Well at least we got a leak.....
What the hell are you talking about man!?!?!
We are getting it on the 10th!
And the 13th! and again on the 29th!
And then they are putting out a 2.2 Hero update in memory of that Baby seal Austin kicked and killed
Don't be mad! there are less than 48 hours till Eeyore's birthday! No one can be mad at a time like this!
Look, they just decided to wait till 3.0 gets released, it'll much better.....
Thats for 2.0. We're waiting on 2.1.
oh man, another one of these threads lol.can't wait to see where this one goes
who gives a rats ass about 2.1 anyways. im still rocking a super fast 1.5 setup!
Ok....So looking at that it says Android 2.0...
Last I heard we were getting 2.1......
Enough of this thread...
Why make another thread

The larger point, to me, is this: we can never, ever, count on Sprint for our upgrades. They will always be 6 months behind a remotely tolerable upgrade schedule.
I'm not at all saying "don't buy Sprint", I'm very happy with them. I'm just saying "the community is what matters". Your upgrades come from XDA.

you mean leaks come from xda. myself id rather wait until the final comes out and the devs get their hands on it.
I know I will never run the OTA update, the only reason I'll care is if the devs can make a better rom out of it, but I doubt it will make too much of a difference. the 2.1's we got pretty much have everything working already.
It will not be an ota update. It will be an over the wire update from the "training" materials.
My hope is that when the official 2.1 comes out, some of these little quirks will be gone. For example, an overclocked rom with a working camera would be great.

Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone. I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

^ this and i am thinking that devs from other areas will step into heros now that they can pick them up much cheaper than before the evo was released. look at some of the older phones, they are still going strong in the dev department.
i am not worried even if i end up with 'just' darchdriod as my daily rom for the rest of my contract (another 6 months or so).

I'm not that sad... lol. I am, however, sweltering, tired, and need to turn my AC on. Darchdroid is the best OC rom out there, and RegawMOD is the best NON-OC rom out there, so I think we are pretty good in the dev side of things.

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

I don't know why the EVO still does not have full root that can support custom recovery without a computer and since it doesn't have full permissions you can't pull stock apk's and wifi tether does not work. So you can be happy that you have a fully customizable phone for now.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

Well Regaw should be back at it soon and with you here it should all be ok anyways.
I say we wont see it till July or August. Also n1 will get it last....
Just my thoughts. I figured we'd still all be waiting at this time.
Although I'm happy with the leaked as its good. I'm starting to want the final release ....
Well I bet I'm right. Atleast no June release IMO ....
Flame all ya want. Its my turn for my opinion. Lets see who's right. I say end of July..... and the Evo and incredible will get it first. Official that is.

You're insane. The N1 is the only phone to date that Google has proven actually be WORKING on 2.2 for. How could we POSSIBLY get it last?
I don't mind the wait. CM is still pumping out good stuff for me to play with and i tried the Froyo test release and it was pretty nice as well, though it felt very generic and not really Nexus One tailored. Hopefully the final build introduces some new features and stuff that's specific to the N1.
Since 2.2 includes JIT (really big change), there are likely lots of little wrinkles that need to be ironed out.

What the hell is taking so long? Just saying my opinion and how I don't see us having the official by June. And I wouldn't be surprised if htc are already working on the Evo and incredible.
I think its bull honkey. Imagine if there were no leak. Everyone would be pissed.
The unofficial is pretty stable. I don't see another 3 weeks to fix minor things when cooks here do It in a week with more bugs. Hell 2.1 was buggier than this and they had a update fast for it....
Just getting the feeling things will slow
We don't need another new speculation thread. Please help keep the forum clean and continue discussion on an existing thread.
Getting kinda hard to believe that they were this close to releasing the consumer version of 2.2- and still no dice. With this kind of delay I really hope they have added a few surprises. With that being said, my only change would be to allow custom colors of the notification bar (hint, black) and custom color track ball colors. With these improvements I would have no reason to root....
Peace.
I changed maybe a dozen lines in my build.prop and this thing might as well be final. My phone is faster, more stable, and has more features than with the "current" official build. I'm content to sit tight and recommend you do the same

Where did you read from a Official Google Press release that one was close?
Google has stated that hey are working quite hard on Froyo, and making sure all the kinks are ironed out before the official release. I read this in my news reader, and therefore do not feel like going back to grab it. Rest assured, they are actually trying.
Edit: Never mind, found it:

I cant believe how so many people are impatient for 2.2. It's not owed to you. It releases whenever it releases. If it does not, oh well, you still have a great phone. Getting a free 2.2 upgrade is just an added bonus on top of what you have.
For build.prop need root right? Debating going back after my swap put me on 2.1 again
The FRF50 build that was leak was barely put together.
In three weeks they have moved 19 new builds. FRF69 is the latest.
They were never "close to release".
In my opinion Google has LIFETIME immunity from complaints for being such a generous company and making Google Maps Navigation free...

I'd expect this kind of attitude from an iPhone user and not some one in the Android camp.
The Android platform is still young and needs to evolve a lot more, especially in UI refinement to become a mainstay mobile platform. Updating Android to 2.2 is not an 'added bonus', it's a necessary incremental evolution if Google is to compete with Apple, Palm/HP and RIM.

