Nandroid Backup Amon RA - v1.6.2G TIP - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Sorry if this is the wrong section to post this, but i just had about 3hrs of "Did i really Jack this Up"... Not sure if this will go for everybody but its what i found out, a "Tip" i would call it.
If you have used the Nandroid backup (for safety) of cuz your like me and hate redownloading everything and customizing your home screens again, and you've ran into this error when trying to "Restore" from Recovery.
"Error: run 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore' via adb"
I did this and followed some steps online to do so, and then the boot screen would just keep reloading and never get thru...
Foundout, after you save your rom, and connect via usb to pc, and go into your "nandroid" folder, then choose the HT***** folder it will have your Back up, minez started with B******, i changed that name (i.e. manup - Eclair 2.1) so that i can easily choose which rom i wanted to run. well if there is any spaces in the "Name" of your Back-Up, you will get the "Error" listed above, i renamed the folder from; manup - Eclair 2.1 to manup-Eclair2.1 and then booted into recovery via device, and the Nandroid Restore worked perfectly fine, i tested this theory with two other roms i had in my nandroid back up and my theory was correct... so all in all, if you change the folder that has your "Back'd UP" info in it, dont put spaces in the new folder name.
my bad if i confused anyone it's lat. lol

Well, I guess I'll add on to this for fun! If you have low batteries, it'll say the same thing!

good to know, more info given the better

how do you update the radio rom??

Hi Folks.
Just been issued heros at work and wish to update the radio rom...How is this accomplished??
regards
Lohtse
Firstly it needs to have a recovery image installed I recommend Amon-Ra v 1.6.2.
Secondly you need to find the radio rom you wish to flash and put it onto the root of you phones sd card.
Thirdly enter the recovery image you have installed by holding power and home button from the phone being off.
Then select the radio.zip to flash.
Everything I have said here can easily be found how to do via searching this forum or its wiki.
also www.theunlockr.com will help with installing the recovery image.

First you will need to install the custom recovery console if you haven't done so already.
Then download your updated radio, put it on your SD, load into the recovery, then apply update. DONE!
If that is too brief,... let me know,...
EDIT... Ooops,... too late.
way to complicated...
Too much to do and can screw up..... At least with winmo and symbian was a few clicks...
hmmmmm think will ditch android.....
really? its not complicated at all when you know what your doing. In fact I can say its a damn sight easier (and safer) than modifying blackberry roms and from what I hear also Windows Mobile.

I came from wimo to android, and as it is said, it's quite hard to catch the thing at the beginning, but after everything seems easier than in wimo !! and more reliable... you have almost no chance to brick your hero after you installed the recovery boot.
radio : boot in recovery then select the good option.
rom : nandroid backup / install whatever rom you want / if you don't like it go for nandroid restore ( all you need is two Sd card.. the good one and the one for the "tests" ).... etc....
But at the beginning i was totally out but with a little time.. reading some posts (here and on the web) ... one day everything was more clear !

Its not hard at all. You can have the recovery installed and the radio updated in 5 minutes.
For step by step instructions follow the "Installing a recovery image" section in BTDAG's guide linked in my signature.
Then further down the same post, in the second yellow box there are instructions on "Updating your Radio".
Guys, the OP said he was issued the Hero at work, then two hours later said he was going to ditch Android... so what then, he's quitting his job? Troll alert. Don't feed the troll.
As to troll comment(yes offence has been caused)....hmmmmm.... Am going back to the trusty Kaiser... WE DON'T HAVE TO USE THE HERO.... We live in free(ish) world.. And the Phones are issued as an update to our old duty phones... Also I'm not the only one who uses them that feels the same.
Now to updating being easy. Gulp I must be eeer dum!!! Du hu Du HU must be the TROLL in me!
I have tried to install recovery image thing and well just cant get it to work... And now I find I have to root the hero too so things will install to sd card!!!! WTF this should all be standard like winmo and symbian etc...
I have been using smart phones since the Ericsson r380 and so far Android has failed to impress to the degree I am beginning to hate it....
Am far to used to having simply andfull access to everything..
Android is a HUGE learning curve that I suspect I may not have the patience for..
regards The TROLL sorry I mean Lohtse
Now I have finally managed to get recovery image on and updated the radio...Being called a troll did it !!!!!!.....LOL
My final questions are this how do I root so I can install to sd card(just point me in the right direction) And do I have to unlock Phone to any network to have custom roms on..

Wahey!!!! Good job man.
Ok,... So now you have the recovery image all you need to do is pick a custom ROM. Personally, I highly recommend MCR3.2 (link in signature at botom). It is an Android 1.5 ROM but is stable and fast, what more could you want for a work phone. This ROM is rooted and has apps2SD enabled. Once you have installed the ROM you will need to remember to create an ext2 partition on the SD card (easily done through the recovery). Then you are set to go!!!!

