Broken Hero Internally - Hero CDMA General

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was at the gym working out and listening to music on my hero. A 45lb weight dropped and rolled right on the hero. I tried to turn it on the screen was a little cracked internally but can still see 85% of it.
The Problem:
When I turn it on it just sits at the first HTC screen, vibrates once and won't boot.
Ive tried soft and hard reset but nothing. The buttons/trackball does not light up.
Ive plugged it in to my computer and removable disc(f drive) recognizes something is plugged in. But when I click on it it says Please insert a disc into the f drive. The orange charge light on the hero does not light up either.
Im pretty sure the phone is done but if anyone has any suggestions let me know. Its about to go under the knife to see if I can see anything messed up internally.
thanks
nick

Haha.........

If you have insurance take it in, otherwise it's time for scalpel and tweezers....

ouch.
There is very little real estate between the screen and the main board, so...i hope you dont have any damaged ICs.
Hopefully you will see something obvious once dissected.
Thats a bummer, man. At least its easy to take apart!

i wouldn't attempt to take it apart, just put it stock and request a refurbishment because that's what your gonna get and will probably have to pay the $100 to boot.

Day 1 in the OR....
Didn't see much, very little damage to the circuit board almost cant tell, but that little bit goes a long way. Went through poking everything like a dentist looking for a cavity. There was a loose solder, so keeping my fingers crossed.
After I put together, the LED indicator now lights up when its plugged in. Im going to let it sit to see if it gets to green.
Will update.
Thanks guys,
Btw: im using a blackberry as a backup, first non htc phone in the last 3 years. This thing kinda sucks

after 5 hours into the operation. The hero is alive up and running after a hard reset, soldering, and moving some of its "guts" around.
I just ordered a screen and it will be up and running in now time.

Well, mine has survived a plunge into a coffee cup with nothing but a tiny brown stain in the top-left corner of the screen.

If you have need of a replacement, I just bought a droid.
The only things I really miss are the trackball and the Sense clock.

man pics would have been awesome...

Ah, man! Thanks for the great laugh! That's so awesome you took your phone apart and fixed it right up. Great work!

He may find out after ordering the screen that it may have been cheaper to cough up the $100 for a replacement. Had that issue on a laptop once...the screen costs more than the entire computer. Wasn't worth fixing.

Mine survived a four-foot drop directly onto a concrete driveway...face down. Chipped the glass a little (about the size of a needle tip), but otherwise the phone works fine.
Didn't even bounce. I'm lucky the screen didn't break.

$30 for a new screen isn't bad. Ive replaced many screens, 2 kaisers, a wizard, and an Excalibur(Not all mine), Whats this $100 for a replacement people keep mentioning?

If you have to get a new phone and it wasn't due to a manufacturing defect then there is a $100 deductible to get it replaced (if you have insurance on it...if not, you're SOL).
$30 for a screen? I thought it would be much higher.

Be careful, I had my HD in my left pocket. I took the bus into town, the busdriver started to drive before I was seated and I bumped into the edge of a seat. My HD now looks like this
Does anyone know if there are spare parts availiable?
Flippin' heck, that doesn't look good I feel for you.
A warning to everyone, put the phone in your pocket screen side towards your body for maximum cushioning!
wiew that looks really bad! i'm afraid there no spare parts yet. Be patient, there will be after a while when more of these broken HD's will appear...

There is also another reason for this. Because antenna is usually at back side, it's also bit more healthy. Especially if you keep phone in your trousers next to your "jewellery" ))

The hit was not bad at all, in fact I didn't notice the phone was broken until I was about to use it.
And yes, everything seems to work alright.

I will buy it as it is.. if you want to sell the broken HD
asoebye, sorry to see this. We're all assuming you had the screen side away from your body in the pocket, can you confirm ??
As I suppose if an impact was large enough, even if you have the screen side in, a crack is possible.
Always put your HD in nice leather case
OMG! This sight will give me nightmares!
sorry to see this
I feel with you!
But it seems the screen is of glass. I thougth it was plastic.
when did you buy the phone? if it was less than 45 days ago you should be able to take out insurance...
omg, i`m sorry man. it looks bad. hope you can fix it.
wouldn`t this happen with a leather case? i mean leather is flexible...

