Very slow HTC HD2 after start up or soft reset - HD2 General

Guys,
My HD2 is very slow after a restart or a soft reset. This is very annoying. I have installed a task manager and the CPU Usage says that Idle process is between 90-98% or something. Further nothing strange.
I have to use the HD2 at least 15 minutes before he gets to his normal speed. Now he is at normal speed and this says the task manager: (when the HD2 is slow the task manager is almost the same)
In the processes this are the most using memory processes:
gwes.exe 29066 KB
device.exe 792 KB
cprog.exe 7197 KB
manila.exe 5722 kb
services.exe 4782 KB
filesys.exe 4202 KB
shell32.exe 3094 KB
Manila version:
2.5.19211619.0
ROM version:
1.66.404.1 (76641) NLD
Radio version:
2.06.51.07
Thanks for your support.

Hi DJ-jan. Have you installed any apps to your phone. Some apps, or combination of apps can cause problems.
Have you done any modding to the phone. Was the phone like this when you first start using it. If it was fine at the beginning, I'll guess it is something that has been installed.
Try removing some programs, one at a time to see if it fixes the problem.
If all else fails try and hard reset the device.

Thanks for your awnser but I dont know anymore haha! The apps i have downloaded i installed on my SD card.

Take the SD card out and restart it. If it's the same then you probably need a hard reset. If it's better then it's either software on the card that's causing the issue, or it's the card itself. It may just be a slow card, or it may be knackered. Do you have a different card you could copy everything onto and try that, just to rule it out?

My program files say:
RSS Hub
CoPilot
GoogleMaps
GPRSEnablerDisabler
Lookout Mobile Security
Spelletjes (games)
Trein (train, dutch app from Marketplace)
Verbindingen (links)
Widgets
Windows Media Player

Mmm, i tried this. The HD2 seems to be a little bit faster without the SD card but is far from the original speed.
I could do a hard reset, but then ill loose all my institutions. Is there a program or something where i can export all this? I know MyPhone, but thats only for SMS, contacts and stuff...

I personally use MyPhone and just reinstall everything again, but that's just me. I do know that there are quite a few popular backup solutions out there, but someone else will have to advise you on them as I know nothing about them.
I can advise you on how to back up your settings for Co0kie's Home Tab though lol

Haha I know, i have installed that Home tab and i saw the export option, very good!

sbp backup can do that but backing up applications and restoring them isnt recommended when changing roms.. i experienced that myself.
i just use myphone to back up everything and reinstalling the apps isnt much work, most custom roms have built in installers where you can just put ur .cabs in 1 dir and its automaticly installed
good luck!

Hmm ok. But i just use the original ROM. Going to fix it, thanks!

HD2 Boot up
I understand that boot up times may increase with additional installation of apps. However, is it possible to edit the boot up file or registry like in a PC? I would love to be rid of the T-mobile Animation & Windows Logo and go right to Sense UI. My phone works great even with all the apps. I just want to shorten the boot up time if possible. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Just use PIM Backup for sms contacts etc.. my htc is a little slow too but it slwos down after i reinstall sms and contacts.. weird
something is wrong. my kaiser wasnt this slow

you format LEO or delete some file in windows\Startup and reboot.

Extended ROM; How can it be made useful?

Hi there,
I made visible the extended ROM of M600 with registry tweaks seen in this forum. I dont use any of the programs on the extended ROM, coz I dont like my phone to be customised for my service provider. (I soft reseted while it was trying to customize after the hard reset).
Now I have a 10MB of Ext ROM on "My Device". My qustions are;
1) Is this Ext ROM just like another 10MB SD Card?
2) WOuld this space make the my handheld run faster? or can this be made available fot programme memory?
3) Is there any advantage of installing programmes on it compared to on th SD Card?
Currently I have about 3MB of Orange CAB files on it. None of them I use.
How can I use this space efficiently?
Thanks in advance for any comments
ps: Another thing I just remembered is that, after I made this Ext ROM visible, I cant save the camera pics to SD card. The options on the camera settings are to save it on Main Memory or Ext ROM! it doesnt recognise SD card! funny! Any way around?
Anyone please..?
I order:
1) Yes it is exactly like a 10MB SD card, you just can't remove it from the device. If you need to hard reset it will become hidden again but the data will not be lost.
2) No. Program memory is RAM and this is FLASH. You can only use it for storage.
3) It is mounted before the SD, so if you have an app that needs to run on start up, you can put it on the ext ROM but not the SD.
4) I suggest you move the Orange cabs to your PC. Having the i-mate variant I had 9MB filled with stuff out of which all I needed were Skype and Voice speed dial. Then use this space for the basic and most needed apps. Also some apps like TCPMP can be used with content from different SD cards so ext ROM would be a good place for them. I try to keep main memory free for outlook stuff.
5) Yea, the camera app only seems to recognize the first storage card it sees. Don't know about a fix for that.

