so ever snice i flashed my hero to damage 2.1 rom my awake time is always so high. its always only about 10 minutes BELOW he uptime. therefore, KILLING my battery life. =(
I've been running DC off and on for almost a month now and have had excellent battery life. My awake times fluctuate (right now I'm at 13:30 Up time and 8:37 Awake time) but it hasn't been crazy.
Just curious, what is considered a "good" awake time/up time ratio? Are there better numbers on any of the other ROMs?
before if flashed it. lets say my uptime would be 50 minutes. my awake time would prob only be 2 minutes if i didnt use my phone at all. but now that i flashed it, my uptime would be 50 minutes and my awake time will prob like 40 minutes.
The current Damage Control ROM is bugged and has an extremely strange wake lock issue. I'd suggest using Fresh ROM 2.0d until this is fixed.
is the freshrom 2.0 just like damagecontrol ? i mean i LOVE evertying about DC. i wouldnt want something so different.

it shouldnt be totally different, but even if it isn't it works...or you could live with your battery life.
I don't think it's the ROM. I am running DC 2.7.02 and right now my up time is 21:45 while my awake time is 2:48.
My battery life has been fantastic. Have you tried looking at various radios?

yea after a search...weird i didnt think it worked...i found that this complaint is on almost every rom by at least one person. There are quite a few fixes. biggest one is disabling stock messaging app if used and using handcent or chomp.
Also you can go to settings, about phone, battery, and see what is using the battery.
This isnt for you dooj just quoted on your statement.

I had that happen recently to a friend. Try just doing a factory reset.
Settings -> privacy -> factory reset.
Your phone will still remain rooted and the rom will still remain too.
This fixed it for him.

go to messages, then press menu and go to setting. uncheck auto-retrieve, and uncheck received notifications.
edit* i did this to my wifes phone a few weeks ago as she was having a problem on another rom and her awake time still shows high but her battery is much better and she quit hitting me.

whats your time without signal? go to settings, about phone, battery, battery use and see whats using the battery and if click on the cell standby i think to see time without signal.
also go to menu, applications, running services, and see whats running and how long. stop the ones you dont use that have been running the entire time your phone was awake.

If you want to remove it, then at the windows command prompt assuming you have your SDK tools path set up correctly:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/app
rm [messaging app].apk
I dont know what the name of the messaging app is, but I think it might be Mms.apk You are at your own risk if that removes the wrong app.
You dont have to tecnically remove it. Just disable auto retrieve and notifications in that app.

I have been running the stock messaging with no problems.

As for the current Damage Control ROM having a wake-lock issue, what IS the latest version? I am running v2.07.2 (the one before the TrevE mod) and I have no wake-lock, random reboots, or time without signal.
I have not found it to be the rom that is keeping things awake technically. I have tried to figure this one out, and all I can say it seems to be tied to some apps that I have downloaded that starts to throw the awake issue off.
This has happened to me on all 2.1 roms.......after a couple weeks of downloading some apps.
I only use root explorer and mixzing for now and have not had a problem with just those two.
I think I even confirmed that Pac-man was keeping the phone awake, although this is probably not the only one.
anyway, hope it helps.
hey guys i have the fresh rom 2.0d running on my hero, its amazing i love it, only issue im having is that the phone overheats, any suggestions, i havent added or done anything to it after rooting and then flashing to this rom, i installed advanced task killer to close any progs in the background, any other suggestionts it gets extremely hot to the point where itll burn your hand, im thinking it might be the phone, thanks guys!
sorry ill try to make this quick, yea i switched batterys with my brothers tp2 and still having problems, his tp2 is running fine, any thing i can try really dont want to swap phones, i know freshrom 2.0d dosent have setCPU cuz i read somewhere that having the wrong settings there can cause problems, thanks!

