With all the features missing from Eclair and all the features added by sense I can see why this is taking so long. They had to intergrte many features of 1.6 into 2.1 for us and lay a new version of Sense over it. This seems like a very special build of 2.1. I don't even know if I would officially call it true 2.1 because many of the features are missing/changed from vanilla 2.1 on the N1. This is a hybrid of 1.6, maybe 2.0.1, and 2.1. They(HTC) really did go out of their way to provide us with this build of mish-mash. I am in no way complaining Just wanted to get some feed back as to what others are thinking that have used other releases of Android. I do enjoy what is out now and hope that with the official release canidate some things are improved. I am excited to be working on getting some things together that we are missing from "2.1" that we all want (voice-to-text, live wallpapers, 3D gallery, etc.). Although it does suck that it took HTC soooo long to get this ready and hit the 2.0/2.1 speed bump that was a huge culprit I am glad they took the time. So to that we salute you Mr. takingwaytolongtoreleaseanupdatebutfinallycameoutwithareallystripeddownversionjusttomakeushappycompany!
Well, I've not used other Android versions, but I concur completely that this couldn't have been a simple project for HTC. In fact, that's exactly what I've been saying to all the whiners over on the Verizon Android forum. So I've been on Verizon and HTC's side all this time, but man...could they drag this out any longer????????? Now, you guys had to go and give me a taste for blood by hooking us up with 2.1. Now ya done it!
But you know, I've been in the customer service industry for a really long time (shop foreman at a new car dealership), and I understand very well that some things take longer than you thought they would. But it's amazing how much you can pacify a customer just by making them at least feel like they're "in the loop". Verizon however has stood mum all this time, letting everybody's frustration come to a boil. Throw us a bone for cryin' out loud!
I'm not sure I agree with you though about them skimping out on this build version. Asking the poor little Eris to work like a Nexus 1 with it's relatively adolesent processor and half the internal memory might be setting your expectations a little high. But that's just my opinion, and it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

Ok so now that I've gotten your attention with the o' so "loud and in your face" title of this post, on to the main point. I'm REALLY dissapointed that samsung hasn't stepped up to the plate and included flash with the latest update, leaked or not, 2.1 or not. I'm tired of having to use that piece o' crap skyfire broweser that only works half the time on certain sites, and that's if I lucky. It seems to me that this phone may be destined for the veritable technological garbage dump that so many other phones have been. Samsung has yet to deliver on ANY of the promised fixes, including froyo, although maybe this leaked version of the update isn't the final one, and I'm starting to doubt if we'll EVER see froyo. Is anyone else as pissed off as me? All I know is I'm gonna boot my vibrant for a n1 if something doesn't happen soon. Sorry to any mods or users for the incoherent rant and/or cursing in the aforementioned post, I'm just venting.

They just launched the Fascinate, and now they have their phone on all carriers. Sure, it would have been great to have Froyo by now, or launch the Fascinate with Froyo, but I don't think they'd want to fragment their US Galaxy S so much. I'm sure it will come, especially now that all the phones are out. I have a feeling they are going to develop Froyo for all the Galaxy's at the same time. Whether the carriers decide to push out Froyo as soon as it's ready is another question.

I suppose ur right, and releasing froyo for all the galaxy s phones at the same time would make sense. Now I suppose the real question is, which is closer, cyanogenmod or an official froyo update from sammy?
Seriously I can understand peoples frustrations but venting on the forum isn't going to change a thing. The OTA for Froyo is speculated to be released in September and its still September isn't it? On that note it's only speculated not confirmed. People are in fact working on getting 2.2 to our phones not just Samsung, all I can say is be patient. If you don't want to be patient then shut up and get a G2 when its released if we don't have Froyo by then.

i couldn't imagine frequenting enough flash sites on my laptop/desktop to make me want flash this badly on my mobile device...
Well I kinda understand the frustration in the OP as flash support means a lot more on the web. I miss watching news clips on CNN website and shows on Hulu on the gorgeous Vibrant screen. But I have no doubt about Samsung's commitment to Galaxy S especially after reading the results of leaked firmware. Instead of losing patience and shouting in forum I would wait for Sammy to roll out a stable Froyo update on this fantastic phone and then enjoy all the goodies. I am sure nobody still has question on whether Vibrant will get Froyo or not after seeing all those videos of european version running froyo. It may be September or October, but I can wait.

