Micro USB Cable?

Does *any* Micro USB cable work with the Nexus One?
Like this one:

The G1 USB cable I currently use was the same price as the above, but it was actually branded as a "G1" cable.

yes, any micro USB cable. Heres a breakdown:
If your phone has an extUSB port, any extUSB cable or miniUSB cable will work.
If your phone has a miniUSB port, any miniUSB cable will work, extUSB would work but it cannot physically fit into a miniUSB port.
If your phone has a microUSB port, any microUSB cable will work, but no miniUSB or extUSB will work.
extUSB is HTC's semi-proprietary USB port which is simply miniUSB with an audio connector and unique socket shape.
All USB ports and cables of the same form factor have the same pinout.
MicroUSB has replaced MiniUSB and all new released portable devices will have microUSB most likely.

Xperia X10 miniPro connections?
Hi Folks - This is my first post and still getting used to how this board works, so please be patient with me!
I've got a similar problem regarding miniUSB leads... I've recently bought a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 miniPro... It charges via the USB port but the connector is not standard!
I'm wondering if anyone knows the pin-out of the socket and also where leads with such a connector can be purchased online?

All microusb cables are not the same I found this out recently.
I bought a microusb "blackberry" that fit into my nexus one no problem but when I tried to use it to transfer files; windows would act like it didn't know what device it was.
Now i'm currently using a kodak microusb that will allow windows to know its the nexus one and I can I mount my phone but everything is copy write protected.
So when I get home I have to go back to my old beat up cord that wont stay in my phone until I find a suitable replacement that will let me mount and access the files.

I bought some blackberry microusb cables on Amazon for a penny back in March (yes, 1 penny each!). They work perfectly for everything. I guess somehow wondercoolguy managed to find cables that were even cheaper then mine

This BB wire fits the nexus like a glove but hates transferring information. Yes I got my wire for 1.00 from a mertine if I remember correctly....I hate that place

Afaik any micro usb cable will work. Micro usb is the new standard.
I haven't seen any charging-only cables but that is a possibility.

I have been using micro-usb cable for my external disk, Nexus/GalaxyS and my previously own Nokia N97. No problem for charging, transfer files or tethering. I even use old N97 charger (micro-usb connection) on Nexus One before. None of these had any problem.
Micro-USB is a standard connection, there shouldn't be a problem. If there is, it could be due to the system mainboard or mainboard's USB port itself. Try not to connect too many devices through a USB-hub that link up from a USB port of the system. If you really need connect it via a USB-hub, get those hub has a dedicated power adapter.

Just buy any cheap cable, it will work. I also bought two official HTC chargers for my phone as well as some random USB to microUSB cables. All work fine, just as do the cables from my Nokia phones, cameras and cables I found under my girlfriend's bed lol

Car Charger

Does anyone know if you can use the g1 car charger with the Samsung Vibrant? I read that the Samsung vibrant uses mini usb but of course that does not mean it will work properly. Thanks

No, the Vibrant is micro usb, not mini.

Yeah, like it was said, micro usb, but on ebay you can find mini to micro usb converters... I bought 2 for .99 cent a piece shipped and they even transmit data, sadly one has some loose connections but the seller refunded me right away for it.
Other than that I am not sure it's the most efficient (I haven't looked at what the g1 power supply sends amp wise, nor the max the vibrant can take) but it would work, as long as you get the right male end (again, micro usb)
Also, there is a accessories forum that this would have been better suited for.
EDIT: Sorry, I may have spoke too soon. If it was an HTC charger it might not work since only one corner of the male end is cut and the other is straight, that is their proprietary male connector that has extra pins and will not fit in a female mini usb port. Now if it was an aftermarket that was a true mini usb, then you can get a converter... Otherwise you can just get a car charger that has the standard female USB A port and plug in any USB A to Micro cable... Point is, if it is USB you are on the right track.

Followed your tut, gonna do my update, I can't wait for my OTG cable from china to arrive, its almost half way but I can't wait any longer! thanks dude. Off to flashing some updates.

Finished installing the update, all fine and dandy!! tried the camera with the xoom, F-awesome! kinda slow but thats what you get off 18Mpix pics, tried a mouse, kb, all worked perfect...

Can't use bluetooth for flash drives or the ps3 and xbox game controllers (or the other ones the 3.1 update lets you use) XD
I think I'll try this guide when I get home tonight.

