Hi there,
two weeks ago I sent my magic to get it fixed, as the lcd was broken. They changed the lcd, vibrator and touch screen, and they updated the software (meaning a perfected spl and 1.6 official by vodafone).
Since then the GPS is not working. G maps, sygic, copilot, gps status, and others don't get signal. Sygic fails to autodetect it. GPS hardware is apparently working. I can activate it, and configuring manually in sygic I set android port at 9600 but to no avail. GPS status doesn't even load GPS values. I've waited longer than two hours sometimes.
I would like to know how I can access the GPS hardware setting, using better terminal emulator or linux console.
The problem is not the ROM, I rooted the phone and installed cyanogen ROB, and also flashed the radio. Is there something I can do?
Any ideas? Thanks in advance
I had the same problem, after they serviced my Magic, and today I send them the phone again, maybe they`ll fix it, or else I`ll sue them for incompetence (I live in Romania, so here things goes always wrong, I`m afraid)
it's exactely what has happened to me.
after I replaced the housing, the gps died.
no way to fix the signal: the gps is on but it dosen't find any sat.
I was wondering: where the gps antenna is located? is it the same for the gsm/umts one (i.e. the plastic part in the bottom of the back)?
please keep this up, we must find a solution

Hi
i have read in a few other posts regarding GPS issues and Sat Nav software not working
now i have seen a few programs that 'kick off' the GPS and then runs the program and i have run these to no avail,
i was wondering if anyone else has not only had this issue but struggled to get it working, google maps seems to pick me up via GPS but tomtom is saying 'no gps device' go into settings within tomtom and set to internal gps device, and check gps status and no cannot see any satellites. i have had the phone outside inthe line of sight of the sky for an hour so me being inpatient isn't the issue, any help would be greatly appreciated
ta
Try this:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/GPS/GPS-Test-34335.shtml
Update QuickGPS.
If no satellites show up after a max of 5mins of you standing outside with clear view of the sky, then you either need to flash another radio or the gps is dead.
hi
thanks
have left phone outside running that, seems to be scanning com1-9..pausing for a second on port 3 then continuing. will let you know in 10 mins, what is flashing another radio involve?