Not to be an ass but, why don't you use the advanced version so we can see the CPU gain and not just the lagfix gain. The lagfix makes some things faster and other things slower...the original lagfix that is. I haven't used the voodoo one, so I can't comment on it. I know there is a CPU gain on yours as the most I've seen just with lagfix is in the 2200's. So I assume you have a different rom and/or OC'ing.

Not necessarily. Your custom rom is on top, but a stock Galaxy S is still below a Nexus 1 running froyo. If we want to throw mods in the game, a custom N1 or Droid 2 may beat yours because they have froyo and you don't.

2. the galaxy s line does have hacked froyo on it, just look through the forums
3. idc about this comment
anyway, we'll get froyo soon enough, look at the evidence, it's been confirmed already, maybe not for a specific one in a specific country, but hey, once one country is out, others follow quick, besides, the galaxy tab, which is basically the same hardware as the galaxy s, runs froyo, it's probably the bug fixes thats taking them a while, be patient and you'll get it
edit: forgot to add, you can use skyfire, you got a galaxy s, skyfire will not lag at all, its a browser that has full flash capabilities, and actually the video button thing is better than having youtube playing a video straight out, at least you can control it that way, but yea, skyfire, look in tha market

We are talking about sprint and samsung here. Tha'ts like a double whammy!
If its not out by end of this month, my epic is going to be sold on craigslist, or ill ***** at sprint until they call the cops or switch the phone out. Samsung is really getting on my last nerve. I don't give a **** if its the fastest phone out if it doesn't have the os that is about to be old again in a month. Its like running windows xp on a bad ass computer when windows 7 is out, but you can't get the update, no direct x 10 for you.

lol ive been through this before with sprint..took forever to release the 2.1 update for the hero..by the time the epic gets froyo the next version will probably be out..that really sucks to have such a high end device and always be one and two steps behind the lead os version
IN general no matter what OEM, it will take forever to get the update. Kind of the crappy thing about Android phones with so many consecutive releases. Google said they would slow down after this next release....

They better, this is getting out of hand.
I just wish Sprint/Verizon/etc all just used a standardized Android, that way Google could roll out updates like any other Linux distribution. But NO, that'd be WAY too easy, it'd put tons of programmers out of a job because of how simple it would be.
Its all google fault for being too fast trying to achieve the best OS in the world.
Shame on you google!!

Honestly i dont really care, it will come when it comes. I mean all froyo is giving us is apps2sd and flash and i hardly use my phone for flash and apps2sd will be nice but not like im running out of room.

Sent from my bathroom, with toilet paper.
I wouldn't expect it until December 1st at the earliest.
The November 11th is just the date it'll get released to carriers from Samsung.
Sprint still has to add their software, gimp it up, add a few bugs, and test it for weeks.
I like the Epic, but the 2.2 delay is a bit irritating.
Why is this so great?