I haven't watched the video yet, but couldn't you also just use a USB extension cable instead of a separate usb cable and female usb port? Using an extension cable instead you could just replace the male end with the male micro usb and use heat shrink to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Congrats to OP for the DIY job. My preferred method would be not to cut up the cable, but by shorting pin 4 to pin 5 directly at the shell. This is easiest if all 5 pins are present (sometimes either pin 4 or 5 is missing), as you can simply bridge the two pins with a bit of solder, and quickly apply heat to the connector shell to melt it in place. If one of the pins is missing, then things get a bit more difficult.
The solder bridge wouldn't last for too many insertions, but it should be more than good enough until the real host cable gets to you.

Made the cable well kinda i used a adapter to convert male to female should this still work or does it need to go straight to female?

if you have the bits lying around then its very useful. If your having to buy the components then its cheaper to buy the cable. Like many of others on here, i have thousands of usb cables so was easy for me.

Idea for permanent host-mode switch...

Got the idea a few days ago after looking at the full breakdown of the Xoom...
Here's the idea:
Remove the dock charge contact points, and install a micro switch in its place. With the switch in place, find the proper contact points for ground and the host-mode pin on the micro USB port. Solder some 30 AWG to the contact points on the board, then to the switch, and put everything back together.
This would give you the ability to use any USB cable as a host-mode cable, while only affecting charging on docking units. With the battery life of the Xoom, I don't see it as a deal breaker.

Well, I only charge on the dock. Way to convenient not to have. I don't trust the standard chargers design to withstand me..
However if you are not a dock user, then it sounds like it would be cool.

Just my opinion, but it seems like a lot of risk and effort for not having to carry around a cable. I mean if you have the standard cable, you still need a male to male adapter to use any usb device. So either way you still need something else besides the standard USB cable. I would rather just have a USB host cable that already has the correct USB ends on it and still be able to use my charging dock.
Again just my opinion, YMMV.

Well normally I'd agree with you, but it seems that most people are having issues getting good cables unless they buy the Motorola cable.
It's easier to find an adapter for the standard USB cable than it is to find an OTG cable as well.
Still just an idea, but I figured I'd see what everyone thought.

all you need is the Motorola Mini-USB to Micro-USB adapter, a USB extension cable and some scissors.
you'd to still carry around a Female-Female adapter for your USB cables with your idea, i'd rather not rip open my xoom and solder **** when the other option is easier.
Also, if you don't plan on upgrading to LTE, you could just wire up a USB port to the card slot for the LTE card, it should have USB routed to it.

This actually sounds like a better idea... Was thinking of how I could add in a full-size USB port to remove the extra cable completely. USB out the top would also allow me to hook up an external HDD and still sit the Xoom up in a cinema position.
The question with doing that though, is will it be recognized as a host-mode connection, and if not how would you get it to act as a host-mode connection without the 'fifth pin'?

USB OTG a few things tested...

I've no idea if this will be of interest to any of you, especially those people who have yet to buy a 5t and are trying weigh up the pros and cons, but USB OTG is something I use all the time, so o it was one of the first things I tested when I got mine. So far I'm really pleased as everything I wanted to work does so. My last device, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, had very poor USB OTG implementation so this is great from my point of view. Maybe I'm behind the times and I had the last phone on the planet with that problem - if so, please delete this mods
First off, before you can use USB OTG, you need to head into settings, then advanced and check the OTG setting. It turns off after ten minutes so I created a link on my homepage using Nova launcher's activity widget menu.
*EDIT* As ny-hardcore has kindly pointed out below, you can also have an OTG quick toggle in notification area. This didn't work for me at first (or I was hitting the wrong thing), but now it does .
Tested and working:
USB card readers of various types, including micro USB readers, with the help of a USB C to Micro USB adapter (5 for £4 on eBay!). The only one that didn't work is a proprietary Samsung multi card reader that also has a full sized USB output and HDMI out too. This isn't very surprising of course, but they're to be avoided if you see one on eBay and assume it's a generic adapter.
80 GB iPod hard drive in a cheap enclosure bought via Amazon.
1 TB 2.5" Western Digital HDD - that's right, no USB hub required, just plug it straight in. The only other portable device I've owned could power it was a Samsung tablet.
2 mega pixel boroscope (using USB Camera app in Play Store) . So useful for finding slow water leaks under the floor or peering down a spark plug hole into a cylinder!!
Micro USB DVB TV dongle, via adapter.
Keyboards and mice via an OTG adapter, including a combination media keyboard with built in trackball mouse (this usually doesn't work on my phones for some reason). The UK keyboard layout is supported via settings so you can have a £ key - woohoo!
Other phones! I plugged my old phone in and discovered I could mount it in MTP mode and then browse its contents from the built in file explorer. For what it's worth, the Oneplus even charges the device that's connected to it.
When you need to eject the device there's a button that appears in the notification area. Sometimes this gets obscured, so swipe down a second time and the 'eject' will appear.
I haven't tried any game controllers yet, but so far the support has been so comprehensive I don't see why there would be a problem.
In the attached photo, the only thing that doesn't work is the black coloured multi purpose card reader on the far right.