Yes, I can confirm that. The thougt of such an accident has never entered my mind. I have never destroyed ANY phone. I got a scratch in my P3600 because I dropped it, and thats what I was most affraid of with my HD also.
But if you have the screen against your thigh I think you need a quite a hit to destroy the glass. The backcover will probably break first.
I think I will have that in mind from now on ...

I'm going to get CPP Fonesafe, but this is only available in Italy. There is also an UK version with the same name, but it costs 7 pounds a month, so it's not what I call cheap.

Droped my HD down the bog...but...

...it's still working!
I think it's the luckiest HD in the world.
It was in it's stock pouch and was scooped out within seconds. The battery quickly taken off and with the back off, card out, etc put straight into the airing cupboard (the little cupboard where the hot water tank is). This all happened at about 8am this morning. Got a call from the girlfriend at about 4pm this afternoon telling me she'd put it back together and it was cool. Wasn't too happy she'd done that, was gonna give it at least 48 hours but it's working. Seems to have dried out perfectly. Nothing under the screen, everything work fine.
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!
I think it was the pouch that saved it, probably soaked up the water before it got to the device.
Thanks for sharing this. I use mine every morning in there too but it's not happened to me yet. I will be extra careful from now on maybe take the pouch with me

Take care a close friend of mine dropped the EEPC in the toilet. He was smoking, some ash fall down on the legs, he opened them to avoid burn and the little toy from asus made a dive. All this happened before flushing the toilet, so before he got it to the service center he had also to clean it and parfume it.
A way to avoid this happening would be not to play with "toys" in the bathroom!!
From the last few posts i can say : none of the WM devices stink, even those which have been in toilet!!!!!!!
and gues im not looking for a new pouch -- keeping the original one!!!!
Boy oh boy that is damn funny, my old man did it many yrs ago when the first StarTac came out.
He came around the hallway swearing, googley eyed looking left and right and stated, "that was the most expensive s..t I ever had!"
He had stood up and flushed and at the exact same time the phone had popped off his belt and disappeared.
Incidentally he did get it back, it stuck to tree roots further down the drain, mind you it never worked again. heh heh.

I just placed my order for the Evo and should be receiving it sometime this week.
I am wondering if maybe keeping the phone in a tight-fitting silicone case might help to reduce any possible "DISPLACEMENT" of the screen

If HTC continues to mass produce phones that fall apart because of faulty manufacturing...then the customers just might revolt
Dang it!!! mine starting to raise up as well I love this phone and Sprint service but I'm afraid the problem will worsen up as the time passes. I'm not the type to switch devices after every new released and perfer to hang to something until I feel it's not doing what I ask it to (still have HTC Uni, 8525, Treo 750 and Axim x51v).
This and the 30 fps capped is my only main concern about this phone, especially this screen separation (more light leakage or dust problem). The rest of the problem doesn't really bother me much such as the laggy touch input, improperly grounded screen and other problem doesn't apply to my device.
Is it worth the hassel of exchanging it hoping to get one without the screen separation or do they all have this problem? I'm hoping the newer hardware version (version 3) doesn't have this sort of problem, mine is hardware version 2. What you guys think?
I have been noticing more and more light leaking. I thought at first I was maybe just getting paranoid (still possible) but I saw a line about 1.5 cm long along the lower left side last night... That was definitely not there before.
What should I do? Would getting the TEP plan be prudent at this point, to cover this issue if/when it gets worse? Or would be the kind of thing HTC would be more... lenient about replacements?
Think the hairdryer method will work like it did on the Nexus? My nexus had this issue and the hairdryer method fixed it up permanently.

Yeah I actually just tried this and it worked pretty well only a little of leakage left, I figure I'll seal it up some more when I have the time and Im pretty sure I did not hold it down long enough to let it cool effectively. but the parts that are still down work like a charm. way better than having to go back, lose all your apps, headaches of customer service, etc.