Reasons:
1. Android Market Applications - As applications begin to adopt 2.2-only features, and Devs don't support 2.1, applications won't show up on Epics anymore. The reason Android fragmentation is dreaded.
2. Apps2SD - The Epic only has 512Mb of app storage. My phone is getting full....
3. ROM ports - Most ROMs are developed on 2.2 in other platforms. With a 2.2-supported kernel, ROM ports from other phones will be easier to create (as well as CM ROM, since CM is 2.2).
4. Adobe Flash support.
5. YouTube HD (2.2 only)
6. Dalvik JIT Compiler (speeds up applications _a lot_... this probably belongs at #1). We had 2.2 on the HTC Touch xv6900 since about June, huge performance boost.
So far this poll has a very small sample return. Nevertheless it is disconcerting to see that, as of this writing, well over 50 percent think Froyo will be deployed on the Epic in November.
This is amazing, since Samsung has only promised that Froyo would come to U.S. Galaxy S variants in general sometime before the end of the year, and Sprint has made no more optimistic a prediction.
If this poll shows anything, it is that many or most readers here are setting themselves up for a bitter disappointment. Expect a lot of rants around Nov. 30, when we probably will still be waiting.
We will get it when other phones start getting 2.3
Froyo's going to slow the browser down, just wait!
On the other hand, I am looking forward to some of the other features it brings... but it's really not going to make that much difference in the performance of the device. It'll get here eventually. Just because it's taking a while is not an excuse to sell your phone.
Meh. I can wait.

Omg who the hell is still excited about this ****. Gingerbread is going to he such w huge disappointment. All it is going to be is a bunch of bug fixes and very minor features.
true. i havent seen any evidence that this will be worth moving from a 2.2 rom at all. the stock launcher is still 100% balls, so no ones gonna use that over zeam, lp or adw. miui has (IMO) the best pull down menu, you can already get 'fancy' animations (bounce, flips etc etc) in roms.
what exactly will this add that's worth giving a crap about?
if it only came with an accelerated UI and nothing else, that would be huge, as huge as proper (i.e not the official) apps2sd.
so far it looks like it'll have new icons and that's about it. big whoop
At this point, I think Google should just bite the bullet and have a Gingerbread conference, telling us the features and say that it's going to be released some point in the future.
It's lost it's shine now, people are starting to move on from the hype because they are sick of waiting and now it can be nothing other than a disappointment.
As always, don't believe it until you got the OTA yourself. Just because some weirdo on Twitter or anybody else says so doesn't mean anything. And I totally agree with tommo123 and gibosn6594.
I really don't understand what some of you are complaining about. There's never been a Google update that wasn't an improvement over the previous one in terms of performance, features, etc.
If you would like a pretty interface, do it yourself; new icons...again, do it yourself. That's the beauty and point of a dev phone like the N1.
If you want to be told what your phone should look like and act like, join the Cupertino crowd. Nothing wrong with that.

If anything to learn here is those that are first to complain will be first to download and say " I told you this was going to be awesome."
I still think we won't see GB until a sale date for the Nexus S is announced. I have nothing to prove that but it appears to me, from the long wait, that Google is delaying for the S to be ready and then do a simultaneous launch.
I have to agree. I was a lot more excited about this update before I started seeing the leaked videos and screenshots. Granted the 'under-the-hood' changes could be great, but I was really hoping for drastic UI improvements and so far I'm not seeing any. Installing the new Google Reader app reminded me of just how bland the user interface of android apps can be.
Could still be surprised I guess, but overall this doesn't feel like as big an update as previous ones.
I'm also starting to get bored of my Nexus One and looking at what's next and I'm getting really tired of all the manufactures throwing their own skins over out-of-date android builds. Android needs an interface that is slick enough that OEMs are happy with it as is.

I'm definitely not moving over to Gingerbread until MIUI is updated to it. There honestly seems to be no reason to. It doesn't exactly seem all that interesting..
The fact that there will be no more banding in images is a delightful upgrade, but other than that, Gingerbread is a small graphical enhancement update not worth wasting time on. Maybe once more information is revealed I will reconsider~

Google did not post a complete changelog yet so noone really knows which new features will come with Gingerbread.
The only thing Google really announced is that there will be some minor cosmetic changes made to the UI, so I really don't understand why so many people are now, as there are only few pictures of Gingerbread leaked, crying about the 'only' minor changes that were made to the UI, although this is just what Google announced...
I myself think that there will be some surprises, I just can't believe that Google would made such a secret about Gingerbread if there were so small changes.
However Google's Android updates actually always were quite useful.
What I don't understand is why it is taking so long to release the update if the changes are alledgedy minor.

