed it though after my post just to see. It is now being installed by some of the carriers by default apparently and I guess has won some awards, so hopefully it's been poked at a bit by people to where it itself isn't a large threat. Figure if it doesn't impact performance a lot there can't be any harm in trying it. Now, as for how effective it really is, I'd imagine that's something many people will never know.

Again, thanks for your input.
Performance impact is basically what I was worried about. I actually installed it the other day but when I realized it was on ALL the time, I uninstalled it before really giving it a chance.
I guess it's worth a shot. I'll install it again tonight and run a couple before and after quadrant benchmarks to see how much of an impact.
If I don't get anybody else posting here, I'll still post my experience in a couple/few days, so if you're interested, check back later in the week.
Thanks dpeeps, have a good one.

Not paranoid .... just cautious.
There is so much good information on this site that when I search for something that sounds too good (for free), and I can't find anything, yes, I'm going to "err on the side of caution".

you are welcome. i use it mostly for the lost feature. if i lose it i can activate the gps and locate it that way, and i can also make it scream (caution this is really loud, and the only way to stop it is a battery pull) if it is somewhere close to me. it is very effective.
EDIT: they changed the scream feature, now it will scream for 1 minute and you can stop it by turning the volume down on the phone.
only had my DVP for a day and its my first windows phone.....
i have subscribed to the zune service paying each month for the service...i thought this would give me the eqivilant to spotify that i had on my android device However, when i click on albums to either stream or download (from the handset) it asks me if i want to buy...i thought i was paying a subscription for free unlimited streaming or download same as spotify.
can anyone advise me please
also is it possible to get spotify on my phone
thanks
I think you have to tap and hold on the album/song to get a download option, here's a video: http://www.wpcentral.com/how-get-zune-pass-work-on-the-go-windows-phone-7.
As for Spotify, that was announced as coming with Mango but not sure which countries.
When I hold the only option I get is to buy the item. Seems odd considering I am paying for it.

That sounds like your zune pass subscription is not active. Are you logged in with the email associated with your Zune pass?

When you setup your phone, the login must be the same one used for Zune. Not the second or third...the first.
If you have done it any other way you must hard reset and start over.
If the phone login is the same as your Zune login and it does not work, call Zune support to help you.

the problem was that i had signed into zune on my phone with a different account to the one on my computer.
very annoying though that the only way to resolve it was to completley format the phone and start over again....lucky i guess that i have only had it a few days.
thanks to all of you who had helped me to sort it though.
i am sure there maybe a few other questions i need help with also..

Annoying? This is the way it has been since day one. Its mentioned in the startup guide. Efjay pointed you to the video. All the MS documents online point to this. All the Zune docs point to this. For problems of this nature, how to's, keep WindowsPhone.com in mind. Phone setup, configurations snd how to documentation is great. XDA is great for the more difficult problems.
Sorry for raising a thread on what was clearly quite 'simple' issue to some...it was annoying the gell out of me! I pay as a 'premium' user on here and wanted to make use of all the great knowledge on here rather than trawl the internet or spend hours on the phone. I will however come up with a more challenging problem fir you next time=P
Thanks anyway

Don't be like that. Annoying and Challenging are 2 different things. XDA is a great source of issues, resolutions, work arounds, and challenging problems. On XDA you will find great ideas, fun experiences, and, a sound kick in the butt if you don't do your research before posting a problem. If you search and do NOT find what you're looking for, there are dozens of people ready to help. But....if you do not do the search before posting....there are dozens of people ready to remind you of that before they help.
Thats just the way it is...and it makes no difference if you're a premium user, or just a bum like me. The same rule applies for us all.
How MS, or any other company, designs their solutions, is always open to debate. Annoying and irritating simply cloud the issue. Android and Apple require a login on their phone for their services. If you do not use the same or correct login, you will not get your apps restored, or access to many of the histories saved with those services....to include backup and restore, and Music. Thats just the way it is. XDA premium users have little influence on those design methods.
Sorry if I offended you with my reply. That was not my intent. Reminding you that a little research would have allowed you to find the answer, and see that the resolution was not clouded, hidden, or designed to cost you a premium subscription to XDA, was my only point. If you're annoyed at the way things are...I'm afraid there is not a reasonable resolution available on these forums.
BTW..how does one become a premium subscriber to XDA?
your response seemed a little 'sharp' and in my opinion was not really necessary...i received good advice on here, it solved my problem, and i thanked those concerned.
By 'premium' i mean i pay for the app to support the cause and not just use the free downloaded one
Anyways moving on....
Point made.

