So I was wondering, what Mac-users here are using to make life easier using a Windows Mobile phone with a Macintosh?
I currently use SyncMate (free version, just for contacts and agenda backups) and have tried using Doublemate to sync my phone to iTunes, but that didn't work yet and actually haven't tried anymore since months. So I just copy over musicfiles from iTunes to the X1 in USB-mode.
For movies I just use iSquint to re-encode them to MP4's to watch in the mediapanel. Still need to find a way to properly tag my iTunes library because I'm still getting 'unknown artists' which of course is highly annoying!
I backup a lot of mobile-snapshots with iPhoto, which I find to be an excellent and easy-to-use photomanager though with poor flickr-integration (I use flickr-uploader mostly anyway).
So, Mac user's of X1's and WinMo devices, share with me and others your experiences, tips & tricks of using two highly competing OS's!
I don't think many people use Macs here...
I use my MarkSpace Missing Sync for Windows Mobile (http://www.markspace.com/) to sync Address Book and iCal with my X1. I tried SyncMate (the paid version), didn't like it, think it needed more development; one annoying thing it did was try to grab every USB device connected to my Mac. I've also got Parallels VM installed, so I can also use MS ActiveSync.
I don't worry too much about trying to sync with iTunes or iPhoto, just simply mount my X1 and transfer files using drag and drop - keep it simple.
I also use my X1 as a wireless broadband modem. I use OS X bluetooth DUN rather than a USB connection, works well.
I don't consider OS X and WM compete at all. In fact there's plenty of support around that they complement one and other nicely.
I've been totally anti-microsoft mac-head person for a long time... BUT I've been a huge fan of SE phones also for a equally long time.
I was thinking of getting a iPhone like everyone else, but there were so many features missing you'll get on a "regular" smartphone. And I was also a avid Palm user also in their pre-phone pda heyday. So it was just so logical go with X1.
Just flashed to 6.5 it got rid of so many annoying things I didn't like on 6.1. Mainly on UI side. And I love the superhackability of WM/HTC phones. You can do anything like with them. iPhones a different game.
Basically the keypoints for me were keyboard, console-emulators and expanpability/hackability. Actually I consider my X1 as a nice little xtra laptop to live alongside my MacBook Pro. Nowadays I don't drag my 17" inch along all the time as I can do all the things I need on the go with X1. And WM is a pretty straightforward and basic OS so I get along with it.
My mac talks and syncs pretty decently with X1 via Missing Sync. It's not perfect but enough for me. And mostly the regular usb transfer does the trick.
And after founding out xda-developers this has grown into a nice little hobby to tweak around with WM
I use itune agent to sync my itune music on pc with my x1 it works
ok another option is the program salling
both are made to sync non ipods/phones with itunes
but not sure if there are mac versions of them or other options for mac
Are you guys also irritated by OS X leaving invisble files on Windows devices? I'm guessing it's something that has a good function within OS X itself, but outside of OS X it just takes up space.
double post please delete
Hey all, I was using Missing Sync from MarkSpace worked great, although sometimes you might need to reboot both devices if recognisation is FAIL.
Anyway ran into some problems a while back with restoring my backups with some roms just failing after a restore, figured it mustve been a problem with a specific contact, so now have two different contact databases, my phone and my pc.

What do you mean? To backup or update your contactlists etc?
I just use a free copy of Syncmate, I only use it to backup contacts. Other stuff I just drop as a USB drive.
I have an X1i (believe it's a UK release because I got it from the Middle East), and I don't have a PC. I have a Mac
I'm currently using The Missing Sync to sync contacts and what not, but there appears to be a lot more I could be doing with ROMs if I had a PC running. For example, I am unable to update my ROM with the Service Update tool because there just isn't one for the Mac.
Any tips/ideas on this? All the ROMs out there are in .EXE format. Do I just copy them to the X1 and run them? Or do I really HAVE to have a PC?

I posted a thread a while ago regarding just this, whether other Mac users are using WinMo phones as well. Regarding ROM's, I still have no clue. You could try virtual software if you have an Intel Mac, I'm on a PPC Powermac so that's not an option for me.
Turns out there just aren't many and using a PC is the best solution.
Windows Mobile just isn't Mac friendly.
it's not just a mac thing it's also not very linux, 64bit xp, 64bit vista, 64bit win7, 32bit vista, 32bit win7 friendly
Bugger.
It's not very nice having to bum someone's PC and run hacks off it. Hmmmm...
I'm going to experiment with Missing Sync, see how far it'll take me.
I can run Bootstrap if I must, though I just totally despise windows. I'm looking for any way to get it off my xperia - everything I CAN do appears to be skinning, nothing more. Not even Android can be set to hard boot - yet...
Yes, don't ask...the xperia was a gift. If I had my way, it would've been anything NOT running WM.

Hello, and thanks for such a wonderful resource as this site is.
I've had my Sprint touch for over a year and hated all the quirks the stock winmo 6.1 had with it.
My question is: Is it possible to set up a Bluetooth Connection on a windows PC, and have it share the internet connection of the PC with Android? I remember being able to do it with my Zodiac years ago, but don't know if it would apply to Android.
I have no data plan on my phone, so I can't download the camera fix, or any applications. This is the only thing that's keeping me from wiping windows from NAND.
Thank you for reading, and your insight.
Afaik, no.

With Linux, yes, with XP, maybe, with Vista / 7 probably not. But you can't get to the market on your phone via BT pan, I've tried.
May I ask how you managed to do it with Linux? I'm running Ubuntu atm, but I haven't made the switch because of this reason as well. You are still able to browse the web using the browser, yes?