So this is the reason I see light under the buttons when their off and the screen is off, and its dark in the room? because my screen seems to be holding up well, and I have it in my pocket all day, no case or screen protectors. then again, I haven't been messing with it, trying to apply things or mods to it.
Hair dryer, bubble gum, tape and what else?! These are high-end devices (Evo Nexus One, etc) and they should NOT need a MacGyver handbook to keep them together after days of ownership. HTC needs to do right by us from the design stage period!
Dear Babies,
This is a site about hacking phones. Stop *****ing and use your brains for a change. Get some black silicon caulk from Lowes. Rub a small small amount in the crack where the buttons meet the case where the light leaks. Congratulations, your phone can now be left in the desert for 10 years and nothing will get through that seam including light... I swear, you guys can spend all day rooting phones but cant use some damn common sense to fix the hardware itself. I had tons of light leakage when i got the phone. Zero now, and you cant tell i did anything to it.

Easy! This phone might not be dead (only in comma).
This same thing happened to my wife last week with an Omnia2 and it looked dead, but she proptly removed the battery and after drying it... It's alive and well again.
Just pray... and wait
You may want to wait a full day before you turn it on again. Please let us know
let it dry thoroughly
and you may want to try another battery
10 years ago i dropped a motorola startac in the loo as I was cleaning it
it still works on the charger!!!
just be patient and let it dry well (two days)
oh man that sucks, update us if it's still alive..
Went fishing last week and after a full day on the boat I realized my dad had put my bag (with ipod) in the live well instead of the dry area. The thing was DEAD for about 3 days and sitting in the rice jar for 48 hrs AMAZINGLY brought it back to life.
Ow and since I´m in Brazil an iPod here costs ARM+LEG so I´m a very happy camper now.
Wait and be happy!
Latest news after a few days drying.
Turns on but screen is grey. It used to show very faint lines. Like the screen matrix lines.
Now it turns on and screen is just grey.
Occasionally get flashes of the Samsung splash screen and I did try the 3 button recovery mode and once I saw a flash of green and the little robot.
Maybe all is not lost. Its back in the rice at the moment! Not sure what we are having with our sweet n sour tomorrow night though!

I keep the hope but have always fancied a play with a Palm WebOS.
Still I am missing the Galaxy S. I want it back! Live damn you live!!!
You never know, my son poured a glass of sticky fruit juice on my laptop. Came out of every hole. Turned it off quick. Stripped it down as much as possible, got to unlock all the ribbon connectors, water sits right in there. Soaked it in Isopropyl alcohol. Binds to the water and draws it out. Let it dry for a few days and it fired right up. Also had to strip my SGS, screen was messing about, found the main screen connector hanging off. Anyway comes apart quite easily, just a few small screws and some gently pulling on the bezel edge.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, my heart sank. Hope it works but if not its definitely worth the Money to fix it
Put it on a hot place(not to hot)
That help it to dry.
You can also use a hairdryer over the backside. Do it gently and don't make the phone to hot.
When foe put it in the rise jar again for a day or two.

Well guys it is at a Samsung service centre being looked at.
They give cause for hope and think up to £60 to fix it.
Should know if it is viable to fix by tomorrow afternoon.
Keep your fingers crossed!
Good luck with the repairs. Hopefully you get it working 100% without costing you too much.
One warning I have for people with regards to the alcohol bath. I spilled beer all over my old BlackBerry Storm and after I dried it out the buttons were all sticking but at least the phone worked. People kept suggesting to bath the phone in 99% alcohol. I decided to try it. Well it definitely cleaned out all the sticky beer but it also leeched in between the layers of the touchscreen and left some permanent clouds and wet spots under the screen. The phone worked fine but the display looked a bit messed up. I'm not sure if the Galaxy S could suffer from the same effects but I thought I would share this experience in case someone is thinking about trying it.

