quick rosie quesion. (rosie utility) - Hero CDMA General

Okay, I'm modifiying damagedcake for a personal-use rom, and one thing I'm doing is removing rosie and instead using the launcher.apk from the legend leak. However, now on boot up I've got a force close from Rosie Utility. I don't really know what Rosie Utility is, or where to find it, or what it even does. Yes, I've searched the forums about removing rosie, but nothing mentions rosie utility.
Is this something I can remove? Where is it? Or am I up a creek without a paddle?
Thanks!

EDIT2: Nevermind, I'm not having the problem anymore, must have been a fluke!

Live wallpapers.apk installed on G1 from NeXus dump

Ok guys i've managed to successfully install the LiveWallpapers.apk from the NeXus dump and also the MagicSmokeWallpaper.apk on the G1 on android 2.1. problem is that I can't get the LiveWallpaperPicker.apk to install in order to use live wallpapers. reason being is because it isn't being deodexed properly.. I used the deo-all tool and it de-dexes the .apk but i see that it throws an error during the process and i can't find out what it is since the terminal quits to quickly for me to do so. i sign the .apk and install, but throws the error "dexopt". so my theory is its not properly being de-dexed.. once I get this solved i'll also have the new launcher2.apk, gallery3d.apk, and visualization wallpapers.apk able to be installed.
any help??
bump this get this poppin
I liked to see those apps working as well...
Major progress, so thanks to a cpl devs who helped out (miketaylor, djengizz) i've been able to install the livepaperpicker.apk and the prompt to use live wallpaper shows up now.
but it fc's. reason being is because for some odd reason when it gets deodexed the mainclass in the classes.dex gets deleted and so the activity can't be read and it isn't initialized by dalvik. all we would need is to be re-compile the classes.dex back with the mainclass and in theory it should work.. but that's where the problem lays. smali isn't being so nice and throws bunch of errors.
ive heard talk about these wallpapers. what exactly is so special about them?

From what i've seen they allow the wallpapers to be animated, so for example, you can have a wallpaper that has different weather effects, or a pic of the ocean moving etc.
I cant wait until this is working on the Manup 1.0.1 rom.
good luck guys, this would be amazing.
update: there's just 1 issue holding this back from happenning afaik, once we get this worked out it should be a go.

Thanks for your feedback
Hope you can tune the app soon!
Maybe something is wrong with the app that you been trying to deodex. Have you tryed downloading another nexus dump from a different source and deodexing those apps? Just a suggestion in case you didnt think about it just trying to help!
i am trying to install this on my droid with 2.1.
You need to move over some of the libraries from 2.1 or else it will not work.

ok like what libs??.. my main issue right now is when de-odexing the apk, it leaves out the mainclass activity, so it cannot be initialized by dalvik and throws a fc. I've got it installed however and attempts to intialize when prompted

Any Progress on this...ill be a beta tester if you need any
this is one of the coolest features of 2.1 to be honest...the eye candy factor is amazing. Seems like progress is being made though...you think it will be done soon? want it on my mt3g soon =D
guys, I have everything I need to get this working, it's just I still have the 1 problem that is totally hindering this. i'ved asked for help to somebody but they haven't responded back, although it's not something that me and djengizz haven't tried already. at this point, only hope we have is getting an un-odexed dump, OR jf updating the smali tools that are throwing the errors that we get. believe me, if u guys can't cait to have this, imagine how i feel having everything set and ready to go with only 1 thing holding it back, especially since I was basically the first 1 to start up on this mod before anyone else.
Sucks I cant do anything to help...im just sitting down while you do all the work so I can watch my wallpaper move
sounds like your really trying hope you get this out soon...you'll be my hero for sure.
basically, the main problem is in smali... I have all the smali files and try re-assembling but smali just throws loads of erros and doesn't make the classes.dex we need to get this up and running.