You should be excited! From 3.1 to 3.2 is not too much of a huge changelog. Main updates included the zoom feature, and the SD card read but not write. Now, from 3.2 to the alleged 4.0 ICS... that's another story! That's a HUGE update in terms of software development. So much will be added and improved... it's the real update to look forward to, especially since ICS will unite the phone and tablet into one super high quality OS that both will share and work together with. That makes compatibility issues much less complicated. All for one and one OS for all!
I for one, am super excited for ice cream!
i just hope it allows data sharing between the same directories. Like, if I play a game for a bit on my tablet, it updates my phone with my progress.

Android's strength was that of fragmentation - different phones coming in different sizes with different hardware.
However this is also Android's weakness as developers have to test on a larger number of devices (and we all know it's financially impossible to own all devices).
With ICS this should level the playing field with Apple - we should then see some new apps coming in for the tabs (and phones!).

however apple has introduced the software, the new videos and betas are everywhere but there is no sign of ice cream sandwich yet.. this is risky because since we have no referance point to set our dreams we can dream whatever we want and this leads us to dissappointment in the end because there is no way to guess what they are doing..
so, i guess i am ready for a dissappointment and being suprised at the same time.. i have high hopes for ICS but i am trying to accept my device with honeycomb already and telling myself i did not buy it for ICS..
really, i have been asking to myself; "what kind of software are we dreaming of"? there are android devices with 600 mhz qualcomm cpus and quadcore devices are on the way.. how can they share the same software? there is only one example for that in the history; apple again.. apple updated the iphone 3g last time but they did not put multitasking and menu background due to the performance limitations..
and the other question is; "what kind of changes are coming for us"? android users are more professionals generally, but still i want some UI improvements.. i do not like my app icons are forced to be close only in the middle of the screen.. i want a menu which gives me the impression of wideness, so i will not feel i am drowning in the screen..

I skimmed through the 51-min I/O presentation to glean the major upcoming features of Android. The big thing are cloud features (video & music everywhere) which are rolling out independent of the OS. Even for cloud fans, these aren't a big deal, since similar options are available elsewhere. Mentioned in passing was an app-abstraction layer so apps can run seamlessly on any form factor. A "mini-big" deal, but already assumed since ICS is supposed to unify different screen sizes.
The Open Accessory initiative could be a big deal, but again that's not tied to the OS. I looked up "android open accessory" for 3rd-party announcements, and there were zip. The safe bet is if anything were to happen on this front, it'll be next year. Hopefully, it'll fare better than the GoogleTV effort. Logitech is learning the hard way that not all is golden in Android land.
The pie-in-the-sky stuff shown is the @Home initiative (I'm wondering if they had to pay AT&T to license that moniker, since [email protected] was acquired by Ma Bell a while back). It's the old Internet-appliance spiel rehashed and reclothed to Android skin. Judging from the applause level, most peeps in the audience were about as excited as I was.
So, the conservative projection (always a good idea) is that ICS will be what it was announced to be, one OS for all form factors. As explicitly mentioned, it will have the same hologram motif as the present HC, only that now your smartphone can run it as well. Any additional functionality beyond this will likely be minor, else it would've been mentioned. If you're wondering what's "minor," take as a benchmark that cam headtracking made the fit-to-be-announced cut.
Personally, the magic words I was looking for were "peripheral support," or "device support." MIA. I know, kinda boring. I like boring stuff, like using my scanners and printers and cams.
Anyway, I'm happy that 3.2 is out and about at least. That'll allow the 7" toys to show up this year, which is my preferred size. Looking forward to Sept to see what Win8 will have up its sleeve.
Oops, I left out one big feature for ICS, probably the biggest: unlike HC, it will be open-sourced.
Now, I'm sure ROM'ers will all rejoice, and I'm rooting (get it?) on CM8. But my biggest cheers are reserved for those poor bereft Shenzhen souls left out in the cold. YES! THERE'LL BE CRAPPY EL-CHEAPOLA ICS TABLETS AT LAST! ahahaah lemme check DealExtreme again..