Thank you very much, Levenum!
I finally understood a bunch of things about the ExtROM.
About this 5th point, I would add something.
The same identical problem raises when the \Network path created by Resco Explorer is shown on the main memory root.
The internal camera seems able to access only to the first two objects in the mountpoint list (you can see this list when installing some apps, as the dest options radio button)
So, question comes out: what about hiding ExtROM again after installing startup apps on it ?
I mean: are those apps still runnable, when staying on a hidden mountpoint ?
Thanks for any answer
..._
Sorry to butt in on this topic, but I have also been thinking of doing this.
I would just like to know though once the Extended Rom has been unlocked as described in many past posts, can you lock it again?
I am just asking this because, what happens if I have to return the phone? Surely messing with it would void any warranty?
I would need to restore the CABS back to Extended Rom, and then lock it before returning it.
Thanks

Interesting, I never tried it. Perhaps if you don't change the MountHidden flag, but only the MountOrder.

I don't know about other devices, but in case of the Prophet it's just a matter of changing back the registry values and soft resetting.
Thanks for that.
I have already backed up my Extended Rom, as Total Commander let me copy the CABS without unlocking the Extended Rom.
Orange has only added 1.95 MB which seems such a waste of vital memory.
I have heard that approx 10 MB is set aside for this. Is this set physically in manufacture by HTC? Can the extended Rom be merged into main memory like partitions can be merged on a PC?
Thanks
I read somwhere that removing things from the extended rom gives the device more storage available and shown int he memory part of settings. This however is not true, the extended rom is a seperate partition, full or empty the device will work the same.
I use mine to store the cabs of installs I use when I hard reset. Saves me copying them over each time.
Thanks very much Levenum and others who contributed. That was very informative and I am glad many others have benefited with this thread.
Cheers
One note:
I made a little experiment this Friday, which require a me to restore my Jamin to it's original state. (Hard reset + restore ext ROM).
I didn't check the CAB attributes when I copied them so even though the ext ROM was in it's original state all cabs that were used after first hard rest were deleted and didn't install after second hard reset.
So when restoring your ext ROM make sure you mark all CABs 'read only'.
I unlock ExtRom and put mein cab, edit config.txt.
But after HardReset mein cab didn't installiert.
I think, dieses cab need to signen.
Help me please signen mein cab or any cab theoretically.
you also need the modified autorun.exe, the config file isnt read by the default one.

I have renamed the file so:
my_file.cab -> Default_my_file.cab
All the same it is not installed!
There it is spoken about Wizard, i have O2 Xda Neo.
Where it is possible to take patched file Autorun.exe?
Can somebody to lay out it if it´s have?
Please, help me.
as the thread says, you cant just rename the file as it needs to be signed and designed for wm5 for it to isntall. To do your own cabs you need to have a special autorun.exe that reads a config file.

HELP!!..how to reinstall htc OS, not hard reset..thx..

hi guys..i m using a HTC touch (GSM) with WM professional 6...hw can i reinstall/reformat the OS completely...i try google and search here bt all thy give is hard reset, not reformat the OS..so no choice bt to ask help here...pls sumbody guide me....thk u vy much 4 ur time...=)
What do you mean by reformat ? If you want to return to factory settings, hard reset is the answer.
HI
Did you install a cooked rom and you want to return to the original HTC rom of your Device , If so you need to search and download the official rom specific for device model and flash it (your device will become locked again unless yoy had a hard SPL)
If you Didnot install a cooked rom and still have the original one but having some problems may be due to installing some programs then all you need is a hard reset

Hard reset reinstalls your original rom new as it came out of the box but it will erase all data and programs you added to phone
Hanging ,resetting and slowing may be due to virus(not common on WM) or more commonly low memory (too much prog or data on internal storage) , Bad or incompatible software
Antivirus
There are several antivirus prog for handheld devices (Kasersky , McAfee etc) search Google buy or use a trial version and check your device
If infected after removing virus it is better to format SD card
Reformat OS = Flash.