Replacement Friendstream from Froyo

Im running Modaco 3.1 and im very happy with it. i do however have one small issue
Im running danish version and i cannot for the life of me get the line that says when it's last updated to show 24h format
I have tested Jons Foryo 2.2 rom and the friendstream widget in that is so much better, but how do i remove the old one from modaco rom and install the new one ?
Preferably without having to recook the entire rom
an adb shell and use the command rm *FriendStream* gives the error 'Directory not empty' and then fails the removal
Any bright ideas ?
/Smirge
p.s. i do not know how to cook and resign a rom - yet, but i suppose it can be learned if i have to.
Well - past hour or 2 i have learned how to sign the zip file - easy piece of cake
But if i take the friendstram widgets from the froyo rom i had and replace those in the 2.1 Modaco rom, i don't get a widget, and if i run the FriendStream app i get a force close....so i guess it's not compatible
dang - really had hopes for this....
But on the positive side - i learned stuff from this

...caused me to lose mobile data
Man this is super nice I'm trying this tonight I'll post results lol 4g ha ha nice
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
I should have waited before posting this...hours later I lost mobile data...probably has to do with editing the framework-res.apk so I had to redownload cm6 and flash it to get mobile data working
If anyone has a solution I could send them the zip I was flashing....

Awww man this would have been cool but a good work still man hope u get it working
Root-Hack-Mod-Always%
If the only thing you did was change the Icons then its not what caused you to lose data..
Changing .png files within apks is probably the most simple mod you can do and I would give it another try. Cause unless you messed with some xml file i doubt its what caused your issues. You can actually edit apks pngs without unzipping or apktooling.
I wish I could explain it -
all I did was take 4g icons from the Epic - rename them to their 3g icon counterparts in CM6 - I opened the apk with 7zip and dragged them from my desktop to the folder
the only snag I hit when doing that was renaming them again inside the apk - because they were being named: random4gimage.png.png because I didnt have windows set to show known extensions - perhaps if I didn't do this it would have worked better? I honestly think that cant be it - but you never know - considering I have never edited an apk before that -
I didn't edit any other files - I didnt 'sign' anything before flashing it considering I dont even know how to sign files -
but I def would love to know what caused me to lose mobile data so I could try it again without thinking I may have to RUU again
This is all probably over my head but, would Metamorph provide some sort of work around for this.
Guys, a .png has no control whatsoever over 3G data you get... it's just like a paranoia effect that's spreading that you lose 3G from this. You won't lol.
If anyone is brave enough to try this. If not I will flash it tomorrow when I get to my Hero.
I accept no responsibility for what happens to your phone.
I have not tested this out as I do not have my Hero with me at this time. Also, this is the first update.zip I have made. I'm not 100% on what I'm doing, I used these instructions here to create the folder structure, and this application here to sign it.
If it works, awesome. If not, I apologize in advance.
Instructions:
- Copy 4g-icons-heroc_signed.zip to your sdcard
- Reboot into recovery
- Make a nandroid backup (or two if you don't trust me - I wouldn't either)
- Flash 4g-icons-heroc_signed.zip
- Reboot
It is my sincere hope that this is exactly what the OP was trying to accomplish.

No, I know it is paranoia...lol...I just began to lose interest in it...but I tried flashing the 4g update using the nov2 blackmod rom and it sent me into a boot loop
Sent with the xda app using CM6
The bootloop could've been caused by a difference in the framework-res.apk files. When you flashed it, the whole framework-res.apk was replaced, and was likely incompatible with the ROM version you were using.

I just flashed this to my own Hero and ran into a slight problem. My Hero doesn't have service. However, I did pull the framework-res.apk and upon looking at the files I changed they did stick. No bootloops or force closes at all. I'm happy to say that I believe this to work and I hope that someone else will try it and post whether or not it works for them as verification!

[Q] New member/ Droid Owner - I can has help!?

Ok so I picked up my Droid X about a month ago and haven't been able to put this thing down, I never thought about rooting it because it did everything I needed/wanted it to do, then one day I log into my car forum and all the OT guys are posting cool print screen's of their phones. I was intrigued, so I rooted my phone and have been trying to figure out a few things but I'm not really up on the terminology and/or logic behind doing certain things. I would greatly appreciate any help in regards to explaining the following:
1) Rooting - Takes off restrictions on the phone so that developer apps can be installed... Is there more to this or is that pretty much it?
2) Flashing - I see this term often but I'm not sure what it is exactly, I tried installing a theme once and the directions said to flash something somewhere and looked at it the same way my dog looks at me while I'm working out at home.. lol
3) ROM - !?
4) apk's - What are they, what do they do, and how do you install them!?
5) Installing themes - I'm thinking has to do with all of the above...
6) Locating and moving downloaded content...
7) How do all of these things tie together? I'm completely clueless as to what does what on the phone and would like to become as knowledgeable as I was when the iPhone first came out and I figured out how to jailbreak/unlock it...
As a reward for your time and effort I leave you Final Fantasy VII fan's with a cool wallpaper I found at work today.. Thanks for any/all input and again, your time is most appreciated!!