Maybe you can try flashing a different rom and see what happens. That will tell you if its rom or phone related.
I had the same problem with fresh but it was programs eating up cpu and not really "overheating", the battery went dead after about an hour too. The next time it happens go to the battery use setting and see what it eating up your battery. My problem was with Google Listen.
did you wipe before your install of fresh? even if you did I would suggest a fresh wipe and reflash.
Ever since I jumped on to 2.1 ROMs (done many different ones...now on Fresh 2.0d) I've had overheating issues. If I didn't have my sights set on the EVO i'd probably be more concerned.
Instead of using ATK to kill programs you could try autokiller. I used to like ATK so I could manage my task killing myself but I now find that having Autokiller set on extreme makes my phone run extremely well and I never get the overheating. I did notice that wifi tether does seem to cause it to heat up and the other thing I noticed is that a silicone case will help it to retain heat and build it up even more.
This doesn't contribute much, but I figure I'd like to add my 2 cents:
My phone will get very hot throughout the day. I'm sure that it doesn't help that I'm streaming music ota constantly... either way, when it gets too hot the charge indicator will start to flash green then orange, which tells me it's time to give the phone a break...
After about 5 minutes of no Internet activity, the charge goes back to normal.
If you have a weak signal, this will also boost the radiation of your phone considerably since it needs to increase the power of the radio to compensate for lack of signal. See if you can reduce your data usage and find out if that helps.
You can also try to rig something up that will help distribute the heat away from the phone, such as a heat-sink case -- it'd be a pretty good idea to capitalize on!
I got my HD2 around 2 months ago. After some intense fiddling with it in the beginning, I installed one of the Energy ROM versions available back then, and my HD2 could keep working for 2 consecutive days without recharging. Granted, I didn't use too many apps back then, and neither did I make a large number of phone calls... BUT that doesn't mean the phone was in sleep mode the whole time.
Having a fully recharged phone last Saturday morning I decided to see how long it'll hold. I tried to use it as little as possible (this still leaves background tasks, but I'll get to that later). It held up reasonably for the whole Saturday, and at the end of the day I still had something around ~60% battery.
So I locked the phone and went to bed.
And when I woke up, the phone was at 25%. After taking a shower, it was at 20%. The phone wasn't hot (which would indicate that some process is hogging all the CPU), and the Task Manager showed nothing out of the ordinary.
Now, about the only background tasks I've ever been running were Parlingo and Lumos... and I didn't even install Lumos after the last ROM update.
What can I do to diagnose this problem? Is the battery dying? Is the power info incorrect and I was getting false readings entire Saturday? Is this the ROM? What can I do to make sure?
Rule out the battery cheaply by purchasing an eBay replacement... I have 3 of these and they are good stable batteries... and cheap...

Do you mean that Lumos is still running as a background task when it isn't installed, or that you always used to have it running before the problem?

Sorry for the late reply (work work work)...
I mean that I used to have Lumos installed, but in order to try to pinpoint the source of the fast battery drain, I decided not to install it when I upgraded Energy.
I'll try some batteries, sure... But if there are any solutions that I could try and which are free, then I'd rather try those first...

Just wondering which radio are you using ?
I did have the same problem like you and it just keep getting faster that my battery wont even last me over a night .
What i did was i reflash it back to the stock rom with the radio that came with the stock one. I used it for a day and see when its stable , I Flash my radio to 2.10 and till now I am good . Btw I am using energy rom as well.
If your battery is lasting 24hours, then there is nothing wrong with the battery.