You're welcome And what ddotpatel said. MCR is fast & clean. By installing a custom recovery you've already done the only tricky bit.
Yep installed 3.2 from modocca. seems nice but how do you know if the apps are installing to sdcard???? I'm not sure they are lol..

You need to create an ext2 partition on your SD card through the recovery again. I cant remember the exact wording but something like "create ext2 + fat" or something along those lines.
As far as I know, once that has been done all apps will install to SD.
Someone with more knowhow than me correct me if I am wrong?... CAULI?,... LENNY?
Can someone who knows please answer this question:
Are you 100% sure that flashing the Radio ROM does not affect the phone RF Calibration ?
Thanks!

Yup, certainly as far as MCR is concerned. On the first reboot it will move all files from /data/app to /system/sd/app (& similarly for app-private) Nb /sysytem/sd is the mount point for the ext2 partition. All it does is move the files over & then replaces the /data/app (& app-private) directory with a symlink to the new location. That way future installs, updates etc all automatically go to the new location.
You can always check yourself with a terminal emulator & the command ls -l, or using a file manager like Root Explorer, if you're curious. Some people think it's not working because they see available space in internal flash drop as apps are installed, but that's because app data & the dalvik cache remain on internal flash, principally aiui for reasons of access speed. The saving you make just from shifting the apks to sd is more than enough for most people it seems.

A set of tables usually stored in NVRAM that takes into account the slight differences in the components used to build your phone. Every single phone is calibrated during manufacturing.
If the calibration is erased, it will look like it works but you can have all sort of problems from poor battery life to random drop from the network or poor sensibility (not to mention the higher than expected radio levels you could be emitting right next to your brain )

A Tip For Nandroid Backups

Okay so this tip comes from personal experience,k before I figured out how to fic the problem that this one created for me.
So, I did a backup before I flashed a mod someone did earlier. Well, the mod did nto work, and it broke some stuff on the phone, so I wanted to do a restore. That was an absolute no-go. I got this error message:
(image link)
So, I got a little worried that I had lots bigger problems. Long story short, I was missing the md5 file that nand creates when it makes a backup.
TIP: When doing a NANDROID backup, verify it's completeness by pressing your "back" key on your phone once the backup is complete. Scroll to USB-MS and select it. This *should* make a box pop up on your computer, meaning that you have access to your SD contents now.
In the SD card, navigate to nandroid/(Hero Serial Number)/XXX-XXXXXXXX-XXXX/ and make sure there is a nandroid.md5 file in there, as well as 3 other files, boot, data, and system.
If any of these are missing, press "Back" hard key to close USB-MS, and do another backup. Delete the current one if you do not have enough room.
The xxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxx above will be a folder, mine's named: BDS-20100523-0334, which is BDS-(year)(mo)(day)-(time). year 4 digits, month 2, day 2, and time 4 digits. If you have multiple ones, choose the most recent one, which would be the nandroid you just made.
Nice tip thanks, I do have a question though.
I thought the whole point of having a recovery in the Hero was to flash roms regardless of what breaks, even nandroid? I mean if your nandroid breaks you can just go into recovery enable usb drive and copy another rom over?
Yeah you should be able to flash any Rom regardless of whether you made a backup or not. I am just saying, its a helpful top to make sure your backup completed properly in case you ever want to go back to your old Rom, in your case, or if you're flashing an update that says will work with any Rom, or your just testing the update, and that update breaks. Same goes with current Rom modifications that you may want to try out.
Long story short, if you know you night need to nandroid backup or want to restore if you're just testing something, be sure to follow the tip above. One more step to save you problems.

[Q] MIUI Music Player

As I am new to the MT4G and to android in itself I am having problems installing this app on my phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861924
If I've come to understand the term "push" correctly I am to use "Root Explorer" to copy the .apk (which I dropped into my sd card via drag and drop on my desktop) into /systems/app and then install from there.
I've done this method with r/w on and after I hit install it says "application not installed"
If I understand "flashing" correctly I've booted into recovery and then went to "install zip from sd card" and then I chose the zip which I downloaded from the original thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857095
This is ALL I did on the recovery screen.
Am I missing something in this method of flashing the zip?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
I swear all I need is to learn it once (if explained thoroughly) and I'll be able to do it myself from that point on.
Once again, thanks.
it seems a lot of people are having the same problem in that thread... your best bet is to ask one of them if they fixed it for their own phones
side note: when people say push... some times your really have to push it you cant just copy it... you would plug in your phone> adb push file... theres a huge thread if you wanna learn more about adb...
It may or may not work on "sense" roms. I'm running it on CM and I pushed it through ADB. I suppose I may go back to stock rom and try it during the weekend. I wouldn't post/linked to it if it did not work for me (like people that link to Gingerbread keyboard)

when you go into recovery, go to advanced (i think) and then click on mounts or something like that. then your going to click on mount/system. once you've done that, flask the .zip file and reboot, and you're good to go. its working perfectly on my mt4g. im going to remove it though because im not that thrilled with it, but it is an excellent player and with some future developement can become the best one out there, just not my cup of tea right now. btw, the recovery instrctions above is assuming you are using clockwork recovery, which you should be sonce its the only one available at the moment. any problems, let me know i'll walk you through it

