Ringing volume - Legend General

I have the legend for almost 10th days now and i have to say I love the experience. I have 2 concerns though:
according to the review by gsmarena.com the phone should have an excellent ringing volume bit o don't really feel this way specially the speaker grill is at the bottom and most of the time it's muffled. is there a problem with the speaker or what?
also i noticed that most people are more interested in the nexus or the desire. I'm worried that the legend wouldn't get a fair share of updates or apps from HTC or other developers? will this be the case or what?
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

i find the ring volume fine at home when laying flat its still loud enough and in your pocket its definitely loud enough if your worried about volume you can always boost the audio track volume in an audio editor then put it on the phone.
the legend is still pretty popular, id assume when it comes to apps the only thing that needs to be supported is the screen resolution and while it is low compared to the others it is still a common android supported res so i dont think it will be a problem (i think apps auto scale ?)
also when it comes to the power of the legend vs say nexus one or desire there is no problem there the legend actually handles full 3d apps better than the nexus one and desire this is probably due to the larger screen resolution
in neocore 3d bench my legend got 31fps the nexus one in a video i watch only got 21-25fps so surprisingly the legend handles 3d better than the higher end models
id call the legend more of the top of the midrange its the mainstream device and from what i gather it is doing well as many people opt for it over the larger devices
ultimatly time will tell but yes id assume that the legend will be 100% supported from everyone
however i am waiting for an update or a way to enable live wallpapers but in the mean time im gonna go test quake on the legend

I find max ringing volume inadequate, for the 1st time ever I miss calls cause I don't hear the phone ringing. Boosting ringtones helps only a little, unfortunately.

HD still worth buying??

Hi all,
I have a chance of an 'as new' HD phone for around £250...is it still worth getting what with the HD2 just been released.
I'm currently using a SE Xperia, which I love but I have an addiction of getting other phones to try out.
Main things I'm concerned about that the Xperia lets me down on is the sound quality from the earpiece for ring tones and music playback...how good is it? Also is video playback smooth with videos encoded at high resolutions.
Any feedback would be appreciated on how good (or not) you find this phone overall and whether it still holds up against the latest batch of WM phones.
Cheers
HD is a good device, but if I had the option between the HD & HD2 I would go for the HD2 as it has a faster processor, flash for camera and capacitive screen. These are the only real differences apart from the size between the 2 devices which is why a number of people (myself included) don't feel any need to upgrade, but if your going to get one or the other, its a no brainer for me, HD2 all the way!!
Also, an existing thread already exists on this. NO need for duplication so I'm going to close this one.

Some noob questions

Sorry for that noob question but I just wanna know if I can use this phone in my country (turkey/bulgaria) if I purchase it. I am not sure since google says "Sorry, the Nexus One phne is not available in your country".
P.S: By the way, I wanna ask owners;
- I have a HTC Touch HD and I really dont like its touchscreen, you need to apply pressure to screen, instead of just touching. How it feels on nexus one?
- Sound output: Sound quality of HTC HD is not good (I have tried with many headphones), how is nexus's output quality?
Thanks.
I can't answer the first question, however I can say that the Nexus has a capacative touchscreen rather than resistive (so you don't need to press hard, or really, at all) and that the sound output sounds just the same as any MP3 player to me, though I suppose I don't have the finest hearing in the world
dunno about being able to use it over there...
but the screen is sensitive enough that ive never been frustrated with it by having to slam my fingers on it or anything... small, light, quick touches are all recognized on my phone...
as for the audio quality, on a 1-10 scale id give it about a 6 or 7... theres definite white noise produced by the device and the bass is mediocre... it gets the job done though, i use it as my primary media player on a daily basis without gripe... better than lugging a phone and ipod around everywhere

HTC touch HD uses a different touchscreen technology (resistive) than new phones (capacitive). The nexus ones screen sensitivity is the same as an iphone/ipod touch.
Well thanks for fast answers. I will give it a try.