I went back to 2.07. I figured the voice quality is OK enough while the 3G towers in Poland are sucky to begin with, meaning 3G switching / range isn't a real issue.
With the 17th July Energy ROM everything seems to have went back to normal.
Hi all,
The battery life of my 4month old SGS is becoming shorter every week! I can 'almost' last a work day (8 hours) with a fully charged battery and minimal use.
I had this problem also on the stock firmware, Darky's rom 8.x was a slight improvement (much faster tho!), Light-ning rom and Darky's rom 9.x.
Everyday I charge my battery untill it is full, when my alarm goes off it's already at 98% (it's still hooked up). When I'm in the train to school, my battery already dropped around 86% (being idle). I check some mobile websites, my e-mail and read some twitter messages.
Because I know services as Twitter (I'm using Tweetdeck) uses alot of resources and battery, so when I'm done looking I always shut down those programs. And I often do an 'end all' task in the 'System' app which I purchased from the market lately to monitor my battery.
During the day the only thing I do is check my mail and some websites, but not for long, mostly it would be around 5minutes or so. So WiFi is turned OFF, GPS is turned OFF, and only GMail synchronizes with default settings. So what's the deal? Is my battery slowly dieing because of oldness, or is there another problem?
Thanks in advance for helping me! You're doing a great job!
Sincerely yours,
S1GNZ
after flashing your custom roms of choice... did you ever do a battery calibration?
like let your phone drain till it dies on its own... turn it on againa nd let it die again to completely drain it to the point where u cant even turn it on.
Then plug your phone in to charge and let it charge to 100%. Keeping the phone plugged in turn on your phone into recovery. Then clear battery status.
Then reboot your phone into normal mode and let it continue charging till it says 100%. WHen you unplug your phone it SHOULD say 100% still.
This normally fix the problem but if you notice that your phone is dying quickly still then PM me.
One small advice, try logging out google talk,of-course if you are not on it much,it will give you at least 2-3 hrs more.
Also, there is already a thread active on this forum 'dont kill your phone
,give it a life' give that a read.
Mainly this battery drains are there because of apps doing sync. or polling.identify them and adjust settings.

I am not 100% sure if you auto logged or not.I believe not but if not so , then open app, press menu/setting button on phone, select logout.also if you not intending to use data network, press power key till you see a menu turn off, data network, turn it on when you need it.These small things saves some power.
If you dont want to mess around with this little twiks then 'juice plotter' is the app for you.it will manage lots of things and defi. saves battery.
BTW based on your usage desc., I think I use it in similar way ...almost and yet phone makes ~2 days.

You of course wouldn't be doing this alot nor should you NEED to do this often. It's only something you do when you're experiencing what you currently are.
Personally I have no idea why anyone say u "Should NOT" do this.. it's not like you're altering anything hardware wise. It's mainly software and power usage aspects.
Like I said to each their own. Some people say custom roms are a "No-No" cuz it messes with the phone in more bads than good and some says stock roms are for noobs. You dont HAVE to try what I said, it's merely a suggestion of fix or methods that seems to solve the problems others have encountered.
Clearing the battery status pretty much resets it's counter to 100% and from there it will "calculate" the life of the battery from full to empty. It's a calibration thing.
Now on regards to usage, keep your data plan off and auto-sync off when you're not using it. Leave your wifi off and gps off as well.. pretty much keep anything you dont need off until you need it. Some samsung apps does a background run thing where it'll auto turn on and auto run in the background which drains ur battery quite badly. If you don't use goggle talk or samsung chat apps, there are many ways to remove them completely so it won't mess with your battery life
Simple you installed a rom with multiple posts on battery drain problem .

I did what you said and fully drained my battery yesterday, kept it charging overnight, cleared the batterystats through recovery mode and at the moment it's charging till 100%. And according to my usage, I have Wifi and GPS turned of as default. And because I reinstalled a new ROM inclusive data wipe I don't have much chat apps installed, maybe there are some default apps that don't show up in the 'System panel' app though?

Care to explain a bit further?
FYI, I installed these ROMS:
past: Stock firmware 2.2.1
past: Darky's ROM v8.0 Gingerbread edition
past: Light-ning ROM 2.2 (if I'm correct, it's probably the latest)
current: Darky's ROM v9.2 Extreme edition (9.2 should've fixed the battery drain, am I right?)
Can't thank you enough for the replies!
Sincerely yours,

