Does anyone have an unbranded HTC Touch Pro working on AT&T's US 3G network? I've tried three different ROMs (2 of which were AT&T branded, complete with 3G bootup screen) and the latest radio stack I could find and it continually connects with EDGE only.
Voice works fine, but data is obviously slow (40kbit a sec or so) rather than the faster 3G speeds I've been used to on previous phones. This same SIM plugged into a Fuze or a Tilt will work fine on 3G in the same locations, so it's definitely something specific to this HTC Touch Pro.
Is the European-spec GSM freqs different from the AT&T US ones? Both list 850 and 1900mhz.
Any suggestions? Sorry if this is a noob question, but I'm at my wits end and am getting frustrated with what seems like a great phone with SLOW connectivity.
IIRC the standard / unbranded GSM HTC Touch Pro is HSDPA 900 / 2100:
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_touch_pro-2413.php
I don't think you'll be able to get 3G.

I was wondering if something like that might be the problem, and had checked HTC's own website for the Touch Pro @ http://www.htc.com/us/product/touchpro/specification.html
I saw :
HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency and data speed are operator dependent
...I'd initially only noticed the GSM frequencies, but now that you point it out, it's obvious that the DATA part runs on 900/2100 -- appears I'm screwed. :-(
Thanks for clearing this up for me!
I have a tmobile vibrant phone (hardware only). According to the phone specs i SHOULD be able to get 3g signal with my fido sim card since the phone seems to support all the same frequencies as the Canadian i9000.... but i only get edge.
If you guys are getting 3G with fido or rogers sim cards, did you have to set anything special in the phone settings?
Thanks!
Vibrant T-mobile 3G runs on 1700
that is why you only get EDGE (2G)
Fido, Rogers & Bell runs on 850 & 1900 for 3G
On my way to work today this is what i saw in the network box.
inside my house - EDGE
Outside my house - 3G
back country roads to work - i saw just G or no signal (normal i loose signal with my iphone and blackberry on there)
at work - back on edge
So i DO get 3g somehow! or is it just teasing me by showing 3G?
i read somewhere that the t-mo vibrant does have 1900 as one of its 3g bands, so this is why your phone has been able to pick up 3g at times. the problem for you is that rogers/fido mainly use the 850 band. i had the nokia n97 mini that had the 1900 but no 850 and while driving around most of the gta i would get 3g, but when i went into buildings, houses, etc, it would drop to edge.
Maybe your phone supports 1900 and not 850 MHz? Or the oposite? That would explain why you would get bad UMTS coverage.
@hondaguy you were faster than me

To my knowledge the T-Mobile Vibrant does not support the major Canadian 3g bands. It is quad band 2g, which is why you are able to get edge but it is only 2 band 3g, at least according to this spec sheet:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2439&c=samsung_sgh-t959_galaxy_s_vibrant
T-mobile uses the 1700 and 2100 UMTS bands for 3g, Bell/Rogers/Telus/Virgin/Fido use 850/1900 UMTS bands for 3g. Therefore the 3g radio on the Vibrant is not compatible with these networks.
However, WIND mobile uses the 1700/2100 UMTS bands for 3g and you can use unlocked T-Mobile phones to their full ability on Wind's network. Wind is only in major urban centres though so this may not help you if you're not in the city. Hopefully you are as Wind has a pretty sweet unlimited data plan!
http://shop.windmobile.ca/
On the other hand according this this article from Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/22/confirmed-galaxy-s-unlock-codes-are-stored-in-your-phone-vibra/
If they're right that the Vibrant is somehow capable of AT&T 3g, it would mean the phone has to be tri-band UMTS: 850, 1700, 2100 (or 1700,1900,2100) as AT&T uses the 850/1900 bands like Rogers/Bell/Telus.
This doesn't make sense to me why T-Mobile would do this. The 850/1900 bands are really only used in North America on competing carriers, so it doesn't give the phone "world" capabilities, the 2100 band does that. Why they would add a feature who's only purpose is to make the phone work on competitors' networks is a mystery to me but Engadget seems to have a picture that confirms it. If this is true than an unlocked Vibrant should technically be able to work on Rogers/Bell/Telus/Fido/Virgin 3g, but only if it is unlocked. I'm pretty sure that T-Mobile sells their phones SIM locked to their network, have you unlocked yours?
~Edit if it does have 1900 as the third band the above posters are correct in that you will get minimal 3g coverage as 850 is the primary in Canada.
yeah i wanted to switch to Wind Mobile for the $35 true unlimited data plan, until i found out they don't work with normal 850/1900/2100 phones
only 1700 / 2100
I bought this HTC Aria from USA and use it at my country (Indonesia) But unfortunately the signal is capped to search only gprs or edge, cannot hooked to 3G or hsdpa network..
I also have the asian market Aria, that works perfect in "wcdma only" netwotk. It don't have at&t logo on the upper right screen.
Question is how to make this at&t Aria working on my country wcdma network, bcoz I think that hardware already supported.. I just don't know how to hack it
I believe that its all about software or radio file or something like that , so I put my question here in this sub thread.. So sorry if I do a wrong post.