Yes, hard reset also clear memory too.
but to be extra safe, flashing is a better bet.
Flash to stock htc rom.
Hard reset clears your phone completely
to backup your data you can
Use SPB backup(I had it on HTC software disc in thge box) this will back all your settings ,contacts , messages and programs into an exe file on SD card after hard reset run it and everything is there again BUTif the cause is virus or bad programe it will retun to so i prefer that you dont backup programs
PIMbackup is also a free tool to back your messages and contacts only

leo ce log tool - problem solved

After emailing back and forth with the HTC support team about the Leo's "too loud ear piece" and after asking me a million questions they finally sent me the Debug tool 3.4 to run it in my Leo and send them the logfile.
Well the stupid application it's been running for 20 hours and never seems to stop. It did create some 20 DM files on my SD card which can't be seen in explorer anymore. I put it into a card reader to see what;s happening.
I hard reseted my Leo to stop the debugging tool but no use, I reflashed but nu use the darn thing still runs and kills my battery! WIFI doesn't work either!!!
What should I do?

Then, copy everything you want off your memory card and reformat it.

My HD2 is very unstable with different ROMS. Help please

Hello all,
I'm kinda frustrated with my HD2 device at the moment. It worked perfectly fine until a few days ago.
It has begun to freeze _very_ often. With some ROMS it can't even boot up. It freezes when I have to enter my PIN. On other ROMS it is guranteed to freeze when using ActiveSync/Exchange.
Using HSQL, I've tried L3v5y, XannyTechRom, and MIRI. All with the same result.
Have you got any ideas whats wrong with my device?
Any help will be much appreciated.
I have no idea about whats wrong but this has been a common issue/problem for many members...I don't think I saw this many issues with the HD...I dunno whats wrong with HD2 or the ROMs that it starts freezing for some...maybe the HSPL is buggy? I dunno to be honest.
maybe you should install a stock rom in between or go to MTTY and see if that fixes the issues for you.
Overall tho, its frightening to see how many people have freezing issues with Sense after flashing a couple of custom ROMs...I'm afraid it might eventually happen to everyone and thats why we need to find out what is causing this.
BTW try to format your SD card and then flash a stock ROM without the SD card and see if there is any improvement...my guess is that it will work fine again (for a while at least).
What I have figured out is that with different roms the behaviour is different, depending IN WHICH ORDER you have the links in the autostart folder.
Right after flashing it should be ok and if you install than other programms the startup interfears with the startup of htc-sense
Finaly I have the best result (on my device with the programms I have installed) keeping the htc-Sense startup as the LAST item.
You can change the order with sk-tools (Autotstart items).
You can check this (If you have a chance to access):
- Make a reset and do not enter the pin code of your sim card (on my device this was making a difference, if you do not have a pin code maybe you should take out your sim card that the phone cannot connect)
- Go to the settings and unselect in "Today" "HTC Sense"
Than you should have the normal "speed" of the device and you should be able to start sk tools and change the booting order.
It looks like that - depending on the start up order that applications - processes are waiting for each other and using nearly 100% of cpu power and you have therefore the impression that the device is frozen.
I am sorry I do not know how to change the startup order without sk-Tools
Best regards,
dingolino

When you flash lots of cooked roms, they get "bloated" and the devices started hard-resetting for no reason. this is because of files from old roms being left when the new rom is flashed.
MTTY allows you to enter the device on bootloader and use service commands to format the file system on the device so you can remove all rom files before flashing a new rom!!

basicly it will format your system and make sure you don't have any files from older roms left on the system which might cause this issues.

Try deleting the folder "\Application Folder" on the storage card using your PC/Laptop, and reinsert the SD card into HD2. I assume you are using ROM cooked with Manila version that has the document tab.
Let us know if this works for you. It took me a long time and many flashes to figure this out. I suppose you have configured your HD2 for emails or MS Exchange pushmail?
Edit : If you already experience the slowdown caused by inserting the SD Card, MAKE SURE you reboot your HD2 before re-inserting the SD card.
I had this "freezing during startup" with a number of roms (always after I installed my software) and since that I am always "tweaking" it by the startup order as I described it and was able to solve it!
I do not think that it is hardware related in the amount of cases which are reported. And I am also not a strong believer of this "flashing" and mtty discussion (it could be a solution is some cases but I do not think in this relatively larger number of cases which are reported).
For most of the rom cookers it is not the 1st rom cooking they are doing and the HD2 is not the 1st HD2 device for HTC as well. This is the reason why I do not think that there is a principle rom problem nor a principle hardware problem
Manila Sense is a complex pcs of software and the startup is therefore more complex.
Depending on the tweaks the rom cookers are doing on the XIP and other WM internals there could be a timing interfearance during booting and this is creating the trouble for Manila Sense startup (network, phone, etc.).
Reminds me to the "good old days" with ATART-ST where you had dedicated tools to rearrange the startup seaquenze of the Accessories
At least i think it is worth trying it, you cannot loose anything.
But I played not only with the finaly boot order of htc-Sense (the last one) but also I put other elements in a different order.
Sometimes it was helping to install Panolauncher and put it before HTC Sense startup - I had the impression that just having another application before HTCsense made an improvement to "give HTCSense" more time.
Does not sound like science but a little bit like Voodoo ...