ok stupid question time, but if it google maps seems to be working ok would that not suggest that the GPS radio is ok, and secondly if i did flash which one would i go for on that link you sent
i have radio version 1.09.25.14 protocol 52.49a.25.261u
there is a link
Download 1.09.25.14 / 52.49a.25.26W Radio only Megepload
Download HD_Blackstone_Radio 1.09.25.14 (with RUU) 4shared
am i flashing this even though my protocol is different?
and there is about another 10 files below all them called
Blackstone Rilphone.dll Cabs
all confusing can you help any more please
thanks
I don't believe anything google maps says in relation to GPS after it told me one of my non GPS phones had inbuilt gps, and then calculated my position using the mobile phone network.
As for which you need, well it depends on which rom you are running, whether it's a stock rom (bog-standard rom you get on device when you buy it), or a custom cooked rom from someone on the forums. I suggest you read up on it thoroughly then post in the correct radio thread if you want to ask any more questions regarding the right radio version you need.
fair do's
thanks
Did you have google maps open when you started Tomtom? That may have caused an error
hi
thanks for reply, no i open google maps it seems to find my location. close google maps, then open tomtom and is saying no gps device. the 'onboard' gps device is set on tomtom options it's just as if the gps reciever isn't picking up, same in other sat nav progams too, garmin is the same so makes me think is phone not software issue
AFAIK, Google Maps is A-GPS software, while TomTom, iGO and others are full GPS software.
Don't know about TomTom, but iGO DOES NOT work if A-GPS is enabled...
hmmmm. i'll give it a whirl, not got the phone withme at the mo, a mate is attempting to simunock it, agps is enabled so i will disable it see if that helps. tempted to get rid and get an effing iphone at this rate
Let us know how you go....
Don't give up, it;s a great phone
had the same issue with tomtom v7.450. using tomtom v7.916 now and it's running like charm
Just had replacement Touch HD delivered from Orange this morning, flashed to my usual ROM, and get exactly the same symptoms as Pete did.....
Tried:
TomTom
Memory map
HTC GPS Tool
Updating QuickGPS
Updating Radio ROM to latest version
Reflashing different OS roms
nothing makes a difference.
Not really keen to take it apart as i'll break the VOID sticker and probably end up in an argument with Orange, but Id bet any money that the GPS cable has come loose......so frustrating as im working abroad as of next week and i'll really use the GPS a lot......
Also just found out that the replacement handset is "refurb".....I bet the muppet that refurbed it didnt reconnect the GPS cable
Hi everyone, I have a problem with the gps on my HD2 and I feel it could be a faulty device.
I haven't seen anyone else on here with the same problem but thought I might put a shout out for any suggestions.
I have had my HD2 since it first came out, and regularly use it for Sat Nav.
When I turn the Sat nav on (co-pilot 8) it is very quick to get a lock.
However I have noticed that when I drive through a certain part of town the sat nav always looses the satellite fix.
I thought it might be the software, but it happens in Google Maps as well.
Obviously this now looks like a hardware/radio problem.
As a extra test, I have recently upgraded my wife's phone to a HTC Desire, and took that out with me. I drove back to the same area and the HD2 lost the signal but the Desire had a full satellite lock.
Any suggestions, (apart from nicking the wife's phone )
I am using the official 1.66 rom and the radio version is 2.06.51.07
This problem has lasted through several hard resets and rom upgrades. So I don't think a hard reset would do much.
Many thanks,
Paul.
or more likely it is a shaded area. THe GPS signal is susceptible to exactly the same blocking effects as light. A wall is still a wall to GPS, its not like radio that penetrates.
Id have a good look around at what there is in the area, a large building, lots of trees, an underpass, an electrical sub station perhaps.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I had thought about that. However the area this blackspot covers is at least a mile square and it isn't just like one street etc. The area is uncovered and there are just normal houses etc.
Add to that the fact that the other phone pics up the signal with ease it would tend to say that it isn't a covered area.
Paul.
hmm odd one then. The only thing that i can think of is something a little further away interfering just enough to drop the signal.
(Lets not forget the leo seems to have pretty poor radios all round, , the phone signal is often reported to be lower than on other handsets in the same place, , the fm radio might as well not be there, ,)
perhaps it has a lower tolerance than your other device.
(but probably not)
Still, might be a nice chance for a spanking new one from your provider, thats always good!
I had a similar experience a few weeks ago, travelling through a town I don't usually travel through, suddenly there were no satellites. Then the same thing happened on the return journey. I was using iGo, when I lost the signal I switched to Google Maps and it had the same problem.
You will get these blank spots in various places. There is also the issue of the MOD and American DOD selectively closing down areas for security and test purposes.
I do honestly think that it is a problem with HTC Winmo phones. My wife's HTC Desire works without any problems.
I took out my old Tytn 2 yesterday to the same area and lo and behold it lost the satellites. So it seem there is some problem with the GPS on HTC devices.
I then tried my old SPV C500 (I've got a copy of google maps and TomTom Mobile on it) I paired it up with an external gps unit and it worked perfectly through the same area.
So it is definetely not a problem with satellites being turned off etc.
Not impressed, but I guess I'll have to live with it.
Other than that I could just pair the external gps unit with my HD2 and use it that way.
Same experience.
Previously I've been driving in some areas using Omnia, and earlier, Asus A696.
no black.
but, when I changed phone to HD2, I can see some black spots.
Hello,
Just an update to this issue and a workaround for any other people having similar problems with GPS Blackspots.
I do seem to have fixed the problem and the way I did it was to flash a different ROM onto the phone.
Previously I'd been using the stock WWE_1.66.405.2 ROm off of the HTC website.
Well I was having other issues with this (phone kept getting hot and rebooting itself) and so I thought I'd give another ROM a go.
The one I used was indie's Omega XT series WWE v3.0 With Co0kie's Home Tab v1.8.5 found here
Ever since, I have had no more reboots, and the GPS blackspots I used to have are no more.
Hope this helps.
Paul.

