Hi,
i just got the HTC legend last night and noticed that the colors are a little washed out at anything under 40% brightness, even the gray areas of the theme are brownish and at the lowest brightness level all the the dark coolers have a brown tint.
its only ok when its at 100% brightness .
is this normal or should i renter it ?

Same here. And I remember some reviewers also complained about yellow tint on low brightness levels. So it's probably the way this display is supposed to be, unfortunately.

thanks, i would like to hear from more users to verify this .
mine is the same as well but my screen is also showing pinkinsh grey hue on certain websites. If you browse to www.htc.com you'll see that the flash banner's background have a tint of pinkness. This is the htc desire issue as well in the topic below

Excuse me for my english, i'm italian.

at 100% brightness all grey looks grey " web pages, theme, etc" but as soon as i go ~40% the brown becomes noticeable everywhere, when i hit the lowest brightness things get really ugly .
on mine only the very lowest getting looks wrong however I also own a cowon s9 and that has an amoled screen to and on the lowest brightness colors go off on that to. id say its got something to Do with amoled screens as they have no blight so lowering the brightness feeds less power to the scrwen.
or least I think thats how they work
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
this I would assume has something to do with how an amoled screen works I own other amoled devices and they all exhibit similar behavior.
as far as I know amoled has no back lights so when the brightness is lowered the power provided to the screen is diminished causing it to incorrectly display certain colors

I set the brightness at the max but the web pages are still pink (htc.com).
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
the pink hue is caused because the screens that HTC use have the process aligned in a pen and tile config. there is an extensive article about this based on the nexus one.do a Google search

this is true, however if htc has used these types in those 2 others its a safe assumption they would use the same in the legend
having said that mine does not look pink at all so who knows
the pink is noticeable only on particular web pages and on the gmail application.
I would understand if that is a common situation or it is present only on difected phones.
Just don't go below 40% brightness. Problem solved.
By the way, the Legend has a normal RGB-subpixel layout, therefore it shouldn't have a pink hue.

So my excitement kinda came to an early end last night. I got my second replacement mt4g due to a bad screen. This one is perfect...except that when I was reading some text on a page with a white background, I noticed that from bottom to top, the white gradually goes from white to this yellowish tint. I will post a picture of it later on tonight.
My question is, do you have/had this problem and did you end up returning it or did it go away kind of like when this was happening to the iphone 4? I really hope this really doesn't become a full-blown issue like with the washed colors, because then I would have to request a 3rd replacement and make sure that it doesn't have dead pixels, dust under the screen, washed out colors, yellow tint, crooked ffc, creaky buttons, and gaps around the bezel. Thanks.
Here is an example of what i'm talking about except my display is white at the bottom and gradually goes to the color of the phone that is on the right, at the top.

Do you think that the problem is improper screen calibration and all I have to do is wait for a software update?
225 views and one reply?? Really guys?? Not trying to sound like I'm whining, but this is a serious problem and I think i'm not the only one. I just received my replacement, and it too has this yellowish tint towards the top of the screen. This will be my 4th time that I will be requesting a replacement, so in total so far, 4 defective phones.

I can't see anything wrong from that photo. It will take something more than this to let others know if you have a problem.

The blacks never looked grayish, the colors were bright, crisp and vibrant, it was when looking at something with a white background. This issue has nothing to do with the washed screens that people are getting.

I figured it out based on a chat I had with a friend. I think that the backlight was improperly calibrated or something. Sorry that I can't take a better picture as I have already received my exchange which is much much better, the light is just more distributed evenly then the previous phone. Plus it doesn't creak, the ffc is dead centered, and light doesn't leak through between the bezel and the screen at the top of the phone. After 4 exchanges(5 phones total), I finally got a "perfect" device.
Here is a side-by-side shot sort of(I returned the defective device before I could think of take a pic of them together due to my excitement!)
You can easily tell that the screen of the phone on the right has way more light at the bottom of it and the top doesn't which results in a more obvious yellowish tint. The phone on the left (good one) doesn't have it as bad, the light is distributed evenly. Both were on auto brightness. The good display's(right) brightness is down a bit more but it doesn't matter since I tried to increase and decrease the brightness on the defective one(left) and it made no difference.

YUP 100% the browser brightness is very low hence why its darker lol
yup, either browser brightness is low or you enabled "auto power savings" in display which displays darker whites to save energy...either way my whites are proper white even on low brightness so you must be doing something wrong in your test.
That, or the camera under exposed the amoled screen because of the brightness of the nova display. Keep in mind that good LCD screens like Retina display or the blackberry ones are about twice as bright as a super AMOLED screen, so the Nova display might be even better than that (but on the other hand the blacks are infinitely darker on amoled, which makes the contrast ratio infinitely better).
sorry but that looked so biased towards the optimus in the last 2 tests, if you had the SGSII at full brightness in the web browser test it clearly would of won by miles. Aswell as in the sun light test.
Edit: I retract most of that to make it in all of the tests xD.
In most of the pictures the LG Nova screen has very washed out colours especially the first one. Samsung Galaxy S II also hasn't been put on full brightness for this as the other phone obviously has. If you were trying to get away with thinking your LG Optimus Black screen was better than Super Amoled Plus then you've failed.

I don't care if the NOVA screen can wash dishes, it still comes attached to an LG phone. After my experience with the G2X and reading the O2X boards, I can't believe people are still buying LG high-end phones. LG should stick to TVs.