N4 - Sliding Off Surfaces Falling Onto Floor

Ok guys - weird happenings, i use a usb cable from my desktop pc to charge my N4 at times. I had been sitting it on top of the pc tower & it has fallen onto the laminate floor 3 times and came out without injury. So i thought it was vibration from my pc tower, so i have been sitting the phone on my pc desk surface, today i found the phone hanging half way across the edge of the desk. There is no serious vibration to mention from my pc or desk, the phone has not been ringing for the phone vibrate to cause it either. So does anyone else have any paranormal activity with their N4 strangely falling off surfaces??
only thing i notice is the glass bottom surface is very slidey
This has been a problem since day one. Put a rear screen protector on. That'll fix you up.
this is the reason I bought a bumper when I ordered mine
Yeah, that's not paranormal I'm afraid, the back is very slippery, the device can and does slide even with no vibrations at all. Just make sure to place something in the surroundings of the phone when you leave it charging that can block random slides.
cheers guys, this is surely a bad design, im so lucky no serious damage occurred. Ill buy and try the rear screen protector as im not a fan of phone covers etc, Fingers crossed this does the trick. Many thanks guys for the feedback :good::good: :laugh:

Try using your charger and maybe put it someplace where the cable will not pull it. This is not rocket science.

I never said i was charging it on top of the pc tower, i sat it there. When its charging its on a flat desk surface as is the charge cable. I have sat the phone on my desk and sat it on top of my wallet and it falls off. So with this phone i will need to be careful how i place it. Of course its a bad design, i should be able to sit my phone flat on a flat surface and not worry about it falling onto the floor. Nexus aint gonna give me a new one if it were to get broken and no warning came with the phone.

This has been a problem since day one. Put a rear screen protector on. That'll fix you up.

Search for Zagg. Also do not search for screen protector. Try searching "skin" or back protector.

my n4 has the same problem, its constantly trying to cut its life early. ive considered taking it in for therapy, but i havent found a doctor that specializes in nexuscide. yesterday morning, i woke up to it dangling by a chord besides me, about an inch above my hard ceramic tile floor

close call mate, i can vouch that it is well made after 3 falls and coming out unscaved.
my daughter found mine yesterday half hanging off the edge of my desk :silly:

my n4 has probably fallen/jumped at least 50 times over the past 5 weeks, and its still in perfect condition(no cases or screen guards). luckily, the far majority of falls have been on a carpet, but some have been pretty scary
I can also say that I find mine sliding. It's quite weird actually, from the tests I've done I've noticed that it usually occurs when I have it on my leather couch or my ottoman. Yes, I know it's not a desk but the phone is sitting there rather level. It has also done it on my home desk as well, but not at my work desk (yes, both desks are level). It kind of reminds me of an air hockey table type situation. If you have it on your desk and push it, it doesn't require as much work as lets say an SGS3, Galaxy Nexus, or Blackberry to move. Basically the way it's designed causes it to not create much friction between it and the surface it is on.
Although, none of this bothers me since the phone is a fricken beaut.

man this means no where can be trusted to sit your phone. what puzzles me is it always slides off to danger, not further onto my desk .

everyone is MAKING FUN OF YOU
do you not see that?
wow.
if you have something on top of a flat surface...unless there is something acting upon it...there is no way for it to "slide off" ... how can you perceive that even possible?

im not making fun of him. and there is something acting on it, its called gravity. it does mean that the surfaces arent perfectly flat, but even the slightest non perceivable slant cause it to slide.

Better get a thicker skin quicker as you're dealing with a lot of teenagers in these forums. Its like playing WoW, way too many prepubescent teens.
guys, it's not the phone. It's the surfaces you're placing it on. Most tables/desks are nice, smooth and shiny. Combine that with the glass and a NOT SO PERFECTLY FLAT SURFACE and you get falls
Trust me...it's not voodoo or non-Newtonian physics
Just get any cheap gel case and you're set. I actually got a brilliant one for 2 GBP Really nice looking and with really really grippy sides.
Thread clean. It's really not nice to make fun from someone, especially here - on a biggest tech forum in the world