Low ring volume?

Is it just me, or does the Nexus One seem to have a somewhat low ring volume?
When some one calls me, or I get a text message or new e-mail or any other notification of some sort I'm barley able to hear it when I'm at work?
Tried to crank the notification and ring volume to the maximum, but it's still way lower than what I'm used to with every other phone I've had before?
If I dare compare it to when I used my iPhone 3G at work, I had the volume set to about 70% and I was still able to hear it loud and clear every single time?

I have the complete opposite experience with my phone; I have to keep the volume at around 40% in order for it to be remotely acceptable volume in the workplace. At full volume every call and notification is so loud that I am almost embarrassed for drawing the attention of everyone remotely close to me.
The speaker is not of the highest quality, in my opinion, but it is damn loud.
I don't know of any secret options that affect ringtone volume, so I am curious to hear other people's testimonies to see if there is a widespread difference.
I agree with the opening post, my Nexus One is too damn quiet, I've missed loads of call and text message notifications. Mind you, I do tend to keep my phone in it's sleeve, so that is obviously a contributing factor, but even outside of the sleeve the speaker is really quiet.
I had a Nokia 5800 previously, which had exceptional speakers - loud and very good sound quality, so maybe it's just that I'm used to something a lot louder.
Although, my only other HTC experience was the Touch Pro (which I hated with an unholy passion), and the speakers on that were really crap too.
I also agree with OP. It is really low for me even at max volume i miss a lot of texts and some calls. I do keep the phone in my pants but with my previous phones was way louder.
It's lower volume than I was use to with other devices. Not sure if there is a way to pump it up some?
I've noticed that some of the ringtones are much more audible than others. Cricket, for example, "carries" pretty well, as a sound. I'm guessing you've tried them all though, if you're not happy with the volume.
FWIW, for various notifications, I have Cricket, Captain's Log and Pizzicato in use, all of which seemed fairly audible to me. For sure more so than the default one.
Going through them again now, I'm wondering if some of the other notifications haven't been made a bit louder/more shrill in today's update. Damn updates. Make me imagine all kinds of things have changed
My workplace is a lab, so it's pretty quiet. I might well have complaints about the volume if I worked in a noisier place. And I honestly don't receive a bunch of calls on it, just emails and SMS.
Rediculously Quiet
Well I’m a bit of a gadget nut, and own pretty much every top phone on the market. Huge fan of this phone but the ring volume is pretty much a killer. At maximum volume its way less than any phone I have at 50% volume. I miss calls all the time and therefore have dropped it as my goto phone. What purpose does a phone have if you can’t hear it ring. Seems crazy to me that all my other WM HTC phones are acceptable or crazy loud. Just to hear my phone in my pocket I have had to make a MP3 ring tone mixing it at max volume, that was my only solution but it’s still not loud enough and now the speaker begins to distort and crackle the sound, making me think there will be no soft fix for this.
Huge Disappointment

I highly doubt the Desire would fix any of these issues. It's the same phone essentially.
Uhh. I usually keep my Milestone at 1 notch from bottom and I can hear it clearly. Today I missed 3 calls on my N1 with it 1 notch from the bottom. I later realized I probably need it around 50-60% volume to hear it well for a near 100% catch rate. Forget noisy places like the subway. If I put my Milestone at 50-60%, it'll rock my office.
I've gone through an iPhone 3GS, Nokia N82, Moto Milestone, and the N1 ranks dead LAST in terms of ring volume. That speakerphone is just terrible. 40-50% on the N1 can't even compare to a Droid at like 20% or so.
The same goes with the Earpiece. I can make calls perfectly fine at 10-20% on my Milestone whereas I gotta crank up to 80% or so on my N1. Unacceptable.
Some people reported a significant raise in volume when using Desire ROM on N1 and if you look at the Desire pics you will notice that the speaker openings are larger than the 3mm one of N1