im having similar problems too. calibrating doesnt really make a difference.
i installed an app called task identifier which is brilliant it tell me whats happening when the phone is asleep. the only trouble is i dont understand what these processes are so i cant disable them.... is there any sort of app out there that completely logs / signs you out of every app ??
i have 108 apps (not including system apps) and its hard trying to eliminate the battery drainers
Care to explain a bit further?
As it says post lots of with battery problems big big percentage running Darky rom .
current: Darky's ROM v9.2 Extreme edition (9.2 should've fixed the battery drain, am I right?) You would have to ask on dARKY Post .
Look at Battery drain thread LAST POST OR SO MAY BE OF INTEREST .
I am of the opinion that if a rom breaks something then installing more roms will often not fix the problem . I prefer a blank completely wiped phone in such cases with no trace of any rom left on it .
jje
@azzledazzle 108 apps? really ????
I don't have that much on my PC!
I think we should start narrowing down which apps drain most juice. I've been using Advanced Task Killer just to narrow down a couple.
example:
Sound Hound - starts on its own
Facebook had an issue with notifications push, when disabled, it still sent notifications to my phone. But I think they fixed it in the latest version.
We could start adding versions to know which app is a 'juice drainer'
OK, so I'm a noob (to evo) and can't post on the dev thread for the Alliance 7.7 ROM so I'm going to throw this out here and hope for a response.
I tried RLS1 and didn't like it, there was some functions that irritated me so I went back to 7.7.
I like 7.7, I've got it stable, no sense reloads and I love the functionality.
However, my battery life is atrocious!!! I thought this was supposed to help save batt life??? I burned about 50% batt life in less than 3 hours in sleep mode!??
What did I do wrong??
I've been experimenting with Task Killer, Juice Defender and other supposedly power "saving" apps and settings but I haven't found the "holy grail" yet.
I'd really like someone to point me in the right direction if at all possible..Thanks!
Did you try calibrating your battery when you first flashed the rom?
Try downloading the battery calibration app by nema from the market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration
What PRI do u have? If you go into settings and about phone (I'm not exactly sure if that's the correct path) it should tell you. If your running something newer than 1.77 some phones have a wake issue where it wont let the phone sleep with newer PRI's. Try downgrading to 1.77, the wake issue should then be gone.
You can get PRI 1.77 from here just make sure you backup your WiMax keys before you flash, you know just in case something goes wrong. : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
Maybe its one of the apps that your using that's not letting your phone sleep hence your battery drain. Spare parts on the market should show you if any apps are keeping your phone awake.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.androidapps.spare_parts
Or your battery is going bad? I was having such horrible battery life with my Evo that after a while it just couldn't hold a charge anymore. I purchased a new one and all is well now.
Try an AOSP rom? AOSP roms tend to have better battery life than Sense roms. They don't have many services running in the background eating up memory.
I can't think of anything else anymore but hope this helps!

Lol Oh no none of that. I don't troll on anyone for not knowing something, we've all been there. Are you using amon ra recovery 2.3? If so, boot into recovery, go to backup/restore, nandroid backup and then it'll give u a list of things you might want to select to backup. Just unselect everything, select wimax and then select perform backup. It should take a couple of mins and then your done.
Actually I'm using ClockWork Mod 2.6 just seemed easier to me than AmonRa. (weird I know). but ok, nand back up and just select the WiMax info??
Also, v7.7 had an undervolt script built into it that some phones, mine included don't like. Might try flashing alliance rls2. Had the script removed.

one of the reasons I didn't like RLS1 was the way they had the personalize button set to open the Kingsrom website. Did they change that, or is there a way to change it?
oi, I had things going pretty well with 7.7 but it started getting glitchy and slow. Don't know why because once I had everything running smooth I didn't mess with it anymore. Reboot helped for a little while but started glitching again shortly after.

You might try going into your personalize settings and select a different lock screen, I know there are a couple that take that certain option away LOL I use the weather one with the app selector or the wallpaper with the app selector. Hope it helps

no good, lock screen isn't displaying the way it should, tried several and nothing changes.
Did a factory reset and the lock screen is working correctly again. There must have been something that glitched when I restored my settings.
Tried restoring my backups and it the lock screen isn't right again. So I guess I either live with it or start from scratch again..