Let us know if this works for you. It took me a long time and many flashes to figure this out.

You can check this (If you have a chance to access):

thanx!
Hi,
sounds to me like you have flashed so many times you HD2 has become "Bloated"
this is where for eg, Rom X is 110Mb, and then you Flash Rom Y which is only 100Mb.
When you do the flash there is 10Mb of residual files left from the previous rom., when this happens often you get strange things happening like you describe and worse, your device can start hard resetting for no reason!!
Go to this thread (swap the ** for tt ) h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=616422 (I cant post links yet!!) and it will fix your issue. (The thread has been shut as there has been a big argument over it, something to do with a disagreement over drivers!! - how gay!)
I can honestly say, although i have only joined recently, i have been a user of this method for about 6 years, I personally know the Guy who opened the thread and i would stand buy him 100%.
Although the thread is closed, i will help with queries via PM if you like!

Edit : If you already experience the slowdown caused by inserting the SD Card, MAKE SURE you reboot your HD2 before re-inserting the SD card.

I tried deleting the \Application Folder folder and reset the phone.
Of course this equaled a hard reset as all system data stored was in \Application Folder.
So I removed my storage card and did a hard reset so that the system data will not be stored in the storage card.
Hopefully this will be make the device more stable as such.
use the mtty to format ur device first, then flash the rom u want to flash.
I have encountered the same issues just like u, after use the MTTY, so far so good.
the post is kind of complex, but it is worth to have a try.

space on the phone

ok so it broke down some months ago, got it back just now and when i installed some stuff on it( brians bwtaskbar, dinik keyboard/slider/icon themev1.5,tx opera mobile 10 flash, world series of poker, meon full version, xdashutdown, klaxxon, cookies home tab, chteditor, sbs tweaks, magicall,ms my phone, and .net CF3.5) and it already says its full....i tried installing some of them on my sd but it still only has 7096k left and runs very slow...any ideas on what to do/what to re-install or de-install? i cant believe only these few programs are already making the phone saying its full :S i mean the DINIK stuff aren't even big..they are just themes etc :/
does any1 have a app that shows where all the space is being used? like when you click properties on your pc on a disk?
if it's the euro version, I thought there was only like 260mb of storage? If so, it doesn't take long to fill.
I would suggest doing a hard reset, then installing any 3rd party apps to the SC and save the phone space for the themes and taskbars etc.
hmm ok thanks ill hardreset it soon!

No, they have 512MB.
EDIT: Oh, I think I understand. With my T-Mo USA HD2, using the ROM in my sig, my total 1GB of memory turned into 705.79MB. That means the ROM took out almost 300MB. If the WWE HD2 comes with 512MB, you will be stuck with roughly 200-300MB of storage.
Lucky us!

When you get the cabs, where do you store them? Do you keep your cabs on the phone or on the SD-card? If you keep the cabs on the phone and install the cabs on the phone, there's the problem.
Are you talking about Start > Settings > System > Memory?
Keep in mind, the ROM you're using also takes away some of the 512MB of memory you have.
well i have not installed any roms or anything...its till fresh from the store/htc factory cus they re-setted it to factory mode
uhm i put the dabs on my sd card and then install them to my sd card also but i saw that when i install them to my sd card it STILL takes away some phone memory(so it does not install on the sd card o only partly)
i go to start-->manila settings--.info about phone(using dutch lang so i could be miss-typing it sorry haha) and it says
storage
-------phone
total storage space : 195.29MB
used storage space : 188.59MB
free storage space : 6.71MB
total programs : 336.93MB
used for programs : 1.67.51MB
free for programs : 169.42MB
and my sd card is not important i think but its a 4gb one
sms / emails and IE (and I assume Opera) keep all data on the main memory.
Try clearing the cache and or use pm clean:

none of those things should eat up all the memory. How many text messages, emails etc are you keeping on your phone?
You might try a program like suggested or ClearTemp that you can set to clear caches of opera, google maps, email attachments, so you don't run out of memory.
well my hotmail account has 50k emails(i keep junk for fun) and it shows only 50mails on it so what should i do? i dont email people on my phone anyway, just dont sue a mail program or something?
got any programs for me to instal btw? hehe ^^
50 emails is the limit of the windows live software.
maybe its possible to show all emails if you dont use the windows live software but setup the hotmail using the pop3 method descrived in the forum (i have not tried this so cant be sure)
the HTC album cache eats alot of the storage memory (sometimes over 30 meg) worth deleting every once in a while
its a good idea to move the HCT album cache and opera cache to eaither the SD card or to a ramdisk (both methods are described elsewhere in the forum)