First off- that is a lot to bite off as an opener. lol. I have to get in a minute- plus I am a newb as well but here a couple of things...
1) You sound pretty on track. Root gives you access to more options with your phone. It also voids your warranty.
2) Flashing. A term used loosely. Normally it is used in conjunction with "flashing a rom". It simply means to install something (basically).
3) Rom. It is the image (not in the photo-graphical sense) that is embedded/burned on your phones hard drive with all the information of your operating system. For instance: you are on the stock 2.2 ota "rom". But you could "flash" the new "AOSP rom" that was just released. That means you would be removing the factory image that came on your phone and replacing it with a modified image. Theme's and .apk's -those are not "burned" into the phone. If you do a factory reset- those will be wiped. The rom image stays put. If you flash from 2.2 ota to AOSP and then did a factory reset- you would not return to the original state your phone came from Motorola bc that image is completely removed and replaced by the new image you flash. Instead you would return to a clean AOSP.
4) .apk's - .apk is simply the name of the file extension used for android applications. I came from Windows Mobile and they were called .cabs. So any app can be referred to as an .apk. You can download an apk from XDA, place it on your sdcard, tap the file, and i think you will be prompted with "do you want to install" (some where along those lines). There is a setting in the "Settings" that allows you to install 3rd party (non-market) .apk's.
5)Installing themes. This refers to modifying the images (and this time I do mean in the graphic sense) of certain .apk's and other whatchamajiggies. You can install a simple theme that just changes your lockscreen, or you can install a huge theme that changes almost every part of every image so the entire phone looks similar. Here is the tricky part about using themes- your phone has to be deodexed.
deodexed. When you get your phone all of the system files come with a few different parts to them. One of those parts is an odexed file. Apparently the theme building types do not like working with these files so they run this process called de-odexing in which all of the system files are somehow manipulated in a way where they no longer need their odex file. So you end up "de-odexed". There is a program called "xultimate 2.2" that enables regular folk like you and me to deodex our phones. I tried running it yesterday and it errored out on me. So I used another method that worked fine. There are some threads on here about deodexing- if you want themes you will have to do it.
6) locating and moving downloaded content. When you have root you can get Root Explorer from the market. I am sure there are other good file exploreres- but I can't speak to them- I use Root Explorer. As far as locating downloaded content- whenever I download something from my phone, it always (normally) goes to /sdcard/downloads. If it is not there, I guess you just do a search for it. If you want to move it- long press the item, copy, move.
And you will need to google "ADB" (android device bridge). Many of these activities will require the use of ADB. You plug in your phone through USB (make sure phone settings are set to "USB debugging") and... well there is just way to much on this one. Google this one and you will find a lot of stuff- or search it here on XDA
have a great weekend. got to go.

[Q]Custom Sense 3.0 Lockrings?

First post.
Okay, so I've already searched the Desire forum for any sign of custom rings for the Sense 3.0 lockscreen ports, and I haven't found any. I can only see them in the other forums, such as this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137442 in the Desire HD Forum. I really wanted the standard one, so I downloaded it, and tried to flash (thinking that maybe it'll work because my Desire has the Sense 3.0 lockscreen port).
However, the installation fails when I try to flash it in recovery. Never giving up hope, I opened the zip in ES File Explorer, tried to manually install the apk's (fusion.apk and idlescreen_base.apk). Only the idlescreen apk manages to get to the "warning" that you'l replace a system app, while the fusion apk gets a "Parse error". I didn't attempt to install the idlescreen apk alone because it'll probably need the fusion.apk to work (And I might probably mess up something if I did).
So my question is, can it be ported? (Or at least find a way to manually create them for the Desire) Or is there really no other way for it to work? (I'm running AcesMod007 v34 btw.)
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Okay.. I just saw this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078621 and I think this is solved. (Silly me. )
