for those who may be interested...it is possible to have your hero flashed to work on the Cricket network. it may not be for everyone, but i couldn't resist the lure of $40/mo unlimited everything with no contract. (saves around $1,000+ over the life of the contract)
here's what i did:
-buy cdma hero on ebay
-go to a cricket store and ask them to activate the phone
-usually the rep will "know a guy" who can work with htc (try a few stores or call around)
-they may charge you $30 or so to flash it and its working
wireless data, visual voicemail, and mms dont' work...but they expect to get them working soon (phone is only a few weeks old at this point)... and where i'm at, i almost always have wifi and don't care about vm or mms.
Might see if any of these guys know about xda...perhaps they just need to be pointed here to share the wealth of what they're doing.
HTC Hero Phone Code Numbers ##
if you do transfer to cricket (or perhaps another cdma carrier), a good thing to know is:
##000000#
this will allow you to edit or view EPST (change/view your Mobile Directory Number MDN and MSID)
The MDN is your current phone number, your local cricket store can give you your MSID (which also depends on your phone number).

I´m in Mexico, and I have a Hero woking here with data. So far it´s 1x, but I only worked on it for about 3 hours. After this long weekend (we have monday off here) I´ll get to work on it to make Ev work.
Don´t lose heart It´ll get there.

The radio is separate from the OS and the traditional CDMA tools work on the Hero like any other phone. There are plenty of other forums talking about how to port CDMA phones to other providers; especially Indian forums because there are large CDMA networks there.
Edit: when he says "flash it," he probably just means to put a new PRL (preferred roaming list) and editing the details under ##DATA to match what another provider wants.

"Broadband Workaround Trick"
Hey guys!
I'm new to the Hero (CDMA Sprint flashed to Cricket) and Android. Totally new. I'm no stranger to Windows Mobile though, I've been a pretty intense user and contributor to development on the Axim x51v. Thought it was time to update though, and here I am.
Now, I've googled my butt off (which is going to make it tough to poop later, for sure), and I just can't find much detail or step by step info on how to get internet access working on this thing other than Wifi.
I have phone/text, and I also bought a Cricket Broadband plan to go along with it.
My phone is not rooted, not unlocked, unless this was part of what they did at the Cricket store to get my Hero flashed to Cricket.
I've read some mentions in google searches about a way to use my Broadband service through my phone... but I need some step by step info on how to do this. Can anyone help? What would be handy, as a somewhat savvy noob, would be prerequisites, instructions, and info I'll need to do this.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help, and I apologize in advance if I didn't google well enough before asking... although I definitely gave it a damn good shot before asking for help!
I've never tried it, so i don't know, but i have flashed a lot of WM phones to cricket with working mms and WAP. I would think you could get the internet to work by entering first changing your msl to 000000 and then just entering in all the correct settings in your EPST like you would a windows mobile phone?
cricket wap on hero
the phone has built in proxy support so u can download anycut from the market and input "wap.mycricket.com" and "8080" in the proxy settings. however most of the internet apps dont work, but the browser does. i believe the broadband hack or possibly the html plan will help in getting the internet apps to work but havent tried yet
htc hero wap no working
.i have a sprint htc hero that had cellular south on it now its flashed to cricket.the only thing working is calling.can you walk me through getting internet.i belive my wap setting are set up,but when i try and connect to mobile network it says "standbye for connecting to mobile network then connecting and keeps repeating"i have read that iv got to root the phone.iv been trying to root with no success.and hepl please .ty
htc hero cricket
please help dont want to try anything till im shure .lol
its actually possible. my friend works for cricket and got a sprint branded touch pro working. he just has voice and mms. but its a start i guess. i needs my data lol.
so why would you want a hero that only half the features work on?
i have an htc hero...i live in laredo tx..if anyone knows how i can flash this cell phone to cricket please let me know..they have told me that they dont have the software to do so..please HELP ME!!! *TeAr* and where did u guyz flash it so i can go overthere if i cant do to here....