That would be good =) maybe I should ask some people about this more. The voice on the N1 also sounds very tiny through the earpiece (you know like when you turn your volume way too high on earbuds and the sound leaks out?). The Milestone seems more stereo and filling as if I'm in a room carrying out a normal conversation. I hope the Desire can address these issues.
See what I mean on the attached pics?
Also perhaps google asked HTC to do it quiet for safety reasons, the Legend which is the little brother of the Desire has a very loud volume...
I would think it has to be very high on the hardware development importance list to include a decent speaker especially with many using these phones in conference call situations these days. This volume on the Nexus phone seems crazy low and indeed we are throwing conspiracy theories out there but HTC are going to sell the Desire, the exact same machine (little less cool and with that weird touch nav) out onto the market right in Google's face for 200$ more! My bet is yes the hardware on this Desire is the grade 'A' stuff including the speaker.
Please let there be some kind of code fix for the Nexus 1,
Anyone had any experience with the Desire Rom on Nexus 1 regarding volume increase?
Someone on the Android Help forum said that the loudspeaker is programmed to output 75% of its maximum volume. Can someone verify that?

Just convert the ringtone file using any converter and maximize the volume in settings... I tried it once with TVC but the sound became distorted

I'm not sure where someone got that from.
I've been searching through the Nexus source and, as far as i can tell, the audio is all controlled via the kernel and nothing else, volume wise anyway. I'm not sure why Google changed HTCs method (which was easy as hell to hack) but they've definitely removed it.
how do we open the kernel to get to these sound files, if someone walks me through it, i will hack the files, i dont care about htc copyright, i want a phone i can hear ringing.
PM me if you want me to, and i wont upload any copyright stuff here, i will host the file somewhere else ehhhm rapid shares cough cough

I want help before buying HTC desire hd

I want to buy HTC desire HD but excuse me I want to ask 2 questions about it 1st
and I want your answers plz..
I heard that this device has poor speaker and also headphone quality and loudness compare to devices like Iphone 4G and HTC desire and samsung galaxy S and I want to know if this true or not ?
and I want to how long DHD battery last ?
hi.about the speaker it doesn't sound very loud.for the battery i think is the most weak point of the device.you can run out after 12h.anyway we know that is the disadvantage of smartphones with big screen.
the speaker max volume is a 1 notch less than the desire, but its still fine, the quality a bit better than the desire (cleaner) the supplied headphones are ok but the quality with other headphones is very good, you can boost it with SRS option which really gives a nice bass
as for the battery, being careful with your wifi connection, sync options and screen brightness the battery will last you 12-14 hours under heavy use and up to 1 and half day in light use
Ive not had issues with the speakers, little quite at some points but its a phone.
In terms of the battery it depends how much you use it. If you never touch it and leave everything off or leave the phone off I imagine it will last some time. If you never put it down, have everything syncing all the time, consistently playing games, i imagine very little.
thanks for your answers but is there any way like application or software update to make DHD speaker louder or this problem is hardware problem ??

There are some "solutions" available for that speaker issue but from wht I've read it's still kind of crappy
This seems to be a descent phone based on everybody's reaction and the fact that HTC has run out of them quite often.
I don't have any sound mods on my DHD, I use a decent pair of Sennheiser in ear buds and at full volume the sound is loud enough to make you want to turn it down. As for the speaker it's not loud, but it's not quiet. The quality is much better than other HTC phones I have owned(or any other phone for that matter) and I've had five or six.
I was planning to buy this phone but crappy sound, bad battery life, lcd instead of amoled, init process lag made me change my plans. I guess I'm gonna wait for LG star.