[Q] Need HELP with CWM backup/recovery! (MD5 checksum)

There are so many TUTs out there explaining how to install a ROM with CWM, and even though this is easy and works well, the actual benefit of using CWM is backing up and restoring a ROM with all personal apps/settings/tweaks.
I had a perfectly set up m-deejay Revolution 2.3 installed with CWM. Then I wanted to try something else and said "sure, why not. I can just make a backup of this and later restore it..."
...well, I guess not.
When I boot into CWM, select the restoring option, and choose the backup file that actually is shown to be on my SD it starts the process just to tell me after a few seconds that some MD5 checksum is wrong. That's it. Nothing else happens or can be done.
It would be extremely important if someone could help me restore this rom. (In it I managed to get cisco openvpn working, which I am not able to repeat in a new and clean rom. I would love to take a look at the setup!)
Here's what I use:
- Radio 2.15.50
- 2.08 HSPL
- MAGLDR 1.12
- CWM 1.2
- a folder "clockwordmod" with the backup inside (I guess/hope)
Help me and I will still be telling my grandchildren about your heroic deed!
Thanks to everyone taking their time to think about it in advance!
-cartonneexpress
Did you re-name the folder where the update is located?
If yes, then undo the change and try again.........make an other backup to check the format.
In my case it is "year" "month" "date" "time"
for instance: 2011-04-27.11.15.........i'm not sure how accurate the time needs to be, but try as close as you can, it worked for me
EDIT
...............ups, didn't check the date before posting......but still, should worke for others......

Issues!!!! Evo Shift with CyanogenMod 7

I recently bought an Evo Shift that is running CyanogenMod 7 with gingerbread.
The guy I bought it from was using this, phone active, saw it with my own eyes....now that I have it, I can't get it activated with Sprint. They are saying that there is no option for "Update PRL".
Now, I don't know anything about rooting phones and all this jazz. So, as of right now, I have a $180 paper weight.
Can someone PLEASE help me. I've tried downloading the stock rom. But everything it gives me "Error 170: USB connection". I don't know what else to do.
Sounds like you got gypped.
Does it just give you errors all around? And for the price you paid, you should have just gotten it at a retail store (granted you would have needed a contract too). Maybe the guy locked it up or something.
I really don't know what to tell you. Sorry
Well as long as u can still get in the phone all u gotta do is download a sense rom from the development section ..I reccomend mikshift 1.1 .. then once that is downloaded put it on ur sd card ..I'm assuming u have one..okay so after the mikshift zip file is in the root of ur sd card u have to to go into recovery. U can do this by holding the power button and then tapping on reboot more options should come up and one of them should say recovery.I belive that cm7 does have that option....anyway once ur in recovery go to backup and restore and make a backup just in case.once the backup is done u should still be in recovery then wipe data and wipe cache then go into advance and wipe dalvik cache...then go back and go to install zip from sd card and choose the mikshift.zip file which should be all the way at the bottom of the list if u put it in the right place.so choose that and once its done reboot ur phone and wait awhile for it to boot up then go to settings and u should be able to update the prl

I don't think that's the case. The phone was on and working when we called Sprint. Everything was fine with it. But I guess to activate it from Sprint, it has to be the stock programming. Which I guess makes sense.
I didn't want to buy the phone with a contract. That's why I went that route. And that's by far the cheapest I found one. I'm sure it's a simple fix for someone who knows about this stuff. But I don't know anything about them.

Ok, I got most of what you're saying. The only thing you lost me on is when you said putting "the mikshift zip file is in the root of your sd card". How do I know where that is. I created a folder and added a zip file in there. But does it need to go somewhere more specific?

Ideally you want to put the .zip on the root of your sd (not inside any folders) but it will still work from inside the folder. Once your in recovery and perform a backup/wipe, choose install from zip, locate the folder you placed the file in,Then select and clockwork will do the rest. Then reboot and enjoy.
yes.. take it out of that folder and put it where all the other folders on ur sd card are ..in other words just drag it onto ur sdcard where it shows as a removable disk on windows.just straight into that

Glad you got it working.
The EXE files only work if you run it from your computer, by hooking up your phone to the PC, via the usb cable. You would need HTC Sync installed, as well. Zip files can be flashed directly from the phone, through recovery.