I'm happy to post it, but only some things work. Android executes some kind of connection check before letting you access most things... so, for example, over bt pan I can launch the youtube app, it will load the homepage including the thumbnails, but you can't load the actual videos. Market won't download. Google maps, however, works beautifully. I can't remember whether the browser worked or not.
EDIT: I'll have to post after I get home, it'll be a few hours. Also - I'm sure someone with come brains could make the necessary changes to make the bt connection pass the connection check. But I, sadly, have no brains. Call me the scarecrow.
Edit 2 - Ok, I must have had this going on cupcake under the old rootfs setup, because I'm having trouble with donut / noroootfs. I'll roll my test phone back tomorrow and get the pan stuff posted.
thanks for the speedy answer, i'm getting Warm Donut right now, and i'll see how it goes
I might be going out on a limb here be even asking this but is it possible to hack Zune music files or even picture files to sync with WP8 devices

I'll admit I would like this too. It is a lot better than the "WIndows Phone App" for Windows 7". Dont get me wrong, if you have Windows 8, the app looks nice but, for Windows 7, would love to get this back so I can sync like I could with my 7.5 device.

I agree with you DavidinCT. I don't think Microsoft quite go the message when we asked them that we didn't need Zune for everything. Although I like the fact that they made the store separate; they still should have left Zune as a music player or at least given us a Xbox music app.

If you plug in your WP8 device to a computer, it will show as a drive and on the drive, it has a Music folder. There must be a way for Zune to sync with it as it would be almost just like syncing with a USB drive or a flash card.
What else will zune sync with besides Zune devices and WP7 devices ? How does the WP8 app do it, maybe so converter/program can be put in there to make it see it as a Zune device ?
With it being like a USB drive, I am sure it should not be hard for someone to do...for someone who knows how Zune works and can access the API for it..
You know what, I wonder if there something in Zune's registry that can be changed?? Hum.... I'll look into it see if I can find anything.:silly:
Hum found something but not sure; under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Zune>Sync>Windows Phone>Handlers>DNS. Can someone look into it and see if anything if it is possible to write a new entry or change something? If it's a dll that needs to be changed then I'll have to leave it to a pro, I'm no good with dlls. Hopefully someone with the know how can help us.

Good luck, I'll take a look if I get a second tonight to see if I can figure out anything but, I dont understand how Zune subsystem really works but, there has to be white paper on it or something...

Cool let me know what you find because I've hit a bump.
Not to be Eeyore here, but what you are trying to do is the equivalent of making Zune sync to an iPod or other Mp3 player. It can't be done. You need drivers and numerous other resources from Microsoft, which they have developed.

he has a point here guys, and even if zune was jus copying music from one folder to another like a MP3 player it still wont work as zune has a database as well that would need amending. nope, without some kind of emulation layer, it is unlikely to ever be done
course, I should have checked the dates on this, that was some bump!
Oh yeah that darn Zune data base, I forgot about that... double bump!!
Doesn't WMP sync to usb devices?
and also does video/pictures?
I always thought zune just did what wmp does but for wp, although saying that I've never tried it with mine, just got annoyed at how pointless the windows phone 8 app is...
Yes wmp will sync to a usb device but a WP device isn't a usb device, other than the final result wmp and Zune have nothing In common, i don't have a wp8 device so haven't had the pleasure of using it but Zune is actually really good
Sent from my Lumia 900 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Zune speaks MTPZ (Media Transfer Protocol, Zune extensions). WP8 (and Windows Explorer, when showing a "media device" instead of a "removable drive") speak MTP (without the Z). They are not compatible. Your chances of getting Zune to talk to WP8 without a fair bit of reverse engineering or MitM on the connection are quite low, and I don't personally believe it's worth the effort.
With that said, I think WMP does (or perhaps did at one point) speak MTP. A number of other programs do too, including ones for OSes other than Windows. I haven't yet checked to see if there's anything special about WP8's MTP that prevents those other programs from working, though; there might be. After all, it was possible to get Zune and WP7 devices to show up (as MTP devices) in Windows Explorer after a registry tweak, but you did still need to have the Zune software installed.
Windows Media Player will sync with WP8 devices, though its pretty slow.
Attempts at hacking the MTPz protocol have been ongoing for years and it just died out and was never successful. Suffice to say, it isn't going to happen. We'll sooner get a proper syncing client from Microsoft for WP8 before someone reverse engineers the Zune software/protocol.
The only reason I would want Zune to work with WP8 is wireless sync. Wish there was a way to do that with WP8
I'm interested in some type of Music sync, I guess I would like all the zune features (podcasts, apps, etc) but, I would deal with a good music sync app.
Is anyone using anything besides the crappy "Windows Phone app" ? IS there a good 3rd party app that would sync to a removable device (like WP8 shows up as), to have a better interface for transferring music ?

Agreed. The lack of phone-to-PC cloud sync is quite frustrating. 90% of the time I discover music from my phone and want it to sync back to my PC, not the other way around. Xbox Music has its fair share of issues, both in the backend service and in the horrible Windows 8 app. If they don't fix this on the phone in WP8.1, I don't think they'll ever get it right.
It's just a shame because all they needed to do was rebrand Zune. Change the logo, color scheme, and name. I don't think we loyalists would have cared what it's called, as long as its functionality remained the same. Instead, they gutted it of all its unique and useful features, then reinvented the wheel. As a square wheel. Xbox Music is nothing more than a less-functional, slower Zune with fewer songs in its library. What a waste of time and development resources.

agree with you a 100%
if you guys didn't know this Microsoft released the windows phone app for desktop out of beta ... it is a little better then WMP but no where near Zune functionality
Bah I am working on some software to sync music like Zune does.
Music and other stuff as well.
Does everything zune does(except phone updates), plus some other things.