The sound is fine, there is no init lag once you activate USB debugging, and I think it's just an issue with stock ROMs.

the sound quality of the headphone output is good, but a little thin sounding.
the battery life is a mixed bag. the 3g uses a HUGE HUGE HUGE amount of power (my battery ran down to 50% after 3 hours in a poor 3g reception area)
now that i have switchpro i can turn 3g off and the battery is now at 79% after 13 hours, 21 minutes. that gives a predicted life of 52 hours. this was with half an hour of phone calls, 6 missed calls and 22 text messages.

lol, i have ultrasone HFI 780's, £170 headphones and a dedicated headphone amplifier costing £250.
all i was saying is that its not going to beat a dedicated MP3 player any time soon, but its not far off the iphone and itouch.
The speaker is ok but i dont go around playing music on loud speak, i have got Dr. Dre Beats Tour and with SRS option at full volume is just amazing and i use the Dolby option when watching avi movies.

Venue Pro on AT&T 32GB thoughts

I have had my 32GB Venue on AT&T now for a few days and I have some thoughts on it. First I want to say I have had no issues with lockups or freezing. Wifi is on 24/7 and I have downloaded some large games etc. I have a bit over 16GB of data on the phone. Zune syncing is just as fast as my old Focus. I have no issues related to the software on the phone. It is running nodo version 7355. I have not been prompted for an update beyond that level at all (it shipped with nodo).
I have a few issues with the hardware. First the camera button does not always turn on the phone. Sometimes it works but it is very hit or miss. It is also too flush to the phone and does not stick out far enough. That seems to be a theme with this phone. None of the buttons protrude enough from the device. The power button is the worst.
I ordered a case to help with this issue since it appears the otterbox has buttons that stick out.
Second, the camera does not shoot 720p worth anything indoors. The frame rate drops to almost laughable levels when even normal indoor lights are on in my office at work. My friend's Focus does not have any issues at all. 480p video works great and the camera seems to do OK in the same lighting.
Third, the speaker on the bottom of the phone is VERY tinny. It does not have ANY bass and makes the one on the iPhone 4 or the Samsung Focus sound amazing. Even the alerts and ringtones sound very "thin" and lack any bass.
I do love the keyboard and the space available on the phone. 32GB is going to be hard for me to fill quickly. The hardware keyboard makes typing longer emails and texts very easy. I love that the auto-correction still works with the hardware keyboard. It even makes the "change" sound when it corrects a word but it does not makes key typing sounds. Very nice since the volume controls on the phone are not granular enough.
Pleas let me know if you have any questions.
Josh

All good points. Gotta disagree about the speakers though, I think they sound pretty good, certainly better than my hd7.
I had an HTC surround and the speakers and sound quality is inferior. Even through headphones our aux to my car stereo

Agreed. I have a DVP and an HD7 side by side. DVP wins hands down. I also use a Jabra cruiser for my car and it transmits music with little loss of quality.
I wonder if my phone was saddled with a bad external speaker. The earpiece sounds great but the speaker used for notifications/ringtones etc. was very crappy and high pitched. Next to my Samsung Focus it was bad.
FYI: After a few more days with the phone I have not had a single lockup or stability issue.
As far as the camera starting up the phone, I believe there is a proximity sensor near where your ear would press against, and when it's covered, the camera button is ignored. Try holding the phone more like a camera and avoiding that area and see if you still have the issue.
I'm listening to a podcast through my dvp right now. I have to my volume at 30 (would play at 24-28) and have to have stereo 10-15 increments higher. Also miss my equalizer

my camera button wakes the phone no problem. to me it takes a long press, though.
I got my AT&T 32GB version in on Friday. I have cellular data disabled at this point but have been using a lot of wifi since then. No freezes for me yet and I have downloaded 15 or so apps/games. Also done quite a bit of web surfing and email over wifi. The Info app shows 480MB of ram btw.

Go to settings, swipe down to cellular, and tap on it. There you will find the settings to turn on and off cellular data.
One different I just noticed is that the dvp allows you to specifically just turn off 3g and use edge. This is a boon if you've ever been to a place where there are too many iPhones/smartphones present like a convention or sporting event and the 3g goes all to hell.