No the machine picks up a lock very quickly everywhere else except certain places.
What used to happen was that the machine would have a lock, then when you reached a certain area (it was the same place each time) the machine would lose the lock until you left the blackspot.
Anyway, as I put in my last post. The problem is now solved. It is a ROM issue.
hi guys, i just dont know why my DHD gps signal is so weak. today i've been driving for 30 km and it could not connect to the satelites, all the way down it was "searching for gps". when i stop the car sometimes it finds the gps signal, but when i starting to drive, the signal drops down again. same problem with locations and google navigation. any ideas folks ?
Could be anything really, there are a lot of factors. If you're riding a hayabusa, it might not be able to keep up......!
Try a factory reset and see if it helps. I personally haven't had any issues.

ok, i'll try this. no, i'm using this in the car lol

what where the weather conditions? do you have heating in your front window? latest updates as to the locations of satellites? A-GPS option off?
any experience with other GPS devices in the car?
Just did a factory restore. Still can't get gps signal to work.
Before the DHD I had a HTC desire and it had a perfect gps signal. Now I place my dhd in the same place and its just showing "searching for gps" all the time. Sometimes he catch up the signal, but it drops down very soon. Maybe there is any solutions how to fix it. Please help me people

Latest updates of locations of satellites? How can I do that?
I think ill try to reflash the official DHD RUU.

reflashed ruu, still no signal maybe its the hardware faulty? what do you think guys?
I'd call HTC if I were you. Might very well be a faulty GPS receiver.

yeah, that's what i'm going to do now, definetely its the gps receivers fault. ok thanks for help
Did you get any answer from HTC? I have also problems with the GPS-signals on my DHD. Have you checked your gps.conf file in the \etc\ directory?
My gps.conf file contains a NTP server line and it says North-America.pool.ntp.org. I think that this is what causes the slow GPS fix.
Your'e from Irland and I'm from Norway and be both should use the european NTP server. Anyone else may know something about this?
I have the same frustrating problem, just bought my DHD full of expectation here in Dubai. I bought it new at Dubai Airport Duty free and it came with same problem, very poor (nearly zero) GPS reception. It also comes with NTP_Server file north america.pool
But I really believe there is something wrong with the hardware because when I contacted HTC and shortly explained the problem with the GPS reception they immediately ask me to return the product to the HTC technical center here for repair/replacement if necessary (mine is still under warranty). The fact that they so quickly advised me to return the device made me think this is a known problem for them but since their office is so far from my house I am still relutant to take my phone there (this is a nightmare for a brand new phone of 700 USD) I tried everything I could, factory reset, different rom's, all possible apps in the world!, anything you imagine including laying the phone on my backyard overnight with full 360g sky view + data and Wi-Fi connected but no success at all, just 3 or 4 sats on view with poor reception. My HD2 with WM6.5 and Android can fix signal using same apps in 5 sec. inside my room!!! my DHD takes hours for a very weak signal and it drops like anything. I will take my phone to service center this week, can't wait anymore for a web solution...what a hassle...
Just finished Twitter chat with a mate of mine who could NOT pick a GPS signal on his DHD.

Strange but it worked.
Must it be rooted to edit the GPS.conf?