I think it is more a frequency issue than a lock issue. This is a world phone and no frequencies are locked. But if your carrier doesn't use the same 3G frequencies, it will not work on 3G. The 3G frequencies for the Aria are 850mhz and 1900mhz. Your carrier is probably using 900mhz and 2100mhz for 3G. Your only fix (if this is your issue) is to either buy another phone or change carriers.
Not to threadjack, but do any US carriers use the [apparenlty] more common 900/2100mhz for 3G?

Nope. Neither AT&T or T-Mobile use 900/2100 for their 3G frequencies. AT&T uses 850/1900 and T-Mobile uses 1700(AWS).
The Aria should work
HSPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS/GSM; Dual Mode UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (1900/850MHZ) & GSM/GPRS/EDGE (Quad band 850/900/1800/1900MHZ); HSDPA/UMTS (3GPP Release 5 Compliant; 7.2 Mbps Enabled) EGPRS Functionality

It's supposed to be a quad band.
No the HTC aria is not quadband for 3g or hsdpa. Basically there is a US versiont the 850/1900 . In Taiwan they released another version with the 900/2100. So if where you live doesn't have a place that uses the 850/1900 your basically stuck w/ 2g speeds.
Hi,
I bought MyTouch 4g from US and unlock it. Now, I am using the same in India. The problem is that I cannot connect to 3g network in india.
I googled and found that MyTouch 4g recognize 1900 MHz frequency as 2g and in India, 3g works on that frequency.
Is it possible to make MyTouch 4g listen for 3g on 1900 MHz? Is it possible thru Radio rewrite or something?

My friend has the same phone. Got it from US and 3g is working with Airtel. Make sure that your sim is 3G ready. If it is old then it wont even search any network when in 3G mode. MyTouch 4g supports 2100 MHz. Airtel and every other 3g operator also uses the same Bandwidth in India. You don't need any radio flashing.

Hi Sagar! Thanks for the reply, I took my friend's sim (which is almost a year old), and tried but no luck , I checked the airtel site and they claim that to use 3g, you do not required new sim, the old one works.
I am really confused!

The myTouch 4G is designed to use on the T-Mobile network with HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
The 3G network in some countries will be different. You should have this frequency to enjoy 3G service.
This is preset in the hardware itself, so can't change by flashing Radio. Try using some other carrier sim cards.
Always remember to ensure the compatibility of the carrier before purchasing the phone.
ummm , probably i got the same problem
im in china and when i connect to 3g network the phone displays 4g icon on the top ....

That's not a problem. myTouch 4G is designed for T-Mobile HSPA+ Network.
If your phone displays 4G icon, it means that you are having an HSPA+ network (speed > 14.2 Mbps)
I think you are on China Unicom network, if yes you can enjoy high speed network same as T-Mobile.

Technically i think it holds good....may be some other compatibility aspect.
I suggest to use the carrier TATA DOCOMO, since they use the advanced technology of NTT DOCOMO, JAPAN
Go through this Wikipedia link. Try changing the carrier sim until you reach the compatibile one.

Technically you should but may be you are in an area where there is no 3g coverage? Just guessing.

Yeah, manish might be right. Check whether 3g network is there and make sure that in settings->wireless n networks->use only 2g network is unchecked.
it should work. I don't see a prob with the phone as it worls here in Karnataka. Try using vodafone 3g too.

Hey Felix,
Just now I asked my friend (who owns MT4G) about airtel 3G in Ahmedabad. Airtel 3g is not yet deployed there it seems. That's what he told. He is getting 3G here in Bangalore but when he visited he dint get 3g. Vodafone has 3G there I guess.
No issues with phone I guess.
BTW, I am Diana's classmate.
you can find my email address in some of her forwards

See, world is too small!
Back to the point! My wife has HTC G2 (HTC GSM Hero) bought from India only, she is getting Airtel 3g, and I am not! ,
In any case, I am going to get a new sim card tomorrow, and also, I am going to check 3g service with TATA DOCOMO, as I checked with them and they are providing 3g services on HSDPA 2100 Mhz.
So, let me do these test cases and will let update you!
Thanks,

Read somewhere that Airtel has 900 Mhz band in some circle. It might deploy 3g in that band in some circle where it dint win 2100 Mhz band e.g. Gujarat. Tata Vodafone Idea won 2100 band for Gujarat.
It seems Airtel deployed 3G on 900 MHz band in Gujarat. your wife is getting 3G with the phone which has WCDMA 900/2100 Freq band support. MT4G has WCDMA 1700/2100 but you are not getting 3G. so logical conclusion is Airtel has deployed 3G on 900 Mhz. Try switching to Vodafone/Idea. You will get 3G if this is the case.