Tried to find a relevent thread to put this under but they mainly seem to be about apks and under different phone discussions ...
So what with USB OTG looking unlikely (at least for the meantime, but maybe forever) for the Nexus 4 and no SD card slot I find myself in the position of sort of being strongarmed into using Google Music.
My question here is about pirated music. I'm sure my collection (alike to most peoples) isn't entirely free of this, and if it counts the CD's I converted into mp3s when I first bought an mp3 player then it definitely isn't.
So I have no problem if google music deletes anything that it doesn't deem legit, that's cool. I'm not however cool with them then notifying sony or something and a million dollar (pound) lawsuit then being dropped on me ... I've been doing some googling but haven't really found much of a discussion about this.
Anyone got 2 cents to add in? Is it safe to upload everything to google music and then let them sort it out?
You'll be fine.

have a few songs on there for quite some time now and no issues so far?
I've uploaded my entire music collection to both Google Music AND the Amazon Cloud Player and I'm sure there some pirated albums in there.. but nothing has been deleted and no police have smashed my doors in.
You'll be fine. The Google service is very good too - the tag editing is much better than Amazon's for example. I no longer need a PC to manage my music. I have a 16GB N4 and I created an "Essentials" playlist on Google Music containing my absolute favourite songs and I've made that permanent on the phone - so it downloaded all the songs automatically. And it's pretty sweet having access to your entire collection via a decent connection.
.....how would they even no ? Its not like you labeled them; song1 album6 stolen from artist 2. Lol
This is a question my parents would ask..I find it naive.

Well there are all sorts of data points they could compare, the easiest being to compare file size and the MD5 hash of known rips (although the latter is easily changed) but I presume they would use several different factors and maybe use some sort of spectral analysis and check any watermarks.
In fact youtube already does things along these lines.
I doubt they would catch on to CDs ripped by individual people, but for example, tracks from a popular torrent would be fairly simple to identify especially once vast numbers of people start uploading the exact same files, which don't correlate to a legitimate source.
It would be quite easy for google to compile a lists of things that were definitely pirated, and definitely legitimate. If you were in between you'd probably be fine too, but anything taken from a popular torrent i'd imagine would definitely fall into a blacklist.
There would be various ways around this, if necessary I'm sure someone will make an application to go through an subtly alter elements of your music collection to ensure it wouldn't match any database of known rips, maybe by inserting small silences (even if just a fraction of a second) at the beginning or end of tracks and changing a number of other attributes that wouldn't affect playback.
So yeah not naive at all, you just clearly didn't think about it enough.
It all comes down to if Google is bothering / cares and what action they intend to take if they do find material which obviously comes from a pirated source. As I mentioned if they just remove it - no problem could either circumvent their checks or purchase the missing songs, but if they may have to (even if not now but at a later date) give out the credentials of anyone whom they have found with pirated material that could be a problem.
I've looked around for posts like this with no luck and nothing on Google search as well. I am sure many people have lots of pirated music on there and I haven't heard of any issues whatsoever which is a good sign. Or they're waiting and lulling us into a false sense of confidence before screwing us all haha

Just because your file matches the common torrent files doesn't mean it actually is the common torrent file. If two people rip and verify with AccurateRip the files -should- be identical.

Google is not the police. Google would make no money scaring people away by prosecuting people with files they may or may not know are illegal.
If a company wanted to invest a LOT of money in legal fees to somehow make a court force Google to release our private files so that said company can scan them for watermarks etc. you might be at risk, but I very much doubt an outside company could get the power to do that.
Thread necro!
Any new information about this since way back when this thread was? I know someone who isn't me that wants to use google play music, but they may or may not have some questionable music files. Is it cool to upload it?
It's fine. I use play music all the time and my collection isn't fully legit.

April 4 2014: Google Patents a Way to Keep Pirated Content off of Google Play

I know a lot of people complain about the official Facebook app, slowing down their phone. I just wanted to inform people that that is not the case for me. Simply because I don't have an account or the app.
Onto more relevant stuff: Under the Hood: Dalvik patch for Facebook for Android and Koush does a quick explanation. For those that have the time and curiosity, read the comments on Koush's post. Very enlightening.
Quite an interesting read. Thanks for the links pons.
The slowness is also a reason I switched to the app tinfoil.

I tried atrium, it was supposedly the top alternative in an article I read but was an immediate failure because it couldn't find a friend.
I would certainly like to know exactly what purpose the face book app has taking up 17mb on my precious dinc fresh off the market. I've seen it swell in excess of 40 mb with heavy use. Get outta here! It seems completely absurd and a bit arrogant of the Facebook corporation to clog up everyone's devices and hide god knows what kind of unpublished ill will in the code.
I wish someone would reverse engineer or whatever so we know why it is so big.