hey please let me know where you flashed your htc hero....i will go to whereever to do so..LoL...im in laredo i think wer r not dat advanced n all this **** of flashing cell phones...
So i currently have a G1, and want to get a hero but the sprint version. I was wondering if this phone was flashable to metro, im not sure if all cdmas are flashable. So i wanted to know from you guys, i searched but didnt find my answer...
-Best regards Ace
Edit: Also wanted to know if custom roms would work since i wouldnt be using sprint.
I was wondering this too. I'm only kind of interested though since I think MetroPCS doesn't have the data or EVDO that Sprint has. And then there's the whole deal with breaking the contract. I can see it being a good deal if you just use it for voice and text, and WiFi and mobile data isn't that important.
as long as you get a CDMA HERO ROM that is made for metro PCS
so which rom can i use for metro pcs???
i have a htc hero
Guys, at least here in Naples FL
In wirelesstoyz they will flash any CDMA phone to metropcs for aronud $60, except Palms, and Blackberries, the problem is at least with the Hero is that the phone relies a lot on the network, and right now only maps and browsing works on metropcs no 3rd party apps from the market will have connection. so it renders the phone useless at least from my point of view.

Like I replied to you on Fresh's thread....the ROM does not matter.

Well if they have the network working to that level wouldn't everything work? MetroPCS works off proxies (atleast when I've messed with their stuff ). I don't know exactly how Android works or anything, but I would assume there is a setting for proxies, and that would direct all network traffic over it.
I have no experience with a Hero on Metro, but this was just my experience with other phones on Metro that weren't supposed to be.

I tought the same thing, but I could not find a socks 5 proxy and settings rules with Iptables did not work, because theprograms always changed them back to default
Hello everyone, so I have a few questions, but let me provide some background information. I flashed my Vogue to Cricket about a month or two ago and am running one of NFSFans 6.5 roms. I was just scrolling through a few of the already preloaded applications on there and decided to try Facebook. I had previously tried it, knowing it wouldn't work since Crickets proxy doesn't allow it. So I tried it last night either way and to my surprise it worked perfectly!
I decided to try out all the other apps and was even able to install about three from the Marketplace. For some reason though even when I have a 3G signal, it connects to 1X so it's slow, but everything works. I'm also not running proxycap or anything of the sort.
My questions are, how did the apps end up working? and is there a way to get the 3G signal?
Thanks in advance!

It should switch between 1x and 3g by itself (as long as you have coverage where you are). As to why they work, it could be the provisioning cabs, but there is a big chance that Cricket unblocked the proxy considering that these apps are hugely popular nowadays... this last part is only an assumption. More than likely, there is something that changed in your connection settings that is allowing these apps to go online.
I hope this helps.
I checked my data settings and noticed everything that had cricket reverted back to Alltel but that never gave me any problems connecting to web? Was that because it was connecting to 1X and not the 3G line?
Also I loaded a different PRL and that gave me my 3G signal, and for the first few bits it'll be pretty quick, then i'll end up getting about 5 or so kb/s?

Maybe your signal dropped a bit and that's why your connection slowed down.
A month ago I bought a NIB evo shift and got it flashed on my metro with everything working. Mostly I use wifi at work n home but I also had the crappy slow metro mobile network working somehow when I needed to use chat app, newspaper or google search. Last night I saw the 2.3 update and I thought if I update I could improve the performance of my device. I wish i didnt update!
With the update my mobile network stopped working. First I thought it was metro somehow disabled it but with a little search on the net I figured out that gingerbread is not compatible with metro mobile network. So super frustrated, I went to sprint and was ready to sign up if they could flash the phone to sprint network. The rep said they dont do it and I have to find someone to do it. In the mean time he told me to flash a phone they need to root the phone temp or perm and it is not possible with 2.3 yet.
Of course I couldnt give up and start calling flashers on craiglist. Even thought I explained that I have a metro flashed 2.3 shift they said "dont worry we can fix the internet issue if you bring the phone"
Now since i know its not possible to downgrade to froyo or root the phone, does anyone think they can fix my mobile network back to normal?
I need an expert advice before I drive 1 hour and spent some money on this issue. I will check back responses in the morning before I leave. What is my options?
1) Wait till some dev figures out rooting and try to get metro net fixed?
2) Find someone to flash back to sprint or any other network?
3) Buy a new evo shift with 2.2 and get it flashed to metro and try to sell this one ?
Any suggestions and information is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance
What's up everyone. Im new to xda and was hoping someone could help me out. I have a s4 unlocked that im using on metro pcs. I seem to be having problems with the 4g. Its always coming on and off and seems like I have to place a call to get it back up and running. And could be a stupid but I cant seem to get any 3g when I lose 4g. If I dont have 4g I have no internet what so ever And also when Im on wifi and then turn off wifi 4g will not turn back on untile I place a call and hang up. And thoughts are helpful.