Pictures don't mean a thing unless they're taken with the same camera and the same manual settings? here are 3 pictures of my SGS2 at 100% brightness with the same camera, same shutter speed (1/400 sec), same iso (400 iso), I only changed the aperture (f/1.8, f/2 and f/8):
Doesn't look that bright to me in the last picture...
I have bought 2 Galaxy S From the first batch for me and my.
Now I just purchased one for my father.
And his screen is much better, may be it is just the calibration

the color of mine is more yellow.

May be is only that i don't have chance and the 2 first i get is like that.
In fact i don't see a band like other thread mention, it just like calibration thing.
But it is ok, if i haven't see my dad's one i would never notice
i don't think picture would reveal that small details, and will send his phone to the dad day.
Thx
Have you checked the Settings>display> Background Effects to verify both are on the same setting, and yours isn't on movie?
I read somewhere that some specific models have a yellowish colour problem on the screen..
This really shouldn't be normal, so my best answer is to send it in for repair
No yellowing on mine all looks good.
Are both phones using the same brightness settings?
On my phone, when the brightness is low, whites have a yellow cast, but on full brightness, they look very good.
Mine is white as well. No yellowish color or pink spots on camera shots.

What he described is not the problem that people are facing.
BTW Engadget are simply repeating what people are saying here. They have no information of their own and it was people here mailing them that alerted them to the problem in the first place.

I've noticed on mine that the colour temperature gets warmer at lower brightnesses. Also dark grey takes on a brown cast. On full brightness it's perfect though. No left hand side yellow cast either that I can see.
There's 60 pages of discussion on this already and the points you're making have been made there a dozen times. Do we really need another 60 page thread on the exact same issue? In the other thread there's also a code to tell what version of screen you have. It would be interesting to see if the claimed "new batch" has a different version.

The main question arises....HAS THE BANDING issue been rectified...so i can FINALLY go head with my S2 purchase ? I'm hesitant to purchase such an expensive device..KNOWING it has a very obvious banding defect...and it seems samsung is unaware of its existence!
I had to ask this question, when I had my S8500 I always set the Brightness to 0, still the screen was enough bright with vivid colors and good contrast looked very sharp and there was no Bluish tint on the screen. But here with S-AMOLED+ if I set the Brightness to mid level or higher then the screen performs well and probably beat the former screen. But when it's set to Auto brightness it seems that the screen has a bluish effect and the whites are not perfectly white, the pictures are not that crisp like it was on the former one, in this case I'd easily say that former screen was better. Now is this a feature of S-AMOLED+ or problem? In low or 0 brightness it is the S-AMOLED which perform much better but not S-AMOLED+ !

This drains way too much battery as it is seriously CPU intensive.
One reading this, I installed Watchdog, set to monitor all processes including system ones, I have been watching a few movies for 10-20mins and screen adjust is showing as using 0% cpu usage?
I am only adjusting the contrast not the colour, could that be the reason for my low cpu usage?
John.

just so everyone knows blacks usually use no power at all on an amoled display, however when you apply a screen filter everything black is now a slight tone of colour depending on which filter you added, this means that your screen will be using more power as every single pixel will always be on.
yeah, I know, but my video`s were really bad in dark scenes, total back areas of blotchyness, it was unwatchable, And i was really happy with my screen no yellow/green tinge or anything

Just been experimenting, Im using the trial version of 'Privacy Filter' and ive got it set to white and lowered it to just barely above the bottom of the scale, and well......OP is certainly on to something, on the gamma test image I can see every step as it should be yet ive got it set so low that it seems like black is still black as in I cant notice a difference between screen off and screen on on the black parts.
Things to note though, if you set the slider too low blacks become grey again and also the app im using gives my phone lag but as a proof of concept it deffinatley works and theres no reason why devs couldnt include something like this in there roms.
I will keep experimenting with different apps and settings, Im yet to try a paid app so that will be next, ill try and get some photos up in a bit.

And the filter settings im using.
Edit: After some more experimenting 'Privacy Filter' by S-LINK SOFT for 85p is the one im going for, I set all the colours to 255 and set the alpha to 3 and it sorts my problems, also the app allows you to choose which apps you want it to activate in, obviously you should do some testing for yourself but this certainley sorted mine.
Edit: Still really bad blotches on certain parts of certain videos, not a solid fix overall.
I can't believe I have fricking burn-in on my screen! I have had the phone less than two weeks and have been loving it but last night noticed lines on the screen. They look to line up exactly with the thread topics list on the Tapatalk app.
I have been using the app a lot but there is no way I should have burn in happening. It's not like I have even left the screen sitting in one place when using the app. My hypothesis is that it might have happened from using the ultra brightness mode (adapt display with maximum brightness on with auto brightness turned on) in bright sunshine and using the Tapatalk app.
I have googled burn in for this screen and haven't seen anything so I wonder if I somehow have a bad screen. It did look great when I first got it. If anyone out there has heard anything about this or can check their screen on a dark grey background I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Yeah I have had an s2, galaxy nexus and s3 before this and have noticed some screen uniformity issues before. Never had seen the distinctive thin lines like I see on the two s5's I have examined. Know the feeling. It freaks me out every time I use Tapatalk.
They also show up when you use a paint app and fill the screen with +-80% brightness with the screen brightness below 30%
However, they disappear when you turn the brightness of the screen up, (and compensate the black to 80% again) so it's just a bit of an error in the led calibration.
The area below the notification bar also has it when you run the colour tests after dialing *#0*#.
It's more predominantly visible on the S5 and Note 3 because those screens have the highest contrast ratio.
I'm horribly OCD over my devices too. There's a 0.5mm distance-to-screen difference between the edges of my screen protector... It bothers me every single day! >.<

Funny you should say that I just got one of those tempered glass screen protectors and was amazed that I got it on without any dust or air bubbles.