Download GPS Status from the Market. There's an option there to clear the A-GPS state and download new data from the mobile network!
Try that before sending it back. My DHD took ages to get a fix when I first got it, but now it fixes in seconds once the A-GPS state has been updated.
I've had this problem with different gps devices in the past and my dhd as well. You just have to leave it exposed to the sky for long enough to acquire current satelite locations. Preferably stationary otherwise it won't. Another way is to update the list over the internet with gps status or similar. No hardware problem tho.
Well.....as I said before....I tried GPS Test, GPS Status and many others. I have downloaded A-GPS quick fix info from the web, I have left the device exposed to open sky overnight and stationary, etc, etc, etc. No way to get a good signal, it always drop with any movement on the phone. I took my DHD this morning to the service center and a lady, supposedly technician tried to convince me for an hour that I have to leave 3G + Wi-Fi connected in order to use GPS. How comes the technical representative of HTC here in Dubai can be so stupid in telling me such rubbish.... anyways I was so pissed to see that she knew nothing about the phone neither GPS.... ok...story short.. I finally talked to her boss who very luckly had a DHD too. I took this guy outside the shop and showed him my DHD was searching for GPS signal forever and I did the same procedure in his phone in front of both of them. His DHD fixed signal in 5 sec. using Navi Premium, mine was still searching, ing, ing... The same guy called some other " HTC regional office" and someone told him that the version 1.32.405.6 (which is the one on my DHD) needs a ROM update because of language problems and very known problem with poor GPS reception however this ROM will be available only btw Feb/Mar. I was happy on one side to know that they acknowledged the problem, on the other hand we all have to wait 2 month for using the GPS. Whether this ROM in fact will solve the problem or not, this even they don't know, for now, useless GPS on my DHD and let's keep waiting. I am a bit skeptical about this ROM update since I have tried many different ROMs Stock and Custom even some of them with gps.conf europe.pool but no success, off course I didn't tell this to them otherwise I would void my warranty. My last chance is these new ROM release otherwise they will replace my GPS antenna or main board as far as they told me.
I'd regard it as hardware problem.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I am 99% convinced it's hardware problem too but before they mess up with my device trying to replace GPS antenna I will give it a last try with this new ROM release. I know very well how these people work here in Dubai and the last thing I want is people oppening my DHD and soldering components etc. I d rather accept one factory refurbished than fixing mine with those unskilled people. I hope they at least change the whole thing inside instead of replacing micro components.
I found this?
It´s actually for the nexus one with the CyanogenMod 6 (http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/09/09/gps-fix-for-cyanogenmod-6-on-the-nexus-one/)...
Can someone try it and tell me if it work? I have the same problem but as I´am a new user of android , I´m a little bit affraid to do this...
* Take your SIM out of the Nexus One
* Power on the device
* Turn WiFi on
* Turn GPS on
* Open application: GPS Status
* Go into its Settings menu
* Click on GPS and Sensors
* Click Manage A-GPS state
* Click Reset
* Click Manage A-GPS state again
* Click Download
* Now put your phone on a stable, straight surface in order to enable the phone to get a lock. This time, you’ll see your phone get the lock back way faster than before.
With that done, now it’s time to put your SIM back in and use the network to secure a quick GPS fix as well.
Rooted my G1 yesterday for the first time and installed
GreenRomProject-Presents-CyanogenMod-7.1-D/S-08/06/2011
H-BOOT 1.33.013d
Radio 2.22.27.08
Everything seems to be fine EXCEPT my GPS isn't working - When I hit my location in maps it says to enable a My Location source in system settings - I have use GPS satellites checked and use wireless networks unchecked - if i check use wireless networks it will get me my location but doesnt solve the problem why GPS isn't working. Also when I use facebook and try to check-in with places, facebook crashes (I'm assuming its trying to use GPS and for some reason it can't).
I was having the facebook crashing problem prior to this and didnt notice if GPS was working or not prior to this so I'm wondering if something got messed up during the rooting of the phone or is my GPS somehow not enabled? I don't even get a satellite icon in maps or facebook. Any help ?
anyone ?????
try reflashing
Same problem here with Laszlo's Froyo, seems that switching on/off GPS in settings doesn't do anything. Normally I got a blue color on the LED, nothing happens there either.
Very fast MOD, but I definately want to get GPS working!
Rich
Try different ROM. See if you get the same problem.
Right, got it working. Don't know what did the trick, changed radio to v2.22.28.25 (from 2.22.27.08) and installed "GPS-test-plus" (gps-test-plus-version-1-1-3 from androidxmarket) after I started the gps-test program my location changed to the right one in my case from Holland to Sudan (!)
Maybe this could be helpful to anyone.
Glad everything works out.
Update: sorry, I will read this thread first, seems to be relevant to my problem. As I'm not able to delete my own post, any moderator can delete this as they please...
Hope anyone can help me out...
My nearly 1 year old Desire Z, bought here in Norway, started acting strangely 2-3 months ago when I suddenly realized that none of the navigation software* I sometimes use were able to detect a GPS signal.
At first I thought it was the navi software that was buggy, but after a while I learned that by turning the GPS completely off then on fixed the problem for that "session" (next time I want to use Waze I need to do this over again).
At that time I was using CM7. I thought maybe the problem was within the radio (I assume that "radio" covers both the phone (gsm) radio, the wifi and the gps (plus the fm radio), that they are all part of the same "chip", but I might be wrong).
So what I did was both to move over to Miui, and to upgrade the radio.
So now my Desire Z runs
Miui 1.9.16 and
12.57.60.25U_26.10.04.12_M radio
Unfortunately the problem is still there.
So I have to 1) start Waze, then 2) go to phone settings, personal, my location and turn off "use gps satellites", wait 10 seconds, turn back on, then go back to waze. Using the gps quick setting from the pull down status bar doesn't seem to have the same effect.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?
Can it be a hardware error?
Also, Miui for some reason has some added GPS settings;
NTP server address (europe.pool.ntp.org)
SUPL server address (supl.google.com)
do these settings have anything to do with my problem (my guess is no)
Thanks,
Christopher