In quick toggles you can add an otg switch.
You don't have to go in settings that way to enable otg.

Thanks, for some reason that just didn't work for me unless I went into settings/advanced as well. I can't recall which firmware I was on at the time and I haven't tried since The quick toggles are so far away for my little hands too (please Oneplus add a Xiaomi one handed mode - in fact, make it EXACTLY like Xiaomi devices).
LOL, typical, now it does work for me! I was probably pressing flight mode by mistake or something.

Just FYI, I've tried the following USB DACs with an OTG cable on my 5T and they appear to work:
- Fiio E17
- Meridian Explorer (v1)
- Audioquest Dragonfly (v1)

I just discovered my old Saitek X35/X36 throttle/joystick combo works too! That's a first for one of my Android devices too. Now I need something fun to test it with

I'm using an IrigUA without any problem so far...

Has anyone gotten USB sound cards to work *for recording*.
Like I have a Terratec Aureon USB MkII and would like to livestream my DJ sets to Facebook via the FB app, by hooking up the line-out on my decks to the line-in on a soundcard hooked up to my phone and have the streamed video use the soundcard instead of the internal mic which sounds rubbish.
Edit: Tried it, and yes it works, but you have to hook up to the mic port, not the line in, and this doesn't seem like a great idea. Any idea how to change it?

That would be so cool if you can get it working. Wonder if it's the phone or the Terratec? I have NO experience in that area. Good luck! How much power does it draw? Would a powered USB hub in the mix help?

What I really need is a super cheap low power USB line-in of some sort. Though after further testing, FB live streaming is crap, with low quality audio and video in all the configurations I tried (Android app, Win10+Firefox, Win10 app) so I'm probably going to abandon this plan and try a different platform like Youtube or something.

Just cant get otg to work in my device, I am on OOS 4.7.5, rooted with SuperSu, tried a type c to micro USB adapter, also a type c to USB 3.0 adapter, I have enabled the otg option in advanced settings before plugging in the devices, I don't know whether its the phone or the adapter I use, what kind of adapter did you buy, is it a type c 3.1 to micro USB 2.0/ USB 3.0, could you provide me with a name of the adapter.

I have the following USB OTG adapters.
2 X micro USB to full sized USB (the long type with a two inch cable).
1 X mini micro USB adapter that is tiny.
1 X micro USB adapter (bigger than above)
1 X USB C OTG adapter with micro SD card reader built in.
All of the above work. In the case of the micro USB OTG adapters, I'm using a USB C to Micro USB adapter (they're tiny, about 2 CM long).
In short, every USB OTG adapter I've put in it works. All are unbranded, generic adapters that I've bought from Amazon or eBay. I've never had to do anything more than enable OTG in settings.
Could it be something to do with the ROM you're using?
In the attached photo, the ones with a yellow Mark are micro USB OTG adapters. The one with a red mark is a USB C multi card reader (built in USB OTG). The one with a blue mark is a USB C to Micro USB adapter.

Sadly what you're doing is way beyond anything I've tried. I'm happy when I can get card readers and stuff to work
I vaguely recall reading about specifications for the older micro USB ports on phones and what type of power output they supported - not all were equal. For example, there were a bunch of Samsung phones and tablets that could power hard drives without needing a powered USB hub inline. Similarly, some could power an MHL connection to a TV without the adapter being plugged into a charger like most phones that supported MHL had to. I've forgotten the name for these specs, but presumably USB C is exactly the same and it'll be online somewhere. No idea what your Terratec draws or if that could be the problem - if our phones can spin a 1 TB hard drive then perhaps it's not an issue, I was just clutching at straws.

I am on official OOS 4.7.5 rooted with supersu, on which rom are you, is it 4.7.4, are you rooted, are you using any custom kernel.

4.7.4 Stock. Stock recovery too (not rooted either).
USB OTG worked on stock 4.7.2 as well.

Working fine for me, stock, custom roms etc. Use a cableconnection usb/otg cable 6" in length. Just enable OTG in the swipe down, plus USB stick in...no problems.

I gave up on using the phone for this because the audio quality via the FB app is terrible anyway, so I nicked my GF's Windows laptop and started using OBS for streaming instead.
Power aside, it's awesome that an external sound card will work (kinda) for recording though!.

On which ROM version are you on, is OOS 4.7.5 or another version of OOS or some other ROMs.