The T-Mobile myTouch 4G is designed for band frequency HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
It uses HSPA+ (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access) network of T-Mobile.
Even if it's build with HSDPA technique & a maximum download speed of 14.4 Mbps,
It is termed as 4G not 3.5G because it uses the T-Mobile HSPA+ network (speed upto 42Mbps) all over the U.S.

@above, FYI, WCDMA is the Physical layer technique for HSPA or HSPA+. So when u say it is HSPA/HSPA+ network your phone is using WCDMA for phy layer.

I had already checked on their site. It supports 1700/2100 for HSPA(+) network and doesn't support 900 MHz

Wrong. MT4G doesn't support 900MHz band, only 1700(AWS)/2100. Refer to official HTC or T-Mo specs on their respective sites.
Additional possible reason for not having 3G is - you need the correct APNs entered to get the cellular data working.
Hi Friends,
Finally, getting 3g network (sometimes 3g and sometimes 'H') with Airtel only, I did these things
1) Change the sim card, as my sim card was around 6 years old!
2) On my carrier's site, it is not written that I need to request them to start 3g, but actually, we need to send sms '3G' to them, and then they will enable 3g network
3) I did my network mode to WCDMA only,
Some facts
- Airtel Gujarat 3G runs on 2100 Mhz
So, in nutshell
MyTouch 4g works in India with Airtel 3g network !
Thank you all!
Cheers,
Felix

Haha. I told you to change the SIM at first..
Yeah, even i thought 2100 MHz should be freq as it is the same everywhere else. Plus, I was just thinkinig about 900 because airtel dint get 2100 band for Gujarat. But also read somewhere that it tied up with idea for that frequency. So all in all, all is well.
I know it's an old thread. But incase if someone still looking for clean answer on which handset to buy for indian 2G and 3G neworks.
1. Technically AT&T US should do.
2. It should be having 2100 MHz (MegaHertz) 3G HSDPA (Indian carrier use this band to DOWNSTREAM data on 3G band) + 1900 Mhz (Indian carrier use this band to UPSTREAM data for 3G)
If any one of these (HSDPA 1900 / 2100 MHz) is missing from your mobile handset, Then your 3G will not work in India.
3. 900 and 1800 and 1900 MHz for 2G / EDGE / GSM / GPRS
So in all it should be like this to cover all indian operators
General 2G Network : GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network : HSDPA 1900 / 2100
I have been looking everywhere and cannot find how to enable HSUPA on my LG Quantum. I know that the phone is capable according to the specifications, but it is clearly not enabled when I can get 4Mbps down stream, but only 110Kbps up stream.
Also I have a Vodafone 3g USB and using the same sim card I can get equal up and down stream. So this verifies that it is a phone issue.
Does anybody have any suggestions, or somewhere they can direct me.
Btw, My fone is flashed with Telstra rom and fully updated with WiFi-Tethering , so it would help a lot to have HSUPA enabled.
I have tested my phone with Bell ROM and Telstra ROM on the Bell network and I can get 2+Mbps upload speeds on the device with either ROM.
When tethered via wifi, it can get 3+Mbps. Haven't tried USB tethering.
You are using an ATT Quantum ? perhaps it does not have all the frequencies your vodaphone USB stick has?
Yes, Att Quantum
Yeah my phone was originally AT&T. But it should still have the frequencies I would think. I'll do a little research and find out what frequencies the USB stick has, and what frequencies Vodafone India uses.
booo.
I found that Vodafone India 3g uses the UMTS 1900MHz / 2100MHz band just as all other carriers in India.
In my research for the Lg Quantum C900 I found that the frequency specs are:
GSM:
850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
UMTS:
850, 1900, 2100 MHz
Data:
HSDPA 7.2 Mbit/s, UMTS, EDGE
But as you can see it actually doesn't seem to explicitly state a capability for HSUPA, as I had thought it did.
But you just told me you are able to get HSUPA Uplink speed. What carrier model are you using?
I am using c900b from Bell.