Yeah... answer to this question please.
Courtesy and respect go a long way. One other thing. Nothing you get from google is free. It charges for its services and the products you buy have those costs built in. Maps is not free, nav is not free, you pay for it every day every time you buy a product. There is no free cup of coffee. Ever. Corporations are in it to make money and nothing else. Google is not your friend, nothing they output sees the light of day unless they believe the profit is there. They fully plan on getting their pound of flesh and we owe them nothing. Anyone who thinks otherwise has yet to attain their 14th birthday.

Then nandroid, and go back to 2.1. 2.2 is obviously not official yet. It will be released soon though, and I have a feeling it will include a lot of hidden features. Perhaps they sent the current 2.2 as a BETA for people like us to test. We say "I like it, but I want ____ feature" and maybe they will add it in the official release. Who knows.
But don't complain about it.

I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3. Samsung will probably release 2.2 somewhere between 2-4 months behind the competition. That doesn't give me great hope that we'll ever seen 2.3. Figure that it took HTC/Motorola 2-3 months to turn 2.2 final into 2.2 custom versions to OTA, then we are looking at 4-7 months from now for 2.3 if all of the same timeframes hold. That's probably past the window that this phone will receive official updates.
well seems like the ported versions of the firmware updates have problems, like the headphone jack not working. or gps lagging ect. (not to say the developers didnt do a good job{ cuz they did an awesome job}) but i use that stuff lots. i agree with lex tho. i think that we will probly stop geting updates after awhile so that the newer more awesome phones can get bought up.

2.3 won't be that different
2.3 won't be that different It will change the resolution mainly to allow a bigger screen Right now 2.2 really can only function on a 7 inch screen without some mods so 2.3 will have that integrated. 3.0 will have real differences, but Vibrant has become the developers phone of choice so, you will see that on the phone as soon as it gets out.

it is no more official than any of the others that are out.
I doubt it will take that long. Look, the Galaxy S took a while because these are the first phones using the Hummingbird CPU. People say HTC and Motorola are more on the ball, but they're using the same Snapdragon and OMAP cores since the beginning. Heck, Froyo was originally built for the Snapdragon--no wonder Froyo is easy to port to those phones.
Now they've got Froyo on the Hummingbird, I would think future releases will be easier to port based on the accumulated experience.

I don't ever expect to see 2.3 from Sammy. We'll honestly be lucky if we ever see an official & working 2.2.

No. Froyo was pushed to the nexus one in late june.
HTC/Motorola pushed it 2-3 months after that and samsung will wind up another 2-4 months after that, depending on when they finally push it.
2.3 will be pushed any day now to the nexus one, so you can do the math from there if you assume the same timeline. My guess its that pushes 2.3 out of the window for the upgrade.
Guys.. Froyo should be out before Christmas. Team Whiskey and Eugene already got it. And tmobile is sending OTA to people with JI6 to downgrade back to JFD. They're preparing peoples phones.
Okay, we have froyo, now we are set... OH WAIT GINGERBREAD IS COMING OUT I AM NEVER HAPPY OTHER PHONES WILL HAVE IT BEFORE ME CRY CRY CRY CRY.
Seriously, I can assure you gingerbread is not going to come out this year.
And the N1 is the dev phone so of course it's going to be first to snatch up the latests firmware.
Heck, samsung or tmobile DIDNT PROMISE YOU ANY UPDATES. You bought the phone and that is it. They have your money, what are you going to do know? Didn't you check on the behold? I think they are stuck on 1.6 same as the Cliq. BE HPPY you got froyo.
I don't care what anyone else says, I happy with my froyo.

actually when i bought the phone i got ****in played man. haha the people at the t-mo store told me i would get all the updates as soon as they came out, and that i would get 4 g on my vibrant. thats when i didnt know much about the phone, or phones at all. but now that im doing my research, im finding out that none of that stuff is true! im liking t-mo. but dont like how they lied to me to buy the vibrant. i was even looking right at the g2. like 'what about this one?' 'na man! you want the vibrant' i love my vibrant. but i also am gonna want 4g and firmware updates in the future.
Just looking at Dailymobile.se and came across:

Seems that the we N1 owners really are having to wait

Well the iphone certainly didnt get it over the air either. Just root and install it already. There are plenty of fine versions to choose from with features the ota certainly will never have.
Pathetic

Check the dev section much? N1 has had Gingerbread roms for a while now.
And if you're talking about an OTA... I didn't realize the iPhone got an OTA?
Not going to happen...
I'm imagining (okay, praying) there was a 30-day exclusive on GB given to the Nexus S. Release date for NS was 12/16, so that'd delay the N1 OTA until about 1/16. So that's the end of this week...
great thread we've got here
yeah man... growing long bear waiting for GB...
I hope google takes it upon themselves one of these days to get the damn update process together and get official updates out to non vanilla phones at least a month or 2 after the update is available (stock phones should have had this from day one). I should be rooting my phone out of fun and not necessity to get the latest update (well this doesn't actually apply to me because I did do it out of fun with the old command prompt back in march, but to some folks it's necessity or not even an option at all).
what a useless thread.... iPhone's Gingerbread is a mod, just like the ones for the N1.... geeeeeeezzz
Lemme know when Apple sends out an OTA update of Google Gingerbread to all iPhone users.

This is ridiculous.
And I don't even know why you're all still waiting for the damned official release.
Who gives a f****? Root, flash amon_ra 2.2.1, flash CyanogenMod 7 nightly et voilĂ .
I think either these people are trolls or insane 10 year old brats.
We've all been running Gingerbread for quite some time now, and they still feel the need to complain when there is a hacked port to the iPhone?
There are a few trolls around here lately...easy to ID by their posts!
